Marc Levy was born in France. When he turned eighteen, he joined the Red Cross, where he spent the next six years. In 1983, he created a computer graphics company based in France and the United States. Six years later, he co-founded an interior design and planning company with two friends; the company soon became one of the leading architecture firms in France.
At thirty-seven, Marc Levy wrote a story for the man that his son would grow up to be. In early 1999, his sister, a screenwriter (now a film director), encouraged him to send the manuscript to a French publisher, who immediately decided to publish If Only It Were True. Before it was published, Steven Spielberg (Dreamworks) acquired film rights to the novel. The movie, Just like Heaven, starring Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo, was a #1 box office hit in America in 2005.
After If Only It Were True, Marc Levy began writing full-time. Since then, he has written 18 novels. His work has been translated into 49 languages and has sold over 40 million copies worldwide.
In addition, Marc Levy has directed a short movie, written short stories and song lyrics for various artists, including Johnny Hallyday.
Le Figaro newspaper recently commissioned a nationwide poll asking the French to rank their favorite author: Marc Levy and Victor Hugo were #1.

Mia is a British actress who runs off to Paris to stay with her best friend after getting fed up of her husband's cheating. Their movie is due to come out soon, and since they're starring together Mia doesn't want to make a public scene of their separation so she changes her appearance and tries to lay low. Paul is an American author who moved to Paris after his first book was published, but since then his books have not been very popular, except for surprisingly in Korea. His friend concerned about his loneliness sets him up on a date using a dating site, with none other than Mia. The two meet and decide to stay friends but as time passes, their mutual attraction makes their pretense of friendship increasingly questionable.
Usually I would have just given this kind of book 3 stars but I'm feeling particularly belligerent today so it really feels like 2.5 stars instead of 3. There was just so much of it that made me roll my eyes. Like Mia hiding out without anyone recognizing her for so long, like if she's as famous as she's supposed to be I doubt a haircut and color are going to help. I guess that can be ignored though but then the whole thing with the dating site and their eventual agreement to stay friends and the constant convoluted plot twists, especially when . Or the caricaturist in general too felt like an unnecessary character. The plot was just kind of a mess and didn't flow well together and so much of it felt like it could have been left out. Also it was so cheesy and hard to buy into. I'm sure if you enjoy romantic comedy movies though you'd probably enjoy this book. I just am in a mood again and I guess it made it hard to get into this light read.

I honestly don't feel like reliving what I already wrote in my update besides the fact that I don't know if I would have liked this more in the original French or what. The dialogue seemed off to me and the plots (such as they were) did not seem realistic at all.
The book focuses on two characters. Mia who is an English actress who I guess is famous. And Paul, who is a writer who has become a success in Korea. Yeah you read that right.
I would honestly just say that this book is the literary version of the movie Drinking Buddies to me. You have two people who keep saying that they are not interested in each other, but keep doing enough to let you the audience know that they are interested in each other. Of course just like with that movie, I am reading a book knowing that these two people are terrible for each other. Heck, I would have liked the book more if the author had went with that as a plot instead of this yeah they are somehow falling for each other thing.
I didn't really like the flow since the book just felt stuck and then the action moves to Korea of all places. I wonder if the author has been there since I don't even get a sense of Korea. I just had to read about hotel rooms, some food, and Mia and Paul being asinine in another country.
I will admit it took me a bit to get into the writing style. (I often wonder how much is lost in translation??). However, it is a short book and I was engrossed before long.
This is the kind of book that puts a smile on your face while reading. I can definitely see this as a movie that I would enjoy watching. A great, light-hearted, short summer read.
A delightful love story set in Paris, where everything is not quite what it seems.
SUMMARY On the big screen Mia plays a woman in love. But in real life, she’s an famous British actress in need of a break from her real-life cheating husband. She escapes from London to Paris behind a new haircut, and a waitressing job at her best friend Daisy’s, restaurant. Paul is an American author, living quietly in Paris, and doing his best to stay out of the literary spotlight. When Paul’s best friend secretly sets him up with Mia through a dating website, the two are off to a laughable start. Paul and Mia‘s relationship status is “complicated” and they decide to remain “just friends.” But can men and women just be friends? While Mia tries to decide what to do about her philandering husband, Paul visits Korea for a book tour, where his books are surprisingly popular. But not everything is quite what it seems.
“One day, I’m going to live in theory, because in theory everything goes perfectly…“
“If I were going to read one of your books, which one would you recommend?” “I’d recommend one by another author.”
REVIEW P. S. from PARIS is a delightful romantic comedy set in the City of Love. It’s a fast-paced and light read perfect for a day at the park or on the beach. The Paris descriptions are enjoyable and many of the scenes will make you smile. Paul’s fear of media attention and flying on airplanes adds an endearing quirkiness to his character and, Cristoneli, Paul’s Italian editor of an American author in France has trouble actually speaking French and tends to bungle his words sometimes creating new and hilarious mixed up words. P.S. from PARIS is recommended for those who just want something a little light and funny topped with a scoop of romance. It’s marveful and spectaculous.
MARC LEVY was born in France. He has written 18 novels and his work has been translated into 49 languages. He currently lives in New York City and through a nation-wide poll has been ranked as one of France’s favorite authors.
This book didn't do it for me. It was a Kindle First book, and I'm glad it was free. I didn't like the writing. Like, at all. Perhaps it's better in French? The point of view felt lazy, not omniscient. The dialogue wasn't believable to me, which was unfortunate since the story relied on the heavy dialogue and minimal descriptions. The characters didn't seem like real people and the whole story just felt 'meh.' There was something missing -- I just didn't believe the characters or their stories. It also bothered me that I always had to assume when the characters were speaking French or English. I mean, duh, the story is in France, but four out of five of the main characters are native English speakers, so it seemed obvious to me that they would switch between languages. I think there was one scene in the novel where they were like "let's speak French."
I'm obviously in the minority here. A lot of people really like this book. I'm just not one of them.
I loved this book. Clean, straightforward writing with an engaging voice. Loved, loved, loved the twist and the ending. There were moments i laughed out loud. This book was "marvelful." : )
[February 17, 2018] A few days ago, I had a dream about this book. I dreamt that I bought it and read it and liked it a lot. So now I must buy it!
[November 13, 2020] The story is about a British actress who I imagined Lily James playing fleeing England to France to run away from her cheating husband, who is co-starring in their upcoming movie. She changes her looks and works as a waitress in her friend’s restaurant. On a dating site, she meets Paul, an American author who is also running away from his uproaring fame in San Francisco. After 6 failed publications, his publicist urges him to head to South Korea where his novels are bestsellers. Paul is in love with his Korean translator, but is afraid of flying. His best friends decide to bring him home, and the only way is for him to fall in love with a suitable girl.
I found the story cute, but not the best, it’s very simple and it has lots of great lines and ideas. It’s unique and very French. I loved how the author shed the light on North Korea all of a sudden and how that changed the story. I really liked the story of his friend who bought a cursed jewelry piece that he had to get rid of it to bring back his luck. The many paragraphs about writing are beautiful. But I didn’t like Mia, I didn’t like her friendship with Daisy, they didn’t seem like best-friends. I didn’t like it when she hid the drawing from Daisy till the end. Mia doesn’t seem like an honest person.
I liked the jumps and the eccentric sense in the story. My favorite part was the story of the translator, it’s very mission impossible! Don’t continue if you want to read the book! Paul’s girlfriend was a freedom fighter, she took his name but didn’t translate his books, she took them and wrote stories about life in North Korea where she ran away but she still fought for her family and other suffering countrymen. Her story is very touching, though she is cheating and stealing, I found her brave though manipulative. Paul ended up writing her story to win all that success and spread her cause.
The story is centered on romance, so obviously, the couple ends up together!
An unashamedly romantic novel from popular French writer Marc Levy. I’ve read quite a few of his love stories and they are all without exception gentle, charming, light and heart-warming, with a very French feel to them, a bit quirky with sparkly dialogue and engaging characters. I suppose overall they don’t amount to very much but I find them really enjoyable and it’s nice on occasion to read something that is no more than it pretends to be – a sweet love story. In this his latest offering, Mia an actress and Paul, a writer, meet up through a stratagem devised by friends and although each is currently involved with someone else it is obvious that true love will win out and everyone will live happily ever after. A few little unexpected plot developments make this a satisfying and entertaining read.
So, Goodreads tells me that Marc Levy is the most-read French author today and I wonder, really!? Contemporary French literature must be in a deep rut because this just won the price for the worst book I’ve read the entire year!! Fortunately, rarely do I encounter such weak writing and storytelling. This is quintessential light reading with a strong emphasis on the light part!
His writing skills and storytelling did remind me of a once famous writer in my native country; Margarida Rebelo Pinto, once the most read ‘novelist’ in Portugal. Luckily ‘tugas’ eventually found the light and moved on for better things. I just hope French will soon follow.
Avoid it if you consider yourself having any taste whatsoever or consider it you’re in for mindless nonsense garbage!
Although I hated Daisy for a big chunk of this book but I really wanted to visit her bistro someday. It's a very charming story set in Paris with witty characters. The turn of the events were unpredictable and some were serious. I loved it
Mia is a British actress who needs a break from her philandering husband and from her fame, so she travels to Paris and lives with her best friend. On the other hand, Paul is a writer whose first novel was a major hit but he just wants to runaway from fame so he ends up living in Paris. Both of them bump into each other and that's when love spreads in the air. The story is like a normal Bollywood film. Paul is a great character. Anyone who is a writer will love his character. Actually what make this novel good is the scenes of the novel. The scenes are descriptive and written smoothly. You actually feel like you are roaming on the streets of Paris. While reading the descriptive scenes of Paris, I was mentally there. What is not working is the story. Mia is British actress. She can't hide in Paris and no one could recognize her. And yes, what I did not like is the way writers are portrayed, like how Paul has been portrayed( shy and running away from fame). I mean who doesn't like fame, If I would be a successful writer one day, I would like to sign books and all. I would recommend this book to those who love reading Dramas and to writers to check how scenes are written.
This is an interesting romance novel because the author is male (!) and it is translated from the French(!) It was in my Kindle backlog and I went looking for romance. I would say it was fine, but not great. Because of the order of the story, and the weird tendency for both main characters to mutter under their breath, and some repetition, it wasn't as good as I was hoping. But it was light and easy just the same, and it's not often we have male romance authors, so I had to give it a try.
