Ambriel #1

I Can Hear You

Rate this book
Amber has always known she was different. From an early age, she could hear the thoughts of those around her. Once she realized that she was different from everyone around her, she tried to conceal her gift. This led to a life of isolation, being unable to form close relationships with the foster families she has lived with.

Finally, she found a home with a single woman named Sarah and she learned to keep her secret to herself. The only person who knows about her ability is her best friend Becky. As she approaches her 18th birthday, she starts to see visions of demon creatures and great warriors caught in a great battle.

Confused by these visions, she is unaware that she will play an integral part in the outcome of the war. As she explores her situation more, she finds that she does have a family and place in another realm. She never dreamed she could find her one true mate, and a home where she belongs.

Teaser

I stood frozen in an unfamiliar alley surrounded by darkness as I watched swords clash together with the strength of ten men. Sparks flew and a thunderous noise had me covering my ears and hiding my face. I could feel my body shaking, worried for the dark-haired man as his muscles bulged with every swing. Evenly matched. As I tore my eyes from the swords, and the man that wielded it, I looked at his opponent and gasped with fear. Its eyes shot to mine and I saw his hate-filled red ones staring back at me. I couldn’t help but take a step backward. With his eyes on me, the dark-haired Greek god swung his sword true, taking the creature to its knees. When he delivered the final blow, his turquoise eyes turned on me, almost glowing. My heart stuttered before setting a rapid pace. The only thought that entered my mind; RUN!

Drenched in sweat, I sat straight up in bed. What the hell was that? Never had my dreams seemed so real. I felt as if I was actually there. I had a bad feeling.

Amber and Mikal. This book seems to be listed with multiple titles, 'Amber', 'Ambriel' and 'I Can Hear You'...
I re-read this one before starting the sequel, and I still say 3 fun stars.

Fun for what it was... Fluffy fantasy romance. The story is quick and hard to put down.
The world building could have been fleshed out better with more depth. You get the impression that there are only a handful of people in his dimension. The idea was good though and kinda reminiscent of Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series (but with sex, although not erotica).
Amber/Ambriel is an orphan who does her best to hide her ability to read minds, and appear normal. She lives with her last and best foster mother, Sarah in a small town. In fact, because of her psychic abilities she usually avoids larger cities and crowds, or she gets head aches. That is until her best friend talks her into going to the city to dress shop for prom. While at the Mall, she sees a big guy with glowing eyes hack down a demon with a sword. But only she can see them. These 'visions' become more common and her powers grow as she nears her 18th birthday.
Don't want to give too much away, but the plot is pretty simple. I did like Amber's character and even though she doesn't kick ass, she gives as good as she gets when it comes to Mikal and his prejudice against humans. Apparently Mikal's people, the Cusas, believe humans to be inferior and not to be fraternized with. Even going so far as to punish Cusas who do. Also, his people are trained to hide their emotions, but this was more the author saying it so, than that really being the case. I thought this angle of the story could have been more fleshed out.
I thought Amber a little too perfect, and found Mikal's change of heart a bit too quick to be convincing. Is he really over his prejudices?.

p.s.

I didn't really like it, but I respected the work that went into it...
Ok,question ? Why do the heroines in PNR or PNR type books like this have to have be soo young ? Now while I'll admit with the exception of her jerk of a mate Mikal Amber/Ambriel is a very smart and rather mature young woman for her age and except for how overly quickly ( almost doormat territory) she forgave and Mikal's horrible behavior and mated with him, I'd say she did great... but in paranormal and alien type stories etc. you can write the rules and have them age incredibly slow, have potions, or mating or unknown heritages make them live for ever, you can make anything seem right or possible if well written..... but for me this wasn't ... I started with Ms. Davenport's latest book 'Zorraks rescue" ,I absolutely loved it and since I read it two days ago I have been reading everything I could my hands on. This I see this one of her earlier works and I can really see the difference and I'm very grateful I started where I did...
I didn't like how Amber relationships and friendships and just worn off and left everybody without saying a word, then Mikal never really treated her with real kindness or respect even though he knew she was something very very rare , a 'true mate' ,he neglected and ignored her and jumped to conclusions first and asked questions later ,acted like she was beneath him, (deep sigh) she actually was...
When they 'mated' , it's just sex, nothing romantic , or special and no discussion what soo ever, for me no chemistry , he didn't to anything even really where her even though before he did it he knew she was a virgin because he had just asked her...
Then it was, bam! Now we're mated and you mean something to me... buuuuut jets keep it all secret and let ppl who despise you just because your part human hate you...
To Mikal was a coward and a jerk , he honestly wasn't good enough for her and other then his looks and the mate pull there honestly wasn't a reason for them to be together .... one minute he's disgusted (almost by her) and definitely ashamed and the next he's mated her... nope, didn't like that one bit.. Made Amber look really weak to me...
What is dint get is ,why a race of ppl risk their lives to protect a ppl they disrespect to the point of a racist hatred ?
Why protect a ppl who loathe and hate ?
I've really really enjoyed Ms. Davenport's writing and I look forward to reading more but I'm grateful this was KU and I won't be finishing and reading the 2nd book...

I enjoyed this world, though at times, like when the H and h mated, it seemed too rushed and out of place. I am not sure what she saw in the H, they didn't really ever talk and he was mostly rude in words and deeds when they rarely did. Other than that... I really liked it and will read the next one as well.
I guess I am also bothered by the fact that the second book was set up with the evil dude saying he was going after her foster mother to get even and it has been 2 years and no follow through yet:(

It could have been a stand alone with a good ending if that had not been added. Adding it.... I need more!!

A REALLY GOOD SHORT. SCI-FI ROMANCE.

If you enjoy romance, fantasy, light science fiction, you will most likely enjoy this book. This is a true romance where your own mind takes over the love scenes to become your ideal. So many romance writers in every genre have taken to detailing hard core sex, it is wonderful to read a romance writer that doesn't. Author, Hannah Davenport is slowly becoming one of my top ten favorites.

The things that make this a four instead of five star is

1: The story is too short. You start to get to know the characters and your emotions start to come into play and oops, sorry, it is over. That is so maddening. It's like reading Harlequin, short, not a lot of story but, oh, happy ending anyway. I would love to see Ms. Davenport work on writing novels that keep you reading long into the night and being angry you have to work instead of curling up to your book. Davenport definitely has the ideas, writes a great book so I hope to see a series of novels come out someday.

2: Editing, editing, more editing. The read is interrupted by each wrong word, misspelled word or extra word. David readers hate errors and most authors learn how important the editing of a book is to their readers.

That's it. I am happy to recommend this book to any reader that enjoys a good story. Romance at its best.

I received this book for an honest review. Thank you!!

I enjoyed this book. It moved very quickly and the main characters interacted for less than half the book. I hope the second book continues the adventures of Ambriel and Mikal, the current commander, so there can be more of their character development. I felt Ambriel gave in took quickly for her desire for Mikal. Mikal had also been with other women in the book before Ambriel. I did enjoy the case Ambriel put Mikal on in trying to find her. She gave him a run for it. I hope Ambriel returns to earth so she can use her abilities to help the humans, since she was helping out Brian, a police detective, when her friend was kidnapped and eventually found dead. Ambriel blamed herself for her friend's death and with everything happening, she could not grieve. Ambriel's powers make her extremely strong especially her ability to read thoughts and see the future. It has helped her in several situations. In the next book, I hope to see Ambriel's power grow and what her abilities are as well as her relationship with Mikal. Since the Cusas people killed Ambriel's mother, not many are happy that they are together and true mates. I hope to encounter more underlying plots as well as what Ornias has planned in order to conquer all the realms. If you like a quick read, this is a good book for you!!

It sorta reads like fan fiction....I dont really know how to explain it any better than that.

Also a bit repetitive....the h kept having to explain her powers, and each time she explained fully. I mean after the first time, it could've been glossed over for us....I did t need to read half a dozen times how she could hear voices, and felt like she didn't belong anywhere, and what happppened with her mom.

And there's one bit at the end that made no sense, and I'll try to be vague here, so not to spoil it where one of the H's exes wants to get rid of the heroine, but in doing so, knowingly puts her entire world at risk...and I just couldn't figure out why she would do something so so stupid, when she was supposedly a valued member of their society....and then it all gets solved within a couple pages....and the book ends...can you say rushed?

Yeah, so 2 stars. Not bad, but not my cuppa. Read an except if you can, before deciding to give it a go.

This is the first book by this Author I have read but I now have her book Jakke (The Azziarin Series Book 1) in my wish list to read . Amber can hear the thoughts of others. When her best friend, Becky and her take a trip to the city she sees demon creatures and great warriors fighting with swords. Not only can she see them, they see her! Why can she see them and no one else can? Mikal,is the leader of the Cusaleon realm he fears they are losing the war with the Santiarns but when he see Amber he does not understand why she is able to see them . Who is Amber and what does she mean to their fight against the Santiarns? Who where Ambers parents what did the Cusaleon do to them? I was gifted a copy for an honest review barwatts@telus.net

Good

The end was too rushed. Mikal just what? Suddenly gave in? Centuries of hating humans just gone? I can believe the true mate bond changed his mind but I don't understand the human hatred. To the point that they would kill someone. Why do they bother protecting humans?

Fun read

This was the first book I have read by Hannah Davenport, and I really liked it, a lot. I loved Amber's character. I did feel like the last 25% was rushed. I can't wait till she comes out with the next one.

Unique story line and characters!

Only drawback were the wording errors that disturbed the flow.
Cannot wait for sequel. So nice to dwell in a book that takes me away for awhile.
