Lovely Lane #2

The Children Of Lovely Lane

Rate this book

The second book in the Lovely Lane series from Nadine Dorries.

Lily hates the sound of children playing - the ceaseless shouting and laughter and kicking of balls to and fro in the street outside the rough Liverpool tenement where she lives. Somehow those innocent voices seem to make a mockery of her existence - working in a dockside processing plant by day, caring for her younger siblings during her every hour off.

There is a boy who would like to court her, but Lily is too ashamed of where she lives to encourage him. And always she is haunted by fear for her sickly four-year-old brother, Joe. When tragedy strikes, will the nurses in St Angelus Hospital - otherwise known as the Angels of Lovely Lane - be able to save the day?

Emily loves training her nurses and that's why she doesn't want to become the assistant matron at St Angelus. This means there's a vacancy for the function. When the experienced Miss Van Gilder is being hired Emily knows the hospital has a problem. Miss Van Gilder is too strict, she doesn't care about the patients and doesn't seem to have any empathy. There's also something strange going on with her and Emily and her friends need to discover what it is before she manages to ruin everything they've worked so hard for in the hospital over the years.

Emily's student nurses are now in their second year. Dana, Victoria, Pammy and Beth are trying to cope with miss van Gilder's tyranny. Dana works with children and there's one boy she likes in particular, Joe. He has severe lung problems and is being taken care of by his sister Lily. Lily knows her brother is really sick, but miss Van Gilder is against his admission. She puts the patients of St Angelus at risk and what will happen if she gets more power when the hospital board would approve her plans? If she gets her way many people will lose their jobs and Miss van Gilder doesn't care what the consequences of her actions are as long as she gets her way, can she be stopped?

The Children of Lovely Lane is a fantastic book. Nadine Dorries writes about the nurses, doctors, household staff, porters and patients of St Angelus and they're equally fascinating. There is so much going on in the busy hospital and I loved reading about the characters of The Angels of Lovely Lane again. The nurses are all from different backgrounds, which makes them interesting to read about. I enjoyed getting to know more about both their love lives and their work. I smiled when they were happy and felt sad when they weren't. I always like it when I feel so involved.

It was great to read about Emily again. She keeps being strong, dependable and sweet and she always helps everyone with their problems. That makes her such a lovely character and she instantly found a way into my heart. She represents everything that's good in the hospital while Miss Van Gilder is the exact opposite. Miss Van Gilder is malicious and cunning and getting to know more about her plans kept me on the edge of my seat. I hated her from the start and that feeling only grew because of the way she treats little Joe. Lily is a kindhearted person and Joe is the most precious thing she has. She's incredibly strong and I shed quite a few tears reading about their difficult life that miss Van Gilder threatens to make even harder. The characters of The Children of Lovely Lane all greatly impressed me and I love it when a book evokes many strong emotions.

The Children of Lovely Lane is a multilayered book and Nadine Dorries is a very skilled writer. She weaves her parts, the stories of many fabulous characters, together into a beautiful whole and the result is mind-blowing. I love her gorgeous sentences and sensational plotlines. The story is filled with surprising twists and turns. St Angelus is a special place that's being held together by admirable people. The fifties are a time of change and Nadine Dorries has clearly done her research. It was fun to learn about the start of the NHS and to see how slowly the country starts to thrive again after the challenging years of the Second World War. The Lovely Lane series is a brilliant combination of interesting history, an extraordinary setting and characters with big hearts. I highly recommend this amazing story.

Ever since I read The Angels Of Lovely Lane, I couldn't wait to see what happened next. For me that one and this book stuck in my mind, I am not sure if it is the characters, the storyline or the author's words but it has really touched my heart.
After reading the first couple of chapters, I was so pleased to see the familiar characters and places. The nurses of St Angelus are thriving in their careers and everyone is routing for them to do well. (I know I was!) I loved Sister Therese, she is such a unique character. While she is representing God and his views, she is also trying to help those's in need as well. She even has a few tricks up her sleeve to do so. (You will see what I mean when you read it!)
There are quite a few changes happening at St Angelus, not all of them are good. Especially when a new assistant matron is hired and she is about to make all of the staff's lives harder than they need to be. The St Angelus girls (Dana, Victoria, Pammy and Beth) are just the way I remember them from the first book. All different, all have their own hardships and stories that lead them to St Angelus but it is those reasons that make them such likeable and passionate characters to read about.
This book is no different in that sense, although along with their stories is a couple of others now as well. Each heartbreaking and tragic yet it is the people who help them when they need it most, they are the ones who show them what real decent human beings are like.
I have already said how much I loved Sister Therese but I loved all the main character. Each one is unique in their own way and to me, I could imagine and picture them as real life people and not just characters in a book.
The Children Of Lovely Lane is simply amazing. I really don't think any words I use will do the book justice. Although I will say you have to read it, it will warm your warm and make you see the real angels in the world.
If I had to sum this book up in three words, they would be Captivating, Phenomenal and Touching.

This is the 2nd book in the series and it introduced some new characters who fitted in well. Again it had many emotional moments especially in St Angelus hospital. I imagine there will be a third book too.

Another amazing book from the lovely lane series by Nadine Dorries.
This story starts slowly but gathers pace after a few chapters. It has quite a few strands, with different characters which adds to the feel of the book. I loved catching up with the angels of lovely lane, and the community of St. Angelis hospital. The story has plenty of real emotion and drama, tragedy and tender moments when everyone pulls together. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this fantastic series, The Mothers of Lovely Lane.

This was such a lovely sequel to the Angels of Lovely lane, we get to see more of the "Angels" their stories, their lives and loves, we also get to meet new characters too, the Lancashire family, little Joe and his sister Lily.
Then there is the sinister Miss Van Gilder, she has joined the team but is set on turning the hospital system and thereby the future of St. Angelus on its head.
Can Emily Haycock and her sidekicks find out more about what it is that Gilder is hiding and save everyone's jobs?
Time is running out as her pervasive presence is upsetting both workers and patients alike.
I adore this series, a wonderful hospital saga with great characters the reader grows to care about.

The Children of Lovely Lane written by the very talented Nadine Dorries was another wonderful read in this very addictive series. With this book the four girls which we met in the last book The Angels of Lovely Lane namely Dana, Pammy, Victoria and Beth are enjoying their time at St Angelus, and their nursing training is starting to take shape so well they have now been released on the wards which meant as a reader we got to know the patients who came in contact with this wonderful group of friends who supported each other when they were needed or simply held their hand when their hearts were breaking.
Each girl is settled well but when Sister Emily Haycock is given the chance to employ an assistant matron she does not realise that she is about to start a war within the wards of St Angelus Hospital as the new Assistant Matron decides the hospital is not being run quite to her standard. But as always there are a few secrets which come to light and this is when the story really gets interesting.
This book for me told the story not only of the nursing staff on St Angelus but the poor of Liverpool and their lives on Clare Cottages was really brought to light. Mix that in with alcoholism and this is one storyline which will not only pull at the heart strings truly pull them out. Yet though there was sadness through this book, the friendship was strong in Clare Cottages and the one thing which was made sure each neighbour looked after each other no matter when they could hardly feed themselves. There was so much human kindness through this book and I loved reading how one Nun named Sister Therese took on everyone in the chapel and her way of controlling the people of Liverpool was legendary, no matter if they were rich or poor she knew how to take care of those in need.
There was so much I loved about this book, as from the first page I was soon involved in the lives of the many characters who filled the pages which made this book extra special. This book for me held every emotion from fear to loneliness from passion to cruelty this book held it all. The comedy moments were shoulder shaking funny, I honestly laughed so hard the tears poured from my eyes, yet within a few pages the tears could be pouring again but for a totally separate emotion.
The Children of Lovely Lane written by the very talented is one book which was based in and around the streets of Liverpool, how nursing skills and medical techniques changed through the years. I loved each wonderful page of it and for that reason alone I am happy to recommend this excellent read to anyone who loves to read books which are based on historical facts yet filled with characters which were so real I felt I knew them personally.

O matulu! To wszystko tutaj dostałam.

I really enjoyed this book, Nadine Dorries has a knack for introducing characters that you grow to love so quickly and you just want to fight for them but then there is always a tragedy.

Excellent book, highly recommeded. Great insite into the start of the NHS within a hospital setting as well, always like to learn whilst I read.

Looking forward to the next one

Przeżywają radości i smutki, a każdy nowy pacjent to kolejne wyzwanie.

Radość z pracy i równowaga w szpitalu St. Angelus zostaje jednak mocno zachwiana, gdy na stanowisko drugiej przełożonej pielęgniarek zostaje zatrudniona tajemnicza panna van Gilder.

I enjoyed this book just as much as I enjoyed the first in the series. Now Emily has graduated from nursing school and has worked her way up to be Director of the Student Nurses. She works all day and in the evening, she visits her step-father who has dementia. She gets along with the Matron but they aren't especially friends by any means. We again meet some of the student nurses, Victoria who is from a wealthy family but is intent on becoming a nurse, Pammy who comes from a poorer neighborhood and a loving stable family. Dana is in love with a young doctor but she is ashamed of her poor Irish background. The Matron has decided to hire a new assistant matron and Emily is part of the interviewing panel. But the woman who the independent society hire is the last person either Emily nor Dr. Gaskell would have chosen. Matron initially thinks it was the right choice but the new Assistant Matron creates friction wherever she goes and has different plans for the well run hospital that hires many of the women who's husbands were lost in the war or are unable to work. The 'underground mafia' of staff believe she has something to hide and they are intent on finding what it is. Looking forward to reading the next in the series.

"Dzieci z Lovely Lane" to druga część serii "Pielęgniarki" autorstwa Nadine Dorries.

This was the second in the Lovely Lane seres, and to be honest I found it somewhat long winded and boring in many places. There were several sections where I found myself rolling my eyes and wondering if this wasn’t perhaps a harlequin romance I was reading. I’m not fond of so many points of view with these changing every few paragraphs depending on what’s happening. It makes the story feel scattered. However I did stick it out til the end. The death of the antagonist toward the end was very convenient, and not believable at all. Although I bought the third book in the series for a loonie on Kindle, I’m not even sure I’ll read it, at least not until my eye muscles have had a chance to recover from all the rolling. Disappointing actually after an initially promising first book of the series.

The 2nd book in the Lovely Lane series. This book concentrates on children and young people in the dock area of Liverpool. Relationships begin and some end. There is new life and premature death. A new assistant matron arrives with something illegal in mind and she could end the jobs of all the domestics employed at St Angelus. It will take a bit of investigation to thwart her, and the employees from domestic helpers to experienced doctors will have to band together if things are to remain as they are.
A good read, but a little slower at the start compared to the first book. However, enough drama to have me searching for the third in the series......

Nursing in the 1950’s

The second book in this series. I enjoyed the characters and how nurses’ training as well as medical practices have changed Nd developed over the decades. The training in the USA must have been more progressive in that many nurses were married, had families and worked. Descriptions of living conditions post WW II still amaze me. We had indoor plumbing “back then” that wasn’t shared between apartments. Grew up reading Cherry Ames books. This is like a rewind for me.
