In the wake of a thwarted war, Lana Harvey is more than ready for an extended vacation on the new houseboat she shares with the Lord of the Flies, but when the leaderless rebels begin poaching souls and selling them on the Ghost Market, Lana is tasked with heading up a new unit to stop them.
Having one of the most famous faces in Eternity proves challenging when it comes to finding a way inside the secretive world of illegal soul peddling, and the only person Lana knows with the right connections is Tasha Henry, a former colleague and defeated rebel with a poaching record. The rogue reaper isn’t going to be easy to track down, and even if Lana does manage to catch up with her, the real question is whether or not a shot at redemption will be enough to lure her away from the dark side.
USA Today bestselling author Angela Roquet is a delightfully macabre weirdo. She lives in Missouri with her irresistible BFF husband, their sweet, clever son, and a majestic marshmallow of a Great Pyrenees in a house stuffed with books, toys, skulls, owls, and glitter-speckled craft supplies.
Angela is a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association, as well as the Four Horsemen of the Bookocalypse, her epic book critique group, where she’s known as Death. When not swearing at the keyboard, she enjoys playing with her family and reading books that raise eyebrows.
GRAVEYARD SHIFT, the first novel in Angela's Lana Harvey, Reapers Inc. series, and BLOOD VICE, book one in the Blood Vice series, are now available for FREE on Kindle, Nook, Kobo, iBooks, & Google.
I received an Advanced Reading Copy in exchange for my honest review.
I am a lover of Limbo City and Lana's adventures and ongoing love story with Bub. Readers were given a hint of the Ghost Market in Angela Roquet's holiday novella, Season's Reapings. Now readers finally get some answers, but more questions arise as souls go missing but there doesn't seem to be any clear pattern or any real clues ever since Grim disappeared and the rebels have been run to ground.
With so many changes going on in Limbo City, and so many different character backgrounds, I was very impressed with how tight Roquet kept the story line throughout. Once again, Lana is on a mission, but this time it's to save her own skin as her secrets are being uncovered right and left by seemingly everyone, and not everyone is happy with her existence. Actually, it seems that almost NO ONE is happy with her existence and Lana has to go the extra mile to prove her worth in Limbo City. Old enemies AND old ghosts come come back to haunt her, and I was beyond words when Lana submits herself to a certain "activities". I can only say it speaks to her strength, keep my fingers crossed, and hope that Roquet has something up her sleeve for "Hellfire and Brimstone" coming in October.
Masterful craft and superb storytelling. The author clearly knows her mythology and how to weave an intriguing tale full of mystery, suspense, courage, and kissing.
I don’t like to do spoiler reviews because I feel it ruins the fun for the people who want to read it. But I will tell you a few things that I particularly enjoyed—in a vague way.
1) The humor. The comedic timing of some of the lines and scenes were spot on. One scene in particular was my favorite in the entire book (and perhaps the series). Involving a chicken, a biscuit and a “charming” man. You’ll just have to read more to figure all this out yourself.
2) The stakes. The stakes were pretty high in this book. Roquet does a pretty good job of developing the tension in stakes in the other Lana books as well, but here, it definitely helped amp up the page-turning.
3) The frenemy dynamic. Tasha and Lana’s relationship was complex and interesting.
4) Other relationships too: Particularly the relationship between Lana and Kevin (there’s a truly tender moment in the last 1/3 of the book) and between Lana and Bub. Bub’s steadfast devotion is so damn charming.
The only real complaint I have about Roquet’s books are the length. I wish they were a little longer. I enjoy Limbo City so much that it would be nice to linger in that world for a bit longer. But alas, we can’t have everything we want can we?
And that’s all the no-details telling you’re getting from me. But really, I highly recommend the book and agree with another reviewer that “It’s like Percy Jackson for adults.”
The book was really good there are some jumps and commentary I can’t always track but it’s not bad at all. I love bub and I won’t stop Putting it out there. I would love more on his background and escapades!
Man I love this series. Its irreverent and fantastical and borderline silly but it works. I love Lana’s wit and snark and her crew of found family. Bub is my favorite.
If you’re looking for award winning, thought provoking literature, this isn’t it. If you’re looking for an entertaining action packed paranormal fantasy, you’ll love this series.
First, let me advise anyone new to the series to start at the beginning. The first five books build the Eternity universe. Because I am lazy, I will rate the series to date.
After death, souls pass on to the heaven or hell of their religious belief based on how they lived. Those without a faith are sent into the soul sea where they reside until eventually being recycled into new life. There's a process. It involves storks.
Lana is an eighth generation reaper, created from excess soul matter. Reapers are second class citizens of Eternity with limited job prospects. Grim, head reaper in charge of soul collection...and generally unpleasant person, ruled the roost. His power base depended on one special soul, a first believer with the power of creation and the true mother of all reapers. After centuries of creation, the soul knew it was time to find a new first believer to take over the mantle of responsibility. She created Lana, a reaper with the extra ability to see special souls.
Lana transitions from an aimless reaper, content with low level harvests into a confident leader, willing to sacrifice for her friends and loved ones. I love that she is not perfect. In fact, she is very human and often overwhelmed by the insanity of her life.
The author does an exceptional job of building the secondary characters. Each one has their own challenges independent of Lana's and interact realistically. The books deal with drug abuse, death, devastating heartbreak and other extreme sports within the context of political feuding, manipulation and outright war.
Death wish ends after the epic battle between the rebels who want excess souls distributed to the most powerful gods, and the current, more democratic players. Grim is unmasked as a god and ousted from his "neutral" position in charge of the reapers. Naledi, the new first believer soul and Jenni, new head reaper, barely cling to their positions as Eternity's political leaders struggle for dominance in the aftermath.
Lana is happily enjoying sexy naked times with her hot demon boyfriend, Beelzebub (Bub for short), when their vacation is cut short by an urgent summons from Jenni. Apparently, several members of the Eternity council are unhappy with the way Lana bucked the system to help defeat the rebels, and want to see her dead. The only way to possibly regain favor (and save her life) is to find the whereabouts of dozens of missing souls.
Lana's anxiety and tension throughout Ghost Market make this installment a little more stressful than the other books. Will Lana solve the mystery in time to save her life? Will she sacrifice her integrity? Will Bub and her friends continue to support her? The reader doesn't know until the last chapter. I can't wait to see what happens next.
The 6th installment (not including short stories) of the Lana Harvey: Reaper’s Inc. series, “Ghost Market” sees Lana in the midst of all the action once again. The story starts quickly, which if you are a follower of her work, you know how she LOVES to throw Lana into turmoil. It certainly leads to character growth.
Lana is tasked with tracking down missing souls, and there is so much riding on her finding out what’s going on, in more ways than one. How would Eternity ever survive without her? All the usual suspects are there, and this story line really puts a light on who her real friends and allies are. Bub plays an interesting role in this book as their love story takes a turn. Tasha presents an interesting challenge to Lana, and in the end a hard choice is made, for which Lana will most likely be held accountable. Maalik remains omnipresent, new friendships are forged, new characters are introduced and Helljack puppies are cuddled. No (good) demons were harmed in the making of this novel.
As usual, Angela Roquet choses her words, so pay attention, including all of the pop culture, and chapter quotes. (I imagine one day on Jeopardy: “Angela Roquet pop culture for 1000, Alex”).
Having said that, I will say there are still questions (at least that I have) that remain unanswered and I swear her next (and last) installment, “Fire and Brimstone” will need to be twice the size to wrap everything up.
Three parting thoughts: Read her short stories (ALL of them), they tie things together. Read ALL of her novels, they are important There is a lesson here, woven so well into the story, you just might miss it.
Wow what a great ending to an awesome series. We are definitely on the down side of the story arc and working on all the clean up. There are some characters that I would just love to see completely gone. And there are others I can see growing more.
There is just one thing. It is a trap I believe that can happen. We (the fans) never seem to want to let our favorite characters go and want more but more is not necessarily a good thing. Personally I am content. If more are written I will certainly be reading them that is a promise. I will also be looking into more books written by Angela Roquet. I believe she has a great talent for creating that unique dance with her characters weaving in and out of each other with suspense and drama that keeps you just a bit off kilter.
I look forward to more of her work. Thank you for sharing your gift.
Same fun Joss Whedon type of humor, but with less love and care given to the plot. The plot was predictable and short compared to the other jewels in the reapers inc series.
Oooooh, I really liked this book! It’s filled with so much angst and tons of investigative adventures. Lana is definitely a favorite character. She’s strong, stubborn and a bit of a hot mess. She’s got flaws but they make her feel real.
One of the things I really liked about this book was the politics. Who had any idea the afterlife would have so much bureaucratic red tape? Some of it (okay, most of it) was super shady and underhanded. But I also liked it?? There were so many things going on in this book that I can’t wait to see play out in the next one. I’m also really excited to see how Lana does with captaining the new reaper unit.
I really liked how much Lana and Bub’s relationship has healed (and grown) after everything that’s happened. I love them as a couple and I just want the best for them. I can’t wait to see how things progress. 😊
I think the one thing I would have wanted to change was the way that Lana handled the Tasha situation. I felt like that part of the story was a little out of character for Lana. But it turned out okay in the end. And over all I liked the sneaky way Lana got back at the council for it. So, with that being said, I’m giving this book a four out of five stars.
I enjoyed this series of books. I believe I originally found the author and the 1st book in the series on an email that I receive but I am not positive. The protagonist in the story is Lana Harvey who is a Reaper -- beings in a celestial world that work for Grim (aka The Grim Reaper) and help him harvest souls. Evidently as humanity's population exploded so too did the amount of souls that needed to be gathered and Grim couldn't do it by himself. ANYWAY Lana occasionally butts head with Grim and lands in hot water.
I found these books clever and funny and I would recommend them to any sci-fi fan.
I got this book as part of the "Found in Limbo" collection which covers the last 4 books in the series. This review has been repeated for the individual books so that whichever route a reader takes, the review can be seen.
Lana, although looking forward to a much needed holiday, finds herself tasked with heading up a new unit to locate souls that are being poached and sold on the Ghost Market of the book's title. She needs to find a way into the secretive world, but having a face that is so well-known in Limbo City presents its own challenges.
After really enjoying Death Wish, Ghost Market was a bit of a come down. Whilst enjoyable, it felt a little bitty.
- The politics of Limbo City are in the forefront and whilst the reader is regularly reminded of the potential consequences for Lana, there isn't really a sense of danger.
- There's no real advancement in the social side of Lana's life, though that may be in part to other events.
- I liked the new gadget Lana gets to try out and am interested to see where and how that part of the books goes next.
Okay, but not spectacular. Hopefully the finale in Hellfire and Brimstone will be better.
I love Lana Harvey! Angela Roquet has created a fun, fantastic series of "Afterlife" stories! I only wish I had the money to buy every single book in the series, PLUS the Map of Limbo City, where Purgatory Lounge is the friendly neighborhood corner bar! I love the reapers, I love the Archangels, I love the Chinese Healer and her apprentice! I love to hate the demon bad guys. I love the demon good guys, and girls! All in a a jolly, blasphemous romp.
The main character was whiny, grouchy, mean, and self pitying the entire book. It was made even worse by the fact that no one called her on it, and she never seemed to see how horrible of a person she was being. If I didn't already have the next book, this one may have been enough to make me quit the series. I'll see if she gets her head out of her butt in the next one.
Sorry these little blurbs of reviews aren't very telling, but the important thing is this entire series is fantastic and a wonderful read!! Theres all kinds of things going on from death and life, to love, friends, murders, conspiracy, danger, and told from the viewpoint of a reaper. Not THE Grim Reaper, but one of his reapers. ;)
I enjoy the series very much, you definitely need to read it in order though, since its a continuations from the previous book. I like the characters and the storyline, especially since it has a different spin on the paranormal genre. Good thing I have the next book all lined up already. Wonder what will happen next?
Lana is asked to help find lost souls, although her very life is on the line, but her friends help and she manages to find some of them, but still the committee are out to get her. Bub helps save her and Kevin is doing better now. The story was a very good one, so the last one will be sad to read but I want to know what happens and I hope she escapes with her life.
I love this series, just when you thing that this is the end of the series, Angela Roquet thinks up knew things for Lana to get involved in. Looking forward to reading book 7 next. Please read from the beginning if you are thinking of reading this book. A great story for all fantasy lovers!!!
Story felt a bit tacked-together and the typos are still maddening, especially when the overall arc of the series is pretty good. Will finish out the series and hope the last one is a bit more thoughtfully constructed.
This reads like a filler book mostly designed to generate a bit of retcon to bridge to what appears to be the final book. Also, Lana falls out of character a bit, some of her actions high-handed/dismissive of Bub after their great love triumphs moment in the last book.
Lana can't catch a break except for her Love life. Thank goddess for Bun he seems to ground the over the top Reaper we all love. Even as she is facing losing her head literally over the accusations she conspired with Grim.
Lana just can catch a break. It's also a shame that she has to do this task in this book just so that she can prove herself to them which in my opinion after all the crap they have put her through is FUBARed. Now that they have removed a vital part of her how does that make her feel? I am glad that Bulb still loves her regardless. The two of them are cute together.
