I read the first book and I decided to read the second. I did not like the second one nearly as much. This book was confusing and hard to follow. The constant going back in time and everyone now knowing what they were doing or who they were supposed to be with was hard to follow. I was also disappointed that there wasn't more of a plot line involving Aimee and Shane (they are my favorite two characters).
However, the book still left me with a lot of unanswered questions so I think that I will buy the next book, just to see if Aimee and Shane finally get together.

In this book we learn of Ari, a young early, 18 years old who didn't have the best up-bringing in life.

Her mum died, just a little after she was born, her uncle abandoned her to an orphanage, where all sorts of horrible crimes got committed by the nuns & Father there. Bane was tragic. The abuse and pain the kids suffered by the people is at it's height. I felt the way the author portrayed the street kids and abuse and the orphanage was done very brilliantly, without having to go into too much detail.
Lydia finds Air on the streets and take her under her wing at the big mansion, she introduces Ari to all the people including Aimee, and she is introduced to Lucas.

At that point in the story we aren't quite sure what being Air or Lucas are. We do know that Ari is something "Different".

Ari then begins on her adventure to learn Who she is...What she is....& What her abilities are....

Also in this we see more of the Aimee, Shane & Alek's love triangle. You have Alek's and its clear he loves Aimee dearly and would always protect her, but then you have Shane (Who I Love) who is just a big sweetheart and I found myself thinking "which would I choose?" And I honestly don't know!

I wonder what we find in the third installment "Hyde" (I'm currently reading this one guys)

Dear sweet baby Jesus this was awful! I was not a real believer in the Devil's Roses book one; however, I believe in giving a series at least two books before totally deciding to give up on it. Unfortunatly, "Bane" was just plain awful. The characterizations were rushed, the story line was convoluted and to put it simply it was a 'hot mess.'

I purchased books 1-3 at the same time. However, after reading this book, I immediately returned book 3 without reading it. Initially when I began reading "Bane" I was confused trying to figure out what it had to do with book one. Then, when Aimee's character was reintroduced I began gaining some understanding. This story is about Ari a girl who lived in New Mexico with her Uncle who she adored. He adopted her as a baby when her mother died and asked him to protect her. She is happy and well adjusted until she begins getting sick and her hands begin burning. With her touch, she is able to change the course or people's lives including her Uncle's and that of her own.

After changing her live, Ari finds herself on the street as a druggie, prostitute, and abused teen. She is rescued and taken into the home of a witch named, Lydia. Lydia is loving and kind and with the help of her witch ghost nurse Ari back to health. Also living at Lydia's home is a band of misfit teens including shapeshifters, vampries and various other undead. One of the problems I had with this book is that within a few pages, Ari is suddenly in love with a shapeshifter Lucas. It was hard developing any real emotional attachment for their relationship because it was built basically on a few looks.

Next, let's talk about the convoluted plot. It was simply all over the place. Ari has the memories of two different Ari's, the first well adjusted one and the second abused one. Then, in the story there are more Ari's. Ms. Brown uses sexual and drug abuse like it is nothing more than a garnish on a tray of appetizers (far less appealing). I was disgusted because it really did not add anything meaningful to the plot.

I will admit that I was not a fan of how Brown mocks the bible and religion and it is admittedly because I am a Christian. I just found all of the postering and references to fallen angels to be less than idealic and more satanic. In short, I hated this book. Sorry, but the truth is the truth. Read it for yourself and decide. However, I have had enough of the roses. Life is too short to read bad books.

The best way to say it.. I love this book series!!!
I am an avid book reader, having read 34 books so far this year. Bane is one of the best follow up’s I have ever read. It has more action, romance, and characters than the first book. I felt Cursed was slightly predictable, but had no clue where this book was going from chapter to chapter. I read it in one, six hour sitting.

The story begins in the desert, with the introduction of Ari. She’s a plain teenage girl, working at her uncle’s restaurant. Plain didn’t last for long. Ari went out for a run and it ended with her world being split, beyond belief. From that day on, she is plagued with struggles. Luckily she is adopted into a family that can help her learn what has happened. That’s where she meets Aimee, Lucas, and several new friends, and is trained to be a Devil’s Rose. But her problems only begin there; it seems that Ari’s situation worsens when she uses her new powers.

In the meantime, Aimee has to figure out who she loves. The heartbreaking decision plagues her over and over again. She has to shove her personal life aside, to find Ari; who had left because she didn’t want to cause her new family any more pain. When Aimee finds Ari, it seems that the dark side had found her first.

Epic battles, betrayal, love, friendship.. this book has everything!

Tara Brown undoubtably has one of the most creative minds I've ever seen. The paranormal world she creates is like none other, where the Devil is actually a good girl and Jekyll and Hyde make cameo appearances! After reading Cursed, I expected Bane to pick up with Aimee, right where she left off. Instead, we are introduced to Ari, as she undergoes a change into a super being and is indoctrinated into The Roses. As we learn about Ari, we also get a better understanding of this secret organization and its purpose, where Ari fits into the story and how her character relates with Aimee and the other characters from Cursed. We're introduced to new characters with neat super powers that constantly re-write the story and keep you on your toes. This is not one of those books where you can skim through the pages, this series requires your attention as it is complicated, with varying and intertwined story lines that are constantly developing and changing. Bane spans a lot of territory, but it's such a fascinating world that Tara has developed- I can't wait to see where else this story goes. Yes, there are a lot of grammatical errors in this version, which the author is aware of, but if you can get past them its really a fascinating story.

How do I start this review? Hmm...I really, really liked it!! I loved how Ari was introduced. And I love her power! It's unique and I've never seen it done in any other books I've read thus far. I love how you see things through Ari and Aimee in this install.
Ari has this unique gift that the dark side wants to destroy. She meets the most wonderful mother figure named Lydia, a ghost maid named Annabelle, a demon, a vampire and a few shifters. Ari falls in love only to have that reality changed and she struggles to right the wrongs in her past. She doesnt realize that when she alters one life, she changes everything. You then follow Ari and Aimee live in different realities loving and living differently.
I can honestly say that The Devil's Roses is fast becoming one of my favorite series I've read. I can't wait to see what happens in Hyde, the third install in this series.
Kudos Tara on yet another Good Read!!!

Honestly, I can't understand why there are so many good reviews for this book! It makes no sense! Convoluted, nonsensical plot... Insta-love... Crappy teen level dialogue.... Entire paragraphs to describe someone's clothing! The weird, choppy timeline... And my god- The typos and misspellings! (More of those in the first book than this one, but still.)

I finally burst out laughing at 73%, when after yet another Ari timeline switch, Aleks jumps up & out of NOWHERE proclaims, "I know what it is! It's a soul stealing demon! I have to go!" Really? Seriously??? Ugh...

I had to stop. I finished this book- I couldn't let the sacrifice of my time be in vain. But I returned Book 3 unopened & unread. Thank goodness these books were "free" from Kindle Unlimited & thank goodness I don't have to read any more! Really! That bad!

Ooh I'm a sucker for sci-fi and the character of Ari makes my nerd soul sing. Multiple time lines and the devastating consequences of of a single touch on multiple people? That being said, this author is a sucker for love triangles and sex. Still a fast read and I loved some of the more subtle themes.

Wow! I was very impressed with this book; this author has such an interesting way of thinking. She introduces this certain sci-fi gift/power that literally blows my mind when I stop to think about it. I became a little confused but not enough for me to stop reading the story. After reading this book, there is no way I can stop the series.

What a difference from the first book. Very intense and dark, almost gothic. I loved the scene when Lorri aka Lucifer rips the head from the supposed villain. She doesn't even let her finish her villain monologue. The Devil's Roses a great series. I read all three books within hours of each other.

I enjoyed book 1 and couldn't wait to read book 2. The author kept trying to cram so much into the end of this book that it started to get confusing. Too much pushing and winking. Book 3 is free so I will try again

Bane (The Devil's Roses, #2)
by Tara Brown

Stefanie's Review
4 Stars

OK.. Can I start off saying I loved this book even more then I loved Cursed??!! I honestly did not think that was possible. But, guess what.... I did...

The story starts off with Ari living in the desert of New Mexico working at her uncle's restaurant. Her favorite thing to do is run. Ari runs every chance she gets. One afternoon after going for her daily run Ari started not feeling good. Her hands started to burn. That's when her life turned upside down. She touches her uncle and everything starts to change. She goes back to the day she was born when her mother dies. Instead of her uncle taking her, Ari ends up in a orphanage and her life turns upside down. Now, she's standing the in street. She is covered in tattoo's, piercings, shaved head and has the scars from a lifetime of cutting herself. She has the memories of how bad her life in the orphanage was that she ran away and lived in the streets. Then, the next memory she's living in New Mexico with her uncle. She literally has 2 personalities!!!

We also learn what is going on with Aimee and her love triangle with Shane and Aleks!! Aimee is still very much in love with both men. Tara Brown gives us more on what the actual "Roses" are. We are introduced to what exactly Aimee is and what her actual powers are. We get to meet new characters as well. There's Annabelle, Lydia, Andy. Ari's love triangle. Ben and Lucas. The 2 sexy warewolfs.

Ari learns her powers can be VERY dangerous!!! She pushes people back. At the touch of a arm she is sending people back to certain times in their lives. It's not necessarily a good or a bad thing.

By the end of Bane. Ari has lived a total of 3 different lives!! She has also effected all of her new friends lives dramatically!! This is def a crazy story. With more twists and turns then I saw coming. Just when you think you know what's coming next. Turn the page. I am super excited to see what happens in Hyde Book 3 of The Devil's Roses!!

Actual Rating 3.5 Stars

So Bane is book two in the The Devils Roses series. And in this book, we meet Ari, who like Aimee from book one, is gifted with special powers.

I really liked this book and I was glad that it answered some unanswered questions I had from Cursed. I have read in some ones review before, that they thought there were too many characters to keep track of. I sort of agree with this. The range of characters is a good thing, although, at one point I read one characters name and thought, Um... who??

My favourite character in this book is probably Lydia. She really is just like the mother hen, and I found her character very warming and comforting.

During the book, the plot line changes significantly. This really irritated me at first as I felt the changes were becoming a little too many, but in the end, it worked nicely with the story line.

Spoiler: I found the part where Ari finds out that Daniel is the mole, very unconvincing. He could have been like the dark ones and still remember what she had changed, and that is why he recognised her. I didn't really understand how that was reason enough for him being the mole? But I guess there is probably more to it in the other books as it all seemed slightly suspicious when it came to Daniel. End of spoiler

I debated with myself, whether to give this book a three or four star rating. I really like the first three quarters of it. But towards the end, more questions arose and it ended on a cliffhanger again. Which kind of annoyed me. I'm not great with cliffhangers.

Bane had me laughing and crying throughout. It was a good read and I would recommend it to friends.

Things have changed since book one, in this book we meet Ari, and although Aimee is in the book she isn't a main character per say. Ari oh that girl I just want to run up to her and hug her hard, and say it's going to be okay. She's just...I love her I mean how can you not? "I like boys, I don't want my stomach to knot up and make me hate every man I meet just because the other me did things she shouldn't have people hurt her. I've never been raped, I've never been molested, I've never done things for money that I'm ashamed of. Well beyond selling greasy food to already fat people." Then there's Lucas, a mystery all on his own, and boy don't I love a good mystery. "Lucas was an unknown to Ari. He had managed to make her fall in love with him without ever sharing a detail about himself. It was like loving a complete stranger in secret. She had assumed he was a vampire like Andy. Until she realized Andy never went outside and he was always outside. The informative and dull sun lesson she had endured ruled it out. Then she thought he could be like Aleksander, but he couldn't just vanish into thin air the way Aleks did. Also he wasn't seductive the way Aleksander was. His smell drove her nuts. The fact Lucas never spoke much drove her nuts. She wasn't certain how he felt about her which made new Ari peaceful inside and annoyed her mercilessly." I liked this book a alot probably more then the first book because there's a lot more going on and we're meeting new characters in each book. The ending of the book was also better then the first as the cliffhanger wasn't as bad.

If you loved Cursed then you will be smitten with Bane.

The story starts off by introducing you to Ari. She is a seemingly normal giil living in the desert of New Mexico. Her mother died when she was a baby and she has since been living with her uncle. Her days consist working at her Uncle's restaurant and running, which is an avid love for her.

One day after one of her runs Ari starts to feel ill. Thinking its just the flu she retires to bed, but when her Uncle comes to check on her the "illness" has a devastating effect for Ari.

Life as she knew it will never be the same again. She has been thrown into the life of the supernatural and has a hard time coming to terms with everything and the more she tries to right wrongs the more she twists her life around.

Aimee befriends Ari when she first enters the house that her and Alks have been residing at. Aimee has come to terms with what she is and has gained a certain amount of control. She has been residing at a hosue with fellow supernatural beings. Her love triangle becomes more blurred now that Ari has entered the picture.

Through all the twists and turns in this book you will fall in love with all of the characters and develop a kinship with Ari as she tries to figure out how to control her new found power and also how she deals with the consequences of what her powers do to those around her.

This was a great second book to the series. I cannot wait to start Hyde which is the third book in the Devil's Roses series.

I don’t how Tara Brown keeps it all straight in her head. She has got to be OCD. I just finished Bane, the second book in the Devil’s Roses series, and all I can say is WOW! I enjoyed Cursed (book one) but it had nothing on Bane. Bane is non stop action from page one. We pick up with what Aimee has been up to and how she has progressed to become a Rose. Aimee is living in a boarding style home with other Roses including Aleks. Its kind of run by Lydia who helps new recruits learn about their powers before going to New York for Rose training. We also get introduced to Ari who possess more power than Lydia could have imagined. While Ari is trying to control her power and suppress the “other Ari” she repeatedly changes the lives of everyone around her while rewriting her past over and over again as well. It’s a definite page turner. You may even need to keeps notes to keep up with the ever changing lives of the residents at Lydia’s. This book has it all; romance, paranormal, fights. My heart broke over and over for Aimee as each new life hurt her more and more. Ari is a hot mess, just trying to figure out her place in the Roses, keeping her power under control and finding her way back to her first love. With all that is happening Tara still throws in a few surprises for the audience. I finished this book and was most eager to move on the Hyde. Tara Brown

I give this book 3.5 stars. I would have given it 4 stars but the author kept changing the past which affected the future and I just wanted to keep things the way they were and make them less confusing.

This book is about a girl named Ari. She thinks she is a normal girl working at a diner until she passes out from the heat. Her uncle, the man who raised her, is by her side when she wakes up. When she touches him, she sends him back in time and he chose another route instead of adopting her which left Ari an abused orphan. She wakes up with her head shaved and piercings all over her body. She finds her way to Lydia and Aimee in the refuge house. They teach her what she is and how to deal with it. Ari meets her mate there as well. She learns that her power is taking people back in time where they hit the fork in the road. Instead of taking the one they were living in, they are forced to take the others. Some don’t turn out as well as she hopes. She tries to change her past, but ends up affecting her future too many times to count. Through the changes the book doesn’t get confusing. I just got annoyed because I was happy the way the story was going, but then it changes drastically and screws everything up.

This was a really good book and I enjoyed every minute of it. The author has a way with words that keeps you reading until you want more. I couldn’t put the book down. On to the next one!

I have to say I love this author. I am so thankful I found the first book of two of this author series on hundredzeros because I have fallen in love with her writing. I am also thankful her ebooks do not cost more the a hand held copy. Nothing bothers me more than paying the price of a print copy for an ebook. I have bought all of her Born series just because it is that awesome (I only pay for ebooks if they are great) and will be purchasing these as I read them.
Now on to the review. I really enjoyed how this series carried on introducing a new character and separate story line while still honoring the first book. I enjoyed Ari, she was so complex and interesting and I love how she explores her many different sides. She understand that they are all a part of who she becomes even when the parts are no longer there. I also like how her love interest is not as annoying as Aimee's. I need that to come to a head. Lots of action to hold the readers attention. I love the original twist on religion this author brings. Never seen anything like it in all the fallen angel/ nephilim books I have read. From the Born series to this I have seen nothing but great create twist on story lines that I thought could never become something new. You have a new fan in me Ms. Brown.

Bane is a perfect continuation of what started in Cursed; another character, Ari, that reaches out and pulls you in to her mind. And the best part is, we still get Aimee from the first book, along with several other characters you will love (and sometimes hate.)

More is revealed in this book about the Devil's Roses, although it becomes easy to see in this book that the next 3 books after this will be necessary to effectively tell the rest of the story.

Take what you have heard about all of the supernatural myths that still linger: Angels, demons, fallen, shape-shifters, time-benders, all of it. Then throw it all in a pot with an insane amount of imagination and a healthy helping of detail, and let it simmer for a while and you may get an idea of what this series covers. Seriously.

Just like the first book, this book contains its own story within the collective story that the series holds, and could almost be a stand alone. Almost, because at the end, you'll need to know more.

Bane was much better for me than Cursed was. We get a whole new cast of characters but our familiars from Cursed (Aimee, Aleks, Shane) all still appear though the focus is not on them. The way the plots weave together is quite exceptional. Tara takes us down a darker path this go round and it is intense. Ari is just a normal girl until tragedy hits .... from her own hands. Using a gift she wasn't aware she had changes her entire world. A lifetime of memories of suffering pain, abuse and loneliness mix with her current memories of happiness, love, and family only causing confusion, fear, and maybe a whole lot of chaos. Bane has so many twists that I couldn't predict what would come next. The scenes that involved abuse were written very well, giving us the information we needed without being too descriptive. I look forward to reading Hyde and see if the pattern continues with all new characters.
