As he has in every novel in the "Ember War Saga ", Richard Fox has thrown a few curveballs with this book. The story of human resistance to the Xaros who had tried to exterminate humanity and kill anything intelligent on the Earth (inexplicably, the Xaros seemingly killed the Congress of the old USA, so they killed un-intelligent life as well). Our protagonists, who we have followed in every book so far, discover ANOTHER race of possible alien allies. Poor genetically mutated Stacey, granddaughter of the initial contactee of the "allied aliens" seems to be going through some strange changes. One of the characters who seemed to have died in an earlier adventure, may (or may not) now be alive. The Earth sends it's best battleship on another suicide mission against the Toth. More races are encountered. The action continues nonstop, although the Earth leadership is going through a crisis in short scenes between the battles. The leaders wonder whether the changes they are making to survive constitute changing the definition of humanity.
However, as in the previous novels, Fox is deliberately just barely keeping the issues alive. His characters ARE now starting to change under the constant pressure of war. The protagonists include members of several races at this point, along with the original Artificial Intelligence that initiated contact with humanity almost a century before.
Fox evidently could not resist throwing references to Mesopotamian Gods' mythology as revealed by Zacariah Sitchin, much to my amusement. He keeps this touch light, just barely mentioning it -- except for placing it in the title, of course.
I enjoyed the military space opera basis for this series, but the extra twists that Fox threw in kept my attention. Fox is a good writer, the book is well edited, and I really enjoy his story-telling ability. Highly Recommended
I don't really know what to say, I just know I didn't like it.
There were a few cool moments that expanded the overarching storyline, and that's about all I liked.
The combat felt shallow. The stakes didn't feel like they actually held any weight. The proccies are now being used as throw-away characters, so no one important dies.
What should have been a cool, high-risk mission felt like a cake walk with absolutely no consequences and feels extremely rushed.
Part of me wants to put this series down and move onto something else, and another wants to see it through just to see the conclusion of the overarching story.
When I first started reading this series I had my doubts because it sounded like a lot of the other ones out there. Then I got about 2 or 3 chapters into the first book in the series and have been into it ever since. This book was like the rest of the series and they are all well written and the characters are well developed with some new ones added to every book. In this book the humans are starting to find more and more help so to speak and the story is getting better with every book . Mr Fox has a way of keeping you up reading all hours of the night just to see what happens next. I'm sorry but I don't give up to much information about the book because I have a bad habit of giving you too much. The book is well worth the time to read it and if you are just starting out with this series go to the first book. It is full of nonstop action with both space and land battles. He throws so many twists in this series that you don't even see them coming. I bought this book awhile ago and I try to put it off until the next one is about to come out so I'm not waiting to long but it never works and I break down and read it. So here I am waiting for the next one. Loved it and great job Mr Fox.
Book 5 of "The Ember War Saga," continues what was an entertaining SciFi storyline of humanity's limited remaining population, fighting to survive advanced alien races onslaught and the self serving interests of other "allied" alien races.
The writing, as with too many eBook authors, has devolved in a serious manner. There is far too much repetition within this book's narrative, indicating laziness by the author. The editing is poor, indicating incompetence and/or sloth.
There was merit in the basic storyline of the "Saga," but without serious improvement in the next book, this reader will say goodbye.
Author has held my Attention -- for 5 books now -- with, overall, familiar theme, characters. He does put in some nice twists to juice your mind a bit which is a big plus. AND, in a genre that is starving, a real, honest to goodness Mil SciFi. Yes, units, TOs, weapons, equipment and overall feel that this is indeed a Military Type, One Each.
Not going to nitpick as there's a bit to go around and tired of it. Held my interest, believable(semi) military, MCs you can hold onto, entertaining and some plot twists that can get you thinking.
This is tale of revenge and assassination, plain and simple. Well maybe not simple, because no assassination mission ever is. One squad of elite marines to take down the Toth overlord Mentiq on his own planet? There are plenty of surprises in store for the team on Nibiru, but can they really complete the mission against all odds? Read and find out.
The fifth book in this series continues the battles hale and his team face. The task of killing the head of the enemy, is not as simple thing. They find that he has been keeping humans as food for him and the other overlords. But there is also a surprise in that they find more allies held captive. Looking forward to reading the next book.
This series is action filled goodness for me. Pure popcorn. Not a bad thing indeed. Reminds me why I read other books because I usually read these in one or two sittings. Even though it says I took about 2 months to read this...its because I kept it on the back burner. I just knew I'd go through it like a kid on x-mas day otherwise.
Even after 5 books, it's still a very pleasant read. The series won't win any literary award but it's still better than most scifi written this last few years and a lot less depressing than those young adult dystopias (yes, even if in this universe humanity is on the brink of extinction). I just hope the main story-line won't be milked to oblivion...
More battle, amazing discoveries, and a deal with the devil himself (or close enough). throw in a little twist at the end and you've definitely primed the pump for the next book in the series, which I will be starting right after submitting this review.
Ive really enjoyed this series. Its hard to say anything is new, this series has taken a lot of ideas and turned them into a sci-fi series of very different style.
My favorite of the Ember War series. Lots of Alien action as our heroes battle the Toth on a jungle planet to pull off an epic rescue mission that has some great surprises.
The Ember War Saga continues to be a beautifully written, action packed series. It is as good as any of the other series I have read. I can not wait to get the next installment.
The Breitenfeld is taking the fight to the Toth home planet of Niburu and are going all out to kill their Leader/Financial backer Mentiq.
Lieutenant Hale has two new additions to his squad. Marine Staff Sergeant Egan who is a Communications expert and is a replacement for Torni and Corporal Rohen, a sniper, well they've already got Bailey, so there might be another reason for Rohen being on mission!
On Toth, they find unexpected Allies and Steuben and Lafayette find something even more unexpected - a future for their race. Though, Lafayette is going to go through a rough ride on this one, which really peeves me off!
Expect, fights, death, Standish being Standish and a whole heap of revenge. Oh yeah and also some really weird parts with Torni!
I still love Lt. Hale, Cortaro, Bailey, Orozco, Yarrow, Steuben, Lafayette and Standish. Oh yeah and I mustn't forget - Elias, Bodel and Kallen - the ultimate warriors - The Iron Hearts (sorry for not mentioning them earlier).
I found this book to be more interesting and entertaining than some of the previous books in the series. The author’s well developed characters play out well in an absorbing story. The series strength is in it’s overall plot. Each book adds to and enhances this main plot line. You get the feeling that there’s movement towards a greater moment...an event that will bring everything together.
the Toth are never going to leave Earth alone. so Ibarra sends the Breitenfeld to search out the Toth homework and wipe out the Toth overlord. such a clear-cut plan. so very many ways it can go wrong.
loved this one. some excellent twists that made it super fun
Audiobook five and it’s still awesome. Richard Fox is totally amazing and no boring Stuff to extend the series and make more money ( like many others do ), here it’s almost impossible to put it down, in fact it’s just getting better and better. As usual, narration is spot on! Perfection!!!
I don't dislike this series. Obviously I've committed myself to it this far. I'm just not feeling the oomph anymore. Not sure if I'll stick with it or not. I do care about the characters, it's just... missing something, can't quite put my finger on it.
Much better and more thrilling. Appreciate the efforts of the author to weave in suspense and also maintain cohesiveness. Tough job well done. Iron hearts always.
This is my second time reading this series. I wanted to binge read it without having to wait for the next book to be released. It has interesting characters and a good storyline with lots of action
As all the books so far one leads smoothly into the next smoothly and the story continues. It has been an action packed story so far and keeps going having an long story line but very far from boring. Ready for the next book now.
The Gardens of Nibiru.... Richard Fox brings Hale and Valdar back for more action. Standish is his normal self. Yarrow makes a friend. This saga has kept me on my toes.
