Nora Newberry and Raquel Madden had been best friends since their school days. Now, ten years since Nora had left her hometown of Milburn in Wyoming, she was back. Nora and Raquel were over the moon at the plan which had all finally fallen into place. The Madness Diner, owned by the two women, would be opening in only one week’s time. Their uniforms – designed by both – had arrived; everything was on track for the grand opening.
With only three days until the opening, Nora was on a date with Harvey. She wasn’t sure about his smooth charm, but she had to admit there was something there. But later that night, disaster struck and murder happened. Raquel had been bludgeoned to death in their diner while she was hanging paintings. Whatever would Nora do without her best friend? Her grief didn’t allow her to think – until she was suddenly involved in the investigation. Would she and the sheriff discover who killed Raquel? Or was the sheriff blindsided by his dislike of another man, so much that he wouldn’t see the truth?
Death at a Diner is the 1st in A Murder in Milburn series by Nancy McGovern, with a fast pace and plenty of action. I guessed the perpetrator quite early and felt gratified by the confirmation! There are plenty of errors in this novel, which a good editor would correct. An enjoyable cozy mystery. Recommended.

Didn't love it, didn't hate it...
What I like most about cozy mysteries is the characters, the characters in this book just fell a little short for me... I do realize this was her debut book and the first book in the series, so I will definitely read the next book, to see how it develops.... as far as the mystery in the book I figured it out pretty quick, and I generally don't do that, there were some hints dropped and I really didn't like the character who did it... also there was something that really bugged me in this book, the character would refer to another character as their high school girlfriend, but everyone went to high school together, and this person was still around, so I'm not sure why they just did not call this person by name? I know that, It might sound silly, but it just really irritated me....

I enjoyed the story but had a hard time getting past the typos and mistakes. The author wrote several times about Alan returning for Principal Fuller's funeral then at the end called it Principal Fuller's WEDDING. Major mistake.

This is the first book in the Murder in Milburn series by Nancy McGovern.
After reading a previous book by McGovern, I decided to pick up this series on a whim. Sometimes you can’t take a series for granted that it is going to be full of fluff and misspellings. This series takes cozy writing seriously. It is intense. It is fun and it makes you sometimes not even like the main character. But then you come to love them again and root for their success.
This story is about Nora and Raquel who are life long friends and want to start a business together. Right before they can open their doors, Raquel is murdered and Nora is in a bad accident with her new boyfriend. Tensions just ramp up from there. Nora decides to dig into the murder investigation instead of trying to open the business they started. Without Raquel’s money, Nora is sure the business will fail and so she focuses on what she can control.
This is part of a ten or more book series that I bought on Kindle. Definitely enjoying it thus far. Good series to dig into.
If you love a good cozy mystery, check this one out. What a fun read!

I liked the main characters and some of others a lot and can see this world being built. I figured out who did it early on, but I still liked the book and am continuing to read more of the series! I recommend checking these out (great beach reads!) if you like cozy mysteries set in small towns... who doesn't!
Only criticism is there were a few typos, but that's not a deal breaker; especially when self-publishing!

This was a good story with a lot of twists and turns and misunderstandings. I like Nora but I am not really sure if I love either of the men who are interested in her. Harvey goes on one date of her and decides she is the one and Sean seems pushy and vindictive. Can we have man number three please. Also I would like some of the side characters to be more developed.

Friendship never ending
Loved it! A terrific start to a new series. Can friendship cost you your life? The main character is spunky and the plot twists and turns until you are second guessing yourself on who is the murderer. Terrific

I found this to be good start to this series. Although, I was sad that one of the two diner owners was the one killed. But, I liked Nora. I'm not sure about Harvey and his questionable past, but I'd love to read more in the series to learn more. :) The mystery was good and I didn't guess the killer until right before the reveal. I recommend this series and can't wait to be able to read more. :)

This book is from a first author and self published. When reading the blog of the book it intrigued me because the story starts with the murder of the main character's best friend. Nora who has moved back to her small home town in Wyoming to follow her dream to open a diner with her best friend Raquel finds her dead at the diner after Nora returns from a date, with what I would call an iffy guy named Harvey. Nora then sets out to prove that her best friend was not killed by a drifter as the locals want her to believe but by one of them
As I progressed through the book, I was hooked after the first chapter, I soon realized that Nancy McGovern is a new writer with lots of promise. The book is fast paced and yet you get a sense of the characters from the start which is my main thing. If characters lay flat I will dump the book. The inter action between all the old friends from high school who have stayed and Nora who has returned shows that everyone has secrets no matter how well you think you know them. Even Raquel.
The murder to me was a surprise, not so much because of twist and turns, but because I became so engrossed in the story that I like the sheriff picked on one person, not the same as the sheriff, decided on motive and opportunity and then just read for the sheer enjoyment of Nancy's writing and story telling.
I had signed up to receive a free copy of the book to read and give a review except my electronics had other ideas, so I went to Amazon and purchased it. Best $.99 I spent, and I would spend it again in a heart beat.
I know many people don't like e-reading and I was one of them, now I look back and see all the fun authors I have missed and have to play catch up with.

The two girls had worked hard and long to get their funds together and purchase the diner. Nora didn't have nearly as much money saved as Raquel's $500K, but she was coming in as an equal partner due to her matching expenses and her talent as a Chef. Raquel was an Accountant.
Everything is golden for Nora. Her dream coming true in just three days, and a man, Harvey, a Real Estate talent had asked her for a date. As Harvey arrives in his Ferrari Testarossa, small town girl of Milburn, WY can't believe her new life.
The luck turns however, a suspicious car accident, attempted robberies, battery, and murder will find it's way into Nora's life. Her world will turn upside down and what is true and false will blend until Nora works to figure her life out, without Raquel by her side.
This was a very good debut novel in what is a romantic mystery series. As an added treat the author shares a short story entitled " A Bluebell Knopps Mystery Series: The Locked Room Murder.
The Locked Room Murder involves a young woman achieving her majority (21st Birthday,) only to find our her ex-boyfriend (last night) is dead and she, herself, is a witch. The blue hair might have been a clue, but?
This bonus book was a fun and quick read. The mystery was well executed and kept you wondering how and who all through it. A series to look forward to.

I wish I could rate this book higher. I have just finished the first 2 books and will leave my combined feedback for the series.
First for the positives:
The story was unique and interesting. It didn't take long to get started, it kept moving, and provided lots of twists and turns throughout. The characters and relationships were complex and well-developed. The characters themselves were flawed and believable.
What I would like to see improved:
The dialogue bothered me. A lot. It didn't seem natural. The words the different characters used did not seem to fit the characters in many cases and they all seemed to speak in a similar style, though their personalities were unique.
Also, in both books, the culprit is unmasked in the last 2 pages or so with not much written about the aftermath. This was especially true in the first book and improved in the second.
Overall, it was a decent read. I look forward to the 3rd.

I just finished reading the whole Murder in Milburn series; I am a Kindle Unlimited subscriber and (almost exclusively) read mysteries by independent authors. Many are really good - some have both a good story line and are well written. I didn't find that to be the case with this author. I was distracted with poor grammar and confused about why the folks in Wyoming used British spelling (leant instead of leaned for example.)
The books do have several 5 star reviews on Amazon, but over time, I've learned to pay more attention to the poor ratings because those seem more honest.
I recommend the books if you're able to overlook the grammar issues (some of which were typos, some were improper use of words -they're, their, there and some were misuse because of lack of a dictionary - none of which would be caught by spell check but should have been caught by re-reading the book once or twice before release or by having a beta reader)

This book would benefit greatly from an editor and a proofreader. There was one point where the sheriff was listing the people that he and the main character had gone to high school with, but one of the people he mentioned by first name only hadn’t ever been mentioned up until that point (and wasn’t mentioned again...Wallis).
The writing is extremely clunky. It’s honestly some of the worst dialogue I’ve ever read outside of a Sweet Valley High book. The arguments drag on and one and are just plain ridiculous.
Do you like the mob? There’s one in Milburn! Do cults interest you? Milburn’s got one of those, too! I cannot believe an adult woman wrote this book. It reads like something a kid in high school would have written. Is this series supposed to be for adults?
I also think the author is confused as to the meaning of “step-brother.” She continually uses the term step-brother when, in actuality, she means half-brother.
I made it all the way to Chapter 22 and gave up.

This was a fun introduction into a series I've heard about for a long time and have been trying to make time for. I just checked the date I got it on Amazon, and it's one of the first cozies that I got. It was sort of a heartbreaking murder mystery, and the killer surprised me yet I wasn't super surprised about who it was. It was a good showdown, and Nora was able to help prevent any more meaningless deaths.
I love the character of Mrs. Mullaly, Nora's landlady. She's such a fun and happy woman with a sweet little puppy that Nora latched onto in her sorrow. This seems like much more than just a mystery series. It's kind of a continuing history of the town and people as I'm finding out now that I'm most of the way through the second book. Kind of an ongoing soap opera but so far no cliffhangers.

An Enjoyable Light Mystery
Nora returns home after about 10 years away, to formalize her and her best friend’s dream of opening their own diner. But 3 days before the opening, Rachel is murdered.
With only a sheriff in this small town, Nora decides she’s going to find her best friend’s killer. There a a few unsavory characters that could have something to do with it but clues are few and far between. Meanwhile 2 possible suitors appear to squabble over Nora. It’s almost comical the way they “fight” over her. Meanwhile she’s’ inserting herself everywhere trying to find clues.
The story line is fun to read since it’s rather light and not violent. But it could use some serious editing. There were many places where incorrect pronouns were used and some garbled sentences proved distracting.
But all in all it was nice light reading.

Interesting start to a new to me series & author. I'd have given another star except for 2 items: the people in this town are mostly vile, horrible people. Why would Nora ever want to move back and settle there? And I don't like when characters try to be noble but really come across as stupid: Nora signed away her family's estate and then refuses to take even a little bit of Raquel's money to get the diner going. I get that Nora was devastated when her parents were killed but she was of age so should have known better to sign anything without reading it. And not taking enough money to cover the first 2-3 loan payments just ensure the diner could open is dumb. I hope the author provides readers with some more likable characters in the next book in the series as this book didn't provide many to like.

The fact that it took me 3 days to finish this book is absolutely nothing to do with the story. That was all life getting in the way. It was really well written and I believe I will like Nora, the MC, very much. I like Sean, the Sheriff and at the moment I'm alright with Harvey, but still have a few doubts about him. I absolutely adore Mrs. Mullaly and Maynard though. Having an opening book to a series where the best friend is the one murdered is a shocker, but still a new(ish) idea and it flowed well. I feel bad for Nora, having lost her best friend AND having to, yet again, delay the opening of her diner. But I love that she was selfless enough to refuse Davis's offer at the end of the book. I look forward to reading the remainder of the series.

Mystery with a capital M!!
Wow, this book I could not put down! From the time the girl was killed , it held my attention. I could not figure out who did it! A great book.
I intend to now go & check out the next book. You, Nancy McGovern are a great mystery writer!! Loved every moment of the book.
Only thing that messed me up is that the young man Allan who came back for the principal's funeral in one part & later said it was for the principal's wedding. I had to go back & confirm that one. (Haha).

Nora Newberry and Raquel Madden are completing a ten year dream and are preparing to open a diner. Nora returns from a date and finds Raquel murdered. There seems to be no reason for murder and Nora presided to investigate. While being the first book in a series of more than a dozen O found the book somewhat disappointing. To me many of the characters I found not that likeable especially Harvey and felt they could be developed better. I plan to tackle the next in the series and see if I will like it better.

December 13, 2023Nora and Raquel are all set to open their new, co-owned diner, but Raquel is found murdered in the final stretch. This is #1 in the Murder in Milburn series. I may try more in the series, but I couldn't really get into the characters. Harvey dates Nora once and keeps hanging around, but how does she feel about him? Obviously she's thrown off by the death of her friend and troubled about whether she should still open their dream diner, but it just seemed like it was missing something. Maybe it'll be smoothed out in book 2.

Nora & Raquel are best friends planning on opening a diner in Milburn, Wyoming, until Raquel is murdered. Throw in a religious cult & a sketchy potential boyfriend, & a sheriff with a grudge, & you have plenty of suspects & some Agatha Christie-esque twists & you have a fun mystery that you can't wait to finish.
Incidently, there is an actual Millburne, Wyoming. I doubt the fictional Milburn is any relation, though.

Excellent
This was the best new book I've read in ages. So often, cozy mysteries are cute and fluffy, with decent plots but poor character development and equally poor writing. This book, on the other hand, was engaging and rather demanding. I couldn't put it down. The mystery was neither obvious nor oblique; the writing was even and well done; the surprises were more than plot devices; and the characters were believable. I'm so excited to contribute this series!

4.0 Stars 📚 Great Book 📚 Take your chance!
Didn’t expect much of the book, and was gladly deceived. I enjoyed this book so much that I had to recommend to my friends. The author created a lovable character that doesn’t pretend to be a detective, but whose curiosity pays off. The story has a nice pace and keeps you wishing for one more chapter. Didn’t expect much of the book, and was gladly deceived. I enjoyed this book so much that I had to recommend to my friends. The author created a lovable character that doesn’t pretend to be a detective, but whose curiosity pays off. The story has a nice pace and keeps you wishing for one more chapter. I’m delighted with the author and prepared to read the next book!

Exciting new series! Nora and her friend Raquel have always dreamed of opening a diner together and it is finally time. I don't typically like cozy mysteries where one of the main characters dies but I have enjoyed another series by this author so I decided to try it. Of course it was the main theme of the book and added sadness but it eventually pushed Nora to solve the crime. It is an exciting quick paced book!

This was a very good murder mystery and that me in tears when Nora's best friend is murder a few days before the diner they worked so hard to make happen was due to open. When your best friend get murdered, you have to do everything in your power to help solve it which Nora tries to do. With her best friend dead she wonders if the hopes and dreams they held will be possible still. It was a very good and touching book.

It was disappointing that they killed off Raquel, even though it was announced in chapter 1 that they were going to; I was thinking she and Nora as a duo would work well together. How things go with Harvey, Sean and Nora (love triangle anybody?) remains to be seen.
I'm a bit surprised that the diner ended up being on hold at the end; with Nora talking to Harvey right at the end of the book, I was expecting him to become her new business partner, fronting the money to get the place open.

Great read
Emotional roller coaster of a murder mystery. I hope characters do resolve their issues in future books I think it would make them unstoppable. It was sad to see such a likable character killed but it brought about a more satisfying resolution in the end. I look forward to trying the recipe too!
