50 Acts of Kindness

Rate this book
From acclaimed romance author Ellyn Oaksmith comes a novel of change, challenges, and ultimately, kindness...

Being overly kind isn't in Kylie Harrow's nature. This has never been more evident than when Kylie vents her frustrations to an innocent employee—and the whole scene is posted online, tanking her career and earning her the dubious distinction of "World's Worst Boss." But when she flees home to the South, Kylie finds her childhood home has changed. The high school quarterback is now the hot and handsome sheriff. Her mother has turned her home into a nudist colony. And worst of all, having heard about her daughter's exploits, her mother won't let her in the door until Kylie completes fifty kind acts in fifty days.

The task seems easy enough at first—and may even help repair her media image—but it quickly turns into a hilarious quest that leads Kylie down a bumpy road filled with new challenges. What started as a gimmick to save her career evolves into a mission to save a spunky old woman and her little dog from homelessness. As Kylie learns about the nature of kindness, she finds the path to happiness and, for the first time ever, maybe even love.

"Even at her most un-kind, I fell in love with Kylie! Her journey is not only funny and exciting but also heartwarming and inspiring. Ellyn Oaksmith has created one for the keeper shelf!"

Ellyn Oaksmith is the USA Today and Kindle bestselling author of the Blue Hills Vineyard Series, featuring the Alvarez family. The books are set in gorgeous Lake Chelan, in the Pacific Northwest. The series includes Summer at Orchard House (July 13th, 2020) and Promises at Indigo Bay, (September 15th, 2020.) In writing her first series, Ellyn chose a real setting with great meaning for her personally and a fictional family like her own, full of smart, independent, funny women and the men who love them.

After Ellyn funded her graduate studies at the American Film Institute by working on fishing boats in Alaska as cook, she began her writing adventure as a screenwriter in Hollywood. Writing, re-writing and pitching movies to producers and navigating the Los Angeles freeways before Google Maps was a challenge. Meeting movies stars was a surreal and fun perk.

After returning to her native Seattle, Ellyn's first romantic comedy in book form was published by Avon/Harper Collins. Four other romantic comedies with whip smart, ambitious heroines followed before Ellyn joined Bookouture to launch her first series.

She lives in Seattle, Washington with her husband and their polydactyl cat, Forest. Ellyn is an avid competitive rower.

What happens when Kylie ends up on youtube ranting and raving at her pregnant account assistant criticizing her pregnancy and work habits? She loses her job, has to sublet her condo and move back in with her mom in rural North Carolina. In order to work her way back to employment in New York Kylie decides to start a viral campaign to transform her persona from "World's Worst Boss" to a kinder more compassionate Kylie by posting 50 acts of kindness. This turns out to be a journey for both Kylie and everyone who reads his story. I loved this story! It was both humorous and poignant with a shot of romance.

In 50 Acts of Kindness by Ellyn Oaksmith, Kylie Harrow is a high-paid, high-powered marketer on a direct path to the top. So when she gets called into the boss’s office, she expects to get a promotion. What she doesn't expect is to be shown a YouTube video titled “World's Worst Boss” and featuring her yelling at a pregnant woman for all the inconveniences for her that the woman's pregnancy causes, such as having to leave to use the restroom too often. As the video has gone viral, that seals the end of her job. With no company willing to hire Kylie, she has no choice but to go home to North Carolina. But life is not the same at her childhood home. Coming downstairs after her first night, she finds the dining room full of naked people. Her mother has turned Kylie's childhood home into a bed and breakfast as a nudist colony! But the only way her mother will allow Kylie to stay is for her to commit 50 acts of kindness in 50 days.

BEING LABELED UNKIND --- HAS PUT HER IN A BIND

50 acts of kindness by ellyn oatsmith has a heroine that is hard to like at first--- the book opens with kylie harrow meeting with her boss- she thinks it's a promotion - actually she is getting fired- she has been labeled as the world worst boss after a youtube posting of her ranting at a very pregnant assistant goes viral -- suddenly going from the fast track to being blackballed in her occupation forces her to sublet her condo and head back to her hometown where she discovers her mom has opened a very usual B*B - her ex is the sheriff . When she tells her mom her tale of woe instead of taking kylies side- her mom challenges her to perform 50 acts of kindness- kylie figures if she does the acts and uploads them on youtube people will forgive her and she will be back on top--- to speed up the process she decides to help everyone who crosses her path even if they do not want to be helped --- thus begins a journey that started as a dare and soon becomes the road for second chances and redemption-- --- some of the strange and sometimes bizarre situations that kylie finds herself in will have you laughing out loud one minute and crying the next--- so if you are looking for a heroine whose character can be tender- funny - selfish- loving- confused and brusk this is the book for you..... I received an ARC in exchange for posting an honest review

I really enjoyed this novel.

First of all, it was a refreshing change to read a book in this genre with a "different" sort of main character - Kylie would never be described as "sweet" or "naive" - she was aggressive, strong-willed, and kind of mean at first. But she was real, and her character arc was fantastic and believable.

The romance was adorable. Lots of ups and downs and will they/won't they moments. But the other story lines were equally satisfying, from Kylie's attempts to complete the 50 acts of kindness, to her issues with her dad and stepmother, to the nudist colony B&B setting - hilarious. There were a few times I gasped in surprise or choked up in emotion.

I love RomComs with a grand gesture and this one was pretty awesome. But don't take my word for it - read it!

Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. Smart and very funny, it follows Kylie as she is called into see her boss. Kylie assumes it's for a raise or promotion, however reality is somewhat different. The antics that follow are funny and poignant as she faces her past and tries to make sense of her future.

This is a wonderful book that highly recommend.

Thank you to the publisher for providing a complementary ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this one much more than I thought I would! I had found the premise interesting, but was a little turned off at first with the heroine/main female character. She was kind of hard to like, but she really grew on me as did the rest of the story. It really is a sweet story about second chances/redemption. And lots of fun moments, too!

Kylie: Worst Boss Ever....caught on video, bitter, angry New Yorker

Chet: Sheriff in Kylie's small home town, trained EMT, patience of a Saint, wants Kylie flaws and all

50 Acts of Kindness started off a little slow for me, but once she gets into Acts of Kindess thing it picks up pace. She is really really bad at it!! It is painful! This book is wonderfully written to show a woman who went through a painful childhood and became a bitter hateful bitch to someone a lot kinder and notices when someone needs kindness. It shows her growth as well as her reconnecting with her Mother who OMW is a character!! She is a huge surprise!

Chet has a sweet spot for Kylie even with her attitude. He keeps coming back but even he has his limits and she runs the chance of chasing him off for good. Kylie starts making YouTube videos of her 50 Acts just to counter act the bad video of her, but then the videos become her way of expressing herself. They become real. When she meets Margaret things change for Kylie. But the question remains will she want to stay for Chet.

After reading this book it was a beautiful romance but it was also very thought provoking. I couldn't help but wonder how doing my own 50 Acts would affect me. Would I find them hard, easy, would I even finish it. I simply loved how it made me feel after reading as much as it made me feel during the reading. Even a couple weeks later I'm still thinking on it. If I ever get up the nerve to try it I will be sure to let the author know and give her credit. She has hit a spot with this book and with her amazing characters who let me just say have some serious life to them and her very unique story I wont be forgetting it any time soon. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good romance with a lot of thought provoking insight and lots of laughs!

I read this years ago and didn't like it that much, but didn't dislike it either. It was a deal on audible and I gave it another go, and actually enjoyed it more. I have aged and my life perspectives have changed, so I was able to appreciate parts of this book that hadn't spoken to me before. Of course the MC is still super annoying and self centered at times, but she does grow as a character and I liked that.

I truly think this is a book every single person should read! A great book that's well written and who couldn't love Kylie after all! Easy to follow so there's no getting lost of confused! Makes for a wander if this will be the only one or a start to a new series!

Lessons Learned

I liked the story line about working to become a better person something we can all do every day. The only negatives for me in the book are the subtle references to Pres Obama and dems being a good thing. Times are so scary at the moment that ,that politics alone will effect wither I buy a book or not.

Adorable!

What a fun, light-hearted read! Nobody's perfect.....thank goodness! "50 Acts of Kindness" is beautifully written with humor, sincerity and a sense of homecoming so often lacking in our lives. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys laughing, not at others but at their own ability to make ridiculous mistakes and still be ok.

I really loved this book. It is a laugh out loud, and sometimes cry out loud, read. It is a story of a young woman learning many life lessons. I read this book in one sitting and will probably read it again and again. This is a great read for teens to adults.

Kylie Harrow is the “world’s worst boss” according to YouTube after a not so secretly taped video of her berating her assistant goes viral.

Kylie is stunned when the dressing down she gives her subordinate ends with her unceremonious dismissal. Kylie heads back home to wait out her exile. Once there she must try to get along with a mother she doesn’t understand and confront issues from her past that she buried long ago.

50 Acts of Kindness is the story of Kylie’s journey to become a better person by following the steps provided in a book written by her very own mother in which 50 kind acts in 50 days, can change your life.

I found Kylie’s character hard to love, probably just like most people in her life. She’s about as warm and huggable as a porcupine, but she comes by her armor honestly. This story is well told and will tug at your heartstrings. It’s a story anyone who has been hurt can relate to, even if you can’t quite find yourself rooting for Kylie.

This audiobook slide in at just over 10 ½ hours and is narrated by Wendy Rich Stetson. Wendy is quickly becoming one of my favorites in adult women’s fiction. The range of characters she voices are amazing and she does them well regardless of gender or age. The audio quality is subpar. The sound is uneven and there is hissing and pops in the background. It’s noticeable, but doesn’t take away from the enjoyment of this delightful story.

About growth

Kylie (aka Cedar) started out as horrible person. She complained about everything. She belittled everyone and never took responsibility for actions. When horrible action action ended up on YouTube she didn't understand the consequences. She was pretty unlikable through most of the story but what her mother made her do taught her to think of others besides herself.

She’s the worst boss ever. In shame, she returns to NC to find her mom has turned their home into a B&B for nudists. She decides to take on 50 days of random acts of kindness to repair her image but she’s the one who’s fixed instead.

You know it's a good book when...

You just can't put this book down. I just have to say I wish I had a dog like Bat! I want to have a gang like Marcus and I dearly wish I were Margaret 's friend. This is how charming this book is. It was an almost crushing blow when I finished it.

When picking this up I had a hard day at work and just needed to smile. It did so much more than make me smile I found I was laughing out loud think oh no she didn’t what else could go wrong. When your world falls apart and you hit rock bottom what do you do you run home to mother only to find the whole world has went mad.

How can it be so hard to be kind for one women it seem pretty hard. She can’t do anything right even when she tries the hardest. Every time her world falls apart the hot hunk of a sheriff shows up seeing her down fall. Can life get any worse it does seem so for Kylie as she takes you through her day to day act of 50 acts of kindness. Hold on tight as this wonderful author and narrator take you through a trip of laughter, smiles and love that will keep you laughing. This is one audio you will want to listen to over and over again.

Wendy Rich Stetson has a voice I could listen to all day. Her male voices are as wonderful as her female voices. I know when I see her name she is going to deliver a wonderful listen which will keep me entertained. She always gives a clear audio with no background noise as she delivers an even tone with no high or low places. I love her male and female voices they are so rich and clear. You are never guessing who is talking or what emotions they are feeling. The voices fit the ages of the character as well as the person. Ms. Stetson really brought this audio to life for me. No doubt this book is worth reading but the audio blows the book away. The narrator had me hooked from the first page never letting go as I laughed my way through. I found things to do so I could listen and enjoy I didn’t want to put it down. Ms. Stetson is one of go to narrators I know she will always deliver a wonderful listen.

Kylie loses everything when she is labeled the world’s worse boss nationwide. When you hit rock bottom there is only one way and that is up unless your name is Kylie than you find nothing you do is right. I loved this character as she learned and grows into the person she wanted to be. Once she got her act together and started doing things because she wanted to not to get something she truly became a wonderful person with her smart sassy mouth which does get her in trouble. She truly made this a wonderful entertaining read. If things could go wrong they sure did for her no matter how much she tries to give it her all it always seems to back fire on her.

Chet with his easy going ways just make him that much funnier as he tries to keep the peace in this small town. He knows Kylie’s wants to show the world she has changed for all the wrong reason. He is hoping she will come out of her shell and see what is right in front of her face. A wonderful town with a wonderful man. I just loved him from his soft ways to his manly ones. He is truly a knight who could ride up and save me any day. There is nothing not to love about this characters who is the most even tempter man I know.

Sparks fly when Kylie and Chet get together the attraction is strong as these to go head to head again and again. Kylie just can’t keep her mouth shut as she deliveries sassy remarks time and time again which gets her in major trouble. I just loved how he turns the tables on her over and over again getting the last laugh. He loves baiting her and seeing her tempter fly.

This author is new to me when I picked this audio up I wasn’t expecting it to be so entertaining. The author writes a wonderful story with an outstanding plot. She delivers a story that will keep you laughing throughout with scenes that leave you with your mouth open thinking OH NO SHE DIDN’T only to find she sure did. I loved all these characters from her wonderful mother to the crazy cranky old lady. The author deliveries a powerful message that I think we all need to learn again and again. One must do from the heart not to see what they can get. The author gave a lot of thought to this read as she puts her heart into giving you a story that will stay with you for a long time. This is one I will listen/read again and again. If you are looking for a story that is well written, one that will keep you smiling that you can’t put down with a wonderful narrator who gives so much to the listen this is the book for you. I HIGHLY recommend this.
