Devon Macleod awoke staring at the swaying pines rising into the sky above him. He had been shot, his outfit stolen and he didn’t know why. When the tough old widow Abby Chaney found him half-dead on her Bitter Grass ranch and got him home, she swung Macleod’s future into an unexpected direction. He learned that Abby and her daughter Katy were hanging on by threads to their ranch in the Strawberry Mountains. They were pressed from the south by tyrant Charles Sampson, who wanted their rich summer pastures, and from the north by timber man Egert Taylor, who wanted the Bitter Grass timber, both of whom were willing to kill the women to get it. Never one to back down from a fight or forget a favor done him, Macleod wanted two to find those who had bushwhacked him and get his outfit back, and repay the Chaneys for saving his life. None of them knew how much their worlds were about to change the day Macleod buckled on his gun and stepped into the Bitter Grass fight – least of all Devon Macleod. Formerly titled "Bitter Grass", published by Bottom of the Hill Publishing. The rewritten and enhanced novel is now published by Double Diamond Books under the title "MACLEOD".
I have been a writer of adventure novels of the Old West. I have now branched out to writing contemporary crime novels with a suspense/mystery base. What I feel makes these unique is that they are set in the modern West and Alaska, as opposed to exotic world and big city settings. They involve average people and local law enforcement agencies.
My writing influence comes from my ancestral roots. Mountain men, voyageurs, pioneers, and explorers make up the branches of my family tree. My paternal grandfather was Blackfoot Indian from Montana. My maternal grandfather was a Minnesota lumberjack, both men were born in the 1800’s.
As a lifelong outdoorsman I have inherited that pioneer blood and followed in the footsteps of both my families. I have experienced life in the Alaska bush, as well as the wilderness of the Rocky and Cascade Mountains, as a working cowboy, guide, horsepacker, hunter, and trapper. I also spent several years as a Colorado Deputy Sheriff. This experience in the law enforcement field allows me an intimate insight to the system that I weave into my new crime genre stories. I incorporate all of my experiences into my stories to ingrain them with authenticity and draw the reader into the story by their realism and a personal knowledge of the people and lifestyle involved.
I have near to 500 fiction and non-fiction works published. Included are: 19 novels and short story collections, 70 short stories, and inclusion in 18 anthologies. I am the first 3 time winner of the Will Rogers Medallion Award, in 2008 for Best Western Fiction, and again in 2013 for Best Western Humor, and 2014 for Best Western Novel. Nine of my short stories have earned Reader’s Choice Awards.
Mostly "tell" without much "show," this book nonetheless rolls smoothly are an even pace and engages the reader. The author uses a third person omnicient narrative and bobbles a few small details that only the grammar police, equestrian experts, and avid history buffs would likely notice. Overall, this is an engaging story written in an old-fashioned manner and meant to be read at a leisurely pace. Zane Grey would approve.
MACLEOD was a very likeable character. AlL the characters in the story were well rounded and very believable. They were the kind of people that I'd like to just sit down and visit for a while. This was a pure pleasure to read this story, not a bit of wasted time to read it. BRAVO!!!BRAVO 👏👏
It is always so much fun to read a book that grabs you from the very first word! When you discover that lunch and supper no longer occurred to you, as you turned the pages of a book you began at breakfast, it has to be a treasure! MACLEOD, written by Dave P. Fischer, is one of those gems you won't forget!
Haven't read a western in a while and this was a great reintroduction. It was nice to be back in the land where men and women live by their code and stand up for what's right in a world where bullies try to take what they want by force.
This is a great book!!!! Really fast paced action and very well developed characters. I could have read this book non stop it was so good. Can't wait to read the sequel!!!!!
This is the first Oregon story I have read, and what a story, with great action and a lovely romance. The book is well-written and difficult to put down.
A true cowboy story. The in-depth description of a range rider was mesmerizing. For the two days I shared this adventure as I " rode for the brand". Mister Fisher is a master story teller.
The pull on a life to go leads to life changing circumstances
Interesting story of providence, old hates, and new friends. I enjoyed MacLeod. It had a good mix of excitement, growth, and character. Highly recommended for all readers.
Here's a great story, well written and very exciting. It is a fast-paced story that is easy to read and understand. When you see what this book is about, you will want to 'dive right in', and you will not be disappointed.
My first time with this writer and overall impressed. Good plot, reasonably fleshed out characters and some romance to boot. Looking forward to the sequel.
This is the first book of Dave P. Fisher that I have read; however, it will not be the last. This is a good story and a must read by every western fan.
This a great story. Good characters and lots of adventure, plots, romance and everything else to make it a good book. Will definitely read more from this author
Darvon MacLeod ethnic background consisted of Scottish and French Acadian was raised to HATE the British because of the persecution the British inflected upon his people. His family emigrated to America because of this persecution and settled in Kentucky. Darvon hated the life of a farmer, when reached the age of eighteen he told his parents that he wanted to see the rest of the west. Of course, the parents were upset, but this was expected in the west, the kids didn't stay home. And the wild untamed lawless countryside there was a possibility that they might never see that son again. Who knows what path he'll take, might be killed by bushwackers, Indains or maybe die from a gunshot wound. One never knows..MacLeod the cowboy enjoyed his life, he was free to go where he wanted and he did. Met some people who saved his life, he returned that favor by helping them with their ranch. Men no matter what the times, will always try to manipulate or use deadly force to bully women out of something that belongs to them. A clean western with lots of action and surprises. And there's a follow-up of MacLeod's adventures.. You'll enjoy reading and experiencing his trek to Oregon or whatever paths west he decides to take,,, we're riding with him..
