Excellent series
The author did a great job with his 2 types of powers given to the characters. The use of these abilities (reading another's mind and the other guiding another's actions) were well described. Characters had different levels of ability and these different levels were skillfully woven into the story. The build-up to the end in the final book was both exciting and exhausting. I found the way the author ended the series to be very satisfying.

This is an amazing series from start to finish.
It had me hooked from the the first page. Would highly recommend this book.

I didn't know what to expect with this omnibus. I had purchased it at a discount on a whim, given the good reviews by Goodreads readers.
It follows a young man as he discovers a secret society of people living in our midst with mental powers to read someone's thoughts or to command people. The five books delve further and further into the details of this community, which is at odds with itself. The storyline is engaging, intriguing, and inventive and got me to read the entire series instead of stopping after book one and coming back later finish it.
Easily recommended. 4 stars

Fun read!
A little over a year ago I read the .5, 1, & 2 volumes of this series. I just re-read them along with the remaining volumes. Darren narrates the activity in first person voice so it's easy to get a feeling for his somewhat snarky character. Along the way we meet his friends and family - most of the family he has never met before. Darren has been the unexpected recipient of an incredible genetic jackpot. His parents both had some amazing mind control (mother) and mind reading (father) abilities passed down through generations of selective breeding. However the mind controlling Guides and the mind reading Readers are at war with each other. Somehow Darren's parents sidestepped the hatred between their respective camps, got married and had Darren. Then they died. Murdered of course Darren never knew this. He was adopted and raised by a loving pair of moms. This collection is about his life and his introduction to his lineage and all kinds of crazy stuff that ensues in the process. All in all, this was an entertaining series.

Loved it. Some slow parts but still great.
Its a great story. Theres a whole rollercoaster of emotions you experience. Of course some descriptions get annoying but it happens with a lot of books. The descriptions are also integral to understanding the plot and the extent of some of the concepts Zales proposes.
If you like sci-fi/fantasy and powers, you should enjoy this book.
Its got a great and complex storyline that surprises you at different turns.
There's little romance in this series but thats expected as he didn't intend it to be a romance. It's satisfying to see who ends up together but it he doesnt go in depth about their romances.

Pretty good, but
This story was outstanding in the beginning, but I just couldn’t finish it. The concept is interesting and I had no trouble buying into it, but basically the main character never shuts up and I simply couldn’t take all of the dialogue. For example, the hero of the story is told that if he doesn’t get himself to his mother then his mother will die. So does he make sure to get himself home in time to save his mother? Well yes, but only after debating with the person who warned him. Maybe it’s the author’s attempt to build suspense, to argue with everyone under the sun about everything under the sun but I just found it to be frustrating. I found myself skipping past so much dialogue that I eventually lost track of the story. At that point I just gave up.

I give it 4 stars because despite being 4 books I flew through them. I simply appreciate the world the author built into our natural world. The book was fast-paced, featuring no shortage of action. When the characters weren't in some sort of perilous conflict, the author killed two birds by making the characters interact in a way that both developed them and the world (setting). The well thought out back stories served to create the hidden world inside the reader's familiar world. Considering how short the books were (or felt) the plot was developed just enough. This is a good, short thriller for fans of a little sci-fi/fantasy, but it doesn't leave you with a lasting emotional toll.
Bonus points for being slightly more adult than young adult.

An overall interesting story...but some of the individual books could've used some work
It's not often that I read an entire series so the fact that I read this one is really saying something. I'm glad that I started with book 1 instead of 0 since book 1 was outstanding while book 0 was rather...not. Granted I am not fond of Mira's character but the writing itself seemed rather drab. Book 2 was similarly not that enthralling. While it was better than book 0, the story didn't come alive like it did in book 1 (and like it did in book 4 for that matter). All in all though not a bad read.

I wish I could read it again and again - high praise from me as I don't like to read anything multiple times - and experience it new every time.
The premise is INSANE and wonderful and outrageous and,... captivating. Stopping time, engaging with others without their knowledge. The levels, the imagination, I am truly speechless and want to read all if the books again!

Took me some time

These books were amazing, and I loved diving into the powers of this secret society of superhumans. However, one of the books completely turned me off from the author because it contained some racist undertones. It implied that only Caucasian people possessed these powers and could hold this status. The one time a person of color was mentioned, it was framed as a shock, “he must be mixed with white.” An otherwise great story was ruined for me by realizing the author might be writing from a place of superiority. In today’s climate, that didn’t sit well with me. If it hadn’t been for that one line, I probably would have continued reading every book this author released.

Smart, different & engaging
I usually read romance novels & actually stumbled upon this author & his wife from Amazon's pick of the month. This series was very different from my normal read, but it was worth the try. Very intriguing & creative. I will continue to read more of their books!

Very nice
It's rare to get an original story or created world these days. Most books even good ones are to some degree a rehash of old stories. This book is an original system of magic of you want to call it that. Readers and guides is a great concept and a very entertaining world. Recommended.

If the whole story had been condensed to about 30-50% of its length it might have been good. But I hate it, when authors spiral the same theme again and again in variations. The first iteration was entertaining. 0.5 was unnecessary. The second iteration was still ok, but during the 3rd iteration I started to get bored and by the 4th one I started resenting it and just wanted to end the story.

Amazing Original Ideas
I really enjoyed these books, because it had several very original ideas that I have not previously encountered. I was so surprised I just kept reading all 4 volumes and enjoyed them all.
I am already investigating Zales other books and they appear just as original, so I’m excited to start them next.

Very Different Kind of Story
This was an intriguing story from beginning to end. Readers can read your mind. Guides can convince you to do something with their minds. I enjoyed the concept. It was very well written, and the story was filled with suspense and excitement.

I love whoever invented the Omnibus. It is a fun word to say. Go on and say it. Omnibus. Omnibus. See how fun it is. I always enjoy getting the most out of my buck so the omnibus is awesome and so is the person who decided it was a good idea to put more than one book together. I was sent this omnibus to read and review.
This is an interesting series about people who have special abilities. They are able to step out of their bodies and watch the world around them. Time stands still while they are in this state so they can find out information about people etc. They can also go further and touch a person to read their mind. This is a power I wouldn't mind having at all but of course with power comes the danger factor.
Darren grows up with two moms who think he's crazy because he told them about what he could do. He meets another person who can do the same thing so he tracks her down and finds out about the world of Readers and Pushers. He gets a huge bombshell about himself and before he knows it he's smack dab in the middle of absolute craziness.
I really enjoyed this series. It is written in such a way that it seems like it could be possible since it seems to be like astral projection with an added boost. I also like Darren who is easy to relate to. I'm sure a lot of us can relate to finding out something that we didn't know about that makes things go all topsy turvy. I look forward to checking out more books by this author.

October 12, 2016The fantasy is fantastic: A young man is able to stop time, walk around to find out what other betters have in their hands while in a casino, or walk around a classroom to cobble together the answers to a test. He can even "nudge" people into doing what he wants. The writing could have been improved by giving the characters different speaking styles.
