**I received a free eARC from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review**

Every year an elite school selects fourteen gifted students, and an ordinary one who is chosen at random, to enroll. This lucky student is Makoto Naegi, who, after the welcome ceremony, realizes he might not be so lucky after all.

The school's principal, a robot teddy bear called Monokuma, tells the students that the only way to graduate and leave the school is to kill another student. But even more rules are made up along the way, the murderer must not only kill a student, but get away with it. In order to do this, they must face a trial, where all the other students have to prove who's guilty. If the right person is found guilty, they're killed by the principal, if not, they get to graduate and the ones being killed are the other students.

Man, I really enjoyed reading this.

I found the story to be very unpredictable, I couldn't tell who the murderers were. And the ways the students are killed, especially by the principal, are very messed up and crazy. Also, at the end of each chapter, there's like a little "countdown", showing how many students are still alive and who they are.

I really liked most of the students (But omg what's with that annoying fanboy?! Creepy as hell), although some of their gifts are ridiculous, to be honest... I loved that though. The only one that's not revealed is Kirigiri's, who is a very badass girl with an incredible style, by the way. I don't know if I should find her suspicious or if I should be rooting for her, but I like her.

I also laughed while reading this. There's a student who's chosen for her strength or something like that, and I'm sure we all think she's a guy, until one day she shows up wearing a skirt and that's when you start to ask yourself if she might actually be a girl. That's what I get for not paying attention to their names in the beginning... But hey! We're not the only ones making that mistake.

( Read from right to left )

And things start to get even more interesting, since it might be possible that these students have an audience who is watching everything!

Can't wait to read the next volume :) and now I also want to play the video game so baaad!! ♥

Danganronpa Volume 1 by Spike Chunsoft

I absolutely adored Danganronpa as a video game. I didn't play it myself, but I've watched the first game fully through gaming videos on youtube. It was such a unique and creepy concept. I couldn't stop watching. I know there is a second game and also an anime, but I haven't tried those (yet). Now, there is manga coming out. This first volume was really good. It didn't differ much (if at all) from the video game, but it still made me laugh and tear up a bit. It's been a while since I experienced the game, so it was nice to be reunited with all of these characters and our favourite bear. Honestly, if you're into dystopian books, I think you should give this manga a try. It's about all of these special teenagers trying to survive in a school building they can't get out of. The only way to 'graduate' is to kill one of the others and don't get caught. It's harder than it sounds, but so good.

I've tried manga about half a dozen times. Normally, I would never rule out a genre for myself. I want to stay open-minded, but I've yet to find any manga that really works for me. I was tempted to give it two stars, but this might have been the best I've read. The concept was definitely compelling, and I actually cared about the characters, but...I don't know. There always seems to be a "but" with manga. I'll keep trying. Just not anytime soon.

I was told that Danganronpa manga sucks and that the game and even anime is great and guess what? I've enjoyed the manga adaptation!

The plot is really simple. 15 students join Hope's Peak Academy, an elite highs school for talented kids. Every student excels in something and we have the ultimate baseball player, the ultimate fashionista, the ultimate pop idol, etc. here. The only exception is Makoto Naegi, our main character, who's just a regular kid.

All the kids got trapped in the school by evil robot teddy bear Monokuma and are forced to play his sick game - if you want out you have to kill someone and get away with it. When the body is found there is a trial and remaining students have to find out who is the murderer. If they manage to find the culprit, he/she gets killed by Monokuma. But if their guess is wrong, everyone gets killed except for the murderer who's free to go.

The first volume basically just sets the ground rules and introduces the characters but it was fun. Will be back for more for sure and considering buying the game.

4/10/20--
My initial review of just this volume is below, but I just finished the full series and wanted to do a quick review of it.

TL,DR: Game >>> Anime >>>>>>>> Manga

The Danganronpa franchise is one of my favorite franchises of all time. The games are all brilliant and have gotten me obsessed to extreme levels only seen by permanent, long-lasting favorite pieces of media in my life. Harry Potter, The Genius, The Mole, KPop... Danganronpa.

Danganronpa (Trigger Happy Havoc) is a BRILLIANT story, and it's told best via video game. The anime adaptation is a decent adaptation, but the manga adaptation OF THE ANIME is a step too far away from the source material. A game that takes hours and hours of gameplay already felt a bit squished into 13 half hour anime episodes. It's further compacted into 4, yes FOUR rather short manga volumes. Let me remind you-- the game is divided into SIX chapters. That's not even a volume per chapter. Ridiculous.

I've given each volume 3 or 3.5/5 stars, and that's almost entirely because of the story itself, because the manga format it's being told in simply doesn't do it justice. I said this in the original review, but please play the game(s) rather than reading this, and if you absolutely do NOT want to play the game, at least watch the anime instead of reading this. Brilliant twists and turns deserve time to be experienced and appreciated, not glossed over because of how compact the story needed to be to fit into only 4 (!!!!) manga volumes.

---
7/24/19--

OG story rating-- 11/5
Adaptation as a manga-- 3.5/5
I read this volume of the manga and also watched the corresponding anime episodes and can say without a doubt that the anime is the much better adaptation of the original video game. That may change with future volumes, but given the nature of the video game, both adaptations had to push a few things together and cobble together some things, and it didn't work super well in the manga. It had to jump around a bit and that wasn't always handled very tactfully. So, if you're interested in the *story* of Danganronpa, but don't want to put all the time into the game, I'd say:
1. seriously, give the game a try
2. if you're *really* set on not playing the game, go for the anime

I enjoyed the manga because of how much I love Danganronpa, but I think someone unfamiliar with the story would find it a bit difficult to follow because of how much information is packed into this first volume and how it jumps around a bit.

Really not sure what rating I should give this, because I like the story (obviously, I'm obsessed with Danganronpa) but I don't *love* the adaptation of it. Maybe somewhere in the high 3/5 range? idk.

I haven't read that many manga before, but this one was a really fun read...as fun as horror can be anyway!

This manga series and the video game is my 14 year old daughter's newest obsession. I have to admit that I wouldn't have picked this up on my own, but she wanted to read it with me so we're going to work our way through the 4 volumes.

It's set in a school setting, always a favorite of mine, but in this school the only way you get to leave is to murder another student. We start off the story following Makoto, an ordinary student chosen by lottery to attend this school that usually only the elite can attend. He finds out that the other students are really strange, but not stranger than the robot teddy bear principal!

It's a fun, fast-paced story perfect for YA horror readers.

Danganronpa comes in three media forms: Video games, Manga, and Anime. I think the games came before the manga and the manga before the anime. I played the first and second games and absolutely loved them. The third one? It's in a different dimension, I won't accept anything else.

Anyway, in anticipation for the third game to go on sale, I read this manga.

It's essentially follows the same, well, everything as the first game. Although, I probably should have assumed that would be the case. The anime was basically the same exact thing as well, even including the same artwork and video clips as the game. The anime was mostly just clips from the video game.

So, that's why I gave it a three. This story is better off as a video game, I think. If you don't like video games, you really should try giving this one a shot. It's a visual novel, so it's mostly reading, some walking, and some puzzles (but you can use a walk-through if you want to get through it quicker).

not as good as the game or even the anime adaptation, but i do appreciate how they changed a few things to make the story more interesting and not just going through the same exact plot for the third time. suuuuuper fast paced. i love danganronpa and definitely plan to continue reading the other volumes of this manga adaptation.

Chronique complète :
https://sunread26.wordpress.com/2023/...

Extrait :

This book was so thrilling and exciting. The characters in a killing game and having a trial to find out "who dun it!" was so fantastic. I knew this book would be a good book, but for it to be this awesome really amazes me.

The game of 15 high school aged students forced to kill each other is very original. The thought and horror of the fact that one of your very own friends killed another is rather appalling. If you don't kill another, you can't leave the school and will be trapped there for the rest of your life. If you kill someone, you will be let free. Of course, you won't just be let free instantly. You have to go through a trial.

The trial was very intricate. Although I guessed who the murderer of that student was, it still was quite the thrill to see what all happened. In the trail, the murderer, otherwise known as the blackened, will be fighting against all of the other students. As a quote, from our mascot, Monokuma, right before the trail "Let's begin with a basic explanation of the class trial! So, your votes will determine the results. If you can figure out 'whodunnit' then only they will receive punishment. But if you pick the wrong one... Then I'll punish everyone besides the blackened, and the one that deceived everyone else will graduate!" It's pretty tense for our characters.

Speaking of which, the characters all have their own amazing personalities. They are very interesting and I can't wait to see more of them. Although I already hate Hifumi and want him to die, Hina, Taka, and Chihiro seem like great people. They all have their Ultimates, granting them to go to Hope's Peak Academy. I haven't found out Kyoko's Ultimate yet, but I'm sure it will be amazing. Their Ultimates are their talents. Whatever their Ultimate is, they are the best at that. The only exception to this is Makoto, our main protagonist. He is not lucky at all, but he got in the school out of luck of the draw. It was quite amazing, actually. With a talentless person getting in, I wonder what kind of punishment he'll have if he kills someone.

The punishment so far was really brutal which is good for a book like this. I was just slightly surprised by this fact is all. It was pretty brutal for a story of this kind. I thought it would be just a normal execution. They used their own talents as weapons against them to kill them. That was brutal. For example, (spoilers) Kawata's death was pretty brutal. Getting hit multiple times with baseballs to his face. Those practice machines hurt if you get hit by one. Machinegunning baseballs has got to hurt a lot.

I knew this book would be fantastic when I started it, and I don't regret reading it at all. I can't wait to learn more about the characters and find out the greater mysteries of Hope's Peak Academy.

Pierwsza i druga sprawa TO SPEEDRUN.

Danganronpa was astonishing!!! I cannot believe I didn't join the fandom earlier. *sniff*

Junko was my favorite character at the start and when she 'died' I was pretty bummed out. BUT THEN she came back as a psychotic murderer with multiple personas...

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/1dn37cw3ccs/ma...

The voice actor for Naegi is the same person that voiced Kirito from SAO and Eren from Attack On Titans in the animation! :[)

I really want to read v2 but Hay Thi said it costs about $60 ;-;

AND THEN THERE'S ALSO 'ULTRA DESPAIR GIRLS', 'DESPAIR', 'FUTURE ARC', 'HOPE ARC' AND FINALLY 'DANGANRONPA 3'!

It's going to take so long to finish the series...

This anime is basically 'Saw' and 'Escape the Night' combined and then animated. -_- And I loved it hehe.

Um, I think I have a problem...

Okay, this graphic novel is too much fun! DANGANRONPA is the story of 15 kids who get selected to go to Hope's Peak through a lotto. They are the best of the best. We have the best baseball star, the best swimmer, the best computer programmer, etc etc. They think they have really made it in this cool new school... but then they meet their new robot teddy bear principal, Monokuma. And he has just informed them the only way to graduate is to kill a student, not get caught, and outsmart the others in the trial of the victim. WHAT!? You read that right! It's such a blast, the characters are compelling, Monokuma is a sadistic treat of a characters, and I cannot wait for more in this series! We started with 15 and this first volume leaves us with 12...

This book is sooooo dark and full of despair (hehe). A seemingly hopeful school with bright youth corrupted into a school of murder, trials and deception. This novel was only rated at four stars due to it being in solid black in white, which is not a huge negative. The colour- or lack there of is just personal preference, being only two solid, polar opposait colours makes it difficult for me to read (and distinguish words from illustrations).

Spoilers ahead.

Recap:

Within this volume there are three murders. Sayaka Maizono stabbed by Leon Kuwata- who is later executed in his trial but being beaten to death with baseballs. Junko Enoshima is murdered by spiked stakes from agitating Monokuma and lastly, Chihiro Fujisaki. 4/5☆

this book was surprisingly good! i heard friend say that it wasn’t a good read but i read it anyway, though keep in mind that i haven’t played any of the danganronpa games or seen the anime yet so i may be biased idk? ʅ(•.•)ʃ after reading this i definitely plan on playing some of the danganronpa games though!

the book was a very fun experience to read and it contained a lot of twists that i didn’t expect and ended on a cliffhanger \:< though i can’t blame the writers as it is a series so i guess they had to but i’m still annoyed bc i can’t read the next one until i get more money ∑(゚Д゚) but that’s a me problem and if you have £10 extra then you shouldn’t have to worry about that (°▽°)

Danganronpa: The Animation - Volume 1 by Takashi Tsukimi was the first installment of the Danganronpa Manga Series, and follows 15 "Ultimate" High School Students as they are trapped at Hope's Peak Academy. They have to figure out how to survive in this school, while also being told that they may be freed if they can kill another student AND not get caught within the class trial. I had played the game before going into this manga, so I knew what to expect, but it felt a little too faced paced for what all was happening. However, I loved the art style, and I think that this was a fantastic introduction to my first manga.

I've played all three main games (and Ultimate Despair Girls) before reading the manga, so I was already a fan of the series. I have no idea if this influences how I enjoyed it; maybe if I'd read it before pouring my soul into the games, I would've had different thoughts.

What I loved about the games was the interactivity and really getting to know the cast. Of course, this is a bit lost in the manga, but I still thought it was well illustrated, fun, and darkly bizarre! The characters are a blast, the story is captivating, and the cases are creative. I read it while listening to the remix OST. Do not regret at all. Recommended for folks who have a high absurdity threshold*, lol

*Absurdity threshold: Well, it's a whodunnit about a bunch of highly gifted ("ultimate") students trapped in a school with a killer teddy bear, lol. I would recommend it only if this kind of premise appeals to you.

Seeing recreations of the sprites and the cut scene art was so weird since they looked traced. I’m also not a fan of the art style. Maybe I’m biased because the original style is too iconic.

There was no subtlety in the case and the evidence. Even if I didn’t already know what was going to happen, this is still a poor adaption. Also, I feel nothing with the characters since in this version, we don’t learn anything about the cast and the location since we don’t have that game mechanic. I also feel none of the suspense and tension that the game gave me. The only reason that I’m giving it two stars is because it wasn’t atrocious; I’m just incredibly indifferent about it.

If you took Battle Royale and mixed it with Clue, it would come out kinda like this. High schoolers killing each other with a murder mystery vibe. The bizarre overlord character, Monokuma, gives it a goofy, silly edge. I enjoyed this more than the tv series because I thought the animation was so close to the source material, that it left much to be desired [this franchise started as a video game]. However, the art in this is pretty good.
