Tryggve Mettinger's much-praised work analyzes the major names for God in the Old Testament to trace, through the many confrontations and challenges of individuals and groups that mark Israel's story, the historical development of Israel's conception of God.
A fantastic overview on the origins of the name YHWH, as well as the cultures behind the name, and what God would have meant to each culture which encountered God. Mettinger demonstrates fantastic research abilities, and sets aside his biases.
Very interesting and adds some insight into biblical names throughout the Bible. You’ll find yourself examining names as you study your bible. Goes deep into original languages but you don’t have to be multilingual. Also offers insight on Job that answers many questions I haven’t seen in other commentaries.
