Για αιώνες έλεγα ιστορίες άλλων. Τώρα ήρθε η ώρα να πω τη δική μου. Την ιστορία των περιπετειών μου μέχρι να φτάσω σ’ αυτό το ράφι. Μου τσάκισαν τις σελίδες. Γέλασαν μαζί μου. Έκλαψαν μαζί μου. Μ’ απαγόρευσαν και μ’ έκαψαν. Μ’ έθαψαν στην έρημο. Είδα την ακμή και την πτώση πολιτισμών. Μα επέζησα. Και θα δεις, αγαπητέ αναγνώστη, ότι η ιστορία μου είναι όντως συναρπαστική.

About the author
John Agard

He has worked as an actor and a performer with a jazz group and spent several years as a lecturer for the Commonwealth Institute, travelling all over Britain giving talks, performances and workshops. He has visited literally thousands of schools and enjoys the live contact and the joy of children responding although it can be hard work.
John Agard started writing poems when he was about 16 - some of these early efforts were published in his school magazine. Many of his poems now are composed while looking out of train windows.

It is in his poetry that John Agard makes his greatest contribution to children's literature. Like the best authors, he brings something unique to children's experience - a view of the world tempered by his own childhood, a feeling for the rhythms and cadences of its language, and a sophisticated understanding of the advantages and limitations of several forms of English. That he can make the "standard" forms work superbly is evident from many of his poems for adults. For children, with whom he communicates more directly, the lyrical Guyanese forms serve his purposes to perfection.

He is more interested in the ideas and words he is delivering to them than in the creation of complex fictional characters with whom his readers might engage. Libro me ha parecido muy original y me llamó mucho la atención que un libro te cuente la historia del libro, pintaba muy interesante y así ha sido. Además de que a la historia le acompañan ilustraciones junto con citas que lo hace más especial aún. Y esa combinación me ha gustado mucho porque lo veo muy atractivo para los niños y los no tan niños.
Lo que más me ha gustado es la forma que tiene el autor de contarte la historia del libro porque lo hace como si fuera el propio libro el que te está contando la historia y lo hace de una forma muy amena y divertida. Me ha sorprendido mucho. Además hay que añadirle que es un libro didáctico con el que aprendes cosas nuevas sobre el libro y al mismo tiempo que te diviertes leyéndolo. Yo he descubierto muchas cosas que no sabía sobre nuestro gran amigo “El libro”. La verdad que me ha gustado mucho conocer la historia del libro de esta forma y lo he disfrutado como una niña chica.
Y ya os aviso que se lee un ratito, una vez lo empiezas no puedes acabar. Es de esos libros perfectos para leer entre lecturas y para desconectar después de un largo día.
En resumen, Libro es una novela Middle Grade que nos cuenta la historia del libro: desde que nació hasta el libro electrónico. Y es un libro tan especial que os lo recomiendo a todos.

Un libro increíble, inteligente y muy, muy curioso. Ha sido terminarlo y empezar a recomendárselo a gente de mi alrededor.
Es algo arriesgado escribir un libro como si fueras un libro hablando de los libros. Pero el autor consigue hacerlo fantásticamente, ordenando los eventos de manera cronológica y con un encanto único. Además, la edición es de lujo, llena de citas e ilustraciones que acompañan perfectamente el contenido. ¡Maravilloso!
Es algo arriesgado escribir un libro como si fueras un libro hablando de los libros. Pero el autor consigue hacerlo fantásticamente, ordenando los eventos de manera cronológica y con un encanto único. The book is very interesting. The “Book” is personified and is speaking for itself and it’s talking about its timeline in an interesting and attractive way. It’s like “Book” is speaking face to face with the reader in a funny way! Excellent choice of view point to write.

“And believe me, it felt good to be so portable. Not only was I a carrier of the imagination, influencing the world of ideas, but I could be carried across continents in a bag or a briefcase.”
“Never mind. I, Book, know how to be patient. One day a hand will reach for me and take me to the counter to be stamped. Checked out and, we hope, returned.”
The language is easy, smooth and fast. It’s a one sitting type of book! The reader will find useful information about the initiative and development of the stages of the origin of paper and how the book reached its current state. The reader will also get to know the countries and the first inventors that contributed to the existence of books. Each chapter ends with uncommon quotes that I liked so much about writing and books. One of my favourites is: “ It was from my early experience that I decided there was no use to which money could be applied so productive of good to boys and girls who have good within them and ability and ambition to develop it, as the founding of a public library.” ~ Andrew Carnegie. Although it is small and I finished it really fast I enjoyed reading it and I will definitely come back to it and recommend it to readers. Definitely 5 stars book! I give the fifth star to a book that writes with playful language, uses metaphors in an interesting and attractive style in delivering the desired message.

Book is a really different and interesting little read. It follows the history of the written word from stone tablet through to ereader in a really cute way. As a book lover I enjoyed it. As a social historian I loved it as you saw the impact the development of the written word had on the development of society.

Le doy 4 estrellas bien merecidas a Libro. Me encantan los libros para niños. La verdad me esperaba algo totalmente diferente, algo más como un cuento. Resultó ser la historia de cómo la literatura evolucionó hasta llegar al libro actual e incluso electrónico, contada de una manera divertida por el mismo libro, hablando en primera persona.
Aunque sea un libro para niños me parece que cualquiera puede disfrutarlo, me resultó bastante informativo, aprendí muchísimo sobre la creación del libro e historia sobre la escritura y lectura. Alimenta tu amor por los libros.
Es un libro muy pequeño y lo recomiendo mucho si te sientes en un bloqueo de lector, que para eso me sirvió bastante.
Aunque sea un libro para niños me parece que cualquiera puede disfrutarlo, me resultó bastante informativo, aprendí muchísimo sobre la creación del libro e historia sobre la escritura y lectura. Alimenta tu amor por los libros.

Partiendo de la base de que no soy el público objetivo de este libro (está dirigido a niños a partir de 9 años o así) debo reconocer que me ha parecido muy entretenido e interesante de leer.
Nos cuenta la historia del libro y su evolución con el propio Libro como narrador, utiliza un lenguaje muy sencillo y continuamente interactúa con el lector por lo que me pareció una forma muy amena de que los niños conozcan de donde vienen los libros y cómo han ido cambiando a lo largo del tiempo. Personalmente he echado en falta un poquito más de desarrollo en algunas partes pero aún así me pareció un buen libro para la edad a la que va dirigido.

If you know me, I love books about books! When I first saw this at a bookstore a couple of weeks ago, I was intrigued and excited. Book (alternatively published as My Name is Book) is a succinct summary of the history of books, as narrated by the book himself! The illustrations and quotes are great! While I largely knew most of the history, I did learn some new bits.

Très bel ouvrage introductif jeunesse sur l'apparition du livre dans l'activité humaine. S'adresse aux enfants, mais donne des pistes de départ aux adultes qui souhaiteront faire une recherche plus approfondie sur l'histoire du livre.
Ce que j'ai moins apprécié sont les citations ajoutées à différents moments du livre, ce qui entrecoupent la continuité du texte.

En baştan söyleyeyim: kitabı çok da beğendiğimi söyleyemem. Kitabın beğendiğim tek noktası dili oldu. Sanki gerçekten kitabı dinliyormuş gibiydim.
Kitap; kitabın yıllardan yıla nasıl bir evrim geçirdiğini, neler yaşadığını dile getiriyor. Elbette kitabın beğendiğim kısımları da oldu ama bu kitabın 3 yıldızdan fazlasını hak ettiğini düşünmüyorum. Şiddetle de tavsiye edemiyorum ama dilinden dolayı deneyebilirsiniz.

Tam anlamıyla acayip sevimli bir kitaptı.Kitabın geçmişten günümüze hikayesini anlatıyor.Bir oturuşta bitirebileceğiniz ve okurken gülümseten kitaplardan.Epey bilgilendirici,gerçi çoğunu daha önceden bildiğimiz şeyler ama bazı bölümler beni epey şaşırttı.Geçmişte kitapların masalara zincirlendiğini bilmiyordum.Artık ne kadar nadide ve değerliyse.Kafa dağıtmak için güzel bir seçim oldu.

En un par de días devoré este pequeño gran libro! Un libro que cuenta su propia historia. Tomado de un estante, lleno de marca páginas, me ha hecho pasar buenísimos ratos como hacía tiempo no me pasaba. Explicando su evolución a través de las civilizaciones. Os aviso…que si lo empezáis a leer no podréis parar!

This was such a cute, funny read. It was from the perspective of a book, and it told the story of books. Imagine like your toddler telling a story, but they have the intelligence of a 30 year old. The immaturity of this book is hilarious and amusing. Any reader should read this book.

Short but interesting history of writing. I'm not sure how well this will go over with a younger audience, but as an adult reader I found it enjoyable enough.
