The Terran Union had sent Sarah Anders to Ardel to establish a trade agreement with the mineral-rich planet. But other, more unscrupulous humans are zeroing in on Ardel, as well, and only by learning to harness her dormant mental abilities from the FreeMasters of Ardel can Sarah hope to protect herself and Ardel.
I rather enjoyed this. It was a very well done science fiction tragedy. Suffered a bit from periodism, but a lot of the better space adventures do. Full marks for the creativity of the planet and its people, good plot, sad ending. A commerce thriller done right.
Fans of the Darkover will like this book. And I admit I did not see the ending. There is no way an author would do this today when every book has to be part of a series.
Sarah Anders is a Trade Attache from the Terran Union with a mission to make a trade agreement with a planet whose intelligent aliens have a low level of technology. But a vicious Earth corporation wants a trade agreement too and their representatives are willing to lie, kill, and deceive. Fortunately the natives have psychic powers and are able to teach them to Sarah.
The book is really interesting for the culture/society of the Ardellans. It is really sociological sf.
I probably read this ages ago, but had no memory of it.
