If you've seen my bookshelf here, you know I rarely write reviews. But this book is worth breaking my norm.
First, I have to say I LOVE smart heroes. I write them. I read them. To me, a man's intelligence rates above bulky muscles--but an intelligent man with a great body is like ice cream with cake and some whipped cream too. We get that with Jackson Cooper, the head of Cysnet, the company that China works for. He's a genius who started working for the government in his teens, then started his own company in his twenties, but he's also on the top of the "sexiest men" lists. Basically, he's my dream man.
China Mack--I absolutely love her. Intelligent, quirky--she wears glasses and T-shirts that celebrate the many fandoms she belongs too. She's not the stereotypical heroine and I absolutely LOVE IT. (Thank you, Tiffany!) She knows she's different and she doesn't apologize for it. She has a huge crush on her boss and although her clumsiness around him might sound cliche', with China it's not. She struggles with social skills and struggles to read social cues. (My own readers who loved AFTER MATH and Scarlett's struggle with social anxiety will probably love China.)
Jackson asks China to help him with a project that has a very fast turnaround time and is cloaked in secrecy. After some initial social awkwardness, China jumps in and gets to work. But it soon becomes apparent that the job she's part of is dangerous--people working on the project start turning up dead. And to make things even more complicated, China's sixteen-year-old niece shows up and asks to live with her. Throw in Clark, her hot new neighbor who is VERY interested in her, and China's world is turned upside down. But I love it because China is so far out of her comfort zone in so many arenas, and while she recognizes this, she forges on despite her anxiety and insecurities.
China must learn who to trust and who not to trust, but most of all, she learns to trust herself and her instincts. (Girl power!) I love that she's so determined to take charge and be control of her life and circumstances, but recognizes that she's missing out on something wonderful by going with the status quo of her life. Sure, contentment is quite nice, but taking risks has the potential give her something spectacular. Watching China discover which risks are worth taking is a joy.
I was fortunate to receive an ARC of FOLLOW ME. I started this book at ten o'clock on a Saturday night and read until five a.m. before I finally forced myself to go to sleep, then woke up hours later and finished-- still in bed. (Sorry kids--self-sufficiency is a necessary life skill, and cereal is actually pretty good for you.) I can't wait until the next book is released--I plan to preorder the moment it's available.
FOLLOW ME is great for readers who love a good mystery, hot romance, sexy guys, a bit of a love triangle, smart heroes, and heroines who aren't the norm. FOLLOW ME stands out enough to stick with me for a quite a while.
