Rate this book
Promises are meant to be kept—but Patrick O’Brien is too numb with grief… Patrick hasn’t been able to move past the loss of his wife, who died while delivering his twin boys—Finn and Connor. While life continues around him, he is left in a state of emotional suspension, unable to honor his final vow to his wife and move on after she is gone. Faking it only goes so far… Always known as the moody older brother, Patrick maintains his distance from his overbearing but loving family. He’s barely coping, but still finds a way to be the best father he can to his sons. Amber Miller returns home and finds more than the small town she left behind… With her son in tow, Amber reluctantly returns to Birch Valley when her parents ask for help. Their well-known diner, Herrick’s, is a staple in the community. But more than that, her father is ill, and they need the extra set of hands to keep the place going. Lonely hearts attract… When Patrick and Amber cross paths, their instant attraction catches both off guard. Working through their own kinds of grief, the two must figure out what they want for their future—even if it’s not each other. Patrick's Promise (Cloverleaf #3) Tales From Birch Valley by author Gloria Herrmann.

Standalone with HFN ending. We will read more of Patrick and Amber in the continuing series. All good ;)
POV: Told in third-person alternating perspectives by main and secondary characters.
Series: Cloverleaf: #1 Loving Liam; #2 Maggie's Marriage; #3 Patrick's Promise; #4 Dating Daniel and coming soon, #5 Chasing Chelsea.

Patrick and Amber.....

Cloverleaf continues with the third book, Patrick's Promise. Of all the O'Brien siblings, it was Patrick's story I was most anticipating. Patrick is the oldest; nearly 40. He is also the one with a heartbreaking past. For the past four years, he has lived with the grief of tragically losing his wife. Beth died as a result of a car accident. But thank God the doctors were able to save the babies (twins) she was pregnant with. Finn and Cooper.

Patrick has never been able to let go of his grief and pain. He is understandably moody and his family walks on egg shells around him.

Amber Miller returns to Birch Valley to help with her family diner. Her father has been sick and her parents need her. Amber is worried about her father being ill, however she plans to use this opportunity for herself to heal. You see...Amber has also lost a spouse tragically. Her husband died two years ago. She too is still grieving, along with her preteen son.

Patrick and Amber are instantly attracted to each other which comes as a surprise to them both. Neither was looking for another relationship. Fortunately they are the perfect medicine to help each other open up and heal their hearts. This is not something that happens quickly or easily. As a matter of fact, guilt plays a big part of causing Patrick to put emotional distance between them. Like that would even work. Once Patrick realizes how much he cares for Amber, they are able to move forward. Together. I liked Patrick; he was an amazing brother and father. Protective of those he loved. But I really adored Amber. For all that she had been through and give the fact she only had half the time to grieve that Patrick had, she was emotional strong. She saw a chance at love again and was willing to take it.

The ending of the book was good, a happy for now. However, we will hear more from Patrick and Amber as well as other characters in the next book, Dating Daniel.

Patrick's Promise was another heartwarming, sweet and romantic addition to the Cloverleaf series.

I was anxiously waiting to read this book. Patrick is my favorite O’Brien, and I’ve dreamt for him a special story. And Gloria Herrmann hasn’t disappointed me. She has written for Patrick the sweetest, the best and the perfect story.

Patrick is a widower. His wife Beth died, leaving him to raise their twins, Finn and Connor. From her death, he has built a wall around his heart, shutting down even his own family. The only thing that keeps him going on are his twins. What he doesn’t expect is to find love again.

Amber is a widow. Her husband, a cop, has been killed leaving her alone with his twelve years old son, Dylan. A family emergency brings them back to Birch Valley. What she doesn’t expect is to find love again.

Will Amber and Patrick be able to overcome their fears, insecurities and pain, and have a second chance to live and love?

This book is beautiful, sweet, and moving. At the end of it I had to restock my Kleenex for the tears I cried. The emotions, the feelings of grieving their loss are not dramatic, but not even sugarcoated, they are simply real. I instantly connected with Amber and Patrick, knowing very well how it feels to lose someone so close to your heart.

Patrick reacted to his wife death withdrawing into himself. Looking at his brother Liam and his sister Maggie so happy and with babies on the way is painful for him, but what I loved about him is that he is not jealous in a bad way, or angry or resentful. Sometimes his feelings are shaken for the sudden memories of his past. And he’s handsome as much as stubborn and in some situation a jerk. His favorite sentence is: “Don't stick your nose in my business.” I would have slept him on the head when he argued with Maggie and Daniel.

Amber is a sweet character. She’s a loving and caring mother and daughter. The loss of his husband has left her empty and the only way to find solace is to write in her blog and ride her bicycle. Her journal is her relief valve and her bicycle helps her to keep her mind clear.

I liked how Amber and Patrick’s relationship grows. Between the two there is an undeniable chemistry, but they are willing to give one another the needed space to process their emotions. And Patrick, when sex with Amber is involved, has surprised me.

Another aspect I’ve loved so much of this book is how the author describes Birch Valley. The descriptions are so vivid and real that I could see the blue sky, the mountains, and even smell the air before a storm or in the summer nights. I can figure me riding a bicycle on the streets of Birch Valley with Amber. Delightful!

Even if the focus is on Patrick and Amber’s story, there is another side story that has great relevance: Liam and Rachel marriage. Here we meet again with Chelsea, Rachel's best friend. And my feeling about her is still same: I don’t like Chelsea! Even if at the end she soften a little bit she's still too snobby and full of herself.

And the O’Brien family… well they are O’Brien! Generous, protective, accepting, caring, they made your heart warm and wish to be part of the family.

Grandpa Paddy has a soft spot in my heart. He doesn’t speak much, but a simple gesture or glance from him speaks volumes. I liked the bound between Patrick and Grandpa Paddy and their silent understanding.

Gloria Herrmann’s writing is improving with each book. The characters, main or secondary, have great personality, and the storyline is engaging and very well developed. I think there is a great potential not only for Daniel’s story, that will be the next book in the series, but also for further installment. I personally would love to read something more about Ethan, Rachel's brother.

Patrick’s Promise is a sweet romance, heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. A book about second chances, family, friendship and everlasting love.

My review doesn't do justice to this book, but so far it's my favorite in the Cloverleaf Series, that I highly recommend to start right away.

I’ll be back soon Birch Valley, Daniel’s story is coming!

This is my first visit to the Cloverleaf series and even though I haven’t read the first two books yet, it is easy to understand the characters, the family dynamics and the lovely setting in Birch Valley. This is a feel good sweet romantic story, which is filled with poignancy, good old fashioned romance and a family reminds me of ‘The Waltons’, with a twenty-first century twist.
Patrick lost the love of his life in the worst way possible, left to raise the sons his wife never saw; he relies on his family’s practical support but closes his emotions off and refuses to let them in. Her father’s serious illness forces Amber back to her hometown to help with the family business. Amber and Patrick’s meeting turns out to be a turning point for both of them.
Perfectly paced the story follows Patrick and Amber’s fledgling relationship against the background of family illness and a very special family wedding. This is a great standalone read but I like the other characters so much that I will have to read the other books in the series.
Complex vivid characters enhanced with a small town setting and strong familial ties. The romance is gentle but the emotion is strong and realistic. Patrick’s promise is the perfect combination for romantic escape.
I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

Patrick is still suffering the loss of his wife Beth who died from injuries received in a car wreck four years ago. He is raising his twin sons Finn and Conner who have never known what it is to have a Mother.
Patrick isn’t happy with his meddling family most especially his sister Maggie who set him up on an internet dating site. He doesn’t need their help and doesn’t want to find someone to replace Beth, even though he made her a promise that he would go on with his life. Patrick is the oldest of his siblings and has taken over the O’Brien family construction business. So with that and his sons he feels like he has gone on with his life.
When Amber Herrick/Mills lost her husband two years ago and was left with a young son to raise on her own in Portland she never dreamed she would be moving back to Birch Valley. When her Dad gets sick, she is headed back home to help her parent run Herrick’s dinner. When Amber and her soon to be 13yr old son Dylan have a flat out on a back road with no cell signal she doesn’t know what she is going to do. Patrick lends a hand and she sees those eyes. “The O’Briens all wore their emotions in the eyes whether it be happiness, anger, sadness, or desire.” Amber saw sadness and kindness. Sparks fly and they learn they really like each other but when Rachel and Liam get married it brings back a lot of hurt, worry and bad memories for Patrick and he closes himself off again.
Will Patrick ever be able to get over his loss or will he keep pushing everyone away?
This book is the third in the series and I loved it like I did all the rest. I highly recommend this book and this author. I received an ARC of this book from the author for an honest review

As the pitter-patter of tiny feet grows and excitement grows following the second book in the Cloverleaf series, the third in the series, I assure you is equally as lovely...

As we learn more about the most troubled O'Brien brother, we learn of his heartache of losing the woman he loved side by side with becoming a new father. So, seeing his brothers and sister settling down on the previous books was bound to stir up emotions!

Despite Patrick becoming a widow and single father four years ago, he still hurts greatly and pushes everyone away who try to help. But he was asked to keep the promise of giving his heart to another...but could his broken heart be trusted with anyone else? Or would he be safer keeping everyone at a distance emotionally?

Excerpt
You guys lost a piece of me too. I'm
Sorry I shut you all out...

A lovely story seeing all the couples we have met so far on the series grow, develop and settle into their lives together both as couples but generally all as members of the very incredible and formidable O'Brien family...

Final excerpt:
No matter what happens, we're here, we always will be. We're O'Briens, we stick together.

Another brilliant instalment from Gloria Herrmann and I'm so excited for the next book to learn more about the expanding family and more of their well deserved happiness.

Patrick's Promise was my favourite (so far) in the Cloverleaf Series.

Patrick is a single dad to twin four year old boys, trying to hold on to a promise he never thought he'd have to make. A promise he can't forget. A promise he never thought he'd have to deal with. A promise he now had to confront. A promise that he's never confessed to anyone he made, one that he's carrying the burden alone.

When a blast from the past enters with a flat tyre, the promise Patrick made to his wife seems even heavier and even harder to carry.

With his brother's wedding plans in motion around him, his sister's progressing pregnancy and his families determination to see him happy, Patrick can't escape the feelings that are growing within him, no matter how much he tries to hide them.

The O'Brien family is one I'd love to be a part of - Mary's feasts constantly make me hungry.

Gloria invites us to sit down at the O'Brien family dinner and enjoy their company once again and this time, it's Patrick's smile we are their to witness. I loved this book and hope their is more to come.

I really just love the O'Brian family. They are like the family next door that everyone knows and loves. With each book the story has went from strength to strength. The family have had their fair share of ups and downs, but as a family they all pull together.

This book was more insight on Patrick. He lost his wife four years ago in a car accident and on that day he become a father to twin boys. He has lived hos life around them and never moved on...until Amber Herrick moves back to town to help her sick father out.

Amber lost her husband 2 years ago as he was a police officer. She has spent the last two years raising their son. Patrick and Amber are in the same boat and they are immediately attracted to one another. It isn't until Amber has an accident that Patrick opens his eyes and notices what he has been like over the years. He can't live without Amber and her son and that was the wake up call he needed.

I've loved all three books and I do hope there will be more in this series. It is on of those series that you could read all day long, every day.

Where to start with this . First off this is for all 3 books. This was a wonderful , sweet, heartfelt series. I had my ugly cry a few times. And when it was all over with I felt happy yet so sad they were all over with. Book one Liam/Rachel start if there story was great, I laughed more than I think I should . B/c Rachel and her parking spots kidnapping. Then we have Maggie/Michael now they are already married. But Michael has his sights on a different prize than Maggie. I felt connected to Maggie in more way than one. Then we have Patrick/Amber. Now this one was my ugly cry book. But it was just b/c of his love for his late wife and his adorable twins.

These are sweet romance, you know the kind of they kissed and then it is the next morning. And really that was what these books needed. Because of the story behind them is so emotional, and heart warming sex isn't needed.

Congrats Gloria you have a set of real winners here!!

Well, it's decidedly so, Patrick is my favorite O'Brien brother so far! I really was excited to see where Gloria would take him and the twins, and she did a great job! Life does strange things through tragedy, and it brought this family together even more. Getting to know Patrick better and what makes him, him was so great. And learning about the new things in the others lives is always a bonus, as not to forget where we all started with the O'Brien's. Now what kind of shenanigans can Daniel get into, haha, I am eager to see...

I thought this book would be better than it actualy was. I felt Patrick was a bit of a selfish ass on how he treated Amber. I didnt like how a good chunk of the book in the points of views of everyone else in the book. I didn't really feel like the relationship between Patrick and Amber grew .

A sweet story. The characters (even the secondary ones) are well developed with good chemistry, strong character traits and are very likeable and relatable. The contrast between how a man deals with grief vs a woman was the best quality of the book for me; even if that wasn't the authors intention. The struggle, despair, guilt and anguish of handling grief, learning to overcome obstacles, getting on with everyday life (i.e. continuing to raise children) and moving forward was handled well. That being said, what brought me down was the constant repetitive reference to eye color (of almost all the characters). The color of eyes don't change in adults (unless they wear contact lens), so every time eyes are mentioned why restate the color? Wouldn't it be better to describe the emotions displayed rather than again mentioning the color? Additionally, the dialogue was a bit stilted. Particularly when the Irish brogue was used. It's difficult to accurately deliver writing that conveys the Irish brogue in a believable manner. It fell short in this book. Overall, I'd say the book was okay, easy to read and pleasant (even though it deals with grief).

Amazing Story of Lost and Love

This story had tears in my eyes more than I typically have in a book, however this books tears were good. The author Gloria Herrmann did a beautiful job of writing heartbreaking life experiences and the healing process. And then the eventual ability to live and love again. It was a great book and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to read a heart breaking and warming story

Patrick's Promise is the third installment in the Cloverleaf series, a clean romance quartet following the lives of the O'Brien siblings. In this book, we're met with the question of how you move on when life steals away the one you love.

Patrick, the oldest of the O'Brien siblings, has dealt with crushing grief everyday for the past four years. Just as his life was finally turning out perfectly, with his beloved wife, Beth about to give birth to their precious twins, she's killed by a drunk driver. On the same day that the light left her eyes, his boys burst into his life. He became a widower and a father, at the same time. For awhile, he didn't know how he'd survive it but time marches on. Now Finn and Connor are turning four tears old and Patrick's still not sure he'll ever be able to keep the promise he made to his dying wife. His family tries to help but he knows no one understands his pain. Will he ever be able to move on?

Amber Herrick and her son, Dylan have also experienced crushing loss, losing her husband and Dylan's dad, in the line of duty. It's been a difficult two years, to say the least. Dylan's growing into a teenager without a man around and Amber misses being someone's partner in life. Oh well, she doesn't have time to think much about it anymore, her dad's sick and needs her help to run the family diner She'd do anything to be coming home for a different reason but maybe returning to Birch Valley, her hometown, will give them a fresh start!

Grief, the monster that comes to stay when the Grim Reaper walks away. Grief is a powerful emotion that can steal the joy from even the best days, if we let it. From the upcoming birthday of his precious sons, to the wedding of his brother and the impending births of new O'Briens, life is bittersweet for Patrick. He still feels the loss of Beth in every special moment. If he's honest with himself, he knows he's missing out but he just doesn't know how to move on. Maybe he and Amber can figure it out together?

Another great clean romance in the Cloverleaf Series.

Patrick's Promise by Gloria Herrmann

Since I started this series I have been eagerly awaiting for Patrick's story. Patrick is the strong, tall, handsome and silent type. He's strong, because he's been forced to be. After years of trying to conceive a baby, Patrick and his wife FINALLY find out they are expecting twins and feel their life is headed in the direction they had planned for it to go. That all changes after a terrible car crash leaving Patrick a single dad of newborn twin boys.

Fast forward 4 years. Patrick is surrounded by an amazing family; but it's not enough to fill the void in his heart. Watching his siblings settle down and start families is bittersweet. Then, he finds Amber. Returning to Birch Valley to help her parents at the towns diner, she comes with her own set of baggage. But, a spark of desire lights up within Patrick. Both adults still mourning the loss of their spouses, both now single parents, both sharing a mutual attraction.

The authors writing just gets stronger and stronger with this series. I fell more in love with Patrick through out his story. His story pulls at your heart strings--so be prepared to shed some tears. It's also so heartwarming though that you will get that warm fuzzy feeling inside. Loved!

I am so in love with this book. I thought Liam's story was amazing. Oh my, Patrick just melts my heart. Patrick has suffered such a tragic loss of losing his wife while she was pregnant with his two sons. He is the best dad ever to the boys and they are just little angels. Patrick has not dated since Beth passed away nor has he wanted to. Patrick has kept to himself and not worried about replacing her. He is the most handsome man in town and all of the girls have always just fallen at his heels but he is just not interested. All he wants to do is be a dad to his precious sons. Patrick has the most amazing family as well. They would do anything in the world for him or anyone else in the family. I do not want to give any of the story away to readers so I will just say that this is my favorite of the series. I hope everyone loves it as much as I have. I did not want it to end. Gloria you are truly amazing...

This is my third visit to the cloverleaf series and yet again it did not disappoint. In this story we get to read all about Patrick and to find out why he is so sad and down. He has been through hell but so has his family yet he pushes them away all the time blocking them from helping him through it. We also find out more about the rest of the family and a little more about Daniel who's book is next in the series. I would highly recommend this book to others as a fantastic read. Cant wait for Daniel now!!

I've been following Gloria Herrmann for a while now. I love her writing style, she makes you feel like you're in the book. She's descriptive and easy to read at the same time. The O'Brien's are great. They're a family in all the sense of the word; and just as family, they do tend to mend in other's matters.
I loved how she pictured Patrick's situation. You empathize with him, even though he can act out like a complete brat sometimes. I was so happy that he found a happy ending, because I'd been secretly crushing on him since book one! ;)

I have been waiting for Patrick's story since I read the first! I was so glad with how it turned out. Although there were moments I was frustrated with him for not confiding in his family, but all in all it was another great book in this series! So far it was my favorite but let's see if it still stands after I read Daniel's book :)

Awesome

Loved getting into this awesome family. I could not put this book down. To love again after such great loss will teach you to not take a day with some you love for granted. Sometimes we are lucky enough to be reminded we are not promised tomorrow. Loved this story, loved this family. Thank you Gloria Herrmann.

Enjoyed Patrick's Promise very much. It is nice to read about close family ties. Patrick lost his wife while in childbirth. He has twin boys as the result. He is a great father, son and brother. Now Patrick is frightened to fall in love with a woman that has returned to his hometown.

I have been waiting to get to this book and I was so happy when I finally did. Patrick's story promised to be good and Gloria did not disappoint. I think Patrick has been my favorite from the beginning but to finally understand what is going through his head really made me feel happy, yet sad because his story is such a sad one. Patrick and Amber's story is a happily enough ending but it will be good to see how things continue. It's good to see how things are progressing with the rest of the O'Brien clan as well.

As we learn more about the most troubled O'Brien brother, we learn of his heartache of losing the woman he loved side by side with becoming a new father. So, seeing his brothers and sister settling down on the previous books was bound to stir up emotions!

Amber is a hard working mom trying to rasie her son and help her sickly parents out all while dealing with grief and loss. She is an amazing character and she comes at such a perfect time to meet Patrick who is dealing with and going through so much because of losing his wife and having to raise his boys alone.
