Welcome! Join me, snooping into life's mysteries with fun, fiction, and food--California style!

Life is an extravaganza and so unpredictable! Figuring out how to hang tough and make the most of the wild ride is the challenge.

On my way to Oahu to join the rock musician and high school drop-out I married in Tijuana, I was nabbed by the police as a runaway. When the police let me go and the rock band broke up, my husband and I had to find another way to survive. Our next stop: Disney World where we trained to be chefs, courtesy of the Walt Disney World University.

A GED for my husband, and many more years of education eventually landed us in academia—with Ph.D.s from the University of Michigan we took professor jobs with U of M’s longstanding football rival, The Ohio State University.

Retired now from my role as a professor in social work and behavioral science, I have picked up a long-time interest in writing fiction. In my professional career I wrote and published widely as a scholar, with more than forty manuscripts of varying lengths on my vita. I also carried out hundreds of training, consulting and speaking engagements on a number of gloriously nerdy topics.

So what on earth does a research scientist have in common with a mystery writer? As avid fans of the mystery genre will tell you at the core of any good mystery is a passionate search for the truth. Discovering the truth involves finding and assembling pieces of complex puzzles in order to solve seemingly intractable problems—scientist and sleuth are cut from the same cloth!

Still married to the same sweet guy, I live with my husband in one of the seven desert resort cities in the Palm Springs area. In addition to reading and writing mysteries I enjoy painting, hiking, hanging out with my handsome husband and tending to my Siamese cats.

The Sonoran Desert is a beautiful setting to ponder life’s mysteries, by the surrounding mountains and the bountiful delights of the desert resort communities. I hope you enjoy reading the books in my three cozy mystery series: The Jessica Huntington Desert Cities Mystery Series, The Corsario Cove Cozy Mystery Series, and the Georgie Shaw Cozy Mystery Series. Cheers! Anna

This was my first taste of Anna Celeste Burke’s Georgie Shaw Cozy Mystery Series. I found most of the story, plot, budding romance, and character development intriguing. However, there were parts that just lost my interest completely.

For a fast, easy read, this book will deliver satisfactory entertainment. You might even develop a liking to the main character. However, I don't care for the amount of time and effort it takes to care for her demanding cat or all the intricate details of her employment, neither of which connected to the mystery directly. Who on earth would relish a morning alarm system of a loud Yeow zinging into one's eardrum?

In this installment, the main character, Georgie Shaw is framed for the murder of one of her co-workers, a mostly despised Mallory Marley-Marston. Someone was determined to set-up up Georgie for the murder, but between Georgie and her new love interest, Detective Jack Wheeler, can they discover who was really to blame?

Goodreads Review by Sandee: "The negative for me is the solving of the murder. Like the first book, it doesn't happen. A character sums up the solution at the end of the book. I prefer it when an author takes me along on the solving of the mysteries."

This is a clean and wholesome read with a H.E.A. regarding the capture of a murderer. However, the romance will no doubt continue throughout the rest of the series.

A well-written story with a few plot holes about a successful older woman working at a theme park, Catmmando Mountain. I sincerely dislike it when an author creates names that are difficult to pronounce. It stops the flow of the story every time I encounter the word as I try to figure out how to pronounce it. The story is cute with a bit of romance, interesting character interactions and a murder. There isn't much sleuthing in solving the murder though. At the end of the story one of the characters sums up what happened. I received the first 5 books at a great price though so I will be reading the next story.

A Nice Surprise

I've had this book in my library for a while and after opening and closing it during the last few months I decided to read it. Mainly because I purchased the newest book and I can't start a series anywhere but the beginning.

I found this not to be a book about crazies running around an amusement park and a woman taking unnecessary chances.
Instead I found a normal woman putting out fires or at least trying to in her work environment and trying to keep a level head.

I pegged the murderer from the start and then had second thoughts when another character caught my interest.
This really made me double guess myself but the motive eluded me till the end.

For me the characters were well written and quite real.
Humor is found in the characters of the amusement park. Big furry heads and princesses.

I'm so glad I find finally read this book and got past the cover.
If I hadn't not only would I have missed a fun story but great recipes.

I should never judge a book by its cover.
Now on to book two.

Murder at Catmmando Mountain by Anna Celeste Burke was an excellent start to this new cozy series. I really liked Georgie and Jack but I'm probably prejudice since these characters both mature adults rather than usual late 20's or early 30's protagonists found in most books currently being published. Ms. Burke wrote a story that flows easily and quickly. I found myself turning the pages so I could try to get ahead of them in solving this complex mystery. Unfortunately, I never did guess who was behind it all until the reveal. The dialogue feels genuine and the banter between Georgie and Jack made me laugh. I'm glad that I have the rest of the books in the series so I can continue traveling through Marvelous Marley world.

Let’s visit Marvelous Marley World’s Arcadia
theme park in Orange County, California
Georgina Shaw better known as Georgie is a
25 year employee. She is a mature, good looking
and smart addition to the Public Relation Division.
She is the Assistant Director. Prior to being
promoted Georgie was second in command of
their Food and Beverage Division until Maximillian,
the owner brought in his daughter, Mallory
Marley-Marston to head the department. Mallory
was not a very nice person. She was rude, conceited,
condescending and vicious to all the employees.
So when she ends up dead, no one is surprised.
But concern that Georgie’s scarf is with her body
raises questions. Did Georgie kill her? Who had it
in for Mallory? Who want to frame Georgie?
A real well plotted whodunnit with a large array of
characters to suspect.
Homicide Detective Jack Wheeler is on the case.
He and Georgie have an undeniable chemistry
going on between them. Will this lead to anything?
The characters are well defined, artfully created,
and very realistic. Even Georgie’s Siamese cat,
Miles adds to the story with his antics.
A good read with mature sleuths, good humor and
a touch of romance.

Georgina "Georgie" Shaw is currently working in the PR department at Marvelous Marley World. She transferred from the Food & Beverage division after being passed over for promotion in favor of the owner's daughter, Mallory Marley-Marston.

Things become very intense around Arcadia when Mallory is found dead and Georgie's blood-stained cashmere scarf is found nearby and the victim's cell phone is found in Georgie's coat pocket. To say that Mallory was not well liked is a gross understatement. Trying to find somebody who had something positive to say about her could prove nearly impossible.

Who hated Mallory enough to kill her? Why is Georgie being framed for the murder? Who stood to gain the most by eliminating both Mallory and Georgie?

I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. This cozy mystery is a "purr-fect" (no more cat puns I promise) way to end or start a day. After being framed for a murder at a theme park, Georgie Shaw and the handsome detective Jack are on the case. It was a wonderful story of misplaced passions, greed, and revenge and I look forward to getting to know Georgie more in the following books. As for this book, the plot twists had me guessing and second guessing the murderer all the way to the end! It's a mystery that would even make J.B. Fletcher proud!

I really enjoyed meeting and getting to know my newest favorite amateur sleuth Georgina (Georgie) Shaw, Director of PR for the cartoon cat Tom Catmmando at the Marvelous Marley Theme Park. Georgie is quite competent at her high-stress job, handling all the varied crises that can occur at such a venue. Now she's facing a real PR nightmare--the murder of a member of the Catmmando staff on park premises. Georgie is one of my favorite types of amateur sleuth -- she's an intelligent, articulate, competent mature woman (over 50) who has triumphed over everything life has thrown at her over the years both in her personal and professional lives. And despite the fact that the murderer tries to frame her for the crime, Georgie handles this ultimate crisis beautifully as well. Add just a hint of romance and you've got me eager to read the rest of the series.

An amusement park where the "D" word (Disney) is a dirty word, finds much more to be worried about than a mouse ear hat and balloon, when a body is found in one of their attraction areas. Then to make matters worse, the dead body is an employee of the park and she was not well likes, leaving it very likely it was someone that worked in the park who took her down. However the why isn't all that clear, but someone is trying to set up Ms. Shaw, a leader in the food service area of the park, who has had trouble with the murdered woman. Soon Ms. Shaw to be know on a first name bases by the lead detective. However there is another man 'pawing' for her desire, he really puts himself out there expecting her to fall for him, but the shine isn't so bright for him, in fact as dull as it can get. Putting the would be admire to flight the race is on to find who killed 'Corella' and perhaps a more lusty pursued personal interest .

Fun fast mystery, just right for a few days of lite reading. I didn't catch on to whodunit and that made it even better. I would read another of the authors work for sure.

I’ve read Anna Celeste Burke’s cozy mysteries before, and like her others, Murder at Catmmando Mountain was a real treat and a quick read. From page one, I felt taken back to times spent at the amusement park, so it was enjoyable to read about the mechanisms that keep a park running smoothly while keeping it pristine for visitors while making sure employees are performing their duties.
Another plus in this novel was lead character, Georgie’s feline named Miles after Miles Davis. His personality shows some cats can be a riot, and I wanted him to visit my house.
Murder at Catmmando Mountain quickly jumps into the murder, and since it does, I don’t think I’m inserting a spoiler to say it was a brutal attack on the daughter of Max Marley, owner of Marvelous Marley World Enterprises. Mallory was also known as Cruella de Vil, and not only was she vile to work associates, the thin waif collected men for the fun of it. Married, engaged, dating, or single, she didn’t care who was left in her wake as long as this spoiled only child got what she wanted. Hated by almost everyone, the suspects were plentiful, however lead character Georgina Shaw turned up with a solid alibi taken by a state camera and clocked at the same time as the murder. Items belonging to Georgie continued to show up, from her cashmere scarf at the murder scene to the alleged murder weapon in her coat pocket… I kept guessing one person after another, meanwhile, homicide detective Jack Wheeler, was narrowing the extremely long list. And falling in love with lead character Georgie. The feeling was mutual as flying pheromones had Georgie hearing “Snap, crackle, pop” every time the two were in close proximity.

I could visualize riding around the park on an employee bicycle, ringing the bell at visitors in harm’s way, while taking in the wonderful park atmosphere. I’m usually good at figuring out whodunit before the end of a read, but this wasn’t one of those times for me. Still, because there was some ‘blackout’ time mentioned by the accused murderer and full details were never divulged, I’m wondering if this saga/investigation will reopen and possibly point fingers at the person I suspected – or another employee or jealous wife. I hope this case is reopened, giving readers a chance to follow the budding romance of Georgie and Jack, no longer young things, but still passionately alive.

Hmmmmm. Did one of the many suited animal characters get away with the perfect crime, or did a jealous girlfriend go berserk, or is the one in custody the actual murderer?

Wow is all I have to say.

I am a seasoned fan of the writings of Ms. Burke but let me tell you…in my opinion she has hit it out of the park with this new series. Right from the beginning I was drawn into the world of Georgie Shaw. And I am happy to report that the twists and turns throughout this murder mystery kept me guessing as to who was framing Georgie for the murder that was committed!

I also enjoyed the slow sizzle that is developing between Georgie and detective Jack Wheeler. Seemed their first “date” was exactly what one would hope for (okay…I would hope for)….good food, great music and a hunky guy across the table.

"Two hours later, we were seated at Blue Pacific with a view overlooking the ocean and an open bottle of wine. A jazz quartet played Coltrane, the lighting low and romantic, and there I sat with a homicide detective."

The flirting between Georgie and Jack was great:

”You’re on my most wanted list, Georgie, but it has nothing to do with this case”. “Oh stop it, Jack, you’re embarrassing me.” I blushed for the second time today. “Geez, don’t tell me you don’t like flirting any better than compliments.” “I like it Jack. I haven’t had much practice lately with either.”

The meal time writing certainly tickled my tastebuds!

“The delicious food didn’t just satisfy my hunger; it comforted my restless spirit.”

As a cat owner….I could totally relate to and loved Miles (Georgie’s cat):

”Satisfied that I was okay, Miles went into action. In a burst of energy, he did a dismount, nailed the landing, and launched into his “crazy cat” routine with his tail kinked. Miles bolted out of the kitchen, roared like a mini-lion, then leaped up and over the back of the couch, ran under the coffee table, and plopped back down at my feet, almost before I could blink. This routine was in celebration of my homecoming. One he performed nightly, it always made me laugh.”

There is a somewhat large cast of characters to cycle through to find the actual killer or killers. I enjoyed the location of the murder, one that I personally have not encountered in previously read cozy mysteries. The writing was easy to read and kept me engaged throughout.

I eagerly anticipate the second (and third) book in this series, which I am going to rush out and read! Thank you Anna Celeste Burke for creating this latest series.

*I would like to thank the author for supplying a free copy of this title in exchange for an honest review*

I nearly gave up on this in the first few pages, and what an error that would have been. I am a novice to #cozymysteries that genre of crime/mystery stories which exclude violence and graphic gory details. Cozy mysteries are about character and quick-moving plot rather than bangs and flashes. Anna Celeste Burke is an American writer specializing in the genre. So, why did I almost stop reading ‘Murder at Catmmando Mountain’? It might be a journalist’s thing, but I don’t like to be told too much information upfront. But once I got past the bit about who Georgie Shaw is - she’s the narrator with a smart voice who works in PR at a tourist attraction, Marvellous Marley World, based on the cartoon characters of tycoon Max Marley – the action starts in chapter two. Then the fun starts.
Early one morning, a body is found. Not just any body, a dead body. The body of Mallory Marley, obnoxious daughter of Max Marley. Lying next to the body, and dipped in Mallory’s blood, is Georgie’s scarf. Georgie, who recently moved to the PR department from Food and Beverage rather than take retirement, is forced to consider her life in a new light. Is one of her colleagues trying to frame her? Homicide detective Jack Wheeler, who reminds Georgie of James Garner in 'The Rockford Files' [watch out for the American detective references], makes being a suspect easier for Georgie to deal with, though she does have an alibi as the transponder in her car was clocked by a state police camera at the time of the crime. But other clues linking Georgie to the crime continue to appear.
All the time I was reading this book, it reminded me of the comedies of Carl Hiasson, the Florida journalist turned novelist who wrote the hilarious ‘Lucky You’, ‘Skinny Dip’, ‘Native Tongue’ and ‘Basket Case’. I liked Georgie from the beginning, and her Siamese cat Miles. This is comfort reading, easy, it was fun eliminating the suspects one-by-one and choosing the wrong one. This is a read-in-one-sitting novella, 178 pages, and I would have liked it to be longer. The last chapter is a summary of how the case is solved, and it would have been more dynamic to read the action.

Remind me to NEVER take a job at an Amusement Park! I know that Georgie Shaw wishes that she never gave up her job in the Food and Beverage Division. It seems as if many of the workers at Catmmando Mountain are half-baked and half-baked is still plenty dangerous! It’s a good thing that Georgie has Miles to keep her on task – at least at home. I guess that even when you have a lot, there’s always ‘more.’ The twists and turns in this book are eye opening. Be prepared to enjoy the roller coaster ride!

Murder at Catmmando Mountain is the first novella in Anna Celeste Burke’s Georgie Shaw Cozy Mystery Series. Ms. Burke has written a well thought out and interesting mystery, with a good story line and excellent character development. The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick, easy read. The setting is original and the characters are relatable. I was engaged from the beginning of the book and the twists and turns had me guessing until the final reveal. This is a clean cozy mystery featuring no gratuitous sex, violence, or foul language. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well-crafted cozy mystery.

Georgina “Georgie” Shaw is an attractive and intelligent middle-aged woman who adores Miles, her Siamese cat, and loves her job as Assistant Director in the PR Division of Marvelous Marley World’s Arcadia theme park in Orange County, California. She’s been with the company for 25 years and prior to her current position, was second in command of the Food and Beverage Division. When the brutally stabbed body of Mallory Marley-Marston, daughter of the owner, Maximillian Marley, is discovered at Catmmando Mountain at with Georgie’s scarf nearby, she becomes one of many suspects. Mallory was viewed as a nasty, unhappy woman who had made more enemies than friends at work and had even had taken a position Georgie had coveted in the Food and Beverage Division. Homicide Detective Jack Wheeler is assigned to the investigation and once he confirms her alibi, quickly removes Georgie from the suspect list but believes someone is trying to make her appear guilty. There is a mutual attraction between Jack and Georgie, and they work together to figure out who is responsible.

Workmanlike, but all too easy a mystery and extraneous detail

This is a reasonable effort. Decent writing, mostly obvious plot, knee-jerk insta-romance between likeable leads.

Largest issues for me:
why did the author keep shifting back and forth in her description of the male lead - was he smug or charming? She couldn't decide and several times described his smile or look both ways in consecutive sentences. Maybe it was a clumsy attempt to add uncertainty to the immediate attraction between them?

Parts of the world-building - we heard far too much about the minutia of the Park and how it was run, complete with excerpts from the Employee Handbook and employee counselling sessions. If any of that info had been required for the mystery, I wouldn't have minded. As it wasn't, including it made Georgie, the female lead, seem overly wrapped up in her work and more than a bit bot-programmed.

Georgie was portrayed in ways that made her too stereotypical cat lady. Did we really need paragraphs in several different chapters that detailed how her cat ran her life, complete with where he slept, his wakeup routine, how he played and the sounds he made? I like cats too, but the author spent too much time on Georgie's relationship with the cat and too little on making the mystery interesting.

[ I received this book free from the author requesting an honest review . I was not compensated in any way. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising]

“Take greed, add envy and desperation and , voila, you've created a toxic cocktail."

Georgina(Georgie) Shaw, second in command of the PR department at Marvelous Marley World in in the thick of it. Not only has she got a public relations nightmare among the staff, but now there's a body up at Catmmando Mountain....all this, and it was Valentine's Day too. And it's up to Georgie to "fix" the problem, especially since it looks like she's on the short list of suspects according to Detective Jack Wheeler, who has more on his mind than the murder.

At the speed a downward turn on a roller coaster, the suspects revolve on and off the list of people who abbhored Mallory Marley-Marston, the owner's daughter. Whether or not she wanted to, Georgie is involved in all the shenanigans as well as the flirtatious nature of a certain detective who even gets the approval of Georgie's cat Miles. This satisfying cosy short comes with scrumpitiously dedcedant recipes and overall is highly recommended by this reviewer. Clear your calendar because it's hard to put down once you start.

Murder at One of the Happiest Places in Earth?

Anna Celeste Burke was the first author to introduce me to the wonderful world of book clubs in Facebook! I really love her writing style! She makes her books so much fun to read, " Murder at Catmmando Mountain" is no exception!

I began reading "The Georgia Shaw Mysteries, because I purchased the newest book first. I couldn't begin with the newest book first, so I purchased the rest, and started from the beginning because I need to learn more about the characters and the setting first! I was not disappointed!

When I began reading this book, I could not help but thinking back to my younger, carefree days if working at a similar theme park, and the happiness it brought me, just like it did to Georgia Shaw! But to have to see the carnage that one person brought upon another, would have been devastating! I can't imagine coming upon a scene like that!

I, !like so many others, thought I had an idea who the murderer was, but I was surprised by the truth! That sleazy costumed character had me fooled, even though he had a hand in it all!

I recommend " Murder at Catmmando Mountain " to anyone who loves murder, a cozy mystery, and a budding romance all wrapped into one! I cannot wait to move on to book #2!

Thanks Anna Celeste! You never disappoint this reader ☺

Pretty good mystery

I received this book free from one of the book sites. I do not remember which one! This is my honest and voluntary review.
I enjoyed this book. The "cast of characters " is lively. The fact that the main characters are older & attracted to each other added a smile to my face. Recommended

Georgie Shaw works in the public relations department of Arcadia, a large theme park in Southern California. The park is owned by Maximillian Marley, creator of The Furry Caped Avenger, Catmmando Tom, the famous cartoon cat. She loves her job until she is confronted by the brutal death of her owner's daughter, her old boss in the Food and Beverage Division of the company. A public relations nightmare is nothing compared to her being set up as the prime suspect. When the lead detective clears her immediately and then asks her out for dinner, she is caught by surprise. But with her alibi firm she goes for the dinner and agrees to help him with the case, since she has an inside track at work. This was a page turner. I read it straight thru and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the adventure. Georgie and Detective Jack Wheeler are in their 40's and I liked their maturity. A Public Relations job in an amusement park is a different background and setting from most cozies and proved to be quite fun and entertaining. This new series gives us an adventure with great characters and a deftly plotted mystery.

I received this book from the author. This is my honest opinion and fair review.
