Lady Helen Finds Her Song

Rate this book
Spring 1813
The exotic splendors of India are legendary, and the colorful sights of her new home in Calcutta immediately captivate eighteen-year-old Lady Helen Poulter. Whereas many of her fellow British expatriates despise the culture they see as barbaric, Helen sees excitement in the unusual locale. It is in this vibrant, bustling city that she finds a kindred soul in Captain Michael Rhodes, an Englishman whose lifelong love of India runs deep. Their friendship quickly grows, yet despite their undeniable connection, she could never think of Captain Rhodes as more than a dear friend.

Her love, in truth, has been captured by dashing British Lieutenant Arthur Bancroft. This handsome soldier represents the embodiment of all she's dreamed of in a husband. Preoccupied by her growing affections, Helen never dreams that beneath the glamor of the city, hostilities are reaching a boiling point. When battle ultimately threatens both of the men in her life, she must make a choice: pursue the man who symbolizes her British past, or let herself love a man who promises an unknown future in the land she loves. But amid the casualties of war, will her declaration of love come too late?

"Lady Helen Finds Her Song" is a fantastic Regency romance taking place in early 19th century India. The writing was quite descriptive and immersed me in the sights, sounds, and smells of India that Lady Helen slowly discovers. I also enjoyed the exploration and examples of the clash of cultures that are woven throughout the novel.

However, I must confess that it was Lady Helen and her Captain Rhodes that kept me totally enraptured. I was actually reminded of how much they made me feel exactly as I did when I read "Sense and Sensibility" for the first time. I just couldn't get enough of them as the story progressed!

This was my first Jennifer Moore book, but I will be watching out for her future books.

You know the Pringles add that says "Once You Pop, You can't STOP" ? Ummmm, well yeah, that's me with Jennifer Moore novels. Seriously! Once I pop open the cover of one I have no desire to do anything else but read from cover to cover as fast as humanly possible to devour EVERYTHING within about the book and characters. So not healthy for me(probably healthier than popping open a can(s) of Pringles though and in my opinion probably a whole lot tastier-I do love Pringles though)!!!! But it doesn't stop there, one can(book) is just not enough! I've had a taste and I NEED/MUST HAVE more! So what do I do? I grab another book, and another book, and another until I've read all that I can get my hands on. So not healthy but very enjoyable! ;-)

I've had this book sitting on my bedside table since summer time. It was a birthday present I picked out from my husband. *.* (He took me to the book store and gave me my limit of how many books and I handed him my top picks-and usually get an extra one because he loves me and knows we don't get to that favorite book store but once a year-Love you lots Babe and Happy Birthday to ME!!!!!!!!) So after reading my little Pringles popping rant above and learning that I've had this book on my bedside table you're probably thinking, what took you so long to pop it open? Well I've been trying save it because I knew how much I would love it and I just didn't want to part with my final birthday book. That may sound funny but it is what it is. I also knew that I just wanted to grab it and gobble it up as fast as possible. So two conflicting emotions and myriads of review books and I put it off.

This week I've been down doing pretty much absolutely nothing but sleeping as much as humanly possible and reading when I can't sleep because I've had a nasty infection in my lungs. >.< Yucky!!! So as I was finishing other books, I looked up at my bookshelf and what did I see? Becoming Lady Lockwood. I haven't read it in forever so I grabbed it and devoured it in a couple hours...yep I did!!! It was wonderful! So what do I do next? As I am writing reviews and perusing NetGalley I see her new book A Place for Miss Snow, I place a request for it and guess what I now have a copy of it to read and review. So I decided I absolutely had to read Lady Helen's book before Miss Snow's. Oh my heavens and my heart! <33333333

Jennifer Moore is wonderful and knows how to take a single word and add many more words together in just the right combination to make a beautiful, well written story with wonderful characters. *sigh* I love Lady Helen, love her! She's beautiful and kind and the epitome of absolute goodness. I love how as a reader you are able to read, yet feel as if you are experiencing and enjoying her wonders and new experiences with her instead of being told by the author how to feel and what to experience. Her awe, wonder and enjoyment of everything new around her as she first arrives in India is so fun. Very captivating and it left me wishing I was right there with her, although in all honesty I did feel right there with her.

I enjoyed reading about Lady Helen and her two suitors. One who was more forward than the other, yet the more quiet and dependable one was perfect. The book switches perspective between Lady Helen and one of the suitors and I loved delving into their different thoughts and learning about their backgrounds.

It's interesting how one moment we see something and feel such a strong desire or connection towards it that we set our sights on it and believe it is what's best for us. Yet over time we realize that what felt fun and wonderful and was highly enticing, in all reality truly isn't what it originally appeared to be. Yet other times something can truly be all that it seems to be and more. Just a little thought for you to think about while reading this novel.

I haven't really said much about the actually book except Lady Helen and her two suitors so here's some of the excitement that awaits you as you pop this book open.

Tigers, traveling on water, Elephants, color, flowers, cobras, beautiful gowns, scorpions, an Indian Prince, jungles, leopards, midnight picnics, horse rides, dust, heat, rain, Indian culture, castes, servants, friends, family, jewelry, love, terror, danger and peril, heartache, wounds, fevers, embarrassment, joy, sweet kisses, deep eye locking stares, garden walks, mosquito netting, sounds, music, piano, heart pounding(the characters and maybe yours), petty women, strong women, true love.

I'm sure there's much, much more to that list but those are all I'm going to add for now. Grab it, pop it open(only when the timing is conducive to not stopping), and don't stop until it's finished!

This is a very sweet, clean and lovely read.

This was my own personal copy.

Happy Reading!!!

I loved this unique Regency reading experience! The setting of India was a character in itself, and the authors descriptions were vibrant and blended in to the narrative without becoming overlong. Seeing the country and culture through Helen's experiences added a feeling of wonder and appreciation since she savors the new and interesting aspects of her journey. She begins somewhat naive, but because of her observant and open nature she embraces the differences. Her friendship with Captain Rhodes helps her to become more confident since he has a deep love for India and they feel a connection. She is musical and has developed melodies representing members of her family. She hasn't been able to write one for herself however, and hopes to discover her song on this life-changing journey. I also enjoyed the gentle romance between Helen's mother and stepfather that serves as an example to Helen of what it means to love. A beautiful story of discovering what is truly important.

Jennifer Moore's very descriptive so it's easy to picture the story as you read. Lady Helen is a young woman (she's only 20) goes with her mother and step-father, who is a General, to his new station in Calcutta, India in 1813. She learns about the customs and the people from Captain Rhodes, the General's right hand man. Lady Helen is different from some other young women her age, she's more serious, kind, and cares about people and their feelings. She plays the piano and her step-father has one brought to their home in Calcutta. We find out she has a melody, or song, for all the members of her family, except for herself, which she will discover before the book ends. You also find out a little about her mother's deceased husband, how she met her new husband (the General), and how their love story effects Helen.
I loved this story and stayed up late at night to finish it. I could wait to see if it ended how I imagined.

Growing up in England, during school I learned a fair amount regarding British rule in India, during the days of the Empire. It wasn't something I particularly enjoyed, nor was India a place I could imagine I'd want to visit. Along with that I tend to also avoid stories set in this location & era. However, Jennifer Moore writes consistently well, and it was enough to persuade me to give 'Lady Helen Finds Her Song' a try. I actually found the parallels between my own feelings about India, and those of the ladies as they arrive on the boat to be similar. It created a connection, that developed into intrigue & interest as Jennifer tells this story with such attention to detail, it leaves you being 'Wowed' by the sheer effort she must have put into researching and writing this novel! Such a delight to read, the final few chapters are worth the wait, and the genuine approach that both Lady Helen & Captain Rhodes feel towards India is 'enlightening' to the reader. I learnt a lot from this book, a new gratitude for my own history & a renewed sense that Jennifer Moore is one of the best LDS historical fiction writers out there. I also enjoyed the small snippets in which there is a nod towards God, no matter how you worship Him, no matter your religion. Sometimes I feel it's a little bit lacking in the LDS book market. Many Christian writers include inspirational messages within their novels, and it is something I enjoy & appreciate. Who can not love a spiritual boost within the pages of a wonderful novel?!

Great read, thanks to Netgalley & Covenant Communications for the digital copy in return for my honest review.

Helen has just arrived in India with her mother and stepfather, she is overwhelmed and interested in everything she sees, upon arriving she meets two army officers who work under her stepfather's command, as she gets to know them and to know India, she finds herself.

The plot in itself was good and solid, I liked Captain Rhodes from the beginning and found myself cheering for him.
Helen is an interesting character who is open to change and other cultures. I liked that her feelings for Michael grew gradually.

The setting was very interesting and very well described. The author describes the travels and places and culture beautifully.

Unfortunately, the plot didn't do the exotic location any justice. The plot could have happened anywhere, which left me disappointed. I was eager for some adventure instead l got a slow paced romance.

Also even though the author have done some research, she obviously didn't do enough.
The Muslim servant has an obviously hindu name, Basu Ram.
And then she gives a character a Muslim name, Shah Ahsan Ali, and talks about his mother being suttee (sati) a known hindu practice! Sati is easily researched and has been mentioned in many Indian related fiction (The Far Pavilions - Heat and Dust - Around the world in Eighty Days)
Even though I enjoyed the Indian setting I was a bit in doubt about the accuracy - like the Palace having minarets!!??
Which in turn affected the overall enjoyment of the book.

Once again, Jennifer Moore demonstrates her versatility as a regency romance author. This time, Moore takes us to the heart of colonial India, where the young Lady Helen finds herself immersed in the wonder and awe of this strange new land. Along the way, she meets a dashing lieutenant and a sensitive Captain, each eager to catch her eye.

Though I was hoping this book would delve more into the inherent issues of colonialism and imperialism, we see India exclusively through Western eyes, and therefore, a limited scope of what India was like at this time.

Despite this fact, however, Moore still fashions a very entertaining and exciting romance between her protagonists. She'll have you biting your lip through every tense stare, groaning at every miscommunication, and holding your breath until the final declaration of love.

This is a sweet, clean Regency romance that I loved reading!

It's 1813, and Lady Helen has just moved to India with her Mama and stepfather, Jim. She loves the beauty of the land and all the curiosities. A couple of soldiers in Jim's regiment catch her eye, and maybe even her heart. Join Lady Helen as she experiences the good and bad of India and discovers what music makes her heart sing!

It was a cute story and I really loved the setting of India under the British rule.
Not your average Regency story but it didn't thrill me either. Its tone was a bit naïve, which I'm still trying to decide whether it was a good thing or not.

I know not everyone has the experience of growing up sheltered from the darker things in life, not that everything is perfect, but that things are good and everything looks beautiful. And then you grow up and learn about those darker things. This book really touched me in a very personal way. It felt like such a metaphor for life, not letting the dark side overwhelm you and finding that your song will have some sad mixed in with the happy.

I pretty much loved everything about this book. The setting is magical, and the characters are fabulous! Honestly, I don’t know what else to say. Anything else feels mundane. This was such a personal thing, and it puts me in a bit of a vulnerable position. I understand that others will not see this book in the same way I did. I hope I have been able to convey a small amount of what it meant to me.

I swear to you when I finished reading this book, I caught myself in a big sigh! It was wonderful! It was also an amazing adventure in India. And watching Lady Helen fall in love was priceless. Okay maybe I have been watching one too many commercials but it was wonderful and I did catch myself in a sigh! And if I didn’t have a huge pile of tbr books, I would reread it right now!!

Lady Helen is the daughter of Lady Patricia. When her father died Lady Patricia married General Stackhouse. He was much more a father to her than her own father had ever been. He loved her and protected her. Lady Helen went with them to India where Lady Helen saw everything with the glass half full. She loved the colors, the customs, the people and she desired to learn and see more.

Captain Rhodes has been in India for some time. He lost part of a leg in battle. He is around ten years Lady Helen’s senior. He is a good man. Captain Rhodes has a monkey that found him when he was in the hospital and has stayed with him and helped him heal.I think of him like a working dog. The monkey thinks he is human and is quite cute and funny. Captain Rhodes has always treated Lady Helen with respect and admires her views of India and life. They form an easy friendship.

Lieutenant Bancroft is young full of life and everything Helen ever wanted in a husband. He likes to hunt and is always talking about hunting and saying it in such a manner that offends Lady Helen. He is kind to her and does the general token of sending her flowers to show his affection for her.

These are times with unsteady politics between the British and India. Talk of war and showing respect brings Helen, General Stackhouse, Lieutenant Bancroft and many more in the troops for a show of respect in the Prince’s palace. But the lack of respect shown back to them is obvious and Lady Helen is frightened. The tigers are chained but are on the front porch of the temple. It is Captain Rhodes who comes to her aide and protects her time and time again.

Captain Rhodes sees that she cares for Lieutenant Bancroft and knows she would never see him as any more than a friend. Especially with his damaged leg. Helen always finds herself in his company and able to talk easily with him and she feels safe with him.

But the writing is what keeps me glued to my chair. It flows easily and the descriptions make me want to get on a plane and go to India myself. Although I do not want the bugs, bats, snakes, and scorpions described! Wait, never mind- I think I will just read about India! The characters are portrayed so that I can see them and understand them in my own mind. I admire the characters and find myself rooting for them all. Well, almost all of them! Lady Helen had a song on her piano forte for everyone but herself. She has been looking for her own song that describes who she is and that is part of her own journey.

Here is one of my favorite moments between mother and daughter….

“With Jim, I am safe.” Lady Patricia said. “Not simply from physical harm, but I trust him with my heart and know without a doubt he would never hurt it. I am safe to say anything or be anything with him, and he will not think less of me. That is what love is, my dear. And I did not know it until I met him.”

Good story and well developed characters. Though it wasn't in-depth, I thought the author did a very nice job of giving a feel for life in India through the eyes of a young British girl.

India has always sounded so exotic, especially from the perspective of an English lady during the 1800s. The beautiful, and sometimes horrifying, imagery that is described in this book is very vivid and caused me to picture it all so clearly. Add to that some great, yet flawed, characters, and a charming story is born!

Lady Helen is accompanying her mother and step-father to India and has a great attitude to change. She is willing to learn, adapt, and accept the customs and people around her. I find that to be a refreshing view from a refined lady. Lady Helen is very likable and the Captain and the Lieutenant couldn't agree with me more. Both men are delightful and each has imperfections to overcome, but those qualities are what really draw me to them and it makes me like them all the more.

The adventures, mishaps, and relationships in the story are very engaging and I couldn't read it fast enough. I love a good, clean romance, as well as strong family ties. There are a few twists that surprised me, but overall, it is a satisfying and gentle read. The pacing is spot on, as things keep moving, but not so fast that the reader can't get to know the characters. I can't wait for more!

Content: mild romance; mild violence and moments of peril. Clean!

This Regency romance is uniquely set in India. Helen has moved there with her mother and stepfather, Brigadier-General Jim Stackhouse, who has a military assignment there. She immediately meets two men--Captain Michael Rhodes, who has lived in India for a while and knows the people and customs very well and Lieutenant Arthur Bancroft, a handsome man who makes her swoon.

We get to see India through Helen's eyes and she's eager to take in the culture. I loved the descriptions and felt like I was experiencing India myself. There were parts that weren't appealing to me since I enjoy the comforts of living in America. Helen had a tough time with some things, too, and I liked how Michael helped her see things from a different perspective.

This is a gentle love story, that slowly grows throughout the book. Helen thought she knew what she wanted in a man but there were events that made her question that and focus on other characteristics. This is a book that I can easily recommend to anyone that enjoys a clean regency romance! I've enjoyed every book I've read of Jennifer Moore's and look forward to reading more in the future!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher for an honest review. My opinion is 100% my own.

I just love bestselling author Jennifer Moore’s novels and I was thrilled for another regency. Lady Helen Finds Her Song takes place in the mystical and beautiful world of India, with British influences. Lady Helen has gone on a voyage with her mother and step-father to his new station in India with the army. Here Helen experiences the drastic culture differences and what many would see as barbaric, Lady Helen sees as an exciting new adventure. Lady Helen makes the acquaintance of a Captain and a Lieutenant and as time goes by she must decide which man she will let her heart love. The story is an absolute and wonderful delight. Readers will be charmed by the characters and the story from page one. Learning about India and the relationships between the natives and the British in the novel is also quite interesting, as well. A lovely clean regency romance read, I would recommend this novel to readers that enjoy this time period.

Jennifer Moore has done it again, creating characters that I fell in love with immediately. I also thoroughly enjoy the fact that this book connects to several of her others. It's fun to run into familiar characters again. I found Helen to be a delightful character with her sweetness of spirit but low self esteem. I loved the way Captain Rhodes treats her and the way their friendship forms. The details about India and life there during this period of time were enjoyable as well. Certainly very different than the life Helen lived in England, yet she doesn't let the differences stop her from appreciating the beauty she sees around her. But it doesn't take long before she starts to realize that this land has plenty of flaws as well and she struggles to come to grips with some of the traditions she sees/hears about. In addition, her crush on the lieutenant versus her friendship with the captain must be faced as well. Once again, Moore has created a compelling, wonderful story of love and life.

I'm so happy to be a part of this tour. Jennifer Moore is a favorite of mine and I just gobble her books right up.

This book is a regency, but set in India so you get a completely different feel than most typical regency novels. I loved seeing India through Helen's eyes. She was so excited for a new adventure and took in every sound, smell and sight with new eyes willing to know and understand this rich new culture. It was not the typical English response which put Lady Helen a bit on the outs of her social circle.

Lady Helen is a character that is so easy to like. I loved her gentle and kind nature. She was adventurous and courageous. Lady Helen and Captain Michael were the perfect match. Their growing friendship and love was just perfect.

I loved how this book gently enveloped me. It was easy to settle in with and it left me feeling happy and content. So, so good.

I got lost in this book and loved it! Helen's widowed mother recently married General Stackhouse and Helen goes with them to his new assignment in India. I liked Helen right away. She's a little unsure of herself, excited to take in a completely new culture, and feels deeply. The write-up on the book makes it sound like a love triangle, but Helen doesn't string people along. I loved learning about India at this time period and seeing it through Helen's and Michael's viewpoints. I thought Helen's stepfather was so kind and really liked him. Michael and Helen are so sweet with one another and develop a deep emotional connection. Helen falls in love with him without putting the name "love" to what she's feeling. The setting is vibrant, the characters admirable, the pace just right with a few issues and events looming, and it hit the right emotional chords with me.

So now I want to go to India and eat exotic food and have a pet monkey. Thanks a lot Ms. Moore!
This story is about Lady Helen finding herself or her "song" and finding romance in India. She is kind and smart and funny and I immediately started rooting for her to find her way. She is traveling there with her mother and stepfather and finds everything in her travels wonderful and adventurous, unlike many of the British women who live in India.
Every character has depth, including Badmash, the monkey. The two men vying for Lady Helen's attention are distinct in their own personalities. Captain Rhodes and Lieutenant Ashcroft kept the tension going throughout the story.
I recommend this story to anyone who likes Regency Romance!

WHAT IT'S ABOUT
Spring 1813 --The exotic splendors of India are legendary, and the colorful sights of her new home in Calcutta immediately captivate eighteen-year-old Lady Helen Poulter. This handsome soldier represents the embodiment of all she’s dreamed of in a husband.

MY TAKE
I <3 Michael so much! He's so tender and sweet to her, and ever watchful for her safety and happiness. The way their friendship grew was adorable. I ached for what he had been through with his injury and the doubts he had of ever being found lovable because of it.

Helen is open-minded and kind. I loved getting to see Colonel (now General) Stackhouse again and experience the love and sense of family he had now. Once again Moore has given us flawed but likeable characters.

I’ve long been a fan of Ms. Moore. Her books are both swoon and sigh worthy while also being well researched and impeccably written.

This time she weaves her descriptions of India so seamlessly that you’d almost believe you were there walking in Helen’s shoes or Michael’s boot. The development of the individual characters coupled with the growing romance makes you want to savor every word, every page, to make the tale last as long as possible. There is beauty and ugliness found in India, as there are in all nations of the world. Helen’s reactions to them and the choices she makes in response are what set her apart from so many other heroines. By the end, you’ll hope you can see your own life through Helen’s eyes, but more especially with her generous heart.

This book will transport you back to India during 1813 when Lady Helen Poulter has come with her mother and General Stackhouse, her stepfather, as he claims his new military post. Lady Helen is fascinated with the country, its colorful animals and people, its strange customs and food, despite her friend Fanny's disgust with it all. It all seems like an adventure, a dream come true, as she goes to balls, meets an Indian prince, and finds love with a military man. Just as everything seems to be coming together as Helen always imagined, some political intrigue threatens everything and everyone she loves. Will she follow her heart to the man and country she's come to love? Or go back to the familiar shores of England?

I really enjoyed all the details and research that went into this book because it made the setting feel very real. I could imagine the gardens, the ball, the animals, the shops, and the people. I thought the description of the Indian palace was particularly well done and showcased the author's talent in letting her readers experience the exotic locales with her characters.

Lady Helen was a sympathetic character with so many good qualities and yet some insecurities that linger as well. It made her relatable and had me rooting for her to get her happily ever after. The character that surprised me the most, however, was General Stackhouse. His reactions to having a family were so sweet. The little family he'd gained softened him to such a degree that he became so dear in every scene he was in. I love it when characters just feel so real.

As for the romance, well, I definitely had a preference for the love triangle, and so as to not give any spoilers, I will just tell you that I closed the book with a smile because the ending was just that good.

If you love historical romance, you definitely have to read this one!

I LOVED this book! I loved the way the things that Lady Helen sees are well enough described that I felt as though I too was in India. I loved the setting, the plot, the monkey and the romance of the whole situation!

Lady Helen is accompanying her mother and her mother's new husband, Jim, on his latest military assignment to India. She's uncertain just what she will find when they arrive but is delighted with all of it. The country is beautiful and she is quite taken with the people and the customs that she is able to see as well. I loved the way she still loves these things, even when those around her (the annoying Fanny in particular) tell her that these people are heathens - that nothing they do could ever be beautiful.

I loved the way that Lady Helen came to care for those that she met there, there is a scene where she meets the woman who basically amounts to the queen and Helen is gracious and kind. I loved the way that she truly came to be a friend of this young woman and the easy way she came to care for many of the natives of India. Lady Helen is one of my favorite characters ever!

I loved Michael too! I love the way that he sees Lady Helen for the first time and falls head over heels for her, even though he thinks there's no way she could ever feel the same. I love the way he sacrifices himself later, thinking that he's doing something for the woman that he loves, even when that proves to be incorrect. And who wouldn't want to have a pet monkey?!

Jennifer Moore has written another amazing regency romance and you won't want to miss this great book!

This is a beautifully written book. Lady Helen has just come to India with her mother and step-father. The year is 1813. She is full of enthusiasm and excitement. She loves to learn from the people, find out about their culture, and take in the exotic animals and sights. Her optimism is not typical of a British Lady. She quickly finds that others do not share her love of the culture.

Jennifer Moore brought this story to life for me. I loved her descriptions of the country and the different religious sects in India. I could picture her descriptions as Helen first meets the monkey, Badmash. His elegant manners made me laugh. His owner wasn't too bad himself. :)

This book has a bit of a love triangle. Lady Helen is trying to figure out what is important to her. She is finding "her song", the melody that describes her life. She learns many important lessons about life and the things that are important to her. I thrilled in her journey.

I enjoyed the non-typical regency setting. The mannerisms and politics of the time are present in this book. I loved that it wasn't in the ballroom, London, or Bath. The setting is in India. Lady Helen is adjusting to her place in society while exploring another country.

This is a wonderful regency romance.
