Fire Bears #4

Baby It's Cold Out Bear

Rate this book
****Baby It's Cold Out Bear was part of the USA Today Bestselling anthology, A Very Alpha Christmas. It can absolutely be read as a standalone short story.****

Emry Mason doesn’t expect to be pulled out of an icy ditch by a registered bear shifter, and she certainly doesn’t expect her rescuer to be as alluring as Graylan Young. He’s rented a room at the house she lives in, and with every growly encounter, he’s laying claim to her heart. But Graylan isn’t much for the festive season, and to win Emry over, she has one rule. Must love the holidays.

Graylan is only in town for a little while before his inner animal will demand he move on. But when he meets Emry, his life is turned upside down. Not only is she beguiling and different from every woman he’s ever met, but she has him wishing he could ignore his nomadic instincts. He might not be into the holidays, but suddenly all he wants for Christmas is to settle down with the woman he’s falling for.

Content Warning: Explicit love scenes, naughty language, and piles of sexy shifter secrets. Intended for mature audiences.

Graylan the wandering bear and Emry.
Graylan's bear is restless and doesn't know how to settle down, so he moves from town to town and tries not to make connections, cause what's the point?
When he first meets Emry, he is so resigned to his life he refuses to tell her his name, so she says "That's fine... Norman" (paraphrasing)
Emry is lonely after her boyfriend, the mayor, dumps her for a high-maintenance homewrecker. It's a short story, and so not too much happens but it was sweet and easy.
Interesting twist on the genre in that it's the bear that took more time to decide than his human half.

Normally there's more sazz and snazz in Joyces books, and lots of humour, spiked up with a bit of crazy 🤪

This was on the tame side...

So supes are out and must register with the government. Both Graylan and Emry fall hard and fast. I expect that in novellas, but in this one, I just didn't believe it. I think Helene was the best part. I loved how she blossomed at the end with Emry and Graylan looking out for her. This would have been better had it been longer.

2.5 Stars. I liked the characters and the storyline, and I know this was a novella, but it would have been better if it had been longer. Too much development was left out. Very cool characters, and loved Helene, but it could have used a bit more. It was insta, with a side of insta, and insta for dessert.

This is a short story and sadly one I didn’t like.

I hated the lead female. I couldn’t find a single redeeming quality in her. Emry was selfish and needy, and everything was only about her. She never considered Graylan’s feelings, only her own. Every time something didn’t go Emry’s way, she pouted and ran off. She was completely unfair to Graylan about him leaving, especially since he told her from the beginning his bear required it. It was all I could do to finish the story.

This one was short, but very sweet. I liked how Emry managed to win over Graylan with her bubbly holiday personality and how she wasn't scared that the was a bear shifter.

Sweet novella, with H who immediately attracted the the human h. She is drawn to him too but he denies her because of his lifestyle. Not much angst, instead a sweet love story with 2 nice people, one of whom is a shifter. Loved it as with all this authors books, this books offers a perfect escape.

Cute shifter holiday romance. Very cheesey and fast paced since it's so short. Not invested since this is my first book from this world. Also, had the "you're not like other girls" thing

Reviewed at Shifter Haven

Baby It’s Cold Out Bear appeared in the Christmas Bundle “A Very Alpha Christmas” in the Christmas season of 2015 – If you have that bundle of Christmas Shifter stories, then you already have this one, too.

And although this story takes place in the small town where T. S. Joyce’s series Fire Bears, made their impact on the world, the Breck Crew does not appear, they are mentioned often but we never get to see them again – which I admit, I was hoping for a little conversation but this is very short Christmas novella so I wasn’t completely surprised.

Baby It’s Cold Out Bear is a lighthearted Christmas tale of two people who probably wouldn’t work together, but love gets past obstacles that we humans (and Shifters) put up as blocks. In this Shifter world it’s only been about a year since Shifters made their presence known to the human world. While not as volatile as when they first announced themselves, the groundwork between Shifters and humans is still at times… shaky. Often with preconceived ideas about each side’s actions.

Graylan is a loner. He is constantly traveling the country, staying in one place only a short time until his bear has him on the move once again. He’s been hurt by a human, the woman he thought would hold him and his bear in one place forever, yet when she is horrified to discover just what her boyfriend truly is, Graylan sees her for what she truly is… a vindictive snob. So romantic entanglements is not on Graylan’s to-do list, ever again. When he is asked by his new landlady to go to the rescue of the other tenant in her home, Graylan never thought that he’d be face to face with his mate – or what to do about that.

Emry has been hurt in love recently and has stifled any romantic notions. Right now she’s enjoying the Christmas season and looking forward to decorating her landlady’s beautiful home for Christmas. That is if she can get home through this blizzard, and out of the ditch that a spot of black ice has tossed her into. When Graylan shows up to rescue her, Emry didn’t expect the heat between them or to discover that her knight in shiny fur hated the holidays.

What began as a rescue could turn into a romance for a lifetime – if these two can get past their fences and let each other in to their lives.

I enjoyed Baby It’s Cold Out Bear so much. It’s perfect for those times during the holiday when you don’t have a lot of time to spare for reading, but still gives you a charming, Christmas romance in a short amount of time. You love the holidays and Shifters? Then this one needs to go onto your Christmas reading list. Enjoy.

This was a cute story, but I was disappointed at not seeing the Kellers. Also, the story felt rushed. But it's still a sweet read.

The couple: Graylan and Emry

Romance trope: shifter
Series: Fire Bears
Length: 59 pages

Plot: Graylan is a new tenant in the boardinghouse where Emry lives, and he comes to rescue her when her car slides off the road into a ditch. He's a shifter, a bear, and as grumpy as they come. He's a wanderer, too, and knows better than to get attached. Despite knowing better, he and Emry start spending more time together. But what will he do when he decides it's time to move on?

Commentary: I liked this one a lot! For whatever reason, it hit just the spot and made me cry! I absolutely felt Emry's pain at being left behind once again, at that rejection that she had felt so many times before. I think that Graylan felt much the same way after being rejected by his last girlfriend (for something he couldn't control, that very shifter nature that Emry accepted without question) and not having a crew of his own. They really did complete each other, as corny as that sounds. It was a sweet read that was perfect for the holidays.

Previous book in the series: Bear the Heat
Next book in the series: A Very Alpha Christmas (where the story was originally published)

This is the fourth book in the Fire Bears series but it can be read as a standalone book. It was part of anthology and has now been released by its self. Graylan is a lone bear. He never stays in one place for very long. Emry finds herself needing to be pulled out of a ditch. She never imagined she would be rescued by a guy as good looking as Graylan or that he would be renting a room in the same house she does. Emry was left by her boyfriend the mayor. Now he has a baby with the woman he left her for. She is forced to see him all around time. Graylan finds himself wanting fight his nomadic ways and stay for Emry. She brings out a possessive side in him. I loved this book. I didn’t even realize there was a fourth book in this series. While Graylan isn’t linked to the other guys in the Fire Bears series this book does take place in the same town. The characters in this book are great. This book takes place around Christmas and holiday a great holiday feel. This a great short read.

This short story was perfect! It has all the elements I love in a good paranormal romance.

I loved the character of Emry. She's a kind, caring and wonderful individual. She has a great sense of humor and enjoys helping others. After a scary incident with her car, she comes face to face with a man who is a little grumpy and at first glance, not all that nice. However, the more time that Emry spends with Graylan, she sees the reason for the distrust.

Graylan is a shifter who has come out and is now registered. This has caused him some problems in the past and he's not looking to redo them. He is only here for a short time and then he will move on. The one thing he wasn't counting on was meeting Emry.

I have to say my favorite scene was when they were looking for the Christmas tree. That was hot!

Well, the hunk on the cover is great! The story is a novella, & I would normally avoid a book this short, but this was part of a book club reading. I put off purchasing as long as possible, just cause I was not thrilled with another novella reading. The characters are likable. The book comes with a side of sweet, & the usual insta-love typical for shifter/paranormal romance books. The world building could be better. But the book fell short with events in the plot, there are a lot gaps, that are totally glossed over (like the fact he’s ready to claim her as a mate, but she didn’t want to be turned into a bear shifter). I think a dozen more pages could have made a huge difference to the overall story while still short enough to remain a novella.

Emery and Graylan are likable characters who happen to live across from each other. She is on her way home on icy roads when she ends up in the ditch. Her landlady can think of no one more qualified to rescue her than her new tenant, the bear shifter from across the hall. That's all it takes for the sparks to fly between these two. But, secrets cause dissension, and neither of them are sure if this is something that could last until they find themselves in too deep.

It was a sweet story and an easy read. It moved a little fast for me, and what the characters had seemed a bit shallow. I would have liked to see more build between them before the ending and for the anxiety and conflict to be a bit deeper. But, it was a good story and sweet read for the Christmas holiday. I liked it.

FREAKEN FANTASTIC!!!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE HER WORKS OF ART!!! She puts a smile on my face and in my heart just reading her books. I love them so much. ALL OF THEM!! Her books are fast paced, hard to put down. Once you start a book sit down because you will not be able to stop reading until it is finished. Then if it is a series you can't wait for the next book to come out to read. T. S. Joyce ROCKS!!! I give her a 10 out of the 5 stars if I could. The only thing bad is it seems like it was to short. I wanted it to keep going until they had a lil baby. LoL. But then who knows I might of still of wanted more lol.

Great Christmas short story!

A quick wonderful Christmas story. I've been in the mood for a happy ever after Christmas stories and this is one that hit the spot. I have read about all of the Breckinridge bears but somehow missed this one.
I love that Grayson and Emry found what they most needed at Christmas time. This can be read as a stand alone book but I encourage you to read any of the author's books.

This was a short, sweet read. Graylan is a wandering bear shift going from town to town taking odd jobs and never getting attached to any one until he meets Emry. There i an instant attraction when Graylan fishes Emry out of the ditch but he tries to hide it. The more he tries to fight his attraction to Emry the more he wants her. When he finally give in to his feelings it is a night they will never forget. I would recommend this book.

A short Christmas romance story.

T. S. Joyce is one of my favourite authors. Her books touch my heart in every way. Makes me laugh, cry, cringe and I just absolutely have fun reading them. This book is a short Christmas tale taking place in Breckenridge where the fire bears books take place. Its a happily ever after, mate finds mate love story with undeniable chemistry and swoon worthy bear shifter.

Wondering Bear

Graylan has never found a place to stay. He wonders from den to den without a crew, he is a line bear. Until one day he is asked to help his new neighbor get out of the ditch. Emry is renting a bedroom from her friend after a break up. She is over her ex and finds Graylan interesting, they have a great chemistry. This was a great quick read, with a bit of steam to go with it!

Every story is an "awe" some experience

I don't t think I have ever gotten through one of this author's books without tearing up. You would think after so many amazing stories they would start to "rinse and repeat", but no, each character is defined differently, interestingly engaging. Can't recommend more highly

Emry and Grayland

Ahhh! This is a sweet short story about a happy human and a grumpy bear shifter. Emry is a human trying to make Christmas more bearable for her Helena, her landlord after loosing her husband. Grayland is a grumpy polar bear shifter passing by the small town. Lovely! Highly recommended.

This was a cute short story that was nice to have as a holiday read. I loved that there was just enough drama but it mostly stayed sweet. Nothing intense like other books by this author, just a guy and a girl meeting and falling in love during the holidays-felt like a hallmark movie in a book. We even got a revisit from the blue-haired ladies!

A Great Shifter Christmas Short

This is the perfect read to relax with in front of the Christmas Tree with a cup of hot chocolate. It is short, hot, and shifter...need I say more. Ok, Graylan is a wandering bear shifter who has quite the attitude. Emry is a bubbly woman full of the Christmas Spirit. When these two meet, he and his bear has no chance.

Though I normally enjoy the indulgence of reading works from this author, this novella's plot and characters were too underdeveloped for me to believe in their love story and enjoy it. It was far too much of instalove, even for a paranormal romance, and the female character, Emry, was much too quick to know, understand, and accept everything about Graylan.

After the heartbreak of splitting with her guy that quickly moved on, Emry Mason lives in a local rooming house and tries to lift her landlady’s spirit by spreading Christmas joy when she learns bear shifter Graylan Young will be sharing her coffee mugs. Graylan’s happy he’ll be moving on soon or will he?
(BTW: This one-sitting read doesn't feature the fire bears of Breckenridge)

Christmas / Holiday / Shifter / Mates / Romance

⭐⭐⭐/5 🌶/5

A short and sweet holiday read. Not as good as others by T. S., Joyce I've read. I don't like the 'register with the government thing' aspect of the magic system. I thought it was a one-off thing in the last book. I hope it's not something she adds to all of her shifter series because I rather enjoy her writing.
