Rate this book
Riley Callahan’s plans to reveal his secret feelings for his best friend are ruined when his life is drastically altered in Afghanistan. Watching the love of his life falling for his brother was enough to send Riley straight to boot camp. But over a year later, he’s officially a marine, and Beau and Paige are no longer an item. When Riley’s tour in Afghanistan is up, he intends to confess his feelings to Paige and win his best friend’s heart once and for all. But all that changes when an IED takes the life of a comrade and leaves Riley an amputee. Now he’s heading home, injured and troubled. His plans to win Paige are a distant dream. She deserves so much more than the man that’s left. All he can do now is put some healthy distance between them. But upon his return he discovers his family has arranged for him to stay with Paige. Paige is a nurturer at heart and happy to take care of her best buddy. By all appearances he’s adjusting miraculously well to his disability. But as the days pass, Paige begins to see that the smiles and laughter are just a mask for the pain he’s hiding. He has nightmares and mood swings, and his unwavering independence keeps him from accepting help from anyone, including her. To make matters worse, her job is in serious jeopardy. The animal shelter that she’s poured her heart into has lost its funding, and she has three months to come up the money needed to save it. As the weeks wear on with the two in such close proximity, Paige’s feelings for Riley begin to shift into unchartered territory. Why is she suddenly noticing his corded arm muscles and the way his lips curl at the corners? Will she be able to deny her feelings for another Callahan brother? And will Riley let his heart heal so he can let Paige in?

This is a Christian contemporary romance with a rather unusual twist to it: Riley and Paige have been the best of friends for years, but Riley kept his love for Paige a secret from her. When she started seriously dating his brother Beau, Riley couldn't stand to watch her in love with his brother, and he enlisted in the Marines and ended up in Afghanistan. When Beau and Paige later broke up (this is, by the way, explored in the first book in this series, Falling Like Snowflakes), Riley planned to confess his feelings to Paige when he got home. But then he lost his leg in an IED explosion that also took the life of a good friend.

As the story begins, Riley is arriving home, injured in his mind and heart as well as physically, convinced that trying to win Paige's affections at this point would be a bad idea for both of them. He plans to let their close friendship dwindle away, but he didn't count on his family's and Paige's plans to have him recuperate at her home. It kills him to be so close to her. What he doesn't know is that Paige cares about him deeply as well, but she's having trouble getting behind the mask he wears now.

The plot is thickened by Paige's job issues: she works at a no-kill animal shelter that she loves with all her heart, but they're losing their funding and it looks like they're going to have to shut down. Between trying to get Riley to give her a chance and trying to find or raise funds to keep the animal shelter, Paige has her hands full!

Riley's shutting himself off from Paige and life got a little old for me after a while, though I had a lot of sympathy for his PTSD and his troubles adjusting to his amputation. The story dragged a little in the middle; it felt like the Riley and Paige relationship kept cycling around, two steps forward and one step back, with very slow progress. Riley often acted like a jerk because of his pain and the idea that he needed to push Paige away. For my taste she was a little too quick to let it go when he treated her poorly.

The Christian element in this novel is clearly present, but not overwhelmingly so. Sticklers might have issues with Riley and Paige living in the same home with just the two of them, though they're not together in a relationship for most of that time (and even when they are, it's kisses only).

This is a worthwhile, heartwarming read if you enjoy the Christian romance genre.

Big Surprise... 5 stars.. Everything about 'Just a Kiss' from its beautiful cover to the tale of Riley Callahan's tragic timing when it comes to the love of his life Paige Warren - met my expectations and more! This is the final book in the Summer Harbor series, and can be read alone, but don't do yourself the disservice! Read them all! A perfect title, because there is nothing 'just' about the kisses these 2 have with each other - from a years ago opportunity when they are in High School and thru to the present. Quite often I found myself extremely frustrated with Riley, yet this is not any usual story of 2 persons perfectly suited who just can't seem to get it together. They began as best friends, and have been for years. Sharing every little thing that has happened to them both. As this series begins Paige is dating Beau, Riley's older brother (despite it being quite obvious to the reader that Paige & Riley should have been together easily at this point), and Riley, struggling to cope with that fact, makes a sudden decision to join the Marines. Of course, Paige was never suited for Beau, and that swiftly comes to an end. Now, Riley is home dealing with not only having to come to terms with the loss of his leg during combat, but PTSD. A complex situation for all those who are close to him, especially Paige. The 'will they - won't they' scenario keeps the pages turning, and a pleading for Riley to find his inner peace. You cannot give to another unless you are whole yourself and this applies in every sense of the word for him. One more final glimpse at Summer Harbor, and a bonus side story, with the long awaited truth for Aunt Trudy & Sheriff Colton, 'Just a Kiss' is a beautiful conclusion to this series. I will surely miss the Callahan Family!

Thank you to Netgalley & Thomas Nelson Fiction for the ARC. This is my honest review.

There's something about an injured military hero that really tugs on the heartstrings. Riley was already suffering from unrequited love for his best friend/brother's girlfriend, but now he's getting used to life as an amputee and struggling with feelings of inadequacy and PTSD. Paige's loyalty and devotion to him in his time of need is admirable, but instead of growing closer together, they encounter more difficulties in their relationship. Riley's emotional pain has him fighting his feelings for Paige even as she is falling in love with him. Lots of drama and angst as Paige and Riley's relationship finally shifts into romantic territory and they both learn how to fight their own battles and issues while supporting each other. Great chemistry and tension, especially with the kisses that are more than "just a kiss" ;)

JUST A KISS is the third book in the Summer Harbor series by Denise Hunter. Its Riley and Paige’s story and it is sure to pull on the reader’s heart strings. It will surely give you all the feels, let me tell you. My emotions were all over the place and I was giggling one minute and tearing up, the next. I really liked the setting of the small town of Summer Harbor and its history. I really got to know the people of this beautiful, small Maine town and I also know I will fall more in love with all of these characters as I go back and read the two books I missed.

JUST A KISS is a wonderful story of a tight knit family and childhood friends that will worm their way into your heart. Riley Callahan is in love with his best friend, Paige, but she falls for his brother and Riley heads off to boot camp. An IED leaves him as an amputee. He has to face the PTSD, the shame he feels towards having to learn a new sense of independence, and reliance on Paige. To say Riley is unhappy is a huge understatement! Hang on to your seats! The twists and turns will keep you flipping the pages long into the night. Paige has a big secret that she doesn’t share with just anyone!

JUST A KISS is a quick read that you can easily read in one sitting and love every minute of it. It is one heck of a crazy emotional roller coaster ride. Although this is the 3rd Book in the series, it could be read as a stand alone novel. My favorite character of this story is Riley…He’s a tough Marine, big guy with a big ego and an even bigger heart. I have never met a Denise Hunter book that I didn’t love and once I started reading I knew I was going on one heck of an emotional journey! Whatever you are reading, put it down, and run and get this book! If you’ve never read a Denise Hunter novel (and you know who you are) this would be a perfect one to hook you!

Great ending to the Summer Harbor Series! From the first page to the last I was wrapped up in the story and eager to see what would happen to the hero and heroine. As the mom of a Marine, the hero's journey was especially touching for me. All the Summer Harbor novels have been excellent, but this one tops them all.

Just A Kiss is a wonderful story. I love stories where best friends fall in love and this book reinforces why. Family, friendship, romance, heartache and faith combine in this charming story, and there is no 'just' about the kisses in this book!

Riley has been in love with his best friend Paige for all of his adult life. But he never dared risk their friendship, even going so far as to enlist to avoid seeing her with other guys, especially his older brother. But now Riley is returning home from war and he will be living with Paige while he recovers from a bomb blast that cost him his leg. Riley believes, now more than ever, that Paige deserves more than he could give her, but he never counted on Paige's own feelings, nor how the time they spend in close proximity could draw them together or push them apart.

I loved every minute of this story. There were times I just wanted Paige and Riley to get it out in the open and talk to each other about how they felt! It would save them so much heartache. And while this certainly ramps up the tension between them, I loved how it doesn't continue on for too long. Riley and Paige have bigger issues to deal with than staying stuck in an I-love-him-but-I'll-never-say-anything phase. And that's what takes this beautiful book from a fun romance to a story of true courage and friendship.

Just A Kiss is the third and final book in the Summer Harbor series. It has been a wonderful privilege to share in the lives of the Callahan brothers, watching as they fall in love and grow within themselves and in their faith. Each of the books could be read separately but I think that this series does work best read in series order. And there is no reason not to when they are all such charming and enjoyable books. That said, I think Just A Kiss was my favourite.

I loved Riley, really loved Paige and loved their love story even more. Riley is dealing with a lot, including returning home from war, loosing half a leg and PTSD, not to mention his repressed feelings for Paige. Paige too has some underlying issues to deal with, and I totally felt for her in her loneliness and her belief that she doesn't belong. We also get to continue the stories of Beau, Eden and Micah, Zac and Lucy and even Aunt Trudy and Sheriff Colton, as well as the other Summer Harbor residents. There are also two weddings in this book (I'm not saying whose).

Overall, a fabulous and touching romance that mixed family, friendship, faith and perseverance perfectly.

Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Publishing for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I'm going to be right out front and say that this was my least favorite of the 3 Books in the Summer Harbor series by Ms. Hunter. After really liking the first two books, I went into this one with too high of expectations. And my expectations were dashed.

I never connected with Paige or Riley; in fact just the opposite. Paige came off as a needy doormat and Riley came off as a jerk. I kept telling myself, he was a wounded vet and in real life I think I would have been much more understanding of the difficulties he was facing. However, in this book, he just didn't appeal to me. I think perhaps his good characteristics were not defined enough and it seemed I only saw the less desirable elements of his personality. He refused support from his family and friends, refused to communicate right up until the end of the book and constantly ran away from his problems. I never felt that he really manned up and I needed him to. Although Paige was supposedly really this awesome person, I only saw her as a needy shadow in Riley's family. She didn't seem to be her own person. And for me their relationship fizzled and died. I was at the point where I had hoped that Paige found someone else and then I felt guilty for wanting her to get a life outside of Riley.

There was a secondary romance with "Miss" Trudy and the sheriff, but neither character was really developed in this book and I felt I was really dependent on knowing them from Books 1 and 2. If you only read this book, I would think their characters and their "romance" would have felt really flat. I have read the other books and it still felt underdeveloped. Plus I have to say that the "Miss" Trudy's name was a stumbling block for me. For most of the characters and all the primary characters she is Aunt Trudy, she had been married right out of high school and yet she was referred to as "Miss" Trudy. I would have been much happy if it was either Aunt Trudy or Trudy.

For those who don't know, this is a Christian based book and as such the romance falls under the sweet category and there are religious tones and discussions. For anyone who likes sweeter romances and Christian influenced books, Ms. Hunter should be a "go to" author.

For me the stories and subplots jumped around a lot which I think is unusual for Ms. Hunter's writing. I generally really like her writing voice and the flow of her stories. Even though I didn't like this as much as I wished I had, I will definitely continue reading Ms. Hunter's books. 2.5 Stars rounded up.

It's been a long time since I've read a Christian contemporary romance book.
This is the 3rd book in the Summer Harbor series, and can be read as a stand-alone. Since I didn't read the previous books I had no problem following the storyline and it's characters, but I think my reading experience would have been enriched had I read the previous books.
This is a wonderful story of friends to lovers ( well not actually lovers, but to MORE). The lead male character is also a returning injured Marine who has to deal with the loss of a leg, survivors guilt, and PTSD .
His " best friend" and the girl he's been in love with since he was a teenager is the person who has offered to care for him and help him with his recovery.
However he wants nothing more than to cut ties with her because He's not the man he once was and can't stand the thought of being around her if she's with some else...someone whole.

The story and writing were really good, and the characters were well developed.
But, half way through the story I found myself skimming ahead because the story started to drag.
It later picked up towards the end, and the flow of the story continued on from there nicely.
I really liked the ending ( wonderful HEA).
Good read!

Ahhhh! Such a sweet, sweet story! Denise weaves such a great emotional story with well-developed characters. She has a way of captivating you and drawing you into the story. Sooooo hard to put down!!! Filled with such wonderful phrases like: "She could feel a glimmer of optimism through the haze of loneliness." It's easy to empathize with Paige feeling rejected, not enough for anyone, and not belonging anywhere or to anyone. It's equally easy to sympathize with Riley, who had to learn to "improvise, adapt, overcome". My favorite quote from her book is: "...what the Spirit had been whispering softly in the quiet of the night." I think the blurb from a reviewer at the beginning of the book summed it up the best by saying, "trusting God doesn't make life perfect - without loss or sorrow - but can bring great joy" - and unexplainable peace! Everyone will be encouraged after reading this book. Love, LOVE it!!

The series has built to this book (but if you haven't read the series, you can definitely start here!) and it did not disappoint. Riley's story is filled with pathos and questions. He ran from Summer Harbor and has not come home a broken man who is still hopelessly in love with his best friend. Will she ever see him as more than her BFF? Paige wants to believe she can help him heal, but then she sees deeper layers to her BFF. Add in stress at work and family issues, and this book is a delight. Filled with sigh-worthy romantic moments to keep this reader very happy.

It's tough not to love the two main characters when one is a veteran and the other runs an animal shelter. The only thing that was a miss for me was that the two lived together as friends most of the novel. It seemed odd that Riley's family didn't make other arrangements for him when he returned from serving overseas as an amputee. Overall, a good read. My gratitude to Beth B for sharing her copy of the novel with me.

Thoroughly enjoyed it! Again, it had some things in it I didn't agree with, for example a single guy staying in a single girl's home alone, so it didn't get all five stars, but I loved the characters and the story. I wanted to stay in this small town longer, and am a bit sad the series is done...

This is the third and final novel in the Summer Harbor trilogy, and features one of my favourite romance tropes: friends to lovers (although, as is proper for Christian romance, it’s actually friends to more-than-friends). It’s the story of Riley, who has recently returned from service in the Middle East, service which has left him with issues.

But there were also some more awkward parts, like the implication that oysters weren’t shellfish (when the speaker is a lobsterman and therefore should know better, and he’s talking to someone who is allergic to shellfish). Or the suggestion that amputees can do anything these days—look at "that Olympic runner" (referring to the South African currently awaiting sentencing on a murder charge. Yes, amputees sure can do anything). A reference to the Paralympics would have been more timely and appropriate.

But what of the novel? Well, it was good but the ending was more cliché that I’d have liked, the Christian content was sporadic (I get that Riley may well have been having a crisis of faith due to his injury, but he actually made no reference to having any faith at all, ever). There were a couple of references to him having PTSD which didn’t entirely fit but came across as a half-fledged idea, never fully executed. I liked seeing more of the relationship between Miss Trudy and Sheriff Colton, and that would have been a highlight if the author hadn’t effectively given away the ending in her introductory Author Note.

After the first two books in the series, I was genuinely expecting Just a Kiss to be a five-star read for me. But there were too many not-quite-right aspects for my taste. It was good, but not great and not as good as I hoped it would be. Riley’s injury gave Hunter a great opportunity to delve into the physical and mental health issues facing returned servicemen and women, and it didn’t deliver. A solid read, but not something I'll re-read.

I enjoyed this book. It was cute and had a unique story, and I liked that the Army (or the Marines, in this case) played a role in the makeup of the plot. Having one of the main characters be a former Marine was an interesting perspective I enjoyed reading from, and I thought the dynamic between Riley and Paige was fun to read.

Individually, I thought the characters were great. Paige, especially, I liked because you got to see her point of view as someone who cares deeply for Riley and his well being. Seeing her try to navigate through his return home and the toll being overseas had on his his physical/mental health and what that means for their relationship I thought was done well. I also thought her own little side plot of dealing with abandonment added a little more depth to the story and worked well with her character's arc and the plot of the book.

I liked Riley’s character as well, and I like him with Paige, but his character felt a little bit off to me. Riley obviously came home with PTSD, but I don’t think it was written well. While the subject wasn’t handled lightly, it was also hardly ever brought up. Riley has outbursts that are due to PTSD but his episodes seem to only happen off the page, making Riley appear more like a jerk than a man trying to work through war trauma. Instead of seeing him wrestle with this uncharted territory, we really only see him pine over Paige and become grumpy over her relationship with Dylan (or his lost leg). For the most part I wrote off his short temper, but I think it would have rounded out Riley's character better if there had been a little less pining and a little more inner turmoil that wasn't caused by unrequited love. I completely understand wanting to be correct when writing about PTSD. However, I think the lack of writing about it at all didn’t service his character well.

One other little thing I didn’t like was the fact that Paige and Riley lived together in a book that’s supposed to be Christian Fiction. I get it, it helped build tension and all that but it just didn’t completely sit right with me. I don’t think it would have changed the story much if she had to drive to his place. Maybe then there would have been space to grow Riley’s character a little more instead of reading pages of how much he didn’t want Paige to go out with Dylan. On the other hand, it reads more like a clean adult romance with sprinkles of Christianity thrown in so maybe it works.

Regardless, I enjoyed it. Not sure if I'll look into the other books but we'll see!

I've really enjoyed reading the Summer Harbor books. The connections between the Callahan brother's and the shared history between the characters made it really easy for me to fall back into their lives. This time, Riley Callahan gets his story. After enlisting in the military in order to escape unhappiness at home, he's back in Summer Harbor with an amputated leg and a broken spirit. His longtime best friend Paige is unsure how to handle the changes in Riley, but she knows she wants to be there for him, while he just wants to be able to ignore his feelings for Paige.

I've come to expect sweet, romantic stories, grounded in realistic events from Denise Hunter, and I have to admit, I enjoy them for the escape they provide, as well as the endearing family dynamics that take place throughout the story. This one even has some closure for a couple of secondary characters, so that added an extra layer of satisfaction to the ending.

I appreciate how there is no plot twist that comes from left field just to amp up the action. There are some surprises, yes, but they flow well in the story and add to it, rather than distract. Of course, there is a little bit of stubbornness on Riley's part, but it doesn't feel too off, considering everything that he's been through prior to the story's beginning.

Solid romantic contemporary - I look forward to reading more from Denise Hunter soon!

I received a complimentary copy of this novel, which I chose to review - the thoughts expressed here are my own.

Riley is returning home from Afghanistan with one leg missing below the knee. His pride is shot, feels like half a man and wants desperately to put a great deal of distance between himself and his best friend, Paige, who is the love of his life. All he wants to do is get his prosthesis, get in good enough shape to be independent again and then get the heck out of Summer Harbor for good! Fate has other plans, as circumstances finds him having to recuperate in Paige's home.

Paige is the director of the Perfect Paws Animal Shelter, which has run out of money. She's been given three months to come up with funding or the board of directors will shut it down. She has been best friends with Riley since they were kids, but is completely oblivious to the fact Riley has been in love with her since they were seventeen years old, nor does she know he enlisted in the Marine Corps fifteen months ago, because at the time, he couldn't handle that she was dating his older brother, Beau.

This is a sweet, clean romance with tons of charm and great characters with a lot of heart! I need to back track now and read the first two books in this series about Riley's brothers, Beau and Zac, but this a stand alone book.

Just a Kiss was every bit as good as I thought it would be. I cannot believe this series is over...I don't want to say goodbye to these characters. Maybe that's why I took so long to actually start reading the story, even though I've had the book for months?? ;)

I loved both of the main characters. Riley and his struggles because of the amputation were heart-breaking at times...the pain... I could understand why he felt the things he did and I just wanted things to work out well. Paige and her mother, wow, that made me mad. That's all I'll say.

All in all, I loved Just a Kiss. I definitely recommend this book, and the entire series, if you enjoy romance. The series is definitely a little edgy romance-wise compared to other Christian Fiction, but it wasn't too much for me.

Sigh. The leads lived together through more than half the book, then decided Riley ought to get his own place, because "he's just a man" and can't control himself around Paige. So sensuality was an issue, obviously.

I liked that the leading guy was an amputee. That was unique and something about war that isn't highlighted much at all.

The publisher provided me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much, Smith Publicity Inc.

I think this is my first Christian Contemporary Romance, I’ve been raking my brains out to remember if I have read one before but came up empty. Maybe I have read some before, I just don’t remember them. It happens, right? Anyways, so yes I’m gonna claim this as my first Christian Contemporary Romance. Just A Kiss is the third book in the Summer Harbor Series, but it is a stand alone – which I appreciate a lot. I’m not a huge series fan lately for multitudes of reasons, the number one being: I just don’t have the time to invest in a series now. So when Smith Publicity Inc. contacted me and explained that Just A Kiss can be read on its own, I immediately agreed. But the main reason why I agreed to review a copy is because the male protagonist is a Marine. If you have known me for quite a while, you’ll understand my obsession about marines in books.I don’t really know what is it about marines that I love so much, but I immensely enjoy reading about them. Gahhhh it is so hard to explain. Maybe because they start off as brooding men but definitely has a soft side.

I love stories about best friends turning into lovers. There’s nothing more satisfying than that. I am always such a sucker for these kinds of books, so much so that I have drafted bazillion stories like it, in the hopes of having it published someday. That’s for another time, you are here for my review right? Haha I always get sidetracked. Okay, so on to Just A Kiss. Have you watched Hallmark movies? So for those who aren’t aware of Hallmark movies, these are cutesy, heartwarming, and just ohhh so good and decent if I may add, romance films. Just A Kiss is a Hallmark movie in book form. Am I making any sense? It was cute, heartwarming, so so good and very decent. What more could one possibly ask for? Just A Kiss is the perfect mixture of self-discovery, resilience, regrets, tragedy, self-acceptance, second chances, love and all the emotional excitement that goes with it. I loved how the story was as real as it could get.

In Just A Kiss we follow the story of Riley and Paige, who are best friends. Riley has been harboring feelings for Paige for a long time. While Riley and Paige dance around, refusing to acknowledge what they feel for each other, it is kind of nice to look forward to how all will unfold and how both of them will find out their true feelings for each other, it is as if you feel for them, root for them to end up together once and for all. And when that moment finally arrived, it was nothing short of perfect. I loved how everything unfolded, how they ease into each other’s lives like they were born to do just that. But of course there had to be some setbacks, and I appreciate that it was well played out, there was just the right drama that surrounded it and the perfect resolution to the whole story. It was a feel good at best, and I have found a go-to author for whenever I want to read some heartwarming stories with a good lesson or two.

So if you are a new Denise Hunter fan just like me, or just looking for a good romance, then this book is the answer. I loved how it made me feel, like everything in the world is right again! Can’t wait to read more of her books!

Denise Hunter finishes up her Summer Harbor series with the last Callahan brother's Story. Riley has returned from the Middle East an amputee, unsure of himself and wondering what to do now that he's home. Especially wondering how he's going to face Paige Warren, the woman he's loved since they were teenage best friends. But so much has changed. Then he learned that, due to renovations at his family's house, he is going to be Paige's houseguest until those renos are finished!

Paige tries everything in her power to make Riley's transition home a success, but she hears his nightmares, sees his struggles to cope with his disability and her heart breaks for him. But soon, she begins to feel more for her ' best friend' and tries valiantly to squash those feelings. They've been best friends forever, right?

As these two try to come to terms with their feelings for each other and Riley tries to find his place now with his disability, old feelings come to the front, and they each deal with their own heartaches.

Can they trust each other to understand? Will they both trust God and allow Him to work in their lives?

Denise Hunter has been a favorite of mine for many years. She is a wonderful writer and the spiritual lesson here is profound. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to her next one.

I have been waiting what feels like forever to read this book. It really hasn't been that long but there was so much anticipation after the last book that this book just couldn't come soon enough. I was so happy to finally get to read Riley and Paige's story.

This series is one of my favorites by one of my favorite authors. I have loved each book. I think each book could stand on it's own, but you will love them so much better if you read them in order. Trust me on this.

Poor Riley. I just loved him. Even in his most ornery, pig headed moments, I loved him. The progression of Riley and Paige from friends to more than friends is bumpy and crazy and sometimes ugly but the journey felt real and vulnerable. These characters were fantastic.

There is a feeling of coming home in this book as all the family is around and active in the plot. I loved the sub plot with Riley's aunt. That one has been building through all the books! Resolution feels so good after struggle.

I can't wait to see what's coming next from Denise Hunter. I'll be watching. And waiting. :)
