Upsetting the Table: Women Mentoring Women

Rate this book
After a successful and trail-blazing career in the technology sector, Robbie Hardy looked around and wondered, what happened to all the women? The boardrooms were a boy's club, and the ranks of up-and-coming executives had few women as well. Robbie decided she needed to get to the bottom of this trend.

What followed was an exploration into the meaning of mentorship, the power of the "girl's club" and the mission to nurture young managers into successful executives. She has created Lesson's Earned, the women's mentorship club that pairs successful executives with up-and-coming talent. She has helped countless women tackle the challenges in their career. In Upsetting the Table, she now creates a powerful fable for women to see how hard-earned lessons can be applied in their lives and their careers.

Why do women make 77 cents for every dollar a man makes? How can we address this inequality? Robbie Hardy tackles this and many other women-in-the-workplace questions in her ground-breaking book "Upsetting the Table."

Easy to read "business fable" that uses the story of a successful, about to retire woman agreeing to mentor a shy, new to her career young professional. The story weaves in a lot of the challenges that women face in the workplace throughout their careers, with solid tips for addressing those challenges. How to handle sexual harassment, workplace conflict, ask for a raise and exit gracefully are all situations that are covered.

It was interesting to see the thought process of both the mentor and the mentee. Although the book will primarily be helpful to young women getting started in the workplace, it is also useful for women who would like to become mentors. The story was easy to relate to, while pointing out where gender bias can be difficult to see otherwise.
