*This is an alternate cover edition*

Family secrets never stay buried.

When Allie Stuart begins researching the seedy underworld of supernatural creatures, vampire machinations, and paranormal counterplots, her search engine leads her straight to Nathan Carter and his merry band of conspiracy theorists.

Facing thirty and feeling overwhelmed by her grandfather’s Alzheimer’s, a relationship that is cooling down instead of heating up, and a detour in her research career, the odd ramblings of the ParaLine group offer an amusing distraction. Nathan Carter, however, has other plans for Allie. When he decides to use her as bait in a war against an undead prince, Allie comes face to face with the reality behind Carter’s narrative. The truth, and the family secrets it reveals, will bring more change than she would have ever wished for.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Please, don’t get my rating wrong. This book has a lot of things going for it, but it’s just not for me. Thus why I gave it the 2-star rating for “it was okay.”

The plot moved a little too slowly for my tastes. I was interested at first, but there’s a solid chunk in the beginning/middle that I can’t even remember what really happens. Like the book blurb says, the main character does investigate the supernatural world and she does get involved in a conspiracy group, but she goes to one meeting. Aside from the occasional run-in with the leader of said group, that’s the extent of her involvement.

Maybe I was just taken aback because that was what I thought the main point of the book would be, and that’s not the case. I can’t pinpoint exactly what the overarching plotline is. There are a lot of little mini-plotlines brought up: such as her failing romantic relationship, the start of a new potential relationship, the weird colors she’s seeing at the edges of her vision, her grandfather’s failing health, etc. The whole conspiracy-group thing seems to blend in with the rest of those storylines.

There were also times that I didn’t believe the reactions of Allie, the main character. When faced with such big news, she’s confused. Though there is a bit of disbelief mixed in there, it’s mostly confusion that she shows. The way these characters explain things is really not that difficult to understand. Difficult to believe, maybe. But for an intelligent biology professor, it shouldn’t be too tricky to understand the concepts being brought up.

Contributing to the slow pace of the plot is that there are no really big climaxing moments. There’s not one moment where I was on the edge of my seat, freaking out about what was going to happen. The big event that did happen where the future looked uncertain was quickly dealt with; I didn’t even have time to worry about the danger that Allie was in. There was then another part that seemed like it should be suspenseful, but by that point I was no longer invested in the story.

But this book has good aspects, too. The love story, for one. I really like the love interest, and I like how the relationship develops. It doesn’t feel rushed or forced. It’s natural, and the ending scene of the book is a very sweet one. I do love a happy (at least for now) ending – who doesn’t?

And there’s also the world in which these characters live. The way that the different supernatural beings interact and run things is very interesting to read about. I imagine that the second book in the series will be much better than the first, because everything has already been introduced and therefore the second book is free to get into the nitty-gritty. I just wish that this installment had been less of an introduction to the series and more of an active participant in it.

Final Rating: 2 stars

This book had an unconventional concept where Allie stumbles onto the paranormal due to her investigations and I was eager to read her story. My imagination went wild and I expected a big reveal, manipulations, a conspiracy or two, something fast paced filled with adventure. My thoughts after finishing the book -

The Good
The Men in Allie's Life
Allie is in a less than satisfactory relationship but her life is not as hopeless as it seems. There is a new potential relationship brewing in the background. She has a friend who supports her and tries to smooth things over for her. She has people who care about her and believe she deserves the best.

The Vampire Prince Sorrel
If this were a movie I would describe him as the character who had minimum screen time but made maximum impact. He was intriguing and I wish he was a bigger part of the story and we see him in the sequel.

The Bad
Allie
She was confused and indecisive most of the time which got on my nerves. She was upset that she was not a priority for the important people in her life and obsessed about it at times. But whenever anyone turned up she would push them away or ask for space. Over and over again. She was inconsistent and this makes it difficult to connect to her.

The best friend
She could be pushy and irritating at times

Events around Allie
Allie has a sad past and a chaotic present. Her life is crumbling around her but at times it felt like too much tragedy for one person. Maybe it will be revealed that she is some sort of cursed creature in the sequel.

& The Ugly
75% of the book is Allie's life falling apart and the fantasy bit is just the last few chapters. This is where things get exciting & we catch a glimpse of the paranormal world the author is building, it looks promising. Its over too soon and I wished at times that Allie's personal life was pushed to the background.

This book gets three stars for the guys - Ben, Harding and Sorrel who kept me interested, invested and entertained.

Starts out slow, like 3/4 th's of the book has less to nothing paranormal in it, but the last part is full. Its a slow builder for book 2. Altho given the slow start i really enjoyed it and wasnt bothered.

To be brutally honest, I really liked this book. I enjoyed the way the author played with this reader's mind. The story would rush forward, then a brief lull to gather my senses and then: Bam!

I have a second love in reading right after scifi and that is the paranormal. This book kind of blends the two, just as all paranormal books should do.

As with all new authors I read who plan a series, I will withhold a "fifth: star until i have read the next book.

Highly suggest you read this book.

Overall this was a really good book. But I think that it was a little to fast paced. I mean, one minute Carter is just some regular human who kidnapped Allie. But then he was a vampire who kidnapped Allie to get to the vampire Sorell, who is by the way the Prince of the vampires of America! Is it just me or is it fast paced? There is a good character set up, with the brooding romance between Allie and Ben. But then there is the friend of Allie's for six years, Harding. I have a feeling, or at least hope, that there will be a sort of love triangle between the three of them. That would be interesting. And then there is Allie's father. He left her and her mother when she was ten. But he did it to keep Allie safe, because he saw the future and how powerful Allie would become. He left her a letter and a journal explaing some of the things that are just being introduced into her life. Her father is a Watcher, he can see the future. He also worked for Sorrell. I am looking forward to seeing what is inside the journal.

I like that Ben and Allie are trying to work things out between them, so they can be together. I think that they are good together. Although, I don't think that Ben should have kept that his family worked for Sorrell from Allie. And I think that Harding might be in love with Allie. But I am not sure.

I really want to find out what exactly Allie's abilities are. Her father, who left her over twenty years ago, left her a letter saying that she will be really powerful and that people will come after her. We already now that she can tell what kind of person someone is by seeing a certain color, aura type thing.I also want to see if Allies father is still alive if and if will Allie go after him and will she find him?

I gave this book four stars because I thought things were a little fast paced. But over all it was a great book! I would recommend to people who like the YA paranormal romance! :)

I received a free advanced reading copy in exchange for my review.

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this novel. It's a mix of romance and fantasy, but it's not a paranormal romance novel.

mild-spoiler summary: the first 70% of the novel is casually paced, focusing on her relationship with her grandfather, her fiancee, and her best friends. The last 30% is the main fantasy portion.

I would have enjoyed it more if the secrets were revealed throughout the novel instead of all at once. There were just a lot of little scenes that didn't contribute much to the novel, probably for character building. I think it would have improved if the author removed the fiancee altogether. I might just be biased since i dislike jealous boyfriends for personal reasons, but i definitely liked Allie less because of it. Despite the title "The Watcher's Daughter", we see very little of the father and much more of the grandfather, whose role is left unexplained. While the ending isn't a cliff-hanger, the author ends the novel with more questions than answers.

I was really excited about this book. After I read the introduction, I was looking forward to an adult version of those young-adult books, which has an interesting unorthodox base idea, maybe a part-fantasy world with magical creatures or characters with supernatural abilities. Well, it certainly had some magical and supernatural aspect and story. There were quite a few well-built character and a story, which usually is missing from those YA, but no more word of them. But this book just somehow couldn’t handle my expectations.
For starters, it felt like the story was more focused on the main character, Allie, getting through the big turn in her life, which was quite a good part. She was uncertain and made good and bad decisions likewise. It felt real, except the fact that everyone around her was successful in life and adored her to the fullest. Maybe it was just the perspective of the storyteller Allie. Books focusing on this usually have a twist to them, making it a thriller or a detective book. Well here, it is… supernatural (what a surprise, after spoiling that earlier in the review). I will be honest, I wasn’t missing the twist in the book, but it was crawling in slowly. And it just felt a bit weird. Why? Because it hit only at the end of the book. And then everything happens super fast. And it doesn’t really clear up the myth and gets just weird.
Let me tell you why. Because it’s an introduction to a long story. Only the first chapter. Which doesn’t sit really well when you are considering a full book. And I think that is exactly why I couldn’t rate this book higher. It focuses on the world, character and connection building at the expense of the story.

I loved this book !!
When I read the blurb I expected a run of the mill vampire novel or something similar. But the author refreshingly offers a real story. Mostly the book builds up Allie's character. It starts with her failing relationship, her sudden headaches and her dying grandfather. Nothing seems to be working out for her.
Strange things are happening. And she dsnt have any answers.
She is suddenly plunged in a different world and comes to realise a completely different side of the people she loved and trusted.
The narration is strong and I sincerely loved Flynn's writing style. The male characters also manage to hold their ground.
You will root for Allie. She takes everything in her strife and ploughs on. Their is emotion and drama involved with perfect harmony.
The only problem I think was that this book was too much focused on Allie's daily drama. I couldn't really see where the plot was leading to till the very end. The story moved at a slow pace.
The paranormal factor of this novel is introduced at the very last, neatly too late. By the end of the novel you would just have been barely introduced to Allie's powers and her involvement in the paranormal world. Barely.
I guess this is one way to make sure your reader eagerly awaits the sequel :P
Pick this book up for an interesting read.

I read this book in exchange for an honest review. Here goes, I'm not a fan of stories written in first person, that being said, the author did a very good job of keeping the I's to a minimum. The story was well paced and the world believable with rich descriptions. I grew up in NY and could relate to the city vibe and places she used, they were spot on.
Personally, I would not call this a paranormal romance, more like a paranormal with some romantic elements. The story is mostly about Allie’s life unraveling. Think worse case and amplify it a hundred times. The heroine is supposed to be thirty years old, but she reads much younger with all of her crying jags. Most of them were warranted, and could possibility be justified by the stresses in her life, but I personally felt it was over done. I would have like for her to get angry and maybe have an outburst or two, instead of breaking down and being indecisive, time and again. Over all, the plot was well thought out, with the exception of her ex. What happened to him, where did he go? Over all I would like to continue on Allie’s journey her, with the hopes of more and deeper romance with Ben.

I really wanted to liked this. I just didnt for various reasons. It got mixed reviews and those always make me nervous but I started to read it anyways. I pushed through it all. I love UF and this was a bit of a mess! The plots were too many. Most of the book was about her relationships in her life and maybe some of it was about the main plot. Just didnt sing for me. Allie was so freaking indecisive. Enough to bother my opinion about her. Allie's got a bit of a mess on her hands and I did feel for her. Her best friend wasn't always helpful and a bit pushy and annoying. The UF didnt come out until the last few chapters which irked me. I was really intrigued with Vampire Prince Sorrel. He was hardly in it but made quite an impression! I wish I liked it enough to continue. This could have been really great had it actually been UF throughout.

From the blurb, I thought this was just going to be another vampire novel, but I was pleasantly surprised when other atypical paranormals were added in. Since I feel bad for being the third person who rated this and not giving it 5 stars, the main reason I docked it one star was all the guys seemed to be in love with Allie and I admit I got a little eyeroll-y about it. But my typical rating on Goodreads tends to be around a 3 (liked it), so I liked this more than average. It's certainly better than the average self-published novel.

I will be buying the second book and thanks for alerting Vampires, Weres and Fae about your book giveaway day on Amazon, because I probably wouldn't have heard about/read this otherwise.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review…

I don’t know where to begin. I am in love with Allie and this story. What an amazing women! What an amazing story! If you are a “Twilight” fan you will love this book. I cannot wait for more!

Allie hasn’t had an easy life and CJ Flynn brings her to life. With each page turn you are given clues that there is more, but you never really find out what more there is till the end. Extremely well written and just a wonderful read. This book has it all, mystery, excitement, sex and violence. This book took me away to the wonders of CJ Flynn’s’ mind and I lost myself in the story.

I don’t want to give in spoilers, so I won’t. Can’t wait for book 2!

I really liked this book!

Most urban fantasy books skip rather quickly from real world into fantasy. But not The Watcher's Daughter. Throughout most of the book the main character Allie doesn't really believe in the paranormal. Some may not like the slow build up, but I found it refreshing. It does however leave you wanting at the end.. in a good way - not really a cliffhanger, but I can't wait to read what happens next. The book is well put together, the language fluid. All in all a positive reading experience.

Alexandrie Stuart is trying to cope with her beloved grandfather gradually losing touch with reality because of his dementia. She also suffers with terrible headaches that cause her to see flashes of colours around certain people. There are two men that are helping her. The best friend of her ex, and her grandfather's doctor. She also writes a blog about investigating the paranormal, not that she really believes in it. There is no such thing as Vampires and Witches, is there ????
This is a bit long winded. When it gets to the interesting bit it finishes.

The majority of the book is occupied with relationship breakup, grandfather being rapidly ravaged by Alzheimer's, main character's coping mechanisms. It then transitions into something of an urban fantasy. Hope the next book in the series shows marked improvement.
