Her name is Bond. Jamie Bond. And her life is about to be shaken and stirred in a cocktail of sex, lies, scandal, and one very dead body. Jamie Bond is a former cover model who switches gears to take over the family business: The Bond Agency, a high-powered P.I. firm located in Los Angeles that specializes in domestic espionage—catching cheating husbands. Jamie's assembled a team of other disenchanted former models to help her take names and kick derrieres among L.A.'s wealthiest philandering husbands. Her current client: Mrs. Veronica Waterston, the young, distraught wife of superior court judge, Thomas Waterston, known for his tough sentencing, right-wing leanings, and his fondness for blondes with double D's. Easy target. But Jamie's simple case takes an unexpected turn for the worse when the not-so-good judge winds up on the ten o'clock news with a bullet through his head.
It's clear that someone has set Jamie up, and suddenly she's on the run, under fire, and in serious jeopardy of losing it all. With a hot A.D.A. on her trail, a killer on the loose, and her life on the line, Jamie must prove once and for all that nobody messes with a Bond.
While the characters make zero sense and none of this story could have happened in an actual world with rules and regulations and laws and stuff, at least the mystery turned out mildly interesting. I mean, Jamie is pretty dumb for a P.I. and the ADA seems to have never heard of "motive" as an element in crime and don't even get me started on her "dad". So I was actually a little surprised that the mystery actually held together. It made sense and everything. It was only everything around it that was completely impossible.
I wouldn't read more in the series if you paid me to do it, though. It was bad enough that there's no sign of P.I. training (let alone requirements like apprenticeship and other nasty state requirements that make that whole agency a joke) and that Jamie slips up at the drop of a butter knife. But I lost all patience in the end when we learn
At about halfway in, Melissa asked why I was still reading. I didn't really have an answer but I think it's because I kind of wanted to see where the relationships were heading and it's such a short book that the investment was tiny. And by "relationships" I don't mean just Jamie and Aiden (though there were sweet elements there), but also all her friends. They had good personality and byplay and that was enough to keep me interested through the clunkiness. It won't be enough for me to come back, though. I'm sorry, but I ask a bit more reasonable relation to "things that can happen" in my action/mysteries.
I appreciated the attempt. It could have been...cute? But any cuteness was completely overshadowed by a more then improbable plot, and a heroine who makes the most elementary of mistakes (and being a PI only made them worse--she bordered on too stupid to live syndrome). It's a good thing she lives in such an impossible world where you can escape a courtroom, punch prosecutors in the face, and shoot people without consequences.
Unbreakable Bond was a fun, light read although not particularly original. It was sort of Charlie's Angels meets One for the Money. The Charlie's Angels aspect because the story was about some beautiful women working as private investigators. The Stephanie Plum angle because they were not very good at their jobs and mostly survived on luck.
Jamie Bond (yeah, eye-roll at the name) a former supermodel, took over her father's Private Eye business and hired a group of her friends (all also former supermodels) to work with her. Unsurprisingly, that was not a successful business model (no pun intended). Jamie was working her standard cheating husband case when her mark was found dead and she became the prime suspect.
Despite claiming that all of the P.I.s were supposedly super intelligent (one of them allegedly spoke five languages and was capable of hacking the Pentagon), that intelligence was never visible. Honestly, the strongest thing they had going for them was their looks, and that was absolutely the primary weapon in their arsenal and the most frequently used. So claims of those characters having other qualities or depth rang false, because when it came down to it, they used their looks for pretty much everything. And I do not think you will get many sympathy votes from readers by playing the fiddle over how these gorgeous women were rejected from their from their former career as supermodels for being three pounds "overweight" or no longer being in the teenage blush of youth. It was tiring to read so often about how stunning they were. They certainly did not excel in job competence. In fact, they did very little investigating. Mostly they just posed as honey traps for cheating husbands. It was not hard to see why their company was in the red. It was also annoying that there was a setup for a stagnant love triangle (again, extremely reminiscent of the Stephanie Plum series).
Despite that, it was an entertaining enough read. It worked as a light appetizer in between some of my heavier reads. Unbreakable Bond definitely not accurate on crime procedures or believable, but it was a fun cozy mystery with Chick Lit airs. I may read the next book in the series when I am in the mood for another quick read.
RATING FACTORS: Ease of Reading: 4 Stars Writing Style: 3 Stars Characters and Character Development: 3 Stars Plot Structure and Development: 3 Stars Level of Captivation: 3 Stars Originality: 2 Stars
Unbreakable Bond just lacks all the usual hallmarks of a great Gemma Halliday, the quick wit, the hilarious dialogue, the over the top fun. Sure, book's still light and quick, but the summary's more fun than the actual story, and Jamie Bond's investigative capers just don't compare with Halliday's usual heroines. What's left is a rather average murder mystery that, while likeable, features the same recycled stuff I've seen plenty of times before.
Jamie Bond, as model turned PI, has a great back-story and lots of potential, but the writing just doesn't back her up. I'm disappointed because she has neither the witty internal monologue nor the hilarious back and forth dialogue that really makes these kinds of books an enjoyable read; she's fun but not exactly memorable or laugh out loud. Without that, she's really not much different from any other cocktail sipping sleuth; whether she's undercover at a club, trying to stay one step ahead of the hotshot ADA, or confronting the murderer, she feels more like she's going through the motions while tossing in the obligatory one liner than like she's solving the crime in style. So I've seen her type before, she really doesn't add anything new or memorable.
Plus, a good heroine's able to distract me from the plot holes - that really doesn't happen here. After all, she's running from the cops because she's a person of interest in a murder investigation, I don't even need her lawyer telling her why that's not a good idea to know that's not a good idea. Or maybe it is, since the cops are so incompetent at catching her, even when they figure out her identity, I can actually believe her ex-model investigators are able to piece together the puzzle before they do. And it all leads to the good old standby scene where Jamie's blindsided by the murderer who doesn't kill her but locks her up instead and threatens her with a gun when she comes to but is then easily distracted into giving a long winded speech. All in all, all of it could've been done with a lot more flair.
And I'm gonna get skewered for this part, but Jamie and Aiden, the hotshot ADA, could really use a few pointers from, say Hartley and Chase from Halliday's Deadly Cool series. No seriously, Aiden is a terrible foil for Jamie, none of the other characters are that great really, Caleigh, Sam, and Maya act more like employees than the tight knit group they should be, her dad Derek has a few moments, but Aiden just doesn't work. Ended up being rather dull and incredibly lame.
I'm probably a bit harsh on Unbreakable Bond because it deviates too much from Halliday's typical formula, but that formula works dammit and this book desperately needs more of Halliday's usual wit and charm.
I'm wavering between 2 & 3 stars for this one. Usually Gemma Halliday's books get 3 or more stars from me because I love her books! However, this one was different for me, I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Not sure exactly what wasn't right, but I just had a hard time finishing it. Usually, I have a hard time putting her books down! If this was my first Gemma Halliday book, I might would have enjoyed it more, but since it's not, I feel its lacking her usual recipe of awesomeness!
Unbreakable Bond is the first Gemma Halliday book that I've read. And it was cute. It would be a good book to read on an airplane. If you weren't already reading something else. It's light and fluffy and fun with absolutely ZERO substance. Anything you could want to know about the plot is in the summary.
Personally, if I'm in the mood for this kind of book, I'd rather read Janet Evanovich or Tiffany Snow, but I'll give Gemma Halliday another shot. I'm pretty sure I have another book of hers on my Kindle somewhere . . .
First of all, thank you Gemma!! And Jennifer!! I loved this book. I hope this is beginning of a great series of books. I can see this going many different places with all the players from this book, but mainly Jamie, Danny and Aiden. Also loved the father daughter relationship with Derek and Jamie. Really enjoyed the courtroom drama/if you want to call it that. As expected, anything from Gemma is worth your time and is going to be joy in the process. Thank you ladies.
I've read other books by Gemma Halliday so when this one became available as a free kindle download I didn't hesitate to grab it. It did not disappoint and in fact, I quite liked it better than her spying in high heels series. Well done, nice mystery, although I thought it was obvious and was slightly disappointed that Jamie didn't consider the person as a suspect all along.
This is a fun murder mystery story full of great characters like James "Jamie" Bond, her employees Sam, Maya, and Carleigh, swinging friend Danny, and her ageless father Derek.
Jamie runs head on into tight, dangerous, and sometimes comical situations while trying to prove her innocence in the murder of her client's cheating husband.
I look forward to reading more books in this series.
loved this new series by gemma. jaime is "model"beautiful(literally)but has a sharp mind and wit to go with it. add to this a few more gorge girls and original cincept on p.i. work and you have a prescription for yep, murder.this will be a very interesting new series linda l
I was hoping for more of a Shelby Nichols or Stephanie Plum type book. The story started out way slow and I can’t say I really like any of the characters. But the mystery turned out to be pretty good. I am going to give #2 a try.
I'm a big fan of Gemma Halliday and was taken in by the whole Bond spin. Overall, it is a nice light read with not a lot going on. Unbreakable Bond is not what I hoped it would be and I couldn't even finish it.
I thought this was a perfect book for a quick read. James "Jamie" Bond is a runway model turned P.I. What I liked best was the witty and charming characters, the unexpected turn of events and the small sparks of romance.
Gemma Halliday never fails to disappoint her readers (especially me) with her writing. Can't wait for the next book!!!
James (Jamie) Bond is the owner/operator of the family PI firm. In this book she is framed for a murder. I love the way Gemma Halliday writes. Her stories are fun and light. I'll be looking forward to the next book in this series.
I really enjoy Gemma Halliday. This book was a bit more serious than her high heeled mysteries. Not as funny, but a bit more realistic. Still a very enjoyable read.
This was a fast-paced cozy mystery and I enjoyed reading it but found myself disappointed in 2 or 3 unbelievable parts of the story that could have been avoided to make this book a 4-5 star read. I was ready to give this a higher rating until the "wrap-up" at the end.
*Spoiler alert* Running from the cops would not be what I expect any licensed PI to do, even if wrongfully accused of a crime. The court room escape and the shooting of the murderer without ANY repercussions is just ludicrous. I think the escape could have been omitted altogether and the plot resolved by having Jamie work WITH the police. I also don't think shooting someone, even if in self-defense, would resolve itself so quickly. I couldn't believe she would so easily forgive her friend Danny. I expected he would have been wrapped up/implicated in the whole plot as well, maybe to try to takeover her business or out of jealousy.
Overall, I still enjoyed reading it but would have rated it higher had I not needed to suspend belief of how the justice/legal system truly works. This is the first I've read by these co-authors but I'm willing to read more of their work in the future.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Another series from the Halliday stables and it looks like it is another winner!
Jamie Bond has left the world of modelling (after all as soon as she hit 25 she was past it!), she has taken over the PI business her father set up and with some other former models lives a life tracking down straying husbands! They need a big payment/client to ensure that they all keep their jobs so when a Judge's wife comes to find out if he is straying they jump at the job. So far so good, yes he is easily distracted by Jamie's ... cough .... charms! and the following day they had over the evidence and take the cash payment (a lot of the clients pay cash - but Jamie makes sure all the correct taxes etc are paid!), that evening though Jamie sees the judge again or at least a picture of him as he has been killed ..... and the police want to talk to the lady he was fawning over the previous night .... gulp! Then they find the supposed Mrs Waterston dead ... double gulp! and now Jamie is wearing an orange jumpsuit and being arraigned for murder, time for the Bond Girls to step up and find out the truth quickly!
Nice read. Loved Jamie and her cohorts. Would have given it more stars except for the following: Question - if Jamie gave Mrs. Waterston the disk (or whatever) the morning after the event where she had the interaction with the judge, how did Mrs. Waterson know what room number Jamie had given the judge so that his body could have been placed there the night before? The time line was off, which is an unforgivable error. Perhaps no other reader picked up on this, but when I read a book I READ it. Which brings up another problem - proofreading. A good job of proofreading was not done. Perhaps the authors did it themselves, which is really a very bad thing to do, as they know what they wanted to write and so miss what they really wrote. In any case, I liked Jamie and will go forward with this series, hoping that perhaps closer attention was given to the ensuing books than was given to this one.
"Unbreakable Bond", the first in the Jamie Bond series, operates at two levels, a somewhat ditzy female P.I. investigating a surprisingly dark tale of betrayal and murder. Tone down the humour and ramp up murder plot - you'd have a first rate thriller. As it stands, however, the reader gets an enjoyable romp as James "Jamie" Bond investigates the killing of a judge. At first her worry is that the Bond Agency, which had just completed surveillance, and provided evidence for divorce to his widow, may be dragged down by the scandal. But, when it becomes clear that their client was, in fact, an actress and that the evidence seems to lead towards Jamie as the killer, it's time for the Bond Agency to get to work. The evidence against Jamie continues to mount and it is clear that someone is hell bent on destroying her life - and doing a good job at hiding their tracks. It's actually a better read than the sum of its parts - but it could have been much better. 3 Stars.
I am not a fan of the plot. It felt like a whole waste of time. BUT, in saying that, I did think the beginning was strongest, right before some really strange (and not in a good way) twists in the plot - and actions taken by Jamie.
I do also love the idea of her agency - not so much that it's a PI firm for cheaters. But that I get such strong Charlie's Angels vibes! (Even though I've never really watched the original show, the early 2000s movies still apply!)
Romantic interests-ish: The first one is too...I'm not convinced he's a strong romantic interest. The other guy is an ass and I don't think I like him as a romantic interest.
Still, figures my head is in the mood for a brain musher, on to the next book, if not only for the chemistry between Jamie and her girls/co-workers.
The voice in this story is good. That's what got me to 40% before I DNFd. Because really. "he lied down"? And there was at least one other grammar error that made me wonder if English was not her first language. So why didn't she hire a good editor?
And although she presents a logical progression of thought, some of the facts don't hold up. What stationary manufacturer has the names of everyone who bought a particular stationary design? And if they do (which they might if they only sold online), and they only sold that design to five people, that design would be discontinued because, really? Only five customers? Yeah, that doesn't hold up to reality and makes the crime too easy to solve.
I liked this book. The characters were interesting. The setting is an all woman PI firm that focuses on catching cheaters. For this book it was fun and moved fast. The main character is getting set up. There is lots of action which moves from place to place introducing characters, world building and moving the mystery along. There are teaser chapters for the next book. They give you enough to want to try book 2. I will say that I don't know if I want to always read cases around cheaters. But I will continue the series and see what happens.
I admit I did feel a twinge of disappointment: No international espionage in this Bond tale. But I got over it fast as I read on about Jamie Bond, L.A. P.I.. W.O.W.! I am now hooked on this talented young sleuth and her crew. This Unbreakable fast-moving tale of infidelity, murder, hot bodies and hotter minds, had me unable to stop flipping the pages until I reached the happy ending. Even happier, there are more books in this Bond series for me to investigate. Ladies, pour me another!
This book had promise to be witty and humorous as it follows the adventures of James Bond, the female private detective. The characters were interesting and somewhat humorous. The style of writing was simple and clear. The book involved a murder investigation which began as Jamie was set up as the murderer of a prominent judge. The case itself was pedestrian. The wife turned out to be the murderer. The only excitement came as Jamie realized her best friend was helping the police locate her. This is a good book, but it had the potential to be more.
What a fun start to a series! Jamie Bond is hardheaded, sassy, and has killer looks that she's learned to work to her clients' benefit. Catching cheating men is her forte and her three bombshell colleagues are right there with all the action. There's an intriguing father-daughter dynamic that will be interesting to see develop as the series moves along. There are also two potential romantic interests for Ms. Bond, though right now, I'm not sure which one I'm rooting for.
Favorite Line ~ "The problem was I knew diddly about running a business. Men. That's what I knew."
