Dr. Seaman coined the term “DeFlame” as a simple educational tool to help better understand the benefits of eating healthy anti-inflammatory foods, especially in the context of replacing pro-inflammatory foods with anti-inflammatory vegetables, fruit, nuts, and roots/tubers. He first identified that diet promotes inflammation based on research published in the 1970s and 1980s. Most have only begun to see this relationship in recent years. In contrast, Dr. Seaman has written multiple articles and chapters on this topic over the past 25 years. The DeFlame Diet is about eating anti-inflammatory foods to turn off the chronic disease-promoting “flame” created by pro-inflammatory foods. This is the first nutrition book for the general public that delves into inflammation in great detail, yet in a fashion that is understandable. Readers will never be confused again about what foods we should and should not be eating.
This book provides an outstanding look at the WHY behind reducing inflammation through diet. There are hundreds of citations throughout the book to reference David Seaman's assertions, and while I did not agree with 100% of his viewpoints (e.g. no one likes beans or bothers to cook them properly so they are not on the "approved" list) I found the information enormously helpful in launching my own research into this topic.
It is worth noting that my spouse and I started this eating plan for his worsening back pain due to osteoarthritis. We thought we were reasonably healthy people prior to this diet. We ate a lot of vegetables, whole grains, lean meat and were not considered overweight. After 30 days following the diet, my husband has lost 10 pounds and is beginning to see some reduction in pain. What has shocked me is the minor irritations of my midlife have vanished: UTI, hot flashes, insomnia. Gone.
This is NOT a cookbook and probably not of interest to those who just want a top 10 list - all that is readily available with a Google search.
This book is absolutely full of science-backed information regarding minimizing the inflammation in your body. I recommend this book to everybody, as the information is relevant to all people, regardless of current health situation. It can be a little heavy for the lay person in a few places, but Dr. Seaman addresses pretty much every question I get from my patients with sound, science-backed reasoning.
I read every word of this book and followed the diet described therein. It brought clear and significant health benefits to me! I did have to ignore much of the advice of my MD doctors and the nurse.
comprehensive overview of how to make food choices to reduce inflammation in your body. The book includes extremely thorough scientific information, and is clearly written.
Great scientific info, but may be a little too scientific for some…took me awhile to get through it. However, I love all the information I have learned.
