Berl Make Tea

Rate this book
Berl's wife ran away with the gardener. Could you blame her? Berl is a little Jewish odd-job man who wanders around in a black serge suit, striped trousers, sandals and a black homburg hat with fungus growing on it.

Berl's a born victim. Always trouble. Crisis after crisis. As for now, the only thing that's worrying Berl is maybe his wife will come back.

Chaim Bermant (1929-1998) was born in Breslev, Poland and moved to Glasgow, Scotland at the age of 8. He was educated in Glasgow and became a teacher before joining Scottish TV and then Granada. Bermant became a prominent Anglo-Jewish journalist, and had a regular coloumn in The Jewish Chronicle and occasionally to the national press, particularly The Observer and The Daily Telegraph.

During his lifetime, Bermant wrote a number of scripts for both Radio and Television, including the BBC, as well as several for Anglia TV. Bermant's book, The Squire of Bor Shachor was serialized on the Radio and Bermant also appeared in several productions in person, including, in 1981, one of the BBC's 'Everyman' series. Bermant wrote a total of 31 books; his novels and non-fiction works reflect his sometimes controversial opinions and his observations on Anglo-Jewish society.

First time I read this author I became thoroughly intrigued, so much so, that I have read everything else of his that I could find. His books often come up on Amazon and occasionally, are affordable, so well worth watching for if one wants an in-depth journey into Jewish Life in the UK throughout the ages. Berl Make Tea is a book of its time in the 1960s, well written, very funny, dry wit and clever humour.

I bought this paperback in a 'sale' bin at Woolworths in Plymstock, in about 1972 - I think it cost 10p. I have still got it 40 years later, and I have read it at least 6 or 7 times, as have my parents, brother, and several friends. It is just very funny, and I will probably continue to read and enjoy it for the rest of my life. It's about this harmless, inept, and unlucky Jewish chap called Berl, and his sad life. I love it. By the way, the title is actually 'Berl Make Tea'. Now, where is ?....I think it's time I read it again...
