Solid story featuring the tenth doctor and the return of the Osirans. They originally fought the third doctor back in the days of duct taped props.

SO geht das, BBC! *-*

Ebooks like this one should have sound effects so I can hear the DW theme properly instead of wheezing it while reading and stretching in the morning. I got it anyway and played it.

All of the Doctor Who comics I've read thus far have had shorter two or three issue arcs, and after reading these five issues, I can see why. This story takes four issues to get going, and by the time the villain of the piece is revealed, I'd lost all interest entirely.

I feel like if a comic is going to refer to Doctor Who stories before New Who, we should get a little recap, even one panel to tell us a) what story you're referring to or b) the cliffs notes version of what happened. The ultimate reveal of this story is a throwback to the Fourth Doctor's Pyramids Of Mars (as I found out after Googling it once I finished the story), but it was all vague allusions and hand waving until the final reveals actually solidified it, and even then, as someone who hasn't seen that particular serial, it meant very little to me.

Nick Abadzis returns to scripting, and again plies the reader with mountains of monologue that literally mean nothing. The villain talks for pages without saying anything, and I don't think anyone actually explains anything throughout the book - there are three or four characters that play a role in the proceedings that aren't properly fleshed out at all despite being there the entire time, meanwhile the Doctor, Gabby, and Cindy spend all their time either running after one another or being kidnapped. Also, I feel like there are two queer relationships that are heavily hinted at without anyone actually confirming them, which feels entirely pointless since Doctor Who comics haven't shied away from that so far. It's not taboo anymore, guys, we can have someone say 'he's my boyfriend' and the readers won't throw your comic away.

The artwork's also a hodgepodge, with both Eleanora Carlini and Elena Casagrande returning, aided and abetted by Rachael Stott and Leonardo Romero, but since the Titan trades don't break down who draws which issue, they all blend into one, which is a shame.

So many problems, so little time. There are glimpses of gold in here somewhere, but it's buried under vague handwaves and so many words that you'll switch off before you get to the bottom of them. Disappointing on all fronts.

I was only vaguely aware of Doctor Who before the 21st century reboot. A few friends recommended the show to me, and one of them finally loaned me the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) series. I was quickly charmed by the Doctor, Rose Tyler and Captain Jack Harkness (at first I found Mickey Smith and Jackie Tyler irritating, but they both grew on me as time went on) and pulled in by what I’ll call the emotional quality of the writing and acting. I chugged onward, and David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor became my favourite. Martha Jones is my favourite companion. But I’m not a dyed-in-the-wool Whovian. For various reasons I won’t detail here, I haven’t watched all of the Matt Smith or Peter Capaldi adventures. I did thoroughly enjoy The Day of the Doctor, however.
I’d managed to resist the Doctor Who graphic novels for quite a while, but I guess my resistance was lower and my willingness to make an impulse purchase higher the day I ran across this.
In an interesting coincidence, I bought this not long before I found The Husbands of River Song at the library and had to check it out. (River is lots of fun.) Although I enjoyed THRS and think it’s one of the better Doctor Who Christmas specials, it reminded me of a quibble I have with the amount of diversity on the show. I may have missed something by not watching every episode, but it seems to me there’s been a sad lack of Asian (including East Indian) and Hispanic characters on the show. This book has an American Hispanic companion, Gabriella Gonzalez, and her Asian-American best friend, Cindy. I got the impression that Hanif, a member of the group that causes the Doctor & co. trouble, was Egyptian. So—yay, more diversity!
As for the story itself, it was okay. Gabriella is a nice girl, in a bit over her head as the companions tend to be early on, but she does her best. Lots of girl power—there are other female characters essential to the plot—although Gabby’s and Cindy’s friendship is full of conflict. Cindy often came off as abrasive or insecure. Some of that’s understandable when your best friend keeps disappearing, but I would’ve preferred a more positive dynamic. There’s a fairly typical gods-are-really-aliens storyline, though there was some mystery to unravel regarding what’s happening to a human affected by an alien artifact. I got a little lost in some of the jargon, but that might be my own problem and nothing to do with the writing.
While I was glad to see that five of the six artists in the collection are female—something that still seems quite rare in comics/graphic novels—I found the art somewhat inconsistent and would have preferred more and better detail.

Pros:
-The drawings, by Elena Casagrande and, to a lesser extent, Arianna Florean, continue to be beautiful and very refreshing - No noticeable (over)sexualized poses or exaggerated anatomy (I prefer Casagrande's way of depicting the characters as opposed to Florean's, though), as it is often seen in comic books (usually by male artists), even the DW ones. This is the kind of comic drawings female comic fans deserve.

-Stories continue to be reasonably interesting and engaging, with quite a lot of technobabble.

-Good Tenth Doctor characterization. The drawings also look like David Tennant.

-The comic!companion, Gabriella González aka Gabby is an interesting, active and very likeable character with an adventurous, inquisitive spirit, artistic inclinations and goals for her careeer and future in general. Her friend (and more unwilling companion xD), Cindy Wu, is another interesting and assertive character with an interest for science.

-Female representation: Quite a lot of different female characters with active roles who are never romantic interests (no romance at all in this story!), or eye candy (not even actress Dorothy Bell, who, even though she's depicted in a tube skirt and heels - and I'm not a fan of heels-, is not sexualized in her poses): Gabriella González (active companion), Cindy Wu (active unwilling companion), Cloe (kind of a bounty hunter/agent for the religious cult in this story), Dorothy Bell (actress turned creator 'goddess' when merged with an alien entity), Vivian (Dorothy's bodyguard). Apart from the Doctor and Anubis, male characters have secondary roles in this story.

-Racial representation: Gabby is Mexican-American, Cindy is Chinese-American, Cloe is black.

-Female bonding and women interacting with other women: Gabby with Cindy, Gabby with Dorothy, Dorothy with Vivian, and, to a lesser extent, Cindy with Cloe and Dorothy with Cloe.

-Criticism of religious fanaticism.
-Messages of empathy and moral integrity.

Cons:
-The tube skirt and heels. Even though the poses were not sexualized.
-A moment of body shaming, where Cloe calls Cindy 'shrimp' and Cindy retaliates with 'plus-size' or 'XL'.

Some of these new Doctor Who comics from Titan have been pretty disappointing, this one was not. The story arc held up a lot of the flavor and texture of the David Tennant years and humorous, thrilling scary and emotional impactful as well. In part, the success of these new comics is in developing new companions for the Doctor. Gabriella "Gabby" Gonzalez is very much in the tradition of Rose, Martha & Donna and provides a unique voice that separates these adventures from the episodes, while maintaining a continuity by utilizing the same character tools that the Tennant Doctor's companions used. As the stories progress, Gabby's role becomes increasingly important as was the case with Rose, Martha & Donna. The focus shifts from the perspective of the Doctor's adventures to the companion's adventures and thus the narrative's protagonist is the companion, and not the star. in this way, it is curtail that the companion be at least as interesting as the Doctor, and in that regard Gabby shows lots of potential. Looking forward to many more Gabby adventures with the 10th Doctor.

Another adventure with the Tenth Doctor and Gabby. This time, the whole volume is taken up with one story, with just a little intro diversion, similar to a real episode!

Gabby accidentally drags her sassy friend Cindy into this tale of alien artefacts and ancient beings. I didn't love it quite as much as the earlier adventures with Gabby, but it's still a great addition to the collection and gives that little hit of Tenth Doctor awesomeness that I've been craving :)

FCBD 2015 - Laundro-Room of Doom 3.5/5
Laundro-Room of Doom is a short and fun little adventure. The plot is basic but serves the purpose well, which is to show more of the TARDIS in a fun way. It was great to see little bits that have been missed over the years. I enjoyed the art a lot.

1.11-1.12 The Fountains of Forever 3.5/5
The Fountains of Forever appear is the first part of a multipart story, and it feels like it. The plot is an interesting setup to the rest of the story. The new characters are good, but sometimes are over-dramatic and talk in ways that explain for the audience. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but something that stands out a little. The art work was solid, with no noticeable 'off model' panels.

1.13-1.14 Spiral Staircase 3.5/5
Spiral Staircase is the second part of a multipart story. The plot continues on from The Fountains of Forever, with the plot continuing to ramp up. I'm enjoying what this story arc is doing, and the overall idea is interesting. The new characters are good, with less over-dramatic moments than it the first part. The art is good, but the Doctor does look like a generic character.

1.15 Sins of the Father 3.5/5
Sins of the Father is the conclusion to the story arc that has run through The Fountains of Forever and Spiral Staircase. As a conclusion to the story it works well, as well as a single issue. It ties up the plot nicely, while adding the option for it to be picked up later. The art work was great in this issue, with little 'comic' moments not normally seen in this series.

I'd read the first issue of this two years ago, and, even though I'm not a huge Ninth Doctor fan, the ending had me excited because it ended with the Tenth Doctor being de-aged into the Ninth Doctor. However, it turns out that he's only like that very briefly. As such, that ending feels like a cheap trick to get readers to buy the next issue. This is an example of a gimmick gone wrong, something that the comics really need to avoid. To me, this makes this volume feel like the weakest of the first three from this Tenth Doctor series. The score might be more of a 3.5/5.

Once I got past that, though, I really enjoyed how the storyline incorporated Anubis. I love the character designs and the background art all throughout this book. And it was nice having Gabby's friend Cindy get involved in the plot. At the end of the story, I felt sorry that she couldn't get to the TARDIS in time to join The Doctor and Gabby on further adventures. I suppose that it would've resulted in there being too many companions in the Four Doctors crossover event. So I hope that Cindy comes back into play after that.

Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor: Vol.3 The Fountains of Forever (#11-15) (by Nick Abadzi)

Collection (#11-15) review:

Cool new characters with å returning villain.

Dorothy (multiple): “Doctor … You are an adept, present in the here and now, and yet not. You move through this reality like smoke, a beautiful, dangerous idea. You are a very complicated space/time event.”
Doctor: “I bet you say that to all the boys!”

“The primates indigenous to this blue world are an inventive species – I remember them – but it seems they are still unenlightened, lacking nuance in their thinking.
They choke the planet with rudimentary industrial processes.”

New author Abadzis takes a different tack, presenting a story that's heavily influenced by past Doctor Who canon. The result is a rather delightful expansion of a very classic foe, looked at through a new lens.

What this comic doesn't have, unfortunately, is much in the way of human connection. Though it's absolutely full of characters, none of them really pop for me until the last issue. There's also not enough tension.

So, I can see the potential of this new author, and love his look into the show's past, but it doesn't gel (yet?).

I have to say that this is a great comic, since after figuring out what happened in the 15th Doctor's first season with Ruby Sunday as well. I am starting to enjoy these comics a lot more, as they also complement the show well and better than I could ever expected. From reading these comics, I am finding more and more stories and great lessons if I reflect on them correctly. Part of the reason why I can seek out these lessons of life better is with a new system of always trying to find 10 actionable takeaways from each book that I read.

This particular comic entry is all set up for the next collection. And that's fine, but it does mean that most of this entry really drags on. Also, we get Gabby's best friend Cindy along for the ride, and I just found her really annoying. She only was brought in because the Doctor and Gabby are separated for the bulk of the adventure and the Doctor needs someone to bounce thoughts off of, but she just doesn't have a distinctive enough personality for me to latch on to her. We might as well have had Gabby stick with the Doctor the whole time because Cindy didn't bring anything different to the table.

On the plus side, the Doctor looks more like himself in this one (I hated his look in volume 2).

We get the return of Sutekh! Well, kind of. It's Anubis this time, but the Doctor thinks it's Sutekh at first. In any case, the Osirans are back, and that's always a fun time.

And, what took this from two stars to three stars for me: we get a Rose mention. It's only one dialogue panel, but it pulled on my heart strings HARD. And bear in mind, this is post-Journey's End, not Doomsday, so the Doctor knows that Rose is fine and happy and living her best life with his half human self. So the fact that after being knocked out and waking up, she's still the first thing on his mind after who knows how many years is just....a;sk;fjf. My OTP forever and ever, and little things like this are why.

Really, I'm totally easy. You have the Doctor think about Rose Tyler in any sort of DW media and I'm going to be totally into it.

Didn't enjoy this one as much as the previous volume (which must have been from ages ago but alas), it felt messy and confusing and the dialogue didn't flow particularly well. I was left at the end just feeling a bit muddled - not really the best response, especially if this story ever comes back into play.

As is my usual MO for these weekend readathons, I read several of these comic collections back to back. Some worked better (sometimes much better) than others and I discovered yet another accidental duplicate in my collection. Oops. I continue to enjoy this collections and will likely add more to my home library in the future.
