Wolfpack 1 takes the Gallery Girls formula into the wilderness, and the result is a wonderfully imaginative collection of fantasy pin-up art.
The central idea is simple but remarkably effective: women who share an almost supernatural bond with the creatures of the natural world. Wolves, eagles, gorillas, lions, tigers, bears and plenty of other beasts populate these pages, sometimes as companions, sometimes as guardians, and sometimes as extensions of the women's own formidable presence.
What I particularly enjoyed is how much this theme allows the artists to play with different moods. Some pieces are sensual and playful, others feel genuinely wild and powerful, while others embrace the sheer fantasy of the concept. There is a pleasing sense that these women aren't merely posing alongside the animals—they belong in this world and, more importantly, the animals recognize them as their leaders.
The artist lineup is another reason to enjoy the book. Tomas Giorello, Boada, Daniel Pascarelli, Mike Hoffman, Del Rivero, Ruben Meriggi, Bachs, Quintabani, Maraschi, and many others contribute their own interpretations, giving the collection plenty of stylistic variety. As always with these SQP anthologies, discovering how different artists approach the same basic concept is part of the fun.
The covers are also excellent. Monte M. Moore's front cover immediately establishes the book's wild and sensual atmosphere, while Fastner & Larson's back cover provides a fitting companion piece.
Wolfpack 1 is ultimately a celebration of fantasy, femininity and the untamed side of nature. It's imaginative, occasionally wonderfully extravagant, and packed with the kind of artwork that makes these SQP collections so enjoyable to browse.
If you like fantasy pin-ups with a little more fang, claw and wildness, this is definitely a collection worth tracking down.
