Wade Burleson shows how much of what passes for organized Christianity today is simply a minor modification of the Old Covenant agreement God had with Israel, an agreement the writers of Hebrews called "obsolete and outdated." The reason many followers of Jesus lack the freedom and joy the New Testament promises is because Christians have little understanding that the death, burial and resurrection of Christ ended the Old Covenant, and established a RADICALLY NEW agreement between God and sinners. Wade Burleson shows how there can come incredible freedom and joy from resting in Christ's performance and obedience and not our own religious efforts or works.
I have read Wade Burleson's blog for many years. I agree with him on most things. I thought the content of this was fine. However, the tone of derision and condescension to other believers was incredibly annoying to me. Coupled with a deep need for editing and proofreading, I found this book difficult to read. This isn't the first book nor the first author to put forward these ideas, but from reading this you would think every pastor in the SBC is a backward country bumpkin. That simply isn't true. These aren't new ideas, and Rev. Burleson isn't a maverick reformer. He is a great pastor and a good blogger. And I've enjoyed his blog, from which the chapters were taken. But all together, these writings were a bit too self-congratulatory for me.
The writer gives an excellent view about what the new covenant has done and what it means for the Christian. This includes such areas as accepting that as the new covenant has come to pass in the death of Christ, we are no longer bound by the law or any law, but to live and rest in Christ. Christian’s are all to minister, not just males, Christ is the Israel of God and he shows the scriptures that reveal this. Other areas also are shown the reality of living in the new covenant and not in any mixture with the law attached, but completely free in Christ.
You are the apple of the Lords eye. He is not giving up on you so easy.
He has freely given you something that you may not have fully grasped because you have been exposed to a subtle Old Testament way of seeing things.
When you see these things with the mind of Christ inspired by the Holy Spirit, you will know the peace and joy of God. You will know how to accept and abide in Grace.
This book will let you see.
Keep your bible handy you will want to check the verse references.
