Welsh-born Andy Frankham-Allen's passion for writing began with a love of Doctor Who. He's been writing since as far back as he can remember, and, although unsuccessful, he wrote a Doctor Who novel for BBC Books in 1996 after an accident caused him to be out of work for four months. Following that writing fell back into a hobby until 2001 when he began an ongoing fan-fiction series called Doctor Who: The Legacy, which carried on until 2006.

He has been writing professionally since 2004, through several official Doctor Who short stories, and since 2010 with horror shorts of Untreed Reads Publishing. March 2011 saw the release of his novel, 'Seeker', the first book in The Garden Saga, published in print by Hirst Publishing and in all digital formats by Untreed Reads.

This is a collection of the short stories from the first year of the Lethbridge-Stewart series.

The Enfolded Time by Andy Frankham-Allen: Exclusive to this collection, this is actually set much later than the Lethbridge-Stewart series, in 1990. It attempts to come up with a solution to the UNIT dating problem with has worried Doctor Who fans for many years. The solution is inelegant but it works and we get a nice little story.

The Creatures in the Cave by Rick Cross: At the end of the Doctor Who story The Abominable Snowmen Professor Travers sets off to pursue a 'real' yeti. This short story tells of what happens next and reveals that the Great Intelligence survived and sets up The Web of Fear.

The Ambush by Andy Frankham-Allen: A short story originally published in Doctor Who Magazine and then Lethbridge-Stewart: Top Secret Files which explains the moments before Lethbridge-Stewart's very first Doctor Who appearance in The Web of Fear. It's nothing hugely special but it is a nice little extension of a wonderful TV story.

Legacies by Norma Ashley: An alternate timeline story which imagines that Lethbridge-Stewart was killed in Lethbridge-Stewart: The Forgotten Son. I felt it needed some refining but I liked the concept. Weirdly the TARDIS is a main character here. It also has a neat line which ties the Lethbridge-Stewart family into New Earth which I thought was brilliant.

One Cold Step by Andy Frankham-Allen: Edward 'Professor' Travers and his daughter Anne Travers are on a boat visiting what appears to be the birth of a new island. But all is not as it seems! There's something strange going on which leads us nicely into Lethbridge-Stewart: The Schizoid Earth. There's also a great flashback scene where Anne visits her brother, Alun. I don't remember a brother ever being mentioned in The Web of Fear but it's an interesting addition, especially when Alun doesn't share the adventurous spirit of his father and sister. It's a nice idea that not everyone in the family ends up dealing with the mad stuff of the Whoniverse.

The Cult of the Grinning Man by Tom Dexter: Lethbridge-Stewart is called to sort out a cult. But what exactly is the Grinning Man and is he really an alien? I liked this story for putting Lethbridge-Stewart into what is essentially a non sci-fi story. Also, he drives an Aston Martin!

The Dogs of War by Andy Frankham-Allen: Lethbridge-Stewart meets Gilmore from Remembrance of the Daleks and the Counter-Measures audio series. It's a great meeting of like-minded characters and sees some great scenes like more yeti in the underground and Lethbridge-Stewart in Totter's Lane. I really liked the way it shows the military's view of the Doctor and how it ties together virtually every visit he made to the 20th century, and a few before.

The Fright Before Christmas by Tom Dexter: A great Christmas short story set within the Lethbridge-Stewart series. Lethbridge-Stewart is attending a Santa Claus party, much to his frustration. But when alien spheres start attacking civilians and head to Buckingham Palace it's up to Lethbridge-Stewart and his fellow Santa's to save the day. This is a genuinely exciting story and the threat feels very real. Of course the whole Santa costume thing is something of a gimmick but it is used well here, meaning Lethbridge-Stewart doesn't have his usual authority and is mistaken for a drunk reveller.

The last section of the book has previews of the three upcoming Lethbridge-Stewart novels but I will reserve judgement on them until I've read them!

This is a really enjoyable collection, especially when together as one book. It really succeeds in expanding Lethbridge-Stewart's world and filling in some of the important gaps between the TV stories and the novels as well as simply telling some great stories!

We've tackled these stories over at the Doctor Who podcast Traveling The Vortex, but having them all in one place and getting the "bonus" and brilliant The Enfolded Time by series editor Andy Frankham-Allen feels like a Christmas present you really wanted but didn't think anyone would actually get you. A great collection of Lethbridge-Stewart year one short stories and an interesting preview of this years slate.
