Working in the ER of a small South Carolina hospital, Dr. Rhea Lynch has seen it all—most of it at 2:00 a.m. But when an interracial couple is rushed in, beaten and bloodied by a mysterious hate group, the patients show signs of a fast-acting pulmonary infection Rhea has never seen before. Within hours, it proves fatal. Soon, more victims are rushed in, and an epidemic has Dawkins County in an icy grip of terror. As the puzzling illness claims more lives by the hour, Rhea begins to draw some startling conclusions about the nature of the illness...and about its connections to the military. How could something like this have happened in this peaceful community? Can it be stopped? Every second counts as Rhea desperately tries to fit the pieces together—and soon realizes that she is dealing with something bigger and more terrifying than she could ever imagine.
The first time I have read Gwen Hunter, so naturally I start with book 2 in the series. This was a very good read with excellent plotting and loaded with snappy repartee. Rightwing rednecks go after interracial couples for mixing the races. They do it by engaging in ecological terror, introducing compounds discovered during the Iraq war. Well done, recommended.
Another good addition to the Rhea Lynch, M. D. series, number 2. Medical suspense, terrorism, a good story with a little romance thrown in for good measure.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Dr. Rhea Lynch is such a wonderful character. She's a very flawed and relatable character that manages to draw you in despite herself. I think what I most enjoy about this series is how the stories twist and turn in a real life manner. The characters are multifaceted and the mystery intriguing. Nothing feels forced and you definitely understand the who, what, where, and why's in the end.
I gave this book three stars because I really liked the story line but there was way too much technical jargon. I think it could have been less. I read for the fun of it, not to learn a bunch of medical stuff that could have been shortened to just what the reader has to know to understand .
In year three of COVID, with no cure in sight and the third or is it the fourth mutation biological germ warfare is relevant and frightening in the ease of germs spreading. It is quite nice to have the whole thing wrapped up within the covers of a book though.
One of my favorite authors. Completely different genres. Shows her talent of switching genres. Each book I have read by Ms Hunter has left me satisfied with the desire to read everything she can write. Happy reading!
When a friend lent me this book I had no idea it was #2 in a series. The author refers to things that happened in the first book, but it was okay as a stand alone. Anyway, I enjoyed the medical thriller aspect of this book.
I'm not medically trained but I enjoyed this medical centered story. Not too technical to be enjoyable but still.very technically interesting. I plan to read the rest of the series now and will go back to the first book.
Brilliant book Realistic ER scenarios Rhea is a very likeable heroine and her friends and colleagues very believable Her inexperience in romantic issues make me want her to get her white knight...
Another great book that has me almost late to work because I was so caught up in it. Same great characters,, plus a few new ones, excellent medical mystery.
Non stop action, of the worst sort, when a type of pneumonia starts popping up in a small rural town. As an ER doctor, sleep is going to be hard to catch. Was it deliberately caused?
I tend to gravitate towards medical fiction, but this is also crime/mystery fiction. I think I'd prefer a little less crime. It's fairly over the top. I previously said I wouldn't keep reading this series and should have stuck with that choice.
Dr. Rhea Lynch has people dying in her emergency room of what looks like a pulmonary infection. They die quickly from whatever is attacking their internal organs.
In Dr. Lynch’s attempt to learn more about the infection/epidemic, she is caught up in the midst of a hate group, religious fanatics and a terrorist germ warfare attack.
The book is well written and is fast paced and suspenseful. I could hardly put the book down until it was finished. The story has lots of action and the plot is filled with twists and turns. The characters are most interesting and unusual. I am looking forward to reading another book in the series. I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. Carol Hendrickson does a great job narrating the book.
I was truly excited to read this book because Hunter's first book was a page turner but this one was just ok. I felt like it lacked direction and left so many unanswered questions about characters. Now do not get me wrong, it is still worth reading but I think the bar was set high on my expectations because of the first book.
Gwen (AKA Faith) Hunter can write the most complicated pots and still manage to ties up all the loose ends, make it all fit, and have it all make sense. This a suspenseful series with great characters.
