Falling for Matt: A Second Chance at Love

Rate this book
After finding his partner in bed with another man, Robert sees his relationship of fifteen years come to a painful end. A distinguished college professor, his whole life had been dedicated to his career and partner, but after his betrayal, Robert spends one year trying to mend his broken heart, too deep in his sadness to even continue his work in the field of nanorobotics.
Everything starts to change when he meets Matt, a twenty-six year old gardener, who at first sight has nothing in common with him. He’s the poster-boy for the masculine: tall, rugged and handsome, mixed with something else, a dash of sweetness and unpretentiousness that leaves Robert intrigued and wanting to know more. At the same time, Robert fears the stigma of their age difference and what people will say about him dating someone younger.
Nevertheless, they find themselves gravitating towards each other, navigating the entangled mess of each other’s lives. Robert’s fear is still alive, though: will he be able to mend his heart, let himself be happy again and trust another man?

WARNING: This book contains explicit scenes of consensual sex between men as well as some graphic language. It is intended for a mature, adult audience.

No. NO. No.

Just....No. This book sucked so hard that I could not take it seriously. The grammatical errors alone could have warranted the one star, much less the awful dialogue, the confusing adjectives (square eyes anyone?) and most boring story line ever .

This had potential to be great. I loved the idea of the young gardener coming to work for the newly single silver fox - I mean...hello fantasies? Well this fell short in so many ways that I can't even begin to describe. Falling for Matt just did not work for me.

On to the next!

One star, two stars? One star? Two?

I guess I'll give it two because, while I didn't really like this book, I suppose it is "okay". Hard might have some potential, but his writing ignorance grated on my nerves.

"...square, blue eyes..."

How does someone have square eyes? And that comma shouldn't be there.

"How dared he insinuate Robert taught because it gave him more victims to choose from?"

Shouldn't that be victims period?! Saying "more" insinuates Robert was partly scouring for victims...

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

"After a moment of silence, though, he added, "Well, I think I'll let you two talk about Harry's big mouth," Christopher said as he hugged Robert."

"His reputation hanged in the balance..."

"Harry demanded Robert retracted himself by telling him every detail about the previous night..."

"Robert really was someone he could see himself building a future with, and if that meant doing crazy stuff like taking a cab to bring him hot soup, so be it."

That is, without doubt, the craziest fucking shit I've ever heard of. No one has ever done anything crazier. Hot soup and a cab? It's like Matt has a death wish.

"Only a couple of months before he would have been a mess had Ted broken into his house back then."

"'I managed to trace it back to the IP address,' Kevin said, handling Robert a sheet of paper. 'It's Joseph's home address.'"

No. This is not how IP addresses work.

"He did not take amiss his parents for acting the way they did."

"...the fur ball of stress inside his throat..."

I lost track of how many "discharges of adrenaline" Robert and Matt experienced, the word "scrumptious" is used in a serious way, and just because you're better at a certain skill than someone else, that does not make you smarter.

Oh, and by all means, let's not report someone who would gleefully destroy an innocent person's reputation and career.

"Life couldn't be better. He just had to learn how to unwind and enjoy it."

Those are the last two sentences in the book. Robert spends the entire missive uptight and worrying about one thing or another, and after finally wrapping everything up and getting his man, his Happily Ever After epiphany is that he needs to learn to relax and enjoy life?

This one missed the mark for me. First off the concept is one that has been done multiple times but that's not the problem here. The problem for me was that the mc's are supposed to be crazy about each other but I felt absolutely no chemistry/heat between the two of them at all. The great misunderstanding that usually comes at about the 70% mark was totally lame and the big I'm to old he's too young argument became redundant. There were cute parts but even the sex scenes were lacking for me. I've been known to give a higher rating for a book based on sex scenes alone but I couldn't even do that here. Lol, it was just ok for me.

I've been a fan of James since "Stripped Expectations" and I continue to be delighted at the stories that flow from his mind; I wish I had his talent. Eh, at least I can read. Anyways, back to the review.

In this book we follow Robert who is trying to pick up the pieces after his partner's devastating betrayal and it's definitely no easy feat for him. Fortunately, he has great people surrounding him who never let him give up. Once he was able to get himself back up, you could see that he was a funny, determined, clueless, and awkward man; he didn't always say the right things, but you could see that his heart was good and his actions revealed that. Matt, too, had some pretty wonderful people surrounding him - although his life was far from perfect and easy-going. Given his experiences, he is (unknowingly) sort of a snob, aloof and haughty (he does realize this and corrects himself, thanks to his friends). He is also funny, thoughtful and kind.

I read romance novels because I am a sucker for romance. I love reading about people having happily ever afters because it makes life happier and better and just plain awesome, and my experience reading about Robert and Matt's story was no different. I LOVED their chemistry, sweetness, and awkwardness. Their story (and experience) was not all smooth-sailing, by any means, but they show that not all romances are easy. You have to fight for it, you have to trust, and more importantly you have to let go of your inhibitions and fears, because if you don't, you'll miss out on one of life's incredible gifts.

Also, aside from the romance between Robert and Matt, what I absolutely LOVED about this book, was that it showed how important friends are. Good friends lift you up when you're down and never let you wallow in pity forever. They let you know when you screw up and need to make amends. They help you realize that you are worth something when you have trouble believing it yourself. Good friends argue and have quarrels, but at the end of the day, you make up and life is good. And such are the friendships reflected in this book.

As always, with James' books, there are always the "I didn't see that coming!" moments, and trust me, I didn't see them coming. And also, just like with James' books, I always want to know more about the secondary characters and I hope their stories are forthcoming :)

As an aside, this book has an editor, but he needs to step up his game and earn his keep. I was still able to enjoy the book, but I do wish said editor did a better job.

Another great novel by James Lee Hard...Romantic, Sexy, Dramatic, Mysterious, Heartwarming and a great HEA. The story line within this story is strong bringing you into the chain of events that brings two men together into a love that each has been looking for. The main characters are well developed and very believable, who capture your heart in so many ways. Robert had been in a relationship for 15 years when he found his partner in bed with another man. He was devastated unable to continue his life with confidence, thinking he would never find love again because of his age and inability to forget what his partner had done to him. He went on a sabbatical from his work as a college professor for a year until he finally woke up one day realizing it was time to move on. Robert brings in a landscaping company to eliminate everything in his backyard that reminded him of Ted, his ex. He meets a young man, Matt, that takes his breath away, feeling safe around him, and yet not knowing what he was really feeling. His close friend, Harry, was with him, encouraging him to ask him out. During an impromptu get together at Robert's home for pizza, their journey begins. At Robert's surprise, Matt was just as interested, and the sparks fly between them. The sex was incredible and their feelings for each other grow. Robert goes through an accusation at the university he is at from a colleague, saying he is taking advantage of young boys in his class. This man has been after Robert and the tenure job for some time, trumping up these allegations until through investigations of the Tech department they find out what this man and his accomplice have been up to. One night Robert is home with a headache and Matt comes to bring him dinner. When he gets there, Robert's ex opens the door. Matt is determined to talk to Robert, but Ted only yells at him to leave, telling him that he and Robert are back together. Matt is crushed, gets drunk, but his roommate, Brian, convinces him to find out the facts. The story gets more and more dramatic as violence erupts, bringing Matt to Robert's side. This was a great story of growing love that overcomes the pitfalls of life. It has everything you would want in a story. Very well written and the oh so wonderful HEA. Don't miss this one. Loved it.

Title: Falling for Matt: A Second Chance Romance
Author: James Lee Hard
Series: N/A
Genre: MM Contemporary Romance

Main Characters :

Robert Cox is a newly single for the first time in fifteen years after his partner cheated. He has spent the last year wallowing in grief and self-pity but is finally ready to get his life back on track.

Matt is a young gardener whose parents kicked him out when they found out he was gay. He's been treading water trying to figure out his life ever since, but he knows he loves his job.

Plot/Conflict:

Robert is just now getting on his life after a fifteen year relationship ended in divorce. And it just happens to be with someone more than a decade younger than him. Between the age difference, and past heartbreaks, it takes a bit for these two to warm up to each other.

Loves:

There wasn’t a lot to say that I LOVED about this book. It was pretty sweet and fluffy all the way through, a solid “like” in most categories.

Likes:

The side plot conflict going on with Robert’s job kept the story flowing and moving forward besides just the romance storyline, which is always something I like and feel is necessary in romance novel.

Peeves:

Some small grammatical or spelling errors occasionally jarred you away from the story. Nothing horrendous though.

Matt was a pretty one-dimensional character for me. We knew what he did for a living and his apparent lack of communication with his parents, but there wasn’t a lot going on in his character background to really make me care about him one way the other.

Setting up one of the main relationship conflicts as the age gap relationship was fine, but the whole conflict with that age difference and Robert’s job was a little much for me. Robert was 39 dating a 26 year old, not exactly pedophilia, which is almost like what it felt it was being treated as.

This is the first book I have read by this author and it won't be the last. This was a beautifully written story of a man finding love again after the heartbreak of finding his long time partner in bed with another man. The characters really come to life and you find yourself drawn into the story and can easily imagine the surroundings and settings the author describes for you. It has everything from love at first sight, a jealous, bitter rival, a scheming ex, a heart in your mouth moment and of course the HEA. I really loved Robert and Matt and all of their friends but found myself disliking Ted and Joseph immensely! I would definitely recommend this book if you love reading a short, sweet and beautifully written m/m love story.

Age is just a number

Once again James didn't disappoint me. Another great read. What that great story about two people who find love in spite of differences in age and economics. Robert thought his time for love was over till he met matt. Matt made him feel like living after Robert spent a year morning the end of a 15 year relationship. Both men think the others to good for them. This book shows everyone can display insecurities regardless of who you are I highly recommend this book if your looking for a feel good book

3.5 stars rounded down.

I loved the set p and stuff, but I was kind of let down by the actual chemistry between the main leads. I was really looking forward to that, the build up, the romance, ya know, I mean, the huge age difference is one of my biggest hot buttons, but even that couldn't give me any enjoyment because we don't even get to see the leads interacting all that much. And I don't even mean sex (there's very little of it, which is one aspect of what I liked), but actual cuddly times and talking, and stuff.

Was pretty okay, but not worth 4 stars.

An Enjoyable Read.

I'm glad I took a chance and read this book because it really was quite enjoyable. I have read this author previously without much in the way of enjoyment but his writing has definitely improved. Ok, some of the situations were a bit cliche and unoriginal but when you read as much as I do then that is to be expected.

P.s. diner is a dinner destination...dinner is the meal.

Thoroughly enjoyed. 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5.

It was far from perfect and got a bit long-winded at times, but it was very good. I bought the relationship, found the sex pretty well done, and the story... while a standard cliche... decently executed. I enjoyed that there was a top and a bottom without any real discussion or BDSM. Most stories seem to want to include a switch.

It isn't going to win any writing prizes or originality prizes, but it was quite good anyway.

Sweet storey, liked the two MCs and even didn't mind the annoying Harry. The writing however was pretty mediocre. Will give this author another go all the same.

This is a delightfully heartwarming romance. Unfortunately the prose is clunky and some of the events strain belief.

The shortcomings in grammar and the typing errors are unforgivable. The storytelling could benefit from a good editor.

At its heart, there is a sound story to be told about a relationship which works despite age and class differences. There are moments that work beautifully. But all too often the story comes crashing down, often due to melodramatic twists.

Very enjoyable read

A well written and well proofed read. Likeable characters, a little slow at the beginning but low on the angst, didn't induce eye rolls and left me with the warm and fuzzy feels.

Falling for Matt is James's most recent work, a contemporary second chance romance that I was particularly looking forward to, after all who doesn't this type of romance book.
Robert is still trying to pick up the pieces after his long standing partner betrays him in the very worst way, after grieving his lost relationship he simply decides enough is enough and that he must continue to live, to try and find some semblance of a happy life.

So Robert meets Matt, instant attraction, absolutely, but instant love absolutely not, so those of you out there that are not keen on that, don't worry, it's a work in progress.
Their relationship starts out very tentatively, not entirely sure if it is just attraction or the basis of something more, is the age gap too much to navigate, are their lifestyles just too different and can they withstand the whispers that will surely happen.

Robert was a very strong character despite his recent troubles, but he was still very vulnerable in many ways, he was identifiable and that's a great skill that I admire in James, his ability to take a character and any given situation and make his readers understand what each person is going through and just feel it.
Matt was a super sweet hardworking guy who also had harboured some reservations about a relationship with Robert, for differing reasons but valid just the same.
I adored their gentle flirting, the sidelong glances and the way in which the relationship felt natural and not forced, how it evolved into something strong and permanent.

Aside from the two main characters we had a whole host of outside characters that added another dimension to the story, we had Harry and oh how I adored him as Roberts best friend, he was someone that we would all want to be spend time with, loyal, supportive and hysterically funny. We also had the meaner characters such as the Awful Ex Ted and and equally awful work colleague Joseph who brought the necessary angst and the OMG parts to the storyline. Boy oh boy did they do that in spades.
There was a host of other characters that you meet but all had a place, none were surplus to the requirements of the story.

James gets so much better with each book, his writing style is sensitive, emotive, precise and skilful. He crafts his book from the heart which allows us the reader to be so involved in the story that we feel we know the characters, we see what they see and we feel what they feel and we hope beyond hope that they reach the HEA at the end.
The story essentially was about finding ones self, healing, friendship and learning to love again.

The words flowed seamlessly from chapter to chapter and from page one I just knew it was going to be a favourite, it just had all the feels, the connection you want, in the way you want it.
A beautiful, poignant and realistic look at second chance love, an intricately woven tale of hope which Instills happiness and joy into the reader until the very last page, and is surely deserving of way more than 5 super shiny stars

'He was 39,all alone and didn't know if he had the strength to rebuild his life'
'The cute 'kid' in his back-yard who made him feel alive for the first time in months'

I was first introduced to this author by a friend, and have read all their previous books, while I enjoyed the stories, some I felt were rushed, with endings left with loose ends-with the exception of his "Rift Trilogy" which, for me,was his best work....that is until reading THIS story!

Falling for Matt: A Second Chance at Love is a story which I quickly got drawn into, and that is all down to the quality of the writing, the character's and the plot, the intimate scenes are tastefully written (the first being in at about 50% into the book) and are done in such a way as not to be the main focus (they are a very HOT added bonus of course!)

I don't want to give all that much away of the story, the description gives the reader all you need to get started, but what I will say is that I loved both male leads,Robert and Matt, the side character's of Harry and Brian, although of course there are -Ted (Robert's cheating Ex) and Joseph (the teacher out to cause Robert issues)...can't really say what I thought of them(when you read you will have a good idea!) The story really flows nicely, sweet, hot where it needs to be,some angst added yet an Epilogue that ends happily!

Congratulations James Lee Hard...you have created a beautiful story Thank You

Falling for Matt.
Well this book certainly was a beautiful read even though Robert goes through heartbreak after his 'Then' life partner betrays him in the worse way.
Robert must live and take back his own life which is a step with in itself, but a journey full of emotions.

As Robert is living then 'Boom' Matt is just their he's an older attractive man that has Roberts temperature spiking, I love that this isn't love at first sight that it's a relationship that moves so fast you don't get to truly appreciate them as a whole.

Robert and Matt are similar in ways with each reservations on one another's relationship.
I loved these two how they flowed along just enjoying each other no rushing it was fresh to see general flirting.
I felt with Matt being older he gave Robert the strength he needed.

I loved how this book gave us a budding romance with old fashion wooing but we get the mix of characters which brought more grit to the story.
I won't say who these are but they certainly will have you wanting to shake them.

James knows how to write intriguing characters who has you feeling you've known then a lifetime.
This book will have your heart blossom then gritty teeth with an added bonus of fun in the mix.
I'm not going to say any more this is one you have to read.
It was a pleasure to have found Matt. :)
I recommend this to all and give it a beautiful soul touching 4 Stars
Looking forward to more coming.

3.5*

Ok, so there are a few grammatical errors and a couple of daft sentences that didn't entirely make sense but the story itself makes up for it. I slightly take exception to the suggestion that being over 40 means your best days are gone (that's a fault of many authors, not just this one) but characters do seem to be quite whiny about that particular milestone.

What I did like though was the insecure, nerdiness of Robert and hunky Matt in his overalls doing the gardening. The professor and the gardener. Two very different men who have an instant attraction and kind of dance around each other, convinced that the other won't be interested because of these differences. There's plenty romance and sexy time between the two MC's but there's also quite a bit of drama that comes in the form of Ted, the gold digging ex and Joseph the jealous work colleague. There's actually quite a lot goes on in this book so I was kept interested the whole way through. There is the obligatory HEA (phew!) but I was disappointed by the epilogue. I expected a bit of a jump into the future and was excited to see what stage the couple were at now. Unfortunately, absolutely nothing had changed, the men are still just happy. I wanted wedding plans - well, that's what they're doing my head anyway.....

I absolutely loved this book!... It contains everything you need to keep you reading and not be able to stop! From a brilliant story line that you just NEED to know what's going to happen next, to the 2 gorgeous alpha males with huge hearts, and the sex... WOW just WOW... Will leave you breathless and panting!!!
Robert was with Ted for 15 years, his life stopped when he caught him cheating, and now 1 year on, it's finally time to move on!!!
Matt has been hired along with Mr Lyle to 'redo' Robert's garden! When Robert comes face to face with Matt, not only do they feel the energy between them, but the way in which this book is written, the energy actually buzzes through the pages!!! They have a few problems that need to be overcome... Will they pull through? Or is it too much stress on their new relationship? Then to top it off... A huge twist towards the end, will leave you gob smacked!!! (i could hardly swallow the lump in my thoat!!!)
The whole story is wonderful and written with amazing passion to the point i couldn't stop reading once i started!!! I recommend this 10/10 m/m read for anyone that loves a light read with a beautiful HEA!!!... BEAUTIFUL!!!

DNF'd at 52% so I'm not going to rate. This book just wasn't my cuppa. The writing style was too formal for me, so I wasn't able to really get into the story. Couldn't really connect with the MC or the love interest; they both seemed very 2D to me. Also, a couple of things really annoyed me and kind of made me lose interest: 1- Robert says he's "probably going to get tenure," but the guy just took a year off work because his boyfriend cheated on him. Maybe this only bothers me so much because I work in higher ed and find it pretty unlikely that someone who just took an unexpected year off work because his significant other cheated on him probably isn't going to make it past the tenure and promotion committee. 2- The antagonist of the story, Joseph, calling Robert a pedophile and insinuating that he is "disgusting" and dating students because he saw him on a date with a 26-year-old man was just insane. That whole scene was above and beyond reason. I get that the author wanted to inject some angst/drama, but this was an incredibly implausible way to do it.

This book just wasn't my cup of tea. YMMV.

3 - 3.5 Sweet stars

This was the first book I have read by James Lee Hard, and I enjoyed it. It was a sweet love story about two completely different men, one close to 40 (Robert) and the other in his late 20’s (Matt), who find each other in a second chance at love.

Their lifestyles, careers and the age gap had my interest piqued. Complete opposites. Don’t they say opposites attract?

It is full of drama and there is a lot going on within this story. The plot thickens at every turn which will keep you entertained to know more.

I have to be honest and say one thing though; it was a little hard to read it in the third person for me. I would have preferred it to be in each of the character’s POV and there were a number of grammatical errors which I looked over, but in saying that, I couldn’t put it down. Weird I know. I just needed to know what was going to happen next.

This is a really sweet romance, reminding us we are never too old to find happiness and to be true to ourselves.
The story features Robert, a college professor on sabbatical, having discovered his partner had cheated on him. Descending into depression and almost bereavement, his friend Harry child's and encourages him to step out of bed and back into the land of the living again. One of his early steps is to have his garden re-landscaped, and when the men arrive to do the work, the younger man, Matt, catches Robert's eye. Each decide that they aren't good enough for one another for reasons of age and finance but in the end a HEA awaits.

An interesting story about a second chance at love. It's a good read that keeps you not wanting to put the book down. It's sweet & has a few twists that'll make your mouth drop open, Haha. Robert has money & Matt do , but not as much, they have different friends & totally opposite jobs & theres also an age gap between Robert & Matt by 13 years , so they have to get through this & other obstacles to find their way to accept & love each other, but what people say, age is just a number right? Love is love...

A lovely sweet romance from this amazing new author. Robert is fast approaching his 40th birthday and recently found his long term partner in bed with another man, he is feeling rather lousy about himself. Matt works for a small business that Robert has brought in to redesign his garden. As soon as Robert sees Matt he feels an attraction but he is totally hung up on the age difference. I love Robs friend Harry in this story he brings some great humour to the story. They are a few twists and turns along the way and I'm glad it wasn't to angsty. I loved it!!

Robert and Matt, what to say about this story........
Absolutely loved it !! Yet again James has written a story that has a great storyline, amazing chemistry and a few twists along the way too.
I loved the fact that even though it can come across as an "instalove" between Robert and Matt, it isn't. It starts as a mutual attraction but neither think the other is gay, or they think that they've got a partner. What i also loved was how Harry and Brian, best friends to Robert and Matt, tease the guys all throughout the story but also are strong for them to when needed.
Absolutely brilliant !!
