Veterinarian Greg Evans is better at caring for animals than navigating his own relationships. So when Jasper asks for help in adopting a puppy, it’s just the ice breaker he needs to get his second chance.
After losing Bella, his yellow lab, Jasper’s having a hard time ignoring her absence. In an apartment that feels too big without her, a puppy is exactly what he needs to ease the ache around his heart. The fact he’s had a crush on Greg since the tenth grade doesn’t hurt.
As they prepare for the puppy’s arrival, their twenty-year friendship becomes something more. Jasper’s ready to take things to the next level, but after crossing paths with Greg’s ex one too many times, he can’t help thinking there’s something left between them.
It’s a truth Greg isn’t ready to face, but keeping it close to his chest could cost him more than it’s worth.
Will Greg have the courage to let Jasper in, or will his fears sabotage their friendship for good?
A Fighting Chance is a friends-to-lovers gay romance and the first book in the Wild Hearts universe. This is a standalone novella and includes a HEA with no cliffhangers.
Miya writes gay romance where happily ever afters are hard won but always worth the trouble. She’s a sucker for second chances, friends-to-lovers, and heroes who aren’t afraid to show their softer side.
Outside her writing cave, you can usually spot Miya hiking, taking long walks into town, binge watching an entire series on Netflix, or gaming with her husband.

This is the second chance to love story of Greg and Jasper. This was the debut book by the author and was a ok read for me. The way both the characters behaved in the book, there approach towards each other seemed to me a bit childish. I mean both of them are in there thirties but acted like children. It was a ok read for me.
This could've been good if the author had actually been good at writing but everything happening in this book is being told instead of shown. And a little research would've been good as well. No veterinarian would work the way Greg did.
I forgot I had given this book a try last week. The book was fine, but I wasn't able to get past the fact these men were well into their 30's but acting like teenagers. It just didn't work for me, even with a dog onboard. I prefer the older men in my M/M romance, so this was was a bit like being doused with cold water.

This story features two tropes I love: friends to lovers and second chance at love.
Jasper and Greg have been friends for 20 years. At one point they were best friends, and could have been more, but Jasper didn't want a long distance relationship. They seemed to have drifted apart when Greg went off to college, but now they have a chance to rebuild their relationship.
Jasper's dog died 3 months ago, and Greg is his vet who helped him through the experience. His apartment is empty and quiet, and he feels he's ready to get a new one. He asks Greg for help finding a new pet, and things go from there. After spending some time together, they realize the attraction and feelings they felt for each other back in school was still alive and reciprocal, so they finally become lovers and more.
I really liked this story, but felt it was a little too short and missed some details. We know they've been friends for 20 years, but never mentions how old they are. My guess is late 20s, based on a flashback. I would also wish there was more background on their relationship and reasoning why they didn't try being boyfriends back in high school.
Book Review - A Fighting Chance by Miya Lee - 3 It’s A Dog’s Life Stars
Firstly - if you are not a dog person, this book is not for you.
Secondly - if you think dogs are cute, but can take them or leave them, this book is not for you.
Lastly - if dogs are your world, you live and breathe them, then hello, this book is written with you in mind. You are about to enter doggy heaven, you may cry along the way, but you’ll get your warm and fuzzies in the end.
We join the book as Jasper has to make the difficult decision to put down his dog, then fast forward a few months to where he is thinking about getting a new dog, not to replace her, but to fill some of the void left in his life.
He enlists the help of Greg, his old friend, and vet who he last saw when Bella took her last breath. Greg and Jasper were a nearly couple, at one stage something could have happened but that ship sailed. Now, years later, feelings are still there, and around the whole new dog situation we have a budding relationship.
Now I’m going to refer back to my original list. I fall into category two. I like dogs, don’t have one, don’t mind petting them, but for me, this book OBSESSED over dogs in a way that completely overwhelmed any story about a relationship between the two men. There was no back story build up as to what made them such good friends, a little explanation as to what nearly happened and then the new relationship completely got lost amongst the dogs. All of the warm and fuzzies I normally feel from seeing two people finally get together, especially in a second chance romance, were just not there. I just kind of felt flat and dog-on tired (yes I’m doing dog jokes now, sorry) of reading about our canine friends.
Overall, I was left feeling sad. Not because of anything contained within the story, but that what had the bones to be a good story, was drowned out in doggy tales to make it one that I’m afraid I will only remember for the wrong reasons. That’s a real shame because I felt the writer had the makings of a good story and a good writing style. They just lacked the balance that was needed to take this story to appeal to the masses, and not just those who share snacks and beds with their doggy friends.
I DNFed at 54%. I just couldn't connect with the characters or the story. I know a lot of this lies squarely on my own shoulders, because as much as I sympathize with these two men that lost their beloved pets, I'm not sure the amount of drama surrounding it worked for me. Their grief felt real but the subsequent behavior didn't feel à propos. It felt off and I found myself going, "Really? That's the big secret?" I know that makes ME the heartless bitch here.
The other thing bothering me is that Greg and Jasper supposedly had some long lasting attraction stemming from high school. Other than one shared kiss, there was no infusion of tender emotions, sexual tension; no sense of nostalgia to make the idea of them having unresolved feelings for each other, ring true. In fact, the first half of the book reads like a manual on how to adopt the right dog for you. I see a lot of really high ratings and good reviews here, so, again, I admit some it is me. The me that understands sadness and grief, but didn't get the melodrama surrounding Jasper and Greg.
I was given a copy of this book free by the author in exchange for an unbiased review.
Jasper and Greg are friends. They were close friends up until the time Greg went away to college and never got past the friends stage. They reconnected after Jasper's dog, Bella became ill and Greg is helping him to get over the loss.
I enjoyed this book. It was very easy to read. The relationship between the two MCs did develop quickly and there was no angst between it. I am not sure the issue Greg didn't want to talk about, although sad, wasn't really something to stand in his way of relationship with Jasper.
I liked the way that Greg was a vet to the local animal shelter and hopefully that might bring more awareness to the animals that need to be adopted. One small thing though as Greg was always with Jasper I tended to worry about his 6 cats and then when he suggested moving in together, I thought, Oh Boy! 6 cats and a puppy, what a mixture.
All in all though a really nice read and I hope we will be able to visit with the guys further into their relationship.

The over top melodrama was what bumped this down to a two star rating for me. It feels callous to say that, given most of the dramatics were surrounding the loss of pets, but a lot of it didn't feel like real people talking and grieving over loss.
That in itself was a shame, because the romance itself held a lot of potential. Greg and Jasper as lifelong friends turning their relationship into more were compelling. There were times when the details of the past relationship were unclear, however I was reading an earlier ARC copy, and have been advised some of those details have since been cleared up. The parts of the novel I liked best was when they were simply hanging out as friends, getting to know each other and develop their relationship.
The sex was hot and enjoyable, but by that time the book had lost a lot of my attention and I ended up skimming my way through the last 40-45% of it.
*Now written under Devon Cross. Jasper still grieving his beloved deceased dog is reluctantly ready to move on to a new dog with help of his friend Veterinarian Greg. This is definitely a doggie story. There’s almost more about the dogs than the actual romance. I have mixed feelings about this tale. It felt a bit contrived. I understand about Jasper’s grief but the drama surrounding Greg seemed a bit over-the-top, a bit odd. An okay read.
A Fighting Chance by Miya Lee was a cute read about second chances. It’s technically a standalone, but is part of her Wild Heart universe.
I’m a fan of second chance romances. There’s something extremely gratifying about reading about couples who made mistakes or walked away in the past but get another opportunity to fall in love. Gives hope to the rest of us schmucks, ya know?
Greg and Jasper have been friends (well, they’ve known each other) for something like twenty years. When Greg helped Jasper through a really tough time, they reconnected. I think. You see, things are a bit murky on how much time they spent together before the book began. Friends don’t generally need to get each other’s numbers out of sympathy cards.
Which brings me to my biggest complaint with this book: it was disjointed in places. The pacing and the timeline were confusing to follow at times and this made it difficult for me to become invested in the characters or their relationship.
I liked both characters, especially Jasper with his need to fix things. But, there needed to be more building of them and their relationship.
For a debut book, though, I’ll give her some leeway. In the future, I hope her critique partners or beta readers help her work on making her story flow a bit better.
While a bit clunky in parts, A Fighting Chance offers glimpses of Miya Lee’s talent. There are interesting secondary characters and some decent conflict. I’ll be checking out more of her work in the future.

A Fighting Chance by Miya Lee This was a lovely sweet story of two men who are both broken in their own ways over the deaths of their respective pets. The first man- Jasper is a shy construction worker who has maybe a bit of OCD and has to fix every roof and porch in need of repair, reconnects with the man he fell in love with years ago. He is leery of reaching out to his first love Gary who is now the local veterinarian, but needs his help when his beloved yellow lab, Bella becomes so sick that he needs to help her out of her misery. He then is afraid to reach out to Gary even in friendship because he doesn’t know if his heart can take anymore hurt. The other man- Gary, is hopeful that the man he left when he went off to college to become a veterinarian, will reach out because he just can’t get Jasper off of his mind. He wants to build a relationship, but will settle for friendship if only Jasper will call. Jasper doesn’t know that Gary is just as damaged as he is over the death of a puppy that he blames himself for not being able to save. As he always does, to bury his pain, Gary throws himself into his work. The long hours already destroyed one relationship, and I was on pins and needles wondering if it would destroy this budding new one before it even had a chance to get off the ground. It was a joy to watch Jasper come out of his shell and bond with Gary, helping each other heal and find peace together through volunteering at the local no-kill animal shelter. Jasper suffers through the loss of his dog at the beginning of the book and he struggles with trying to move on. He wants another dog but is afraid to move on. Greg is Jasper's vet, but we find out that 20 years ago they were friends on the verge of possibly something more. There is attraction there, and once Jasper emerges from his doggie depression, he reaches out to Greg for advice on getting a new dog, and they become close.
I did find it weird a little as I read when they talked about how they had been friends for so long. I didn't get the impression at the beginning that they had been good friends over the last 20 years. It seemed like it was more when they were younger, but then references were made about being friends for so long. It threw me off and took me a while to reconcile the statements with the past versus present (example: Jasper knew nothing about Greg's most recent relationship that was only over for 6 months or so). Regardless, they did have good chemistry when they were together. Once they decided to move forward with being together, they both jumped in with both feet.
I enjoyed the story. I liked reading about the puppies and Greg was such a sweetheart. I would love to read a book about Rob. He seemed like a nice guy who needs to find his HEA also.
I received a copy of his book in exchange for an honest review.
Jasper has lost the love of his life, his yellow lab Bella. By his side through the whole thing was his childhood friend and veterinarian Greg Evans. Greg is great with animals but not so much with relationships in his own life.
Now ready to think about adopting another dog, Jasper is in need of Greg's help in the adoption process. With there always being something between them and a kiss that rocked both their worlds right before college and a secret Greg refuses to open up about, can Jasper and Greg find their happiness in this world? If Greg doesn't open up will it sabotage them before they even find their way to happily ever after?
This book is a m/m romance with secrets, puppies and a lot of heat. The chemistry between Jasper and Greg is so strong you can feel it right through the pages of the book. I devoured this book in one sitting and really enjoyed every second of it. It's about love, loss, letting go, and finding your way home.
Reading this is kind of timely as my husband and I are helping his mother look for a dog at local rescues as a companion due to the loss of her husband a few months ago.
Greg is a vet who has recently broken up with his boyfriend, due to a tragedy he won't talk about. Jasper recently lost his beloved dog. He and Greg were best friends in high school, but things cooled off when Greg went to college and Jasper did not. They've stayed friendly over the years, but not close. Jasper asks Greg to help him find another dog. He finds a recently born female lab, and decides to adopt her once she is old enough. Greg has an odd reaction, but decided to help Jasper anyway. Despite the years, they have both always loved each other. Can they help each other work through the pain of loss and another possible tragedy?
Well written with enough of Greg not wanting to talk, which frustrates Jasper and the reader. I stayed up late and couldn't put it down until I found out what happened to Greg and his ex.
This book is a very sweet read. I loved the fact that two old friends are brought back together because of the loss of a pet. Jasper had lost his beloved Bella, and his old friend Greg was the vet who helped him through it. They had known each other since they were in school, but had drifted apart after Greg went off to college and Jasper had stayed in their hometown. Greg is carrying some baggage from his last relationship, and this could threaten Jasper and his chance at a new beginning. When Jasper is ready to look for a new dog, Greg is there to help. Things get tense, and an ex might just derail what they are beginning. This book is a great short read, it can be read in one sitting. It has an HEA with no cliffhanger, so it is the perfect book for an afternoon read. The love story is sweet and there is some tension when bad things happen, so it keeps your attention all the way through. The only thing I wished was that there would have been better closure between Greg and his ex.

This was a really cute book that has loss of a beloved pet and he clearly wants to move on but was struggling. I felt the author brought those feelings to the forefront and really made me believe. I had an immediate connection with Greg and Jasper and could clearly feel the love beginning to blossom between them and loved how they were able to reconnect. The author did an excellent job with describing those feelings. However, the author was a little unclear as to their past relationship/friendship but it didn't distract from the overall story too much. Overall a rally good book for a new author and would definitely recommend this book, especially to people who love dogs.

3.5 stars!!!
I really really love a GOOD m/m romance, and i had high expectations for this one knowing that it involved dogs and i love dogs. I liked it but i didn't loved it, i think it was missing some of the back story between the relationship of jasper and greg, and i also think it missed some sort of development in their relationship, because you are being told that they know each other for 20 years but their relationship seemed like they just meet each other in the beginning of the book.
Other that that it is a well written book and a fast read. I also loved that the author involved dogs in the story!!!
M/M second chances romance between childhood friends, one a animal Vet who went away for college and the other a construction worker that stayed home. Jasper has just lots his beloved dog while he is dealing with his feelings for his Veterinarian, Greg Evans. Jasper is ready to find a new dog to love while getting closer to Greg and past secrets get out while falling in love. I don't get why they wait so long to get together when they live in the same town again, but I guess sometimes being alone is comfortable in its inertia. Cute little fluff story. 148 pages and kindle freebie 3 stars
*ARC provided by the author in exchange of an honest review* I thought it was a really sweet story. A fast read. But for me i think it is missing something i don't know a certain je ne sais quoi. the mutual attraction between the two....the built up. I would have like to know more about their past relationship...how the two were in college. I had high expectations about this book. There is no Big Drama or anything and Greg aNd Rob i wanted to know more. Anyway it was a cute story.
I liked this book but while reading it I didn't get the feeling it was a friends to lovers story, it felt like something was missing. The connection that should have been there from childhood was missing. That being said I loved that Jasper is a slightly OCD construction worker and Greg is a veterinarian with a collection of cats. This was a quick read with two MC's that fit well together and had low angst.
I was gifted this Arc to write an honest review. I loved the fact that both guys have known each other for a lot time and where friends first before becoming loves. To me the best lover you can have is one that was a friend first or turns in to your best friend. I love the added element of Jasper getting a new puppy after losing his 4 legged best friend and asking Greg for advice. it was a sweet story and I'm looking forward to another one in the series.
I received a copy of this book for my honest review. This is a new author to me and I knew nothing about this book prior to reading it .... I loved it. It was a quiet start but picked up and kept my interest till the end. It has lots to like about it, two friends who fell in lust with each other but drifted apart and then came back together for the love of each other and a dog. It was a fun read, I laughed out loud, shed a tear and just enjoyed the entire book.
If your looking for a mushy boy story then this isn't for you. This book is a very mature book about two grown men going through real life and being there for each other. Greg and Jasper has known each other for years but have never been in a relationship with each other. This story brings you into their lives, their heartaches and new romance. I was gifted this book for an honest review and it is a must read
Let me start by saying I love Labradors. They are my favourite breed of dogs. This was a great read. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. I would have liked to have seen more backstory on Jasper and Greg's friendship. Apart from that it is a great book. I laughed, I cried, I enjoyed it. Would love to read more by this author. Definitely recommend reading this book. *ARC provided by author in exchange for an honest review*
A sweet tale of 2 men coming together after a tragedy. When Jasper's dog dies, Greg is there for him as a vet and a lifelong friend. As Jasper heals and prepares to get a new dog, he reaches out to Greg and they fall in love. Sweet story perfect for the ebach or a relaxing weekend.
Took only a few short hours to read, but it packed a punch. Nice storyline about second chances. Good, strong characters, easy to visualize descriptions to details, flowing dialogue and all in all, a good read.
