I'm one of those disgruntled millennials you've heard about on the evening news. I've got a master's degree in Art History, a mountain of student loan debt and no job to show for it.
Wait, scratch that. I track down stolen pieces of art for wealthy clients and then beat whoever stole them to within an inch of their life. Say what you will, but it puts bread on the table.
Something went wrong with this last job of mine, though. I walked in on something I wasn't supposed to see and got murdered by witches. Yeah, real, legit witches. Never saw that one coming, did you? Neither did I, and the only reason I'm writing this is because some doctor working for an ancient secret society decided it would be a good idea to use me as a science experiment.
See, he implanted a new heart in me and saved my life, but it wasn't just any old heart. It was a demon's heart. Nifty, eh?
Anyhow, I'm back and better than ever, except that, now and then, the demon takes over completely and I do awful things. Lose control. But enough about that. This is a story about how I (mostly) rein in the demon's impulsive personality and seek revenge against the coven of witches that tried to kill me. Along the way, I learn a thing or two about this secret society I'm apparently now a member of and find out that there's a lot of shit out there that goes “bump” in the night.
Mandatory Disclaimer: Yeah, look, some people don't like the way I talk. I say words like “fuck” a lot. If you want to take this ride, then you should know there's going to be a whole lot of cussing and violence along the way. And if I'm lucky, there'll be some skin, too.
But, who knows? Maybe you'll like it, you filthy animal.
Raw Power: An Urban Fantasy Novel Demon-Hearted, Book 1 By: Ambrose Ibsen Narrated by: James Foster Lucian is a guy you pay to get things back, especially stolen art. What he is paid to get this time gets him a new heart...that or die. The heart is not just any heart, it's a demon heart and it comes with a membership to the Veiled society. Oh, yeah, fun kick butt fun! Witches, creatures, and Lucian trying to learn to deal with the power and evil of the demon. I loved it! I got hooked on this author with the Afterlife Investigation series and I had these books but hadn't started them. After listening to his other series, I bought the audible for demon hearted especially when I saw the narrator. I have listened to this narrator before and he is great and he showed me I was right, he was wonderful! Awesome voices, emotions, timing, just perfect!
Ordinary bloke gets demon heart-transplant and finds it does more than just pump blood. Plus, he now has a new job, and life has got more complicated.
What I Liked Lucian. Lucian (who doesn't like being called 'Lucy', but had probably better get used to it) rang true for me. He's bright but lazy, making a reasonable living prodding buttock and collecting debts - and, later on, art. He's allowed himself to drift to where he is, without thinking about any of the morality involved - and he's so overconfident you just know he's in for a shock. Shocks. In short, he comes off as a realistic twenty-something lad with more testosterone than brains (and since he's a bright lad, that's a lot of testosterone). However, he has enough self-awareness to make him someone I would actually like to spend time with.
The whole demon-heart business. This is a new idea, or at least a sufficiently new spin on an old idea that it looks new. There's some interesting hints that we'll see more ramifications later on in the series.
Lucian again. Lucian doesn't go from ordinary ass-kicker to supernatural hero overnight; he does what most twenty-something lads would do in that position: he screws up. Repeatedly. It's the testosterone thing again. It can be irritating to watch, but Ibsen made the right decision, I think. Lucian is a more interesting character for being just a bit morally ambiguous, just a bit too laddish for his own good. It's just not realistic for an ordinary person to be given some kind of supernatural power and then to immediately think "With great power comes great responsibility; I must be sensible and mature from now on."
The magic system. We don't actually get much information on the magic system, but Ibsen seems to have some interesting ideas.
What could have been improved Pacing. Apart from a few blips, everything seemed to go a bit too much according to plan. There wasn't that sense of imminent failure and risk that heightens the tension late on in most books.
Character interactions. I've observed before that the best urban fantasy (at least, for me) tends to be where the main character has a team he can bounce off. Where the character is isolated, either because he has no friends, or because his colleagues aren't sharing, it makes the story a bit two-dimensional. I'm hoping that in further books, Ibsen will lighten up and let the other characters have a bit more page time.
Conclusion This is a solid three-star read for me; I can't quite justify giving it four stars, not when I compare it to such authors as Kim Harrison, Faith Hunter, Jim Butcher et al. However, I think Ibsen definitely has the potential to get there. Technical things like pacing can always be sorted out with practice; what Ibsen has is the ability to write an engaging character whom you're actually interested in reading about - and I think that's more difficult to learn.
I've already bought Book 2, Roaring Blood, which has zombies.
Lucian Colt is a freelance collector of debts and items. When one of his richer clients asks him to collect a certain item, he thinks nothing of it. He tracks it down, but what he doesn't expect is a coven of evil witches using the item in a dark magic rite. He intrudes upon the ritual, and is attacked and almost killed. His client, who is actually a member of a secret society policing the supernatural, finds him and takes him to his group, who decide to save him the only way they can: by replacing his damaged heart with that of the demon they slew, and who's heart they had available. This has the effect of completely healing Lucian. Unfortunately, during the new moon, the Demon in that heart takes over his body, and goes walkabout, causing havoc! Lucian tries to gain control, and use the powers he has gained for good, all while teamed with a group of magic users as they try and track down the witches coven and stop their plans. The story is is full of interesting characters, and their motivations are hidden quite often. The action is fast paced, and you wont be able to stop listening. James Foster, who is one of my favorite narrators because of his range of voices, does a great job bring all the characters and the story to life. Any fan of urban fantasy will enjoy this story.
If you are anything like me and continue to do something that I have been told since I was a child not to do. Judging a book by its cover, that is. I do it all the time. The cover is the first thing that has a chance to grab my attention for a new book. The cover for Raw Power got me jacked. Looks like it is going to be an epic urban fantasy paranormal adventure! Grabbed my attention, did it yours?
Then there is the disclaimer about the constant use of the “f” word and other profanity. I am up for it as always. However, if you are going to have a disclaimer like that you better hold up your end of the bargain. This is the one area I felt like Raw Power let me down. Now maybe I have been so desensitized to swearing and violence, and that is why I didn’t notice anything that warranted this warning.
Raw Power has a very interesting storyline. Lucian Colt is a young guy making a living by beating people up, until he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Walking in on a coven of witches doing something evil. Of course they kill him. Those that found him thought it would be a good idea to transplant his heart with that of a demon. Thus turning him into, for lack of a better term, split personality. Colt finds that along with a demon’s heart, comes its soul. Constantly trying to take over the flesh to wreak havoc in the world of the mortals.
Those that did the unconventional heart transplant are also members of an ancient secret society of, again I have no better words, witch hunters. That happen to embrace the world of magic and occult as well. Now Colt and his new friends are off to destroy the plans of the coven of witches that enabled this all to happen in the first place.
The ideas that Ambrose Ibsen has in Raw Power are original. Meaning I haven’t run into them before. The characters were fine. Nothing stuck out to me good or bad. The story was easy to digest and entertaining. For me the only memorable part was the idea behind the demon heart transplant, I wanted more from hell, I guess. I will be seeking out the next book in the series as I am sure there is much more to come.
Besides that good looking cover that I mentioned above, another thing that drew me to Raw Power. Was James Foster, I pretty much want to listen to everything he says. There is just something about his voice. That is. So. Normal. I. Love. It. Foster again flawlessly delivers every line of this book and breathes a life into it that, honestly, it needed. Sorry still feeling burned about the lack of swearing and extreme violence. But only because I was warned about it. If you haven’t experienced the Foster, you really should and if you have, then you know what I am talking about.

I enjoyed this book. I felt like there was a lot left unanswered and the flow of the book seemed choppy to me. I feel like the book is a "not-as-good" version of The Dresden Files and Hounded. No disrespect to the author, it just left something missing for me.
Felt like there were gaps in character development, demon development, plot, and twists. I feel like the F-bomb was overused too, but if I had a demon heart put in my body I would probably use the F-bomb a lot too.
I will hopefully get to book 2 and see where the series is headed, but for now I will go with another series and see where that leads.
A good read.James Foster voices Lucian and everyone nicely.Lucian tracks down art for a living. If he has to beat someone up to get it...all the better. Now something has gone wrong and he is murdered by witches and taken over ny a demon. Can he control what he's become? I was given this book free for an honest review.
Writing style was good and found to be a quick read. Enjoyed the personalities of the characters but wanted a little more background I guess. I did enjoy the story line though.
Wow. This was a great book. I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I started this book, but it was non-stop action until the end. This story did not have any sex. There was plenty of violence but nothing too graphic. There was no cliffhanger. Lucian is kind of a jerk. I won't lie and say he's super cool because he's not. He's basically a thug that "repossesses" items for the uber rich. He's just looking for a fast buck and really doesn't care much about the whys or wherefores. He just wants the payday. Then the demon heart happened. The next thing Lucian knew, he was thrown into an A-Team situation where he had the temperament of a spoiled prom queen and the power of... well... a demon. Not sure that's a good idea, but the witch coven that is super evil is sacrificing children to work their magic. It's up to Lucian and his Scorpion-like team to stop their end game. By the end of the book, I got to liking Lucian a little better. That's good writing right there. The author took a character from slug to hero in two hundred pages. I am looking forward to the next book, Roaring Blood, as it is waiting for me in my TBR pile.
Quickly, I'd like to address the narrator. Sometimes you get really crappy narrators that can't fit their character no matter what. Not this guy. His spin on Lucian Colt was awesome. He captured Lucian's whiny, spoiled attitude and then helped him along his way to self-realization and becoming a better guy. Super narrator. I'll listen to him again, no questions asked!
Great characters. Good story. Nice start to a new series.
The story is told from Lucian Colt or Lucy's point of view. His life changes when he is brought back to life with a demon heart. Not just any demon, a big baddie, the Demon of War. What happens during his "blackouts". Is he still himself? Can you become a better person after being given a demon heart? Now he's working for The Veiled Order. The people who gave him his new heart. And they have a mission.
James Foster did a fantastic job with the narration. His voices that he uses while narrating are fantastic. He makes the narration really fun with the sarcastic tones he uses. He makes the story and the characters come to life. It is always a bonus when he is narrating a book.
Looking forward to the next book, especially if James Foster is narrating.

Actual rating 4.5 stars! *I apologize for taking so long to get through this book. I had to take a break when my father passed away and have just gotten back to reading.
I love paranormal stories, and all kinds of paranormal creatures. I'm also a sucker for characters who are hunters of these creatures. Whether it be a vampire hunter, monster hunter, or demon hunter. In this story, our main character is killed by witches and finds himself alive again but with a demon heart beating inside his chest. He then becomes a hunter of sorts, while learning how to live with this demon part of himself. The narrator of the audiobook was James Foster. He is a very talented voice actor and really brought the story to life. I highly recommend the audiobook version to anyone who is interested in this book! This book was an awesome start to this new series and I really enjoyed it. I fully intend to continue on with the next installment of the series.

Raw Power. Boy they named this one right. What would you do with the heart of a Demon inside your body, and not just your ordinary run of the mill demon, No, this one had to be the Demon of War. And he was one Bad Ass Dude.
I regress. Ambrose Ibsen did a wonderful job at creating the characters in this tale. It has a lot of potential down the long run. Yes there is a few cuss words, but hey, we all use them at one time or another, so take it with a grain of salt and get over it.
I read so many of this genre, that it was a breathe of fresh air when I got into this one. One regret was there were not that many of the other side in this one. Seemed to be a bunch of Witches and that was it. Hopefully more creatures will arise in the next installment.

Lucien is a repo man. He retrieves valuable objects for his customers. While looking for a valuable artifact he unwittingly barged in on a coven of witches using the artifact in a spell. Things did not go well for Lucien. Upon waking up he discovers he has been given a demon’s heart to save his life. He also learns he is now a member of the Veiled Order. A bit far-fetched, but it is horror story after all. The Veiled Order is a group of paranormals recruited and organized to “protect humanity from what dwells in the beyond”. Lucien is introduced to his new crew; Cubo the lead, Fire-Joe and Isabella the magician. Their first mission was to take down the coven of witches that earlier terminated Lucien. Throughout the story Lucien learns how to control his demon, or not. He also learns how to interact with people and ultimately how to be a friend. Not too bad. Three.point.five for a fine effort.
Most modern fantasy novels are set in major cities, but most aren't set in Detroit. If you've ever been there, it makes a weird sort of sense that the unusual would occur there. Thumbs up on the setting. The characters are interesting, and I enjoyed them. The first person narrative was a little limiting, but the author made it work. The only criticism that I have is that for someone who came from a suburban background and has a master's in art, the main character's personality and style of speaking doesn't seem to match very well. He is supposed to be rough but sensitive, and yet it takes a Damon's heart to make him consider how he had hurt people in the past. Overall, the author did okay with it, it was just a bit of a stretch. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
The author has an interesting take on the supernatural world.
This book is about demons, witches, and witch hunters - secret society. The plot was good, as well as the characters, the good and bad ones.
Lucian Colt, the main lead, has a job to do and he does it. He finds stolen art items and returns the item back to its owner, while teaching the thieves a lesson, until he is in the wrong place at the wrong time. Things don't go as planned and Lucian Colt finds himself with a "New Heart" and a whole bunch of problems.
I liked the sarcasm through out the story: "I was alive and pissed off, probably what a new born baby feels like".
James Foster has a nice 'matter of fact" reading voice and he did really well with the narration. .

I was pleasantly surprised to read this book. The premise was different and the characters were well etched. An art thief with the heart of a demon, fighting alongside a secret society (which gave him the demon heart in the first place)to save the world from a coven of witches. It could have gone wrong in so many levels, but it did not. I felt that the author could have told us more about the demon and also played out the team dynamics. Perhaps the later books are going to have that in more detail. A good read.
Let me start by saying that I really enjoyed the book and look forward to seeing what lies over the horizon for Lucian and crew. I am anticipating the fleshing out of the characters, but was really pleased with how quickly the author got you engaged, and minimized downtime between action sequences. All in all a solid effort and a addition to my list of writers to watch for.
Like a pretty woman in a room full of beautiful women.
I enjoy urban fantasy. This first-in-a-series novel unfolds rapidly. I thought that the withholding of information from the main character was heavy handed. With so much at stake, there would be no reason for this.
I liked the characters, magic, and conflict the main character just face. Nice read. Looking forward to the sequel.
Violent, rude, completely un-PC & generally a thug - that is the main character. I enjoyed this mainly because of how he wakes up to how awful a human being he is after being implanted with a demon's heart. The (snicker) soul searching is minimal, but he starts trying. Can't wait for the next book in this series.
This was an enjoyable listen. The narration was excellent and the book was well paced. The main character is an unlikable kind of person that comes to realize that fact as he battles the Demon inside himself. This was an good start to a series.

This was one hell of a story. Raw Power is simply magic. Hard brash and in your face. Lucian "lightning Lucy" Colt finds himself 're-evaluating his life and views when he sees what happens when the demon in him takes hold of control. I loved it and couldn't put it down. I really want to see more of Lucian and his team. Brilliant writing. Thank you!
I'd recommend this book to fans of the Iron Druid. Ok this was pretty cool. Smart ass, snarky main character is killed by witches and is installed his very own Demon heart by a mysterious organization.
Give this a whirl really witty dialogue and one liners i actually chuckled out loud a few times,
I found the MC lack of any type of interest on the how, why, and other details of his becoming 'Demon-Hearted'. And while he seems the type to try to go with the flow he is acting entirely to Zen for his personality type.
Over all a good read was a little slow on the development of the characters. Hopefully the next book will shed some more light on the main character. The ending should had been a little more exciting.
If Sandman Slim and Yancy Lazarus had a love child
It would be Lucy. A quick plot with interesting characters makes for a great read. I'm looking forward to the next two books to see if Mr. Ibsen can keep up this pace.
The world building in this book is good. The problem is the lead character is not very interesting. He is a semi apologetic jerk but didn't make we want to read more
