Behind the Uniform

**Please Note: The stories in this anthology will *not* be released individually.

Uniformed careers are a matter of choice and of sacrifice – military, fire, police, forest service, etc. – and the people who choose these careers are often dedicated to a fault. But sometimes dedication can come with a hefty price. Behind the Uniform illustrates the physical or emotional sacrifice and the hard choices that sometimes come with such all-consuming dedication.

A Wolf in Cop's Clothing by Toni Griffin
Marcus Holland loves his job as a small town cop and his life with his pack. When his mate, Brian, kissed him goodbye that morning and remarked, "This is Leyburn. What trouble could I possibly find?" Marcus really hoped never to find out. He had no idea how much those words would come back to haunt him as he goes about his duties.

It's the Hat by Jon Keys
Forest ranger Matt Keller’s frustrations mount as he tries to bust a poaching ring in a Michigan national forest and now he’s discovered that Kyle, the gorgeous waiter he desperately wants to ask out, has an ex-boyfriend hanging around. The ex is bad news, Kyle says it’s complicated, and Matt’s not sure which way to jump. Just as Matt’s puzzling things out with Kyle, his pursuit of the poachers takes a dangerous turn and he could risk losing all the pieces he’s fought so hard to juggle.

The Head Shed by Gregory L. Norris
Milo Hanover is proud to manage a Head Shed. He and the sex workers he supervises are vital to the morale and sanity of troops fighting a ruthless alien invader. When Colonel Dunnegin arrives at the Shed, though, it isn’t for the usual reason. He reveals that humanity needs Milo for the secrets carried in his genetic code rather than his enthusiastic service. In the desperate race to get Milo to the front, he battles his own heart even as he’s thrust into the battleground for humanity’s survival.

✫¸.•°*˜”*°.✫Who doesn't love a man in uniform?...✫.°*”˜*°•.¸✫

I barely read the synopsis, I just knew that one of the books featured Toni Griffin and would involve the first characters from her Holland Brothers Series and that was it for me.

In book one, 4 stars for Wolf in Cops Clothing, where Toni Griffin reintroduces us to Brian and his cop mate Marcus. The men are proud parents of twin boys and are just as in love as when their book ended. The main story focuses on Brian's involvement in a robbery where his husband comes to his rescue. Brian is injured, and it just tied the bound they have. Later, the men re-enact cops and robbers in a steamy make out session. Gotta love these boys.

Book two, features 4 stars for Jon Keys' It's the Hat. Having never read from this author before, I was impressed as the story line, though it seemed fast paced at times, it flowed in all the right places.
Six years of being a ranger was gratifying to Matt. Ending his days with his crush Kyle would be even better if he could get it together and just ask the cute blonde out. But there were problems of poachers in his territory that was becoming a nuisance and Kyle's ex, Ash who was at the center of it all. There was action and suspense to get me going; and a kidnapping, gun fight and plenty loving to go around. In the end, Matt got his poacher and his man.

Book three left me with a weird taste in my mouth, pun intended and made me say, "hmm?" I do not ever recall reading Gregory L. Norris, but if I had, this story would have made me remember. The Head Shed is not for the faint of heart and features a story line I have never read before, EVER. It involved Aliens, and suckers and survival of the fittest. I can personally say, this will stay with me for a long, long while. You have to read to understand, but I will leave you with this piece of information: Suckers keep those soldiers at the front lines happy and sane... Freddy MacKay, yeah, not getting over THAT one, LOL.

ANTHOLOGY REVIEW:

This was a great little collection of stories by authors both familiar and new. The variety in characters and situations was wonderful and the various men in uniform were certainly showcased well in each of the stories which made for a diverse and entertaining read. If you can’t resist a man in uniform, I’d recommend checking this book out; there’s a little something for everyone and its all good!

Oh I just adored this! Fans of the Holland Brother’s Series are sure to recognize the characters in this story and that was one of the reasons I was so eager to pick it up. For me, this story was just a total bonus for the rest of the series and I was so excited to reconnect with the characters and world I’d come to love reading about in the previous books. The author managed to pack a well rounded story in a small package that didn’t leave me feeling rushed or disappointed by the end. While you can read the story and certainly understand what’s going on, you’ll get more out of it if you’re already familiar with the characters and I recommend reading the series anyway because I enjoyed every bit of it. Great way to start the book, I loved it! 4.5*

It’s the Hat by Jon Keys: Reviewed by Michele

This story is about Matt Keller, a forest ranger, who tries to single handedly take down a poaching ring in the Michigan national forest. Matt is a sweet guy who lives a very uncomplicated life. He enjoys his job, and at the end of his shift a few time a week he enjoys going into town to a certain diner, to ogle a certain waiter. Well to his frustration this waiter, Kyle, has an ex-boyfriend that spells bad-boy bad news. Matt has been dying to ask Kyle out but just never worked up the nerve. Funny thing is Kyle has been covertly flirting with Matt for some time also hoping he would notice without being too obvious.
Well after Matt witnesses an exchange between Kyle and his ex, now he’s just thinking he missed his chance. Things start becoming very dangerous with Matt’s job and the poachers. Just as things begin to take a turn in the direction Matt has been hoping for another revelation unfolds that could change his future. This story was short and sweet. There are questions I could ask but it would draw out the details of the story.
I give it 3 stars.

The Head Shed by Gregory L. Norris: Reviewed by Sarina

This was a really interesting finish to the anthology. I found the premise of the story really interesting and without going into a massive amount of detail the author still managed to convey the horror and overwhelming problem the Grunk’s represented. I kind of liked how the Head Shed operated, providing a service that was needed while still providing for the safety of the workers and the fact that it was all focused on oral rather than penetrative sex was something different. I enjoyed the characters and the setting as well, but the insta love factor in this one wasn’t believable in the slightest for me. Also, there seemed to be some transitioning issues due to the size of the story and the author’s need to complete it without writing a full on novel. I did like this one though and while I would’ve liked a little more I wasn’t disappointed in the story as a whole. I would’ve liked to have seen Milo and Joe get their official happy ending, however. 3.5*

7 novellas including a couple shorts make this a fun, quick series. Each book has enough story to get into the characters and they carry through the other stories so you get to know them all and see their stories continue to develop.

Read the one by Toni Griffith to wrap up the Holland Brothers series :-)

I had only read books by one of the three authors in this anthology before this, but I will be looking to read more by these authors in the future.

A Wolf in Cop's Clothing by Toni Griffin was a 4 star read. I think it would be more enjoyable if you've read Toni's Holland Brother series. That being said, this is a fun look at a day in the life of Brian and Marcus as well as their two sons. Brian is just going to run an errand when trouble finds him. Marcus just wants a quiet day at work only to find himself dealing with a robber who has his mate hostage. Reading this story made me want to go back and reread the Holland Brother series again.

It's the Hat by Jon Keys was 4.25 stars. This story is a contemporary about a forest ranger named Matt who has a crush on Kyle, a waiter at one of his favorite restaurants. Matt is a sweetheart who loves his job and would really like to catch the poacher(s) that have been killing deer, preferably without anyone getting hurt. Matt tends to get flustered around Kyle and never makes a move. Finally, Kyle takes things into hand so they can spend time together. Watching these two dance around each other at first was sweet and when they realize the interest is mutual, it gets hot quickly. I liked this story so much that I will be looking to read more books by Jon Keys in the future.

The Head Shed by Gregory L. Norris was 3.5 stars. It is a fast paced scifi story with ruthless alien invaders and the humans trying to survive and win the war. Milo manages and works in a Head Shed where soldiers can come to relieve their sexual tension during the war. Milo is used to how things work when soldiers come in until a new colonel shows up looking specifically for Milo. Suddenly, Milo and the colonel make a connection beyond the fact that the colonel needs Milo and his genetics to finally end the alien invasion. They fall in love quickly while managing to save the world. Overall, it was an interesting read.

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Review:
This was a nice collection of stories, each with their own set characters. Even with a slightly common theme the stories were different and all had very different feels to them.

A Wolf in Cop’s Clothing
I have to admit this story is the main reason I wanted to read this anthology. I have enjoyed the Holland brothers’ form the beginning. This story focuses on Marcus and Brian, the couple from the first Holland Brothers books. We were able to see both characters’ points of view and how protective and caring they both are of their children and each other. It was great to see these characters again and how strong their relationship still is.

It’s the Hat
This is a classic story of two people being attracted to each other, but not knowing for sure the other wants them. We are able to see both characters’ points of view which helps us to get connected to these characters. In this story Matt has been lusting after Kyle for months, but doesn’t feel worthy to act on his attraction. Kyle finally has to take the last step for them to see how good they could be together. I love the glimpse forward at the end.

The Head Shed
This story is told from Milo’s point of view and has a dystopian setting. Milo and Joe have been hardened by war, but know what life was like before. Milo gets pulled from his place at the Head Shed because his genetics should be able to help fight against the invaders. When they are captured he puts himself in harm’s way to save humankind and the man he loves. This is the only story I had a bit of a hard time with, it kind of just picked up in the middle of this war and even though the author did some background explaining I just didn’t feel connected to these characters or the story.

The cover art by Freddy MacKay is nice, but it depicts firemen of which there are none in these stories.

3 diverse stories about a man in uniform.

A Wolf in Cop's Clothing by Toni Griffin
3 stars - While this was a cute short story about saving your mate, I was confused on so many parts. About halfway through I realized that this must be a characters from another series because I was given name after name and expected to know who was who. And it took until about 3/4 of the way through before I realized the setting was Australia. The intimate scene at the end was excellent and made up for a lot of the story's short comings.

It's the Hat by Jon Keys
4 stars - All the right bits for a perfect short story. The focus remained on the main characters and the mystery element was well done.

The Head Shed by Gregory L. Norris
4.5 stars - The imagery with words here in this story was spectacular. The use of emotional dialogue---so much said with so few words---took my breath away. My only disappointment was the insta-love component. I'm a little bias, went to college in Rhode Island and lived in New England for several years. It was interesting to imagine Providence on the front lines of a war. Thank you for an amazing tale of love amid desolation.

Enjoyed these three short stories. Well written. All the characters touched my heart. Marcus, a cop, and his partner Brian, are wolf shifters with twins. There connection is heart warming especially when they come up against a robber. HOT and intense. The second story has Matt, a forest ranger, and Kyle, a waiter, have denied their connection until an ex and poacher that Matt has been after come into the picture. Their encounter is HOT and explosive. Loved it. The third story deals with a man, Milo. who is in charge of the The Head Shed, which gives soldiers sexual relief within the military. Colonel Joseph Reece Dunnegin, Joe, comes to Milo as a special request and finding out he knows that Milo is special. The Aliens, the Grunks, had invaded seven years ago and have tried to mate with the humans. Milo was one who they tried to mate with, but it had only changed his DNA which can destroy the aliens. Joe knows this. The two come together emotionally, sexually, and within a mission. The goal is to destroy the aliens. Great story. Don't miss any of these. All MM romance/Love.

The first two stories were my favourites, but the last one was interesting in a different way.
A Wolf in Cop’s Clothing by Toni Griffin
Marcus is a wolf shifter cop in a small town. On an ordinary day his husband, Brian, takes their twin sons on a shopping trip. What could possibly go wrong?
I loved this story and now have to go see if I can find more stories with these characters.
It’s the Hat by Jon Keys
Matt, a forest ranger, has had a crush on Kyle, a waiter at his favourite pub, for months. When they finally go on a date and start getting to know each other, things heat up.
These two are lovable and the story has just enough happening to keep the reader entertained.
The Head Shed by Gregory L. Norris
This was an interesting story set in an America which has been invaded by aliens. It was a well written tale. I don’t have a foot fetish, so that part put me off a bit.

Only one story was read from this anthology: A Wolf in Cop's Clothing by Toni Griffin

Another cute catchup story since Valentines. This time the full focus is on Marcus and Brian and their boys. Just another day in the life and adventure of a wolf shifter... or not. Trip to the grocery store turns into a robbery that Marcus has to protect Brian from. And then later a run and some naughty cop fantasy sexy times..

To be honest I only bought this series for Toni Griffin's story since I loved her Holland Brothers series. I plan to read the other stories in the book but first I will check out the other authors to make sure they are not part of a series also. I am a purest in the fact that I always read series in order no matter what.
