Joshua, Judges, and Ruth: Finally in the Land

Rate this book
It took more than forty years of wandering, but finally the nation of Israel was ready to enter the land that God had promised them. However, they knew that arriving at the borders was just the beginning, for many battles and many foes still lay ahead. Yet, as Joshua reminded them, they also knew that the Lord had promised to fight all their battles and defeat their foes—through His power, and not their own.

In this study, pastor John MacArthur will guide you through an in-depth look at the Israelites' conquest of the Promised Land, beginning with the miraculous parting of the Jordan River, continuing through the victories and setbacks as the people settled into Canaan, and concluding with the time of the judges.

Studies include close-up examinations of Rahab, Ruth, and Samson, as well as careful considerations of doctrinal themes such as "The Sin of Achan" and the role of "The Kinsman Redeemer."

Overall this was a helpful guide through some OT books that I probably would have struggled to read without commentary. I enjoyed the layout- read the text, read brief commentary over the text, then answer questions. It was also helpful to go through this study with others.

My main critique is that several chapters from Joshua & Judges were skipped. While I understand the reasoning, I wish they would have been covered at least broadly. The chapters skipped were ones that were repetitive, such as land inheritances, and while these may not have direct spiritual applications, I would like to have been given some context & commentary on these passages to understand their relevance to God’s Word as a whole. Smaller critiques are that some of the questions I found to be very basic (could be great for new believers) and I didn’t fully agree with the dispensationalist references 😏

Very good for a deeper understanding of the three books.

Although I really liked the book, I just wish there was more (commentary) content by John MacArthur. The content at the end of each chapter was gold! But there just was not enough of it. It seemed like 80% of the book was taken from JM's Study Bible notes. Since it is a study guide JM asked thoughtful questions. However it would have been even better had he answered his own questions. I felt like this book gave me a taste of a deeper meaning of the scriptures and I ended each chapter wanting more. This is my third book in the series and I'm not sure if I will continue because I feel like I'm just rereading the study Bible notes.
