What an enjoyable translation of the Odyssey. Done in 1871, Bryant's free verse is rapid, exciting, and engaging. He avoids archaic phrasing and metrical styles. It continues to read nicely in 2018.

8.1/10 - I liked the Iliad a bit better since it was much more condensed and actively interesting. The Odyssey was unique in its themes and with everything that happened, but when reading it, the second half kinda drags on a bit. The start I just felt like I was waiting for odysseus the whole time. As a musical the i’d rate The Odyssey much better and enjoyed it a lot more. I loved the adventure part of the story and it’s amazing writing/ imagery, but that’s like 25% of the book. Main takeaway: Returning to something from the past needs caution and work to bring back to what it once was, with Agamemnon who got killed by is cheating lover and Odysseus returning to wretched suitors.
