Jessica is on vacation in St. Thomas in the Caribbean when she discovers the corpse of hotel owner Walter Marschalk. The island police suspect a hot-tempered ex-employee, but cool-headed Jessica sets out to discover who's the real serpent in Eden.

The water's lovely; the scenery's gorgeous, but trouble is waiting for Jessica in paradise.

Librarian’s note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.

Jessica Fletcher (born Jessica Beatrice MacGill, and writes under the initialed J.B. Fletcher) is a fictional character from the US television series Murder, She Wrote.

In keeping with the spirit of the TV show, a series of official original novels have been written by American ghostwriter Donald Bain. The author credit for the novels is shared with the fictitious "Jessica Fletcher." The series has been continued by authors Renée Paley-Bain, Jon Land, Terrie Farley Moran, and Barbara Early.

When the first novel in the series, Gin and Daggers, was published in 1989 it included several inaccuracies to the TV series including Jessica driving a car which she could not do as she never learned to drive. Due to fans pointing out the errors, the novel was republished in 2000 with most of the inaccuracies corrected.

Jessica Fletcher goes on a much needed vacation to the Caribbean island of St. Thomas. She is visiting old friends of hers, Laurie and Walter Marschalk, who are the owners of the beautiful Lovers Lagoon Inn where Jessica is staying. While there, she finds out that her friends might be having marital problems, financial troubles, and competition from neighboring hotel Diamond Reef. One night while taking a late night stroll, Jessica discovers Walter’s dead body in the lagoon—murdered. Of course she ends up spending her vacation sleuthing, looking for Walter’s killer.

This was another enjoyable Murder, She Wrote mystery. Jessica was very likable as always, and very persistent in her search for answers. I enjoyed the interesting assortment of characters she met at St. Thomas. It was nice to have Jessica’s good friend, Dr. Seth Hazlitt, from Cabot Cove featured in the story as well, and I loved the St. Thomas setting. The ending of the story did leave me a little unclear as to the reasons and motivations concerning a few things, but other than that, this was still a very entertaining read.

3 Stars. Rather simplistic but I enjoyed it. The real author, Donald Bain, obviously knows and loves the Caribbean and specifically St. Thomas. Jessica has just completed her latest mystery and, as a reward to herself, has accepted a two week holiday with her close Cabot Cove friends, now island hoteliers, Laurie and Walter Marschalk. As an aside, she seems to have many more close friends than the rest of us; does she ever see any of them again - at least the ones that remain alive? She finds that their hotel and marriage are having problems, and it isn't long before she discovers Walter's body floating face down in Lover's Lagoon. So many suspects: rival hotel owners, upset employees, disgruntled investors, disgraced politicians, a mistress or two, and possibly his wife Laurie! True to the TV series, Jessica delves deeper and annoys the local authorities. Watch for the editor's mistake - did she sew on her missing button or not? And that irritating aspect of the TV show jumps up - this is #3 in the series, and there were also 4 volumes in the original series, yet everyone seems to think, including Doc Hazlitt, that she has never been involved in a real murder before. Jessica is going on vacation after being sick and with the encouragement of her friend and doctor Seth. So after many invitations from her married friends, she has decided to go to St. Thomas and visit her friends there that own the hotel she will be staying at. When she gets there, she then begins to understand that her friends are in financial trouble and at risk of losing there hotel. Unfortunately, she discovers the husband dead and begins to look into why. She discovers a lot more than what her friends told her and now must uncover what lead to the murder and the real reason behind it.

I got this when it was either free or on sale because I used to love the show and still enjoy the re-runs thanks to my mom. This was a nice easy read but in some ways I felt a little disappointed because I would have enjoyed seeing more of some the characters from the show. Seth was featured a little but not much since she was on vacation. It was told all from her POV and kinda wish it was more 3rd person instead. But it was a nice book and I enjoyed it for what it was. A easy cozy mystery.

All Jessica wants is to have a few relaxing days in the Caribbean after finishing her latest book. Her former neighbors from Cabot Cove have opened their own small hotel there and invited her over for a stay. But it seems that even on holiday, Jessica can’t get a break. After she discovers a corpse, she can’t help herself to try to discover what happened on St. Thomas.

The mystery in this book was good. I liked sleuthing with Jessica and she is her charming self. She often pries and sleuths to get her answers and I understand why some people might not like her for it, but to be honest, the books wouldn’t work if she wasn’t so overly nosy.

The setting is a Caribbean island and I wanted to be there so bad. Just pack my bags, get into a plane and go there. Jessica meets a lot of interesting and different characters in this book and I liked how the story played out.

At the end something was missing for me. The explanation we got felt like there was something missing and the answers we were getting were incomplete.

This is the perfect book to read during a snowy winter. Set on St. Thomas, there is a real island feel and I really felt transported to the Caribbean beaches!

On a vacation to sunny St. Thomas, Jessica Fletcher can't escape a murder mystery in this early entry in the series. Things begin amiss when the friends she is visiting (Laurie & Walter Marschalk) end up under investigation for money issues & she witnesses the firing of an employee of the resort. When the one owner turns up dead, a rather atypical mystery ensues even for this series. Bain leaves us guessing throughout the story as the clues are so widely scattered that there are more suspects than usual & a lot of guesswork to be done along the way. Yes we have our typical Jessica Fletcher sleuthing which in this case trumps the authorities in the US Virgin Islands. Granted the ending is a bit rushed & the climactic scene at the end really feels forced, it's still an effective entry in this series that at times remains more for the fans than mystery lovers.

An early Murder, She Wrote from the mid-nineties. The US Virgin Islands provided an interesting setting for the murder of a local hotel proprietor. Sadly, we didn't see as much of the Island (St. Thomas) as I would have liked, but it was still nice to "be there."

Jessica is in St. Thomas visiting her former neighbors who had bought a hotel in the Caribbean and moved there. When the husband is murdered, Jessica has questions. There were some neat coincidences that contributed to her involvement in the murder, but it's Murder She Wrote so I was able to put aside my disbelief and still enjoy the book.

The conclusion actually came as some surprise to me so that earned this an extra star. The conclusion had some believability issues for me as well, but you know that I'm already willing to push those aside for some Jessica Fletcher.

St. Thomas, Isole Vergini statunitensi, paradiso caraibico. Panorami da sogno. Spiagge splendide, sabbia finissima, mare, sole, relax.

Caso risolto! Si torna a casa, signora Fletcher?

I do like the MSW books a lot. Lansbury, no matter what she's part of, can do no wrong in my opinion. With that said these books kind of iritate me in that tbey are based on the series yet Jessica says in one of the 'booze' titled books that she knows nothing about teaching. Hello?! JB was an English teacher by profession. That bugged me. But I still adore her character and the stories.

I enjoyed this installment very much. I felt like the story was much more cohesive and interesting than the last one. Jessica is supposed to be on vacation in St. Thomas but naturally a murder occurs at her resort. The resort (The Lovers Lagoon Inn) is owned by a couple that Jessica was friends with in Cabot Cove some time ago. The couple moved to the tropics to escape the cold Maine winters and never looked back. The resort is situated on a piece of land abutting a famous body of water known as “Lover’s Lagoon” – according to local lore if a couple stands in the water together they will be forever in love and happy. This lagoon is a hot commodity and the neighboring resort fought a long legal battle with Lover’s Lagoon Inn but lost out on property ownership. It is immediately implied that Jessica’s old buddies, using nefarious means, illegitimately obtained the land in and around the lagoon. As Jessica settles in at the Inn she starts to pick up on undertones of desperation from both husband and wife – financial troubles, marital strife, legal issues etc. but she intends to enjoy her vacation nevertheless. Not long after her arrival on the island her old friend and half owner of the resort is found (by Jessica of course) murdered right there in the water of Lover’s Lagoon. A disgruntled, former employee is immediately charged and arrested for the crime but Jessica is not convinced of his guilt. Per the usual set up for these books Dr. Seth shows up from Cabot Cove and the two of them blunder about St. Thomas trying to sort out what actually happened. Jessica figures out the complicated mess and while unhappy with how things turned out, she emerges victoriously and manages to salvage a few enjoyable moments of relaxation before returning to Maine.

Jessica Fletcher is heading to St. Thomas for a vacation and to reunite with old friends, Laurie and Walter Marschalk, who own the inn she'll be staying at. From the moment she arrives though she senses something is off. There are money troubles and competition with a nearby hotel. Just as soon as she finally begins to relax Jessica finds Walter's body on the beach. It seems murder follows her everywhere she goes.

This was a fun read. I enjoyed following a Jessica around. The setting is nice and everything is described well. I could feel the vacation vibes. These books always feel like being inside an episode of Murder She Wrote. I love it.

The mystery is a little too complicated and I didn't get all the answers I wanted. With Jessica on the case though it's always interesting to watch things play out.

About a month before the pandemic stay at home instructions came through I panicked at the thought of being inside and running out of books.
I went Off to the library fill a bag for 5 bucks sale .
I hadn't quite filled the bag when closing time arrived.
On my way to the checkout I saw a small pile of these murder, she wrote books and added them to the bag.
I had no idea. I am usually more deliberate with my reading choices. I miss the freedom of ordering books from the library.
I'm struggling, but reading.

Overall an enjoyable read, classic who done it which had me guessing differnt suspects the entire read! Would have been a 4-5 star read but the ending just felt a little rushed, but nonetheless a great little cozy mystery for the beach.

Fun and cheeky but a little muddled with the end game/ end act. The twist wasn’t a twist and felt like a soft and easy ending.
Still fun all around.

È stato il libro delle ferie al mare. Come Jessica.

I remember reading this book before and thinking that it was a real rollercoaster, but I didn't have that same feeling on re-read. It's definitely difficult to put down, though.

Jessica is off to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands for a much-needed vacation after a hard winter, fighting with both her book and the flu. She has a standing invitation from friends (and former Cabot Cove-ers) Walter and Laurie Marschalk to visit their Lover's Lagoon Inn, which was built on a highly-prized bit of land next to a perfect lagoon of water.

Jessica arrives and finds that her friends aren't quite as happy and carefree as she remembers them. Walter confides in her that they are having financial issues and are at war with the nearby mega-resort of Diamond Reef. He tells her that they acquired the lagoon and surrounding land in a frankly super-sketchy way with the help of a local politico, and are being investigated for that as well. A couple of days later, Walter is found dead in his precious lagoon, and the hunt is on for his murderer.

As it turns out, Walter wasn't much loved by anybody, including his wife, so there are plenty of people who had a motive to kill him. His murder is similar to one a couple of years old, when the last lone holdout was killed and Walter & co swooped down to grab the land. Jessica pretty much decides that she has to investigate on her own, because she claims friendship with both Marschalks and doesn't have much confidence in the local authorities.

There are plenty of twists and turns to this story, and the closest we'll ever get to an on-page sex scene (even on reread, that scene shocked me, LOL). I didn't really think any of the characters had any redeeming qualities - they were all slimy and gross. Laurie Marschalk was a total bitch and I have no idea why Jessica put up with her. One of the things she realizes along the way is how little she actually knew the Marschalks when they were her neighbors in Cabot Cove.

There are some similarities to the previous novels in terms of plot structure. For instance, Seth rides to the rescue yet again (Mort apparently couldn't take time off), albeit relatively late in the story. I was amused to learn that Mort and Seth are BFFs, too - Mort still reads like the poor man's version of Amos Tupper. We have more glimpses of Cabot Cove, and judging by the sample in the back, it looks like the next book will be the first totally set in our favorite Maine coast village. I'm looking forward to that!

One of the earlier “Murder, She Wrote” books, but still an enjoyable whodunit from this series.

The lovely, exotic setting of the Caribbean made me wish I was accompanying Jessica on her vacation, sans the dead body, of course! Once more, we are carried along with Jessica as she tries to solve the murder mystery that has tainted her well-earned holiday in her usual tenacious, cool-headed way.

Something that was a little problematic for me, however, was the whole fake suicide in the jail cell thing. How it was carried out seemed pretty sketchy to me, especially how the police somehow managed to miss the rather important detail of no body. I have to say that part of the plot made me lift my eyebrows in skepticism.

Anyway, despite that and the somewhat rushed ending, I am very seldom disappointed in Jessica’s adventures, and this continues to be my all-time favourite cozy mystery series.

Jessica is off to the carribean in this book for a much needed holiday after finishing her latest book. Her holiday is all the more exciting as she is going to visit old friends who now live there and own a 4 * inn. Unfortuately Jessica finds her holiday to be anything but relaxing when she comes across a dead body.As usual Jessica puts her thinking cap on and starts her own investigation and thats where the fun begins.
This is another great whodunnit by this writer. I love that this book is set in the carribean and I would take this book with me on holiday as a fun read. It's a perfect cosy mystery with lots of red herrings to keep you guessing. There is alot mouth watering discriptions of the local food. I can't wait to start reading the next book.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It had earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

I really loved reading Rum & Razors (Murder, She Wrote #3). It did the trick and took my mind off of reality for a while. However, the ending could have used some additional questions & answers. The side intrigues were not fully detailed as I would have liked. It was if the author had another idea who, what and why did it, but changed it and forgot to fill in the blanks.

Spoiler Alert: Detective Calid never saw Jacob's body or lack of body to question that part? Was he in on it? Or, was going to be in on it? Was it confirmed that Laurie had an affair or were they all setting each other up. Why'd Dobson get involved with hiding the murder? Maybe these questions were answered, but I was falling asleep, trying to stay awake, at the time.

Jessica Fletcher's just finished a new book and is excited to escape the Maine winter for a tropical getaway with friends on St. Thomas. But all is not as it seems in Laurie and Walter's paradisaical resort, with staff troubles and money troubles aplenty. And when Walter ends up dead on the beach outside Jessica's room, she's drawn into yet another mystery.

This was a fun book, and if you read my reviews, you know I can't resist these things. I enjoyed it, and if you can suspend some disbelief, you might too.

I did like this book. I really did. A nice quick read for a good quick mystery.

But...I was getting increasingly annoyed with Jessica's carelessness and overly invasive questions as the story rolled on and then the boat... well... There were some things I couldn't see Jessica Fletcher in the tv show doing that she did here. However none of this deterred me from liking this book. I look forward to the next one.

Also, when were Mort and Seth best friends as described in the book lol?

This was CHEESY but readable. I don’t recommend it unless you’re in my current situation (living on St. Thomas where this book is set). This actually just made me a little sad, too. The chill vibe is pretty much gone from this island, and there’s a stark contrast to the island that’s depicted in this book to what it is now (because the damn cruise ships and tourists have ruined it but that’s a rant for another day) (if you want a good island vibe in the USVI go to St. Croix).

This is characteristic of the early MSW books in that it is not quite as neatly plotted as later stories. Big loose ends are left dangling at the close of the action. And why is it that so many of the early books end with some kind of unbelievable conspiracy plot? It doesn't work, and damages credibility.

6/10 🤔

I actually enjoyed this one. I am reading them in release order and the author is just starting to get into understanding the character from the TV series and translating her into the book.

There some parts I found repetitive for all the wrong reasons. I also still find the endings a little lacking and not delivering on the investment of the story.
