Between Heaven and Hell

Rate this book
Jordan Havers's sixteenth birthday turns out to be anything but sweet when she's kidnapped by a demon who swears that she's the reason her party turned into a tragedy. When Heaven itself unleashes an ancient force to hunt her down, healthy skepticism takes a backseat to survival. Could an honor student from Twin Pines really be the nephilim, a human-angel hybrid cursed with power of apocalyptic proportions? Could a demon really be anything other than a monster? Soon Jordan is forced to choose between accepting Hell's protection and throwing herself at the mercy of Heaven's greatest weapon.

Without spoiling too much, "Between Heaven and Hell" turns the road trip trope on its head when a sardonic potential demon and a half-angel, half-human teenage girl end up on the run together. Samael, or "Sam" for short, is a deadly-chain-wielding antihero who ends up protecting Jordan from those who are hunting her down because of her heritage. One thing leads to another and Jordan soon finds herself falling for the handsome young -- or young-looking -- man. As a hopeless sap myself, the romance is what first attracted me to the story, especially since Jordan and Sam seem to have everything against them. It does not disappoint.

The author has a real knack for description and witty one-liners that make you feel like you're literally there, right between heaven and hell with the characters. It'll make you think twice about judging a book by its cover as there is much more to the angels VS demons fiasco than you might think. Sam is absolutely lovable in spite of his sometimes abrasive personality -- he has a thoughtful, kind side -- and the angels are downright terrifying at times. There are times when this action/romance comes off with some serious horror vibes. Absolutely fantastic and recommended to anyone who enjoys a good-and-evil romance with a twist. 5/5
