It is a good introduction for Chinese literature, which keeps the most vivid oral expression of Qian Mu and many inspired passages. The book contains 31 chapters, from The Book of Songs to the novels of Ming and Qing Dynasty, running through the whole Chinese ancient literature. Perhaps it is not an ideal history of literature nor a precise textbook, however, it is lively and effective, making us inspired. 或许并不是“理想”的文学史，或许并没有严谨到可用作教科书，但它有活泼的生命力、有效治学的方法、令人眼睛发亮的顿悟。一本好的书，它本身只是起点，它可以让读者从起点出发，向知识更远更深处独立前进，钱穆先生的《中国文学史》就是这样的书，它是启发者，点燃许多人对中国文学的兴趣，让人忍不住去阅读和思考它所提及的作品和知识。从此种意义上，它超越了那些严肃严谨的文学史。
