Pope Pius X's catechism is a rather short book of only 50 pages in which he provides a Roman Catholic understanding of the Christian faith with a question and answer format. The book was issued in 1908, and was reaffirmed by Ratzinger in 2002. The book has three parts dealing with faith, the Ten Commandments and grace. It also lists the most important prayers for Catholics.
The Catholic Church, also known as the Roman Catholic Church, is the world's largest Christian church. Led by the Pope, it defines its mission as spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ, administering the sacraments and exercising charity. The Catholic Church is among the oldest institutions in the world and has played a prominent role in the history of Western civilisation. It teaches that it is the church founded by Jesus Christ, that its bishops are the successors of Christ's apostles and that the Pope is the successor to Saint Peter. Catholic doctrine maintains that the Church is infallible when it dogmatically teaches a doctrine of faith or morals. Catholic worship is centred on the Eucharist in which the Church teaches bread and wine are supernaturally transubstantiated into the body and blood of Christ. The Church holds the Blessed Virgin Mary in special regard. Catholic beliefs concerning Mary include her Immaculate Conception and bodily Assumption at the end of her earthly life.
I would have liked scriptural citation; there were certain statements made that seemed extrabiblical to me. But then, this is a Catholic document, so I should have expected that. There was an interesting discussion of angels and some good thoughts about prayer. Naturally I didn't agree with everything about the saints, justification, church structure & authority, sacraments, etc., but I also disagreed with some of the explanation of the atonement, which surprised me. However, I liked a fair amount of this (especially some of the explanation of the Lord's Prayer), and I would recommend it to my fellow non-Catholics, if only to have a basic understanding of what Catholics teach/believe.
Best short catechism for anyone new/returning to the Faith! Pope St. Pius X does an excellent job in explaining the One True Faith in brief for all to easily understand!
