Collects both the WAR WITHIN and WAR WITHIN: DARK AGES series. In this 12-part story, four million years before the Transformers arrived on Earth, civil war rocks their home world of Cybertron, and Optimus Prime faces his first-and greatest-challenge. But before he can deal with the Decepticons, the new Autobot leader must look within, and decide if Cybertron is worth saving at all!
Simon Christopher Francis Furman is a British comic book writer who is best known for his work on Hasbro/Tomy's Transformers franchise, starting with writing Marvel's initial comic book to promote the toyline worldwide, as well as foundations for both Dreamwave Production's and IDW Publishing's takes on the Generation 1 minifranchise.
IDW collection of two six-part minis from Devil's Due - mediocre on most counts. I grew up on Transformers; this is my nostalgia in the way that most of my comic book fan peers dig superheroes. Alas, this book is light on any reason to care about the characters, and despite some interesting characters designs, both artists fail miserably as sequential storytellers.
I truly enjoyed this comic, storyline is interesting (although not all was said in regard of The Fallen in Dark Age series) and characters are great despotic Megatron, psychotic Starscream, Fallen character that looks like he has jumped out of some W40K story, shoot-first-ask-questions-later Grimlock and of course Optimus Prime, unwilling participant in the whole Cybertron civil war and elected Autobot leader (by the will of mysterious Matrix), former librarian who is trying to see the point of all the slaughter taking place around him. At first he decides to let Decepticons take over the planet but later he realizes that entire struggle is part of greater plan so he decides to make a stand and starts leading Autobot as a true (and Grimlock-approved :)) Prime.[return][return]Great comic highly recommended.
No one tells a Transformer story quite like Furman. Excellent take of the start of the Great War. A tf fan will know this. Left the door wide open for more especially with the lines not the end. It also set in motion target 2006 as well as TFTM. I wished we would have seen the Chaos Bringer, Unicron in some form. Excellent allusions to him and a little more back story of the fallen would have been nice. I felt that the War Within Dark Ages, the second half needed more development. It also left unanswered questions what happened to Prime and Megatron? We know they will return, but still missing how they would. Makes me want to read more of the Pre-IDW series. The characters seemed so close to G1 I loved their cybertronian modes.
