Things Like That Never Happen Here.

The townsfolk of Black Dog wrapped themselves in that sentiment like a security blanket. Being part of the tight-knit, small town shielded them from the horror that plagued the evening news.

And then something happened.

It happened fast. People got sick. People got violent. People died.

But the hunger lived on.

Day Two: Evil Urges

Melanie Carpenter has fears. One being the dark. And the power just went out in Black Dog. Her boyfriend is missing and Melanie has no idea of the evil lurking outside her door.

With evil Clown Mask Action!

Day 2 in Day Two: Evil Urges of The Last Five Days introduces us to Melanie Carpenter who after graduating from college, moved to Black Dog because a small town represented safety and security in her life. As a student, Melanie had been robbed at gunpoint by two men wearing clown masks while walking home from class one night. She’d begged for her life while the two men laughed at her and she’s never fully gotten over the terror of what happened. Now, apparently immune to the virus decimating the town, she is trapped in her safe place, the military keeping everyone in the town from leaving, abandoned and on her own, left to die at the hands of her zombie-like, flesh-craving friends and neighbors.

However, among those still unaffected by the disease, is tall and handsome Dean Kurten, one of Black Dog’s newest residents. Melanie had met Dean at the local diner, Luther’s, and they’d been dating for the last 3 months. Melanie is overjoyed when Dean suddenly arrives at her home, ready to protect her. But Dean is still much of a mystery man to her, and is not all that he initially seemed to be. Melanie escapes when he proves to be more of a danger than what lurks outside.

Meanwhile, Winston Fleming is at his home with his virus-infected wife, Marianna, who he has confined in the spare bedroom. He hopes to keep her safe and secluded until a cure for the virus has been developed. When the power begins to fail, Winston sets out from the house to find fuel for his generator. He runs across Melanie as she tries to evade her evil boyfriend.

This is the 2nd day (part) of the five day (part) novel, The Last Five Days by Paul Seiple. Nice guy, Winston Fleming, now has a healthy ally in Melanie Carpenter. The story was exciting enough with just the virus wreaking havoc on the small community of Black Dog but add in the psychopathic Dean Kurten (and clown masks) and things really kick up a notch. If you’re a fan of zombie/pandemic tales I would highly recommend you taking the time to check this one out!
