Gracyn Pierce is starting over. She has a new home, a new boyfriend, and a new horse. Everything is perfect, or so it seems. Because Gracyn left a secret behind. In her quest to erase the memory of that night, she forces herself to study hard, her sights set on an Ivy League college.
But her attempts to stay focused are derailed when the neighbor suspected of murdering his sister returns to town. As if that isn’t enough, her senses begin to change in ways that aren’t physically possible. As hard as she tries to find an explanation, there isn’t one.
Gracyn soon learns that things are not what they appear to be. Even her sister who took her in is hiding something. Will Gracyn continue pursuing her goal of getting accepted to a top-notch university, or will the secrets of the past and present ruin her future?
I wanted to comment on this book for any of you who read my other series, The Sunset Trilogy. I have to admit, I like this book the best of all of those I've written so far. Unlike the first book in The Sunset Trilogy, this one has a subplot that gets resolved at the end and, as a result, some questions are answered. I think it's a better first book in a series, and I owe that to some of the very first reviews I received on Shadows at Sunset. If you grab a copy and give this one a chance, I'd love to hear what you think! And on a side note - 25 cents for every print and ebook copy sold will be donated to The Ian Somerhalder Foundation, an organization focused on helping animals and the environment. :)
Before going into my review, I’d like to make a request. Please don’t judge this book by its cover or title. I was a little hesitant picking up this book after looking at the cover. It’s beautiful but doesn’t stand out in YA Paranormal genre.
I’m so glad I chose to overlook this matter. The book is exceptionally well-written. The flow of the story is smooth and keeps you hooked till the very end. The characters are perfectly described, they’re relatable and very fun to know. I really enjoyed the plot. I love both Lucian & Alex. I love Gracyn’s character too.
I was so disappointed to know the second book in the series was not out yet! I literally finished this book in two sitting; I kept thinking about it when I had to put it down. This book helped me recover from my reading slump and put me in high hopes. Overall, I was so invested in the plot and characters; the author did the fantastic job keeping me on my edge to find out what will happen.
But why 4 stars out of 5? My rating is between 4 & 4.5 because this book felt like a prequel in some aspects. The world and character building took a lot of time (it wasn’t boring) but I was hoping for something great to happen. As I was nearing the end, I already knew what was coming. This is the first book in a trilogy, first part of the main series but it still felt like the main story is yet to begin.
But, that’s my opinion. I really want to read the next part as I care for the characters too much. I love the setting and where the plot is going. I can’t wait to put my hands on the second book.
After her mother gets a job promotion that relocates her to Russia, eighteen year old Gracyn Pierce leaves her home in Washington D.C. to attend her senior year of high school in the quaint town of Sedgewick, Massachusetts. It doesn't take long for Gracyn to find out that Sedgewick has a dark scandal regarding the murder of 12 year old Cassie Dumante, with her older brother, Lucien, being the supposed murderer.
This scandal has rocked the little town and its inhabitants for the last two years, but everyone is set on edge when Lucien returns to finish school. Although there wasn't enough evidence to convict him, all of Sedgewick are convinced that he is Cassie's murderer. However, Gracyn finds herself somewhat pulled toward him, in ways that seem unnatural.
However, Lucien Dumante is not the only unnatural worry in Gracyn's life. A terrible accident caused by Gracyn herself that left a man in a coma, odd phone calls and presents, a history teacher with ties to her family, her sister and brother in-law's secrets they try to keep from her and most of all, Gracyn's fear of horses that begins to dissipate when she meets Gypsy, a brilliant horse who becomes her friend and eventual protector.
All of this and more are bound to Gracyn, to Sedgewick and to the once unknown family past that goes beyond unnatural and reaches clear into the supernatural.
When I first started reading the book, I was somewhat disappointed when in less than 24 hours Gracyn just so happens to meet Alex, the best looking and most desired guy in town, who's in a band and is also really smart...and is totally interested in her! I found that to be too cliche and overdone and kind of a knockoff from Twilight (which I still secretly love...shhhhhh).
But that is really my only fault with the story.
The rest of Gypsy Magic I found to be rather intriguing! While Gracyn's self-deprecation got rather annoying from time to time, I loved her curiosity and her drive to know more about the Dumante murder and try to see Lucien in an unbiased light. The funky little town of Sedgewick boasts a myriad of equally funky townspeople that makes you wonder if normalcy is prevalent at all. I also appreciated that not all the questions were answered and what was answered barely scratched the surface.
It actually reminded me a great deal of Mystic Falls, Virginia from The Vampire Diaries of which I believe is a favorite show of the authors!
I also had the pleasure of meeting Tonya Royston and having her autograph my copy of the book! Her writing is simple and concise and she does a very good job at keeping the storyline and characters vague and from a distance. They don't come to you to be understood; you slowly come to them. And the ending had me pleasantly surprised! I will definitely be reading the next two books in 2019!
A great read for any supernatural, mystery or romance lover and also for anyone who has ever had a deep connection with horses or has ever wanted one at least.
“You still are the girl you’ve always been. Remember that. Everything is going to be fine.” I met Tonya Royston at a local holiday craft fair. I could not pass by her table with her beautiful book covers on display. Young Adult/Paranormal is not my usual reading genres but I as I listened to Tonya talk about her books I was intrigued. After going back and forth from deciding which series to start with (besides the Gypsy Magic trilogy she has written The Sunset Trilogy) I decided on this one. I should have just bought all of them because I know I’m going to enjoy the others too. Gypsy Magic is an engaging, well-written story. I liked that the female lead, Gracyn, is a smart high school senior who works hard to get good grades. She’s having to adjust to a whole new life in a new state. Her boyfriend, who is in a rock band, is also smart. Gracyn’s world has become very complicated soon after she moves to her newly discovered sisters house. A suspected child killer comes back to town (her new neighbor), her new friend's behavior has changed, and she’s finding she has enhanced senses. I won’t divulge details so that I don’t ruin the book for you. Once I hit mid-point in the book the pages flew by. I feel this is more of an introduction of what’s to come for Gracyn in the series as she learns more of what she is and what she can do. There is a good plot twist. The characters are interesting and I look forward to how they develop further in the next two books in the trilogy. I recommend this to those who enjoy young adult reads with paranormal aspects.
Who hasn’t had an event in life so bad, that you wanted move on, both literally and figuratively? When Gracyn has an opportunity to do so, she seizes it. Her mother is offered an overseas promotion, which she refused, unwilling to uproot Gracyn her senior year of high school, despite the many alternatives Gracyn suggests. To the main character’s surprise, her long-lost sister comes through, offering to take Gracyn in. Adjusting from living in a big city to a small town, making new friends, and fitting into the rhythm of life in her new home is expected, however this move isn’t typical and Gracyn is faced with surprising changes and challenges. Gypsy Magic is a well-paced YA book with engaging characters. The teens are depicted accurately. I was raised in a small town and yes, we gathered around bonfires and drank beer. When there’s not much to do, young adults find ways to occupy their time—often in activities that adults wouldn’t approve of. Royston inserts fully-realized parental figures in a believable manner. In some books, the adults are cardboard figures, not touched much upon, or portrayed as idiots. I loved that horses were prominent in the book and I totally get Gracyn’s fear of them. (Hey, they’re large, have hooves and chompy teeth.) I’m a big-time animal lover, so I’m always thrilled to see them in books, and yes, I love horses too. When I finished this book, I was eager to find out what happened next and very pleased I didn’t want to smack the main character. (I've been disappointed in the portrayal of teens.)
Tonya Royston has done it again! I'm not usually a YA reader but after reading her Sunset Trilogy, I was very interested to see what she would write next. I dove in and bought all 3 books of the second Trilogy without even reading the blurb. I like surprises and in this east coast town of Sedgwick, there are a lot of twists and turns. I give it 5 stars. It reads like a movie for all ages. Fantastic and I can't wait to see what happens next. Keep your eye on this author. Everything she writes is like book candy.

I just finshed all 3 of the Sunset Trilogy books and I was IN LOVE. I couldn't put them down. I loved the drama, the plot, the twist, the romance and ofcourse Dakota. It is so hard for me to find a good book. I love romance, drama and animals which is hard to find wrapped in to one book UNTIL NOW! Thanks Tonya for the great read. I'm ordering your next series of books now and I can't wait to get started.
The cover of this book sparked my interest and I found myself engaged in a wonderfully riveting story. The characters are well done and the story is awesome! This book is was page turner for me as I had trouble putting it down for the night. Such an awesome story and I am looking forward to the second book in this trilogy.
Interesting start for the series. I especially enjoyed the parts of the book that related to the horses, Gypsy and her bond to Gracyn especially. Read thru Kindle Unlimited.
Tonya weaves a truly magical spell with her newest series, Gypsy Magic. She tells an intriguing tale about a teen named Gracyn who discovers a hidden secret in her family and finds herself moving to a strange, new town called Sedgewick. Soon after she moves in and starts school, strange things begin happen to her. She was warned by her classmates and neighbours about the dangers of living there and to never be alone in the woods. When she meets two handsome guys, she has to decide which one she can trust. She discovers a shocking truth about herself and the town, where things are not always as they seem.
Gypsy Magic is a superb read, filled with rich details that bring you right back into high school. As you flip through the pages, you can’t help but feel the mysterious fog surround you as you get pulled deeper into the story. As a fan of supernatural tales like Sleepy Hollow and Vampire Diaries, this was a perfect fit for me.
“I had an unshakable fear of horses ever since I had fallen from one on a trail ride. After that, I had sworn never to get near them again, and yet I was now moving to a horse farm.”
Gracyn is about to start her senior year in high school when her mom gets a job offer in Moscow. Not wanting her mother to give up the opportunity, Gracyn offers to stay with her older sister for the year. Her father is not in the picture and she barely knows her sister since her mother gave her sister up for adoption and only told Gracyn about her recently.
I was given a copy of the ebook to review by onlinebookclub.org. It is the first in a trilogy and it is not Tonya Royston’s first book. She lives in northern Virginia and I chose the book to review because the plot looked interesting.
I absolutely loved this book and could not set it down this weekend!! The author has a way of giving you just enough information and intrigue that it's hard to stop reading. I just needed to know what was going to happen next and find out the big secret reveal at the end. I loved the characters in this book and cannot wait until this fall to find out where the story will lead them. I am especially interested to see where Gracyn and Lucian's relationship will go in the next book Gypsy Soul. I loved reading Gracyn's story and cannot wait for more. This is one of those books that while you're reading it's so easy to visualize you almost forget you're actually reading a book and not watching your own personal movie. Definitely recommend!
Usually I'm not much into YA but this book is different from the norm. I couldn't put it down. Gracyn Pierce moves in with the sister she didn't know she had till she was 15 and starts her senior year at a new high school. Yes there's the typical teenage problems but there's so much more. The storyline and characters kept me reading and the twist at the end between Gracyn and her sister Becca, wow! This is a great YA , trust me you won't be disappointed. This book ended at the perfect spot, leaving me wanting to learn more about the people of this little town, I feel book 1 just scratched the surface. Ms. Royston is definitely an author to watch. Independent reviewer for Romance Authors That Rock
Gypsy Magic was one of my favorite books this summer. Ms. Royston is an author to watch out for! I love the way she incorporates animals into all her stories. This is perfect for the young adult market. The manner in which Gracyn and Lucian’s relationship progresses – slow and steady – had me feverishly reading for more. I am so curious to see where it leads. There is definitely some chemistry there. The unexpected twist near the end caught me by surprise. She has me hooked – Book 2 can’t come soon enough!
A really enjoyable YA light paranormal romance. It had just the right mix of mystery, teenage angst and a touch of the supernatural. The pacing was perfect and the story flows steadily. The main characters are likeable and relatable characters. The ending was well-down with enough of a climax to make it satisfying while leaving one curious about the sequel. My only qualms were how easily the main character accepted the paranormal/supernatural events and the over-exaggerated expressions. All in all, an enjoyable read.
This book is probably just great for a young teenager, but I just didn't enjoy it. I've read many, many YA books that I have loved, but there was far too much teenage angst in this one and not enough paranormal events, which is what I was looking for (was halfway through the book before anything definitively paranormal even happened). I guess it's just been too long since I was a teen.
