Suzanne was born in Southern California sometime in the latter half of the 20th century. In the way that some people are born knowing they want to be astronauts or cellists, Suzanne always knew she wanted to be a writer. Early dreams of becoming a zoologist and writing true stories about her adventures in Africa were crushed, however, after she viewed a television special about the world’s most poisonous snakes; she did NOT want to write about how she’d been bitten and lost a limb to a cobra. Thankfully at the same time the movie “Star Wars” premiered, and she realized that she could make up adventures and write about them, and not be eaten by deadly predators while doing research.

She dabbled in romantic fantasy writing for a year or two after graduating with a degree in English from the University of California, Irvine, until her affection for traditional Regency romances led her to write one for fun. After several encouraging rejections from publishers, she snared the interest of the world’s best and most patient literary agent, who advised her to revise the manuscript. This ultimately led to the publication of her first book, The Black Duke’s Prize, from Avon Books in the Spring of 1995. A second Regency, Angel’s Devil, followed that Fall.

When Avon folded its traditional Regency line, Suzanne was encouraged to try her hand at historical romance. As she remained keenly interested in England’s Regency period, she decided to attempt another manuscript set in that time. Lady Rogue hit the shelves in March of 1997. She wrote a total of 29 books for Avon, including two anthologies and a five-part contemporary series which received a pair of starred reviews from Publishers Weekly. One of those books, Twice the Temptation, was named one of the five best romances of the year by PW in 2007.

In 2002 her well-known love of all things “Star Wars” led to an invitation to appear on the E! channel in the television special “Star Wars: The Force Is Back”, where she discussed the romance in the movie series and ended up with more air time than George Lucas.

In 2010 Suzanne left Avon Books for St. Martin’s Press, where she continues to pen historical romance novels. Her 31st book, Taming an Impossible Rogue, is set to arrive in March 2012.

Suzanne is known for her humorous characters, sexy bad boys, and whip-sharp, witty dialogue. She currently resides in Placentia, California with several hundred guppies and various other tropical fish, and handful of very loud, spinach-loving finches. And her collection of action figures and statues from “Star Wars”, “Lord of the Rings”, “X-Men”, and “Pirates of the Caribbean”. Everybody needs some inspiration, after all.

My One True Kidnap victim…

Why is it always so much more disappointing when what you wished for is granted…and not all it’s cracked up to be? In My One True Highlander we meet Marjorie, the Duke of Lattimer’s sister. Now Marjorie hasn’t been a duke’s sister for long. Well, she’s always been Gabriel’s sister, but Gabriel hasn’t been a duke for long. What she thought would be an escape from a life as a well-educated Lady’s Companion to a life as a successful lady herself, hasn’t turned out well. The Ton snubbed her and her former friends were uncomfortable with her new position in society. She’s not accepted or wanted anywhere in London. With Gabriel so far away on his estate in the Highlands, she’s struggling with her loneliness.

When Marjorie receives mail from her brother who announces he’s getting married in the Highlands, she sees this as a great way to escape from London. With her companion, Mrs Giswell, and a couple of drivers, they set off to surprise the Duke and his fiancé.

Marjorie’s plans go haywire when she’s kidnapped only 6 hours away from her destination. Her first thoughts are that she is going to be held for ransom, but when she meets her captors, she realises it’s a little more than the money they’re after.

Graeme can’t believe his brothers have kidnapped a Lady. As if he doesn’t have enough on his plate? With looking after his siblings and the people on his land, the Laird can’t even find the time or coin for a hair cut. She’s a bonny lass, but that won’t help him when Lattimer attacks his home looking for his sister. Or, for that matter, the Dunncraigh who wants her as a weapon against Lattimer. Graeme does not want to be in the middle of a clan feud. He needs to spin this so that everyone will stay safe, and if could gain a bit from it, well, who’s he to complain.

In the end, I enjoyed My One True Highlander but up until the 30% mark, I was ready to give up. It was bloody BORING!! It just took too long for her shackles to be removed and for the story to change from a warden and prisoner story to a love story with loyalty, intrigue and passion. Eventually, the characters grew and with some inner-reflection, Marjorie realises that love is better than a ballroom and Graeme realises that love won’t ruin him.

I finished the story with a smile on my face. Graeme's brother Connell was a sweetheart. I also loved the budding relationship between the Blacksmith and Mrs Giswell. But, I can’t forget that first 30%, so it wasn’t a complete win for me.

This book was so much fun!!!

...not exactly like this, but I coulnd't resist... LOL

This is essentially a story from enemies to lovers, but it is marvelously done! Usually I find annoying if there're many instances of inner musings, but here they were planty but excellent.
They were somewhere between endearing, hilarious and serious. What an excellent mix!!!!

I loved Graeme and his honour! He's desperately trying to do the right thing, but his opponents are his brothers and the woman they've kidnapped! If he could he would have run away screaming and pulling his heir out! LMAOOO

Marjorie is wonderful too! A governess unexpectedly truned lady, she's been kidnapped by three boys and delivered to a bevildered Graeme to secure the wellbeing of his clan!

But Marjorie is not a wilting flower! She's intelligent and has her way with words! When Graeme confronts her, imprison her and chains her to the bed she lashes out and evey time it happens Graeme is more and more confused! LOL

Marjorie is not only good with words, she's smart and resourceful! And Graeme goes from wanting to throttle her to wanting something else entirely! *wink*

There are also some excellent secondary characters like Connell, the duckling, the youngest of Graeme brothers; but also the other two: hotheaded Brendan and levelheaded Dughlas.

Also Marjorie's companion Hortensia: a lady's companion who has already made a mess with another change and fights tooth and nail to make of Marjorie a success to redeem herself in her role!

Not to forget some less important, but not for that less fun characters: like the butler or the smith (who's smitten by Hortensia)!!!

The plot is not overly complicated, but the resolution of problems is fun and very, very entertaining! I loved every page!

This was like a nice book vacation to the Scottish Highlands. I like that Marjorie is practical but dreamy and Graeme is a good guy who has dedicated his young life to taking care of family. I personally don't get tired of Scottish books, although I can get bored with Regencies, a little. Nice that this has plenty of the Scottish vibe to give it some pizazz. Plus the kids were a lot of fun.

Marjorie, had the shock of her life when she learned that her brother had inherited a title and she went from servant to lady of the Ton overnight. Marjorie, however, never truly found acceptance among society but she was determined to be accepted even if it killed her. When she hears word from her brother that he is engaged. Marjorie is tired of never seeing her only family, so in an effort to surprise him travels to Scotland with only her lady companion and two drivers to accompany her. But while taking a rest at a inn, she finds herself kidnapped by three young boys and lands in the lap of none other Grame, a highlander and Scottish Laird and Viscount. Graeme is working on getting funds to build up his clan and keep from being embroiled in a war. But when he learns that his three younger brothers have kidnapped an innocent lass, he is outrage and has no choice but to keep Marjorie in his home until he figures out how to fix the situation. Soon Marjorie goes from being held captive, to earning her captor's trust, and discovering a fresh new outlook on life in the rugged Highlands and a passion with one certain Highlander who has only shown her tenderness. But she needs to make a choice her dreary life in London, or a life full of passion and love and family in the Highlands...
The Hero
Graeme, was just a young man when his mother died and his father committed suicide, leaving him and his three younger brothers to fend for themselves and a clan to take care of. Graeme, took up the responsibility of seeing to his brother's upbringing and seeing to the needs of every man, woman and child under him that looked to him for leadership. But it was never something he ever asked for. Graeme made a vow to himself to never fall into the trap called "love" like his father did, leaving behind children in need of care. Grame was a hero you can easily swoon head over heels for. He is strong, a leader, compassionate and kind when needed but firm with his siblings. I love the way he is with his brothers and most especially the youngest---eight-year-old Connell. But what really wins you over is how he is with the heroine. I loved how he doesn't hide his feelings from her or the truth, he is always honest. I liked how he could be playful and serious and in between both.
He wanted to be gentle with her. He wanted to know every inch of her, spend long evening before the fireplace in her company, wake to find her sleeping in his arms.
The Heroine
Marjorie was only a young girl when she lost her parents, and then her brother went to serve in the military and she was forced on her own in a boarding school. She became self-sufficient, thinking she would spend her life as a paid companion or servant or even a governess the rest of her life. Her world gets turned around when she learns that she is to be trained to be a lady. Even though she knows the protocols of being in society, she soon learns that being accepted in Society is way more difficult. At first you aren't sure what to think of Marjorie, since she is so driven to do what she can to be the "proper lady" in London. But we see deep down its her desire to be loved and accepted. Marjorie goes through her own self journey in this book, discovering what really matters and to fight for what you want. She is practical but still has her own dreams too.
Plot and Story Line
My One True Highlander was simply fantastic and I had such a good ole time reading this book and man Suzanne Enoch did a superb job writing this book. I will admit I was nervous about this one, since book one was alright but not my favorite and didn't know what she would do with this one. But she really stepped up for this novel and I was so delightfully pleased with how it turned out. This story is a enemies to lovers trope so we have a slight angst in the story especially in the beginning, but it doesn't have a super strong angst feel to it. It might have some angst between the couple but their bantering is so amusing and fun, that it leaves you with a breath of fresh air.
"I reckon ye're chilled."
"I've been sitting in a cold room and in a damp gown for hours. Am I supposed to be grateful that you've finally realized I might be uncomfortable?"
"Nae. Ye could stop yammering aboot it and follow me to where it's warmer, though."
"Heathen."
You have a delightful mix of a couple here especially at first. Our heroine is so prim and proper at first which clashes with our hero who is rugged, swears frequently and doesn't care what others think and says exactly what is on his mind. So these two definitely have words....but what fun their interactions were and I just wanted more of it. Then we add in some fun side characters, an intriguing and suspenseful plot and some sensual moments and this book packs a punch. I want to mention that characters that you fall in love with. First is Connell. Now he was such a cutie. He is an eight year old, very curious about the world around him. And I just loved seeing that and he is so wonderful for Marjorie. He also has such a kind heart and is always taking in stray animals especially those that are orphans because he is an orphan like his brothers. So I fell in love with his character pretty quickly. The next character that made an impression is Mrs. Giswell. She is Marjorie's companion and she was a delight. She is so proper all the time but has a good sense of humor and I really enjoyed her role in the story. We do get to see Marjorie's brother again and it was interesting to see how he and Graeme clashed, no surprise when two alpha's enter a room together hehe. Then we have the romance, and what a delightful mix this was. I seriously couldn't get enough of seeing these two together especially once they let go of the animosity between them and embrace what they feel which doesn't take too long. They build a foundation of trust and desire and the dynamics over all were very well developed.
Until I met ye I didnae realize there would be laughter, and arguing, and quiet, and calm, and peace, and heat, and strength, and two people feeling all those things at the same time, together.
The writing here is compelling and pulls the reader pretty quickly in the story and I just didn't want to put this down. So another win for Suzanne Enoch and highly recommend this to romance lovers everywhere.

The Cover
What a gorgeous cover, probably one of my favorites that this publisher has done. I love the colors with the green and red and I like the hint of plaid, and I just get a kick out of the way the couple here are situated...very sensual.
Overall View
My One True Highlander is a delightful mix of sexy bantering, hints of sensuality, a picturesque Scottish setting and likable character that will keep you thirsting for more. A WINNER

MY ONE TRUE HIGHLANDER is the second book in the No Ordinary Hero series by Suzanne Enoch. Now I’m a huge fan of Suzanne Enoch’s Historicals. I think if you’re a fan of Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn, and even Tessa Dare, then you’ll probably like Enoch as well. However, this book does have a different feel to it than some of her other books. While the others tend to be a little more witty, this one has a greater intensity to it. I say that mostly because of the hero. As you can expect with the title of this series, you’re going to get some different heroes in this series. In this particular book, our hero is a rugged highlander named Graeme and he is quite the character. He’s borderline rude to the heroine but that’s because she was literally dropped into his lap because of his pesky brothers. The heroine, Lady Marjorie, is the sister to the previous hero of the last book and as a Duke’s sister, Graeme’s brothers think that she might be useful to them so they kidnap her and bring her to their chieftain. Oh course, Graeme had no idea they were going to do this so in an effort to rectify things, he suggests that Marjorie marry him to save her reputation.

Majorie is so not on board with this plan and she does a good job of holding her ground. I really enjoyed her character. I would say she’s more likeable than the hero, just because he can be a little more gruff. The beginning is slow to start, but because these two meet in less than stellar standards, you’re obviously going to have that gap before the romance can start. Since the hero isn’t really the lovey dovey type either, that also affects how the romance pans out so this book does require a touch more patience than her previous books.

Also, I want to note that if you’ve never read a Highlander book before and aren’t well accustomed to their sexy gruff talk, then you may have some trouble understanding what the hero is saying. I say this because Graeme’s accent is THICK. It’s thicker than what most authors would do but I really enjoyed it because it added so much to his character. I just wanted to mention that in case you may not be as familiar with their speech because I can see some other readers getting confused by it.

Lady Marjorie is on her way to the Highlands in order to surprise her older brother and his soon to be wife. What Marjorie did not know was that she was stumbling right into the middle of a clan war, and her brother is involved.

Graeme is a chieftain of clan Maxton. When his chief of Clan Maxton asks him to stand against Lattimer and be rewarded. Graeme finds a lot of trouble on his hands. First, he is unsure if he wants to kill the new Duke, but he is also aware that their money is running low and he has a lot of people relying on him.

Well, when his younger brothers overhear the conversation, they step up in an attempt to help. But, when they kidnap the duke's sister and dump her under Graeme's roof, the trio instead, end up causing more trouble for Graeme then good.

This was so much fun. It's my first book by Enoch and I am super glad I read it. I enjoyed it so much, I really want to go back and read the first book, since the first book kind of sets up the conflict between Lattimer and Maxton.

Graeme and Marjorie were delightful. I love the slow romance that builds between them, despite the conflict that Graeme's brother's have caused. But, Graeme was not the one who kidnapped her, nor did he ever intend on doing so. Still, watching the two butt heads was super fun and amusing.

I especially had a fun time when Graeme dug himself such a hole that he had to go out of his way and commit a similar crime by kidnapping Marjorie's lady companion.

I also loved the family dynamics happening there. Graeme has been taking care of his younger brothers for a long time, on top of taking care of people who live on his land. He is hard working and loyal to a fault. Definitely someone that Marjorie needed by her side, considering his Chief of the clan would love to see her dead in order to get back at her brother.

Gah this was fabulous. It reminds me how much I love historical romances set in Scotland and feel the need to read more. The book started a bit slow for me, as it took me a few pages to get used to the dialect again. But once I was set, it took off and never really let me go. I really, really enjoyed everything about this - including the writing.

I did feel bad for Graeme. He was put in a bad predicament. He didn't want to give Marjorie up to his Chief because he knew she would get hurt, but he also couldn't let her go because he had his brothers to worry about.

I think the only thing I did not like about this was Marjorie being so hung up on London and her belonging there even if she never really did. She is a new heiress and is having trouble fitting in. She is lonely and would need to spend a lot of money and a lot of years trying to get people in that society to care and would likely marry a fortune hunter.

She fits right into Graeme's household and grew on everyone around here and there, people cared.

Also, the ending felt like it wrapped up a little too perfectly.

But, overall, this was a fun read and I really enjoyed this. This review was originally posted on Night Owl Book Cafe

ARC provided by NetGalley and Publisher for an honest review.

While I thought the writing was good and pacing started off well, a third into the book I found myself losing interest and became disengaged from the characters. It could have been me and just not really in the mindset for this setting.

Marjorie Forrester, is a governess/lady maid until her brother becomes a Duke and she then becomes Lady Marjorie. Hoping and thinking London society will accept her, she finds the opposite is true and they treat her poorly as she's not "really one of them". Discouraged, she decides to go visit her brother in Scotland who is about to be married. Her and a lady's maid stop at an Inn on their journey and are kidnapped.

Graeme, Viscount Maxton is chieftain struggling to keep his siblings (he is the oldest and parents both have died), land and coffers all together. His younger brother thinks he can help by kidnapping the sister of their new neighbour, the Duke of Lattimer. The brother thinking it could help give his brother, Graeme leverage or help to negotiate for political reasons, the securing of their lands, also leverage and monies.

And so the story supposedly takes off from there. But I found that's when is became predictable and monotonous. The bickering and back and forth between the main characters had no real resolution or depth to their conversations or purpose. I also didn't feel there was any connection between the two main characters and also their sex scenes were awkward and off to me, strange. I found the heroine to be somewhat irritating and unappealing. I liked Graeme and his dedication to his family and responsibility honorable.

The writing went from somewhat fluid to flat half way through the book. I found the secondary characters (brothers are sweet) likable but the ending was disappointing.

3.5 ⭐️ Not as strong as the first in the series, but still an entertaining Highland romance, especially if you’re in it for the scenery, the brogue, and the chaos of three meddling younger brothers.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
✨ historical romance
✨ scottish highlands
✨ he's a struggling chieftain
✨ she's the sister of an English duke
✨ kidnapping (sort of accidental, by kids)
✨ captive x captor
✨ insta-lust
✨ dislike-to-love
✨ virgin heroine
✨ 2/5 spice
✨ adorable animal friends
✨ political tension
✨ HEA

My Thoughts:

Audiobook: 5 ⭐️
Story: 3 ⭐️

I really enjoyed the first and last 25% of the book, but the middle dragged a bit for me. The pacing slowed, and while I liked Graeme and Marjorie, I didn’t feel their chemistry as much as I wanted to. Their romance didn’t hit quite as hard emotionally, and I found myself more charmed by the supporting characters. Connell (the youngest brother) was the highlight for me. He was so funny, sweet, and surprisingly convincing as voiced by the audiobook narrator.

The narration overall was great! The accents are on point and the character voices (especially the kids) are really well done. Definitely recommend grabbing this one from your library if you’re an audiobook listener!

Not a standout favorite, but still a cozy, Highland escape.

Suzanne Enoch's highlanders are usually not real highlanders. They were mere shadows of their ancestors, the "tamed" version, so to speak. One could look at Suzanne Enoch's "highlander stories" almost as regency stories, just featuring Scottish heroes or heroines. Think ballgowns with a brogue.

The above is true for this book as well. I have read most of her famous "Scandalous Highlanders" series and only liked the first book. This book reads almost like the old series but honestly if it was done well, I would not have minded. This book is better than the first book in the series in my eyes because this heroine isn't as stupid as the heroine in the first book. Marjorie was the sister of the hero from the first book, she was abducted by the hero's younger brothers on her way to her brother's wedding. Graeme was trying to be Scottish in a Scotland that was very much under English influence. Like all Enoch's Scottish heroes, he was trying desperately to hold on to his ancestors' heritage without much success. His (really) young brothers thought abducting Marjorie would help him and the family. So Graeme and Marjorie ended up together in Graeme's house.

The thing about this book is, not much happened. At 40% to 50% Graeme and Marjorie were still just snapping at each other without having had much interaction. The attraction was not there. But it was written so that they were attracted to each other. I did not feel it. Graeme proposed thinking that it would save his family from being hanged because that was the only way he could think of to get Marjorie on their side. Marjorie, the indignant abducted heroine of course refused profusely. Then boom they had sex, just like that. I was asking myself whaaaaaaat? Enoch's heroines are all some kind of a light skirt, I have to say. They fall into bed with men way too easily without ever considering the ramification of their actions. I find that extremely unlikely for noble women of that time to just do away with their virginity without a thought.

Overall the story is unremarkable. But Enoch writes a fluid story so it is readable. I went through the book absent-mindedly because that is all you need for books like this. One highlight is Graeme's youngest brother. He was quite a delight but I have seen Enoch do it in other books. It seems to be a mechanism she uses to entice readers. Once you notice the pattern, such innocence loses its appeal as well.

"My One True Highlander" was an absolute treat to read! Ms Enoch provides some truly memorable characters and a storyline that is an enjoyable, effortless read filled with humor , danger and of course what is a romance , without romance.
Our heroine Lady Marjorie Forrester, the sister of the newly minted Duke of Lattimer resides in Mayfair, London home given to her by her brother with all the funds she should need a reversal of fortune for both of them, especially since at the age of eight she found herself without her parents and her Seventeen year old brother buying a commission to go off to war and support her, she wa sent to the Rey best of boarding schools , taught how to be a lady and upon graduation began taking up positions as a Lady's companion so as not to be fully dependent on her brother, for in war their was always the possibility he may not return. However , now as a lady herself she wishes desperately to be accepted by the ton, going so far as to hire a companion to help her gain credibility amongst the ton. The ton however only see her and her brother as up jump Duke and Lady; ones that deceived them , however neither Marjorie or Gabreil new of their connection to the previous Duke.
Still shunned by the ton, when a letter from her brother arrives telling her he will be marrying within the month but not to come since the weather will be turning bad in the highlands , that she can visit in the spring ; well Marjorie does not think twice of packing up her companion and herself and heading off to Lattimer in the Highlands to surprise her brother.
Best laid plans however can go quickly a rye . Stopping at an inn and rest the horses in the highlands Marjorie seeks some quiet, for as much as she appreciates her companion Lady Hortensia Griswell, well Ms Griswell can be grating after a while, so Marjorie sets herself outside just for a bit, which is when she meets one of in my opinion the cutest and most memorable characters of the story; young eight year old Connell Maxton, young Connell gains Marjorie's attention requesting that she help rescue some stranded kittens , though having second thoughts given the wilds of highlands and being a women traveling essentially on her own Marjorie reasons with herself; what could an eight year old do to her.
Marjorie's reasoning fails her when she finds herself kidnapped by Connell and his brothers, though not Connell's idea he did lure her into it at the encouragement of his brother Branden. Brandon sees Marjorie as the saving grace for his brother and his clan; after all the Duke of Dunncreigh hates The Duke of Lattimer and would pay a high price for his sister wh he could use as leverage against him.

Marjorie finds herself tied to a chair in a morning room facing the very unhappy Viscount ( Laird) Graeme Maxton; Graeme is now left to figure out how to protect his brothers , because if he turns her over to Dunncreigh, he may be in good standing with him , however. Bordering the Lattimer lands , he would put himself , his brothers and his crofters in certain danger from her brother.
Having spent time thinking about it he decides the best to do is hold her captive until she agrees to marry him, he will gain her funds, protection from her brother the Duke of Lattimer and prevent her from being considered ruined. What Graeme does not expect is a witty young Lady set to defy his wishes and determined to return home, or a Ladies companion that sets out searching for her mistress on her own claiming she is her neice, as the plot twist and turns the attraction between Marjorie and Graeme does also and the Young heathens as Lady Griswell refers to the boys grow on Marjorie and you the reader. Young Connell" duckling" endears himself to you with his desire to save all the orphaned animals he finds and bring them into the family home. Perhaps because he himself was a young orphan also, raised and cared for by his older brother Graeme after his parents death, then of course their is the sixteen year old angry Branden and the levelheaded Dughlas. Through it all Graeme finds himself troubled at having gone from just protecting his younger brothers and clan to finding that he has come to love the impossible , impertinent Sassenach.
Much like you will come to love this story!

Refer to Mei's review here cause that was all it took to get me reading this.

A first of it's kind for me and not what embodies Highlanders in my opinion but this was so much fun to read. No stops, finished it in one sitting.
Which is also why this is a very short review. There's only so much abuse one's bladder can take. xD

This is a historical highland escapade with clan disputes, daring younger brothers and danger as well as romance. Following her brother unexpectedly becoming the Duke of Lattimer, Lady Marjorie Forrester is still coming to terms with her new station in life and members of the ton seem reluctant to accept her newly elevated status. Her brother has moved to his new estate in the Highlands and, when Marjorie learns that he is planning to marry, she decides to surprise him by leaving London to visit him and meet his betrothed.

She sets out with her companion, Mrs Giswell, and a couple of drivers Unfortunately she was unaware of the clan wars in the area and is kidnapped en route. Her captors turn out to be the younger brothers of the laird of the area and their antics leave him with a serious dilemma. Should he send her on to her brother who owns the neighbouring land or to his Chieftain who is in dispute with her brother. He knows that his brothers will be in trouble if her brother learns of their actions but that he will be in danger if his Chieftain learns he had her captive and didn’t hand her over to him - he doesn’t want to get stuck in the middle of the clan feud. He’s stuck between a rock and a hard place - even more so when he’s attracted to this feisty lass!

The story has great characters, from the so practical yet ingenious Marjorie, to her companion, the very proper ’determined to be seen to follow the rules’ Mrs Giswell, and onto the hardworking Graeme and his brothers. There’s intrigue, confrontation, mischief, danger and the beautiful Highland setting in this delightful novel which is a lovely story to escape into for anyone who enjoys their Regency romantic suspense with a distinctly Scottish flavour.

I requested and received a copy of this story via NetGalley and this is my honest review after reading it.

I really liked this one! I think it was better than the first. So much drama but I am starting to get the impression that the Scots bring all the drama and I’m here for it.
Lady Marjorie‘s brother recently became part of the peerage and engaged to a Scottish Laird, so she wants to surprise him by coming to Scotland to meet his soon to be bride. Accept she gets kidnapped, by Scottish children of clan Maxwell and now their oldest brother wants to marry her for her money.
Chaos and romance ensue and Marjorie has to decide if she wants to go back to London or stay in the Highlands.

This is the second book in Suzanne Enoch’s No Ordinary Hero series and I enjoyed it more than the first. It is a wonderful story with lots of humor and romance.

The heroine, Marjorie Forrester, is tired of London. When her soldier brother, Gabriel, inherits a dukedom and moves to Scotland he leaves her the mansion in London. But the “ton” doesn’t accept a former companion as a lady and she is lonely. Upon hearing Gabriel is to be wed, she and her companion, Hortensia, head for Scotland. While stopping at an inn near her brother’s property she is kidnapped.

Laird Graeme Maxton is raising his 3 younger brothers without much money. They decide to help him by kidnapping Lady Marjorie. The older 2 boys think their clan chief, who hates her brother, will pay well for her. Graeme decides to keep her until he can figure out how to return her without his brothers getting in more trouble. And then the fun starts. Hortensia may also find romance in the Highlands.

I especially love 8 year old Connell who rescues orphaned animals. He’ll steal your heart and I hope he gets a HEA when he’s grown. This book is a keeper that I’ll re-read. Honestly, who wouldn’t love a gorgeous man in a kilt caring for his younger brothers?

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me this ARC. Release date is April 4th

“My One True Highlander” by Suzanne Enoch is perfect catnip for lovers of the Scottish highlander subgenre of romance. I’ll admit it: I’m addicted to this genre. There’s something inherently romantic to me about the Highlands and a kilt, a brogue and a tall Highlander. If you are like me, and enjoy these things along with a great, funny plot and a sassy heroine, you will totally enjoy this book as much as I did.

The Story-
Marjorie was trained to be a lady’s maid or a governess, but when her brother is made a Duke due to distant family connections, she hopes to take her place among London society. Unfortunately, society sees her as an impudent upstart and refuses to accept her. Her brother’s recent marriage to a Scottish woman prompts her to travel to the Highlands for a visit and a respite from the cold, unfeeling people that are rejecting her. Graeme is a chieftan, unsure of how to placate the leader of his clan who wants to unseat the new English Duke in their region. When his presumptuous younger brothers kidnap the Duke’s sister in an ill-conceived plan to win favor, he is in a bit of a bind. But the Duke’s sister is not the fine, uppity lady he expected, and her situation becomes more complicated each day.

My Thoughts-
I’m having trouble deciding whether I enjoyed the plot or characters more for this one. Graeme’s brothers and his relationship with them is refreshingly different from most secondary character plot devices used in romance. They truly serve a purpose in the plot and provide depth to the story. Marjorie Is a great heroine, and I absolutely loved her backstory of not fitting in. It made her finding her place in the Highlands that much more satisfying. It also brought some humor to the situation as Graeme keeps being surprised by her.

The Bottom Line-
This book is thoroughly enjoyable, but will especially please those readers like me who love to be transported to Scotland. It avoids common pitfalls and provides a fresh plot while satisfying with beloved tropes. I cannot wait to go back and read the first book in this series and look forward to those to come. 5 stars

ARC KINDLY PROVIDED BY NETGALLEY FOR A HONEST REVIEW!!

My One True Highlander is a Historical Romance written at its best by Suzanne Enoch. I have been reading Ms. Enoch HR for about 15 years and this is one of her best stories. Its hitting all cylinders that Historical Romance readers love.

Lady Marjorie Forrester is the sister of the newly minted Duke of Lattimer, Gabriel Forrester. She is traveling with her Lady's Companion Hortenia Giswell to be with her brother when he marries. The two stop at a coaching Inn and Marjorie is kidnapped by 3 very unlikely kidnapper. One is the 8 year old Connell Maxton youngest brother of Viscount Graeme Maxton and Chief of his clan. I fell in love with young Connell. He is one of those characters with so much personality that he steals the show. What a cutie loveable little boy. Connell tricks Marjorie into following him and him and his 2 other brothers Brendon and Duglas tie her up and take her to there oldest brother Graeme to ransom her for the much needed money to secure there clan and lands. Graeme had no idea what his younger brothers were up to and the utter mess and complications they have bought on him and them by kidnapping the sister of a Duke. After the death of there father Graeme has been raising his 3 younger brothers and doing the very best he could to hold onto there Clan and there Lands. Now they are in a world of trouble with Lattimer and with the villain of the series Dunncraigh who is also a Duke but wants to control all of the clans and the surrounding lands. Dunncraigh will do anything even murder to be the controlling power.

Marjorie is a lovely well written character. She doesn't loses her wits and she Doesn't become the revengeful shrew like so many other kidnapped characters we read about. She is intelligent and kind and once she finds out that this wasn't Graeme fault or idea and the trouble that this will cause him and his young brothers she does everything she can to help them. Graeme is a romantic handsome and kind loving hero. All Alpha Male but with that sexy soft touch. The two fall in love in a very believable way. The few sex scenes are hot and sexy but not overly done or trashy. I just love these two they made the perfect story book romance.

My One True Highlander can be read alone. It Stands on its own merits and will give you enough back story from bk 1 that you don't feel lost at all. This story is very well written with great characterization. The scenes in the story are well done and you can actually see them in your minds eye.

I Highly Recommend "My One True Highlander" and I will purchase the kindle edition when it becomes available on April 4 2017!!

Let me be clear on something, I don't care what the situation, when you are having sex with someone you kidnapped and are holding prisoner it is a form of rape in my small mind. Just because it may seem consensual I see Stockholm Syndrome, call me odd but it is a bias I am not ashamed of at all.

I have talked to many people that have read historical romance for years (I tend to avoid it) and have no problem with swooning heroines and kidnapping so obviously it must happen a lot in this genre which I can add to my list of why I only read the ones that have been well written by authors that write original stories. Sadly this one teeters on the edge of that statement.

Marjorie has been thrust into London society and pretty much been ignored at best, insulted by most due to not having been born and living in high society for most of her life.

Graeme is a conflicted character since he really wanted no part of the kidnapping and is only interested in protecting his family and estate but he becomes her jailer/kidnapper regardless.

These two make for entertaining reading but at the same time I had to stop and think "Nobody would act like that" in too many situations.

I don't write spoilers but I was disappointed with the ending and I expected to see the The Beast of Bussaco from book 1 and I was seriously cheated in his appearance and the lack of anything that looked like action. The ending was rushed and seriously disappointing.

Bottom Line: This is more like pulp fiction which some like to read, I suppose it is entertaining but had to many things against it for me to give more than 3 Stars, it had the potential to be a great novel but as with book #1 this potential was squandered. If you want to read great historical romance and adventure I suggest you grab Kerrigan Byrne's Victorian Rebels series starting with The Highwayman , a true 5 Stars series in historical romance with unforgettable characters, this series pales in the comparison sadly but could have been just as good with a bit more effort. 3 Stars for the skeleton of a great story

I read one book and enjoyed so much, I highly anticipated book 2. My One True Highlander can be read alone and was just as delightful as the first. Despite the unorthodox way they met each other Graeme and Marjorie's relationship developed wonderfully. The pacing was a bit slow in the beginning. However, the simmer made it even more worthwhile when things started to heat up between them. Graeme's brother Connell was a delight, and he made the overall story even richer. All secondary characters made the story more rounded and only added to the richness of the plot.

This title wasn't really my cup of tea, but I did enjoy the beginning.

Marjorie Forrester is a recent woman of means intent on traveling to Scotland to visit her brother and attend his wedding. Graeme is a highlander trying to take care of his younger brothers, keep their home, and keep from angering their clan chieftain. When his brothers kidnap Ree, Graeme believes the only alternative is for him to marry Ree.

Honestly, the best part of the book is the beginning. I was fully invested after Ree's kidnapping and was looking forward to watching them get to know each other and become attracted to each other. This doesn't really happen. They're not attracted to each other one day and the next they are. For no real reason, either. I can't tell you what one liked about the other.

After the initial kidnapping, not much else happens. There was an opportunity here to have a lot happen but Ree only really makes one attempt at escape before deciding to lie for Graeme and his brothers. It just wasn't very realistic.

I didn't read the first book in this series and felt quite lost at first with all the names being thrown around but I figured it out soon enough.

Enoch spells out the accents every time a Highlander speaks so if that's not your thing, you might want to steer clear.

I did find the beginning of the book to be very engaging, and I really found myself wondering who the next book would be about. I'll probably give it a chance and see if it's a little more to my taste.

"My continued well-being would seem to be at your whim, sir," she returned. "I wouldn't call that level ground for an argument."

A slight smile curved his mouth. "Ye do have a point."

Arrogant man. Smiling at her as if he knew exactly how handsome he was and meant to use that to sway her weak little feminine brain into thinking him charming. Ha. And ha again. "I know I do."

FINAL DECISION: My enjoyment of this book grew as the story continued. By the end, the relationship between Graeme and Ree was so sweet and romantic that I would highly recommend this book especially for lovers of men in kilts!

THE STORY: Graeme, Viscount Maxton, is in a difficult position. The Highlander is offered wealth and status if he helps the head of the clan defeat his enemy, the new Duke of Lattimer. Hearing the offer, Graeme's three young brothers decide the kidnap the sister of the duke, who happens to be passing by. Now Graeme has to decide what to do with the woman without implicating his brothers. Lady Marjorie Forrester has recently been raised from a lady's companion to a lady herself with her brother's taking of the title. Ignored in London, she desperately wants respectability but finds herself captivated by the wild land and the Laird of the castle.

OPINION: This story built page by page until I was entirely enthralled when Graeme finally declares his love to Ree. One of the best parts of this book is that both characters are so eminently likeable.

Ree is a woman who expected a life of service until the fortunes of her brother changed (he unexpectedly inherited a dukedom) and thus her life changed as well. Determined to finally gain acceptance from society which had looked down on her despite her having the same education, Ree has lived a lonely life in London in the months since she became Lady Marjorie. The story really pulls out the tension of Ree wanting to belong and being determined that those who dismissed her will acknowledge her while at the same time making herself miserable. She isn't able to accept the idea that she might actually belong in Scotland because it isn't the future she imagined.

Graeme also has a blindness when it comes to Ree. He doesn't see her as a woman he could love -- because Graeme is determined never to fall in love. He has seen a destructive side to love which has made him shy away from that possibility. Instead, he has been a wonderful brother and substitute father in raising his three younger brothers. I loved that Graeme is such a responsible and caring man.

The relationship between Graeme and Ree develops with such a wonderful progression. They start out as combatants as Ree is kidnapped by Graeme's brothers and she is being held against her will. The two argue and fight and have all types of their passion raised in the process. While both have personal reasons for not giving in completely to their passionate attraction, the real issue keeping them apart is external rather than their own demons. When they both acknowledge their feelings for one another, I really felt the walls coming down between them. The scenes and language was so romantic and sweet that I could read them again and again.

The resolution satisfied, the characters are truly partners, and there are all kinds of possibilities for future books.

WORTH MENTIONING: Marjorie's brother makes a significant appearance for those who have read the first book.

CONNECTED BOOKS: MY ONE TRUE HIGHLANDER is the second book in the No Ordinary Hero series. This book can be read as a standalone, but is much better with the background from the first book in the series.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

NOTE: I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in order to provide a review. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions contained herein are my own.

I have always loved Suzanne's books and this one is going on my keeper shelf along with all her other books.

This is the second book in The No Ordinary Hero Series.

Graeme, Viscount Maxton is a genuine rugged handsome highlander. He takes care of everyone who looks to him for protection. He is raising his three younger brothers as best that he can. Teaching them what they need to know so that they can survive in the Highlands where loyalty is essential and treachery is always close by. Graeme is Laird of his estate The Lion's Den which is part of Clan Maxwell. Graeme has money problems, tenant problems and worst of all he does not get along with the leader of Clan Maxwell.

Lady Marjorie Forrester is the sister of the Duke of Lattimer (the hero in the first book in the series) and has decided to go to Scotland to surprise her brother and attend his wedding. While stopping at an Inn in the Highlands she is kidnapped and brought to the stronghold of the Laird of The Lion's Den by Graeme's younger brothers, thinking that Graeme can give Lady Marjorie to The Duke of Maxwell, his overlord, to use against his enemy the Duke of Lattimer. What a mess!! Now Graeme has to figure out a way to protect his brothers and decide what to do with Lady Marjorie.

Marjorie and Graeme start out as enemies but gradually become friends and so much more. Their journey of discovery is full of obstacles that they will have to overcome to have their HAE. Suzanne's writing is witty, heartfelt and she takes you on an adventure that includes mischievous young boys, lots of stray animals, and great secondary characters that I hope will have their own stories.

I recommend this book and this series. This is a wonderful read that will leave you waiting impatiently for the next book in the series.

My One Tue Highlander is the second book in the No Ordinary Hero Series by Suzanne Enoch. The story introduces Lady Marjorie Forrester who is the sister of the Duke of Lattimer (the Hero in the first book in the series). These siblings were not of the aristocracy but inheritance enabled them to gain unexpected titles that changed their lives.

Graeme Maxton who is a viscount raising mischievous brothers who wind up kidnapping Lady Marjorie and create problems for Maxton and Lattimer. Held captive in a dilapidated castle she become attracted to Graeme as he to her. They start off enemies and soon lovers. The both have baggage from their past that shapes their personalities. They are a nice couple and as the books progresses you can see the care and love that grows between them.

I liked this one a bit better than the first. Enoch wrote an absolutely wonderful story and it was a very good listen for me. Again, narrated by Flora McDonald who I think did a very good job with her narration of the characters.

Witty, hilarious and understated. A love story with a difference!

The major part of this novel takes place in the raw Scottish Highlands of 1812. Graeme, Viscount Maxton, is struggling to keep his crofters and land together. His young brothers decide to take things in hand, by kidnapping the sister of their new neighbour, the Duke of Lattimer, and coincidentally, the deadly enemy of their clan chief, the Duke of Dunncraigh. A clan chief Graeme constantly bumps up against, a man he doesn't like or trust. A bully of a man who doesn't care for his clan as is his responsibility.
Meanwhile in London, Lady Marjorie Forrester's attempts to take her place in society are not going so well. In fact she's failing dismally. So why not hive off from her house in Mayfair and surprise her brother at his coming wedding in the Highlands?
At first I thought, 'Where is this plot going?' By the end I was smiling at the daft situations that arose with those three brothers and laughing at the repartee between Graeme and Ree.
A heart warming story, with the added spice of dangerous foes, improbable secondary characters, the two leading characters with a decided sense of the ridiculous strongly attracted to each other, and three young men who just need to be handled in the right way.
A really enjoyable read!

This is such a fun and entertaining story, the chemistry between our two leads is electric whether that is when they are bickering or when they let themselves succumb to temptation. For a good portion of the book they are bickering or snipping at each other but it is so funny, especially when Graeme shackles Marjorie to the bed because of a jam episode – you have to read it.

This is my first dip into Suzanne Enoch’s work, I have read so many good things about her books that I knew that I had read her work and I am so pleased that I have. This is a brilliant read. It is atmospheric, filled with drama and angst. The plot is engrossing and enjoyable, but it is the characters that really set’s this apart from other work. It is a tantalizing and thrilling Highland Romance, if you’re a lover of all Rugged Highlanders then you will adore Graeme. Thoroughly enjoyable and very much recommended.

When a cloth went over her mouth she wasn't surprised, but she was furious. A woman should never be kidnapped once -- much less twice.

While I had not come across Enoch's books in my fairly recent but ever-growing love for historical romances, when I saw that this particular plot featured a strapping highlander and a kidnapped englishwomen, I couldn't resist dipping my toe into MY ONE TRUE HIGHLANDER.

And one toe eventually became my whole foot, leg.. well, you get the idea. I fell right into this story.

Enoch's writing is wonderful. Beautiful, clever; the woman turns a good phrase. While the story itself, which picks up after book one -- which I've yet to read -- might not be anything new, it was highly enjoyable. The characters, specifically Graeme's younger brothers, were so so wonderful. I fell in love with them from their first introduction; from Brendan's surly teenager attitude, to Dughlas' wry peacekeeping, to Connell's utter sweetness in rescuing and bringing home every stray animal he can find.

"Stop teasing Connell. He likes the Sassenach, and ye ken the duckling has a soft heart."
"I dunnae have a soft heart, I have a big heart!"

But for all the plot might feel familiar, the characters had some unique and added dimension to them, specifically our heroine and some of the secondary personalities. Marjorie's life was far from straight forward, having not been far along in life before losing her parents, forcing her older brother to enlist in order to help provide her an education, only to suddenly -- years later -- both inherit from a distant relative they hadn't even known.. and become a Duke and a duke's sister. But wealth and respect does not necessarily garner friendships and acceptance into society.

As a girl she'd dreamed of being a great lady, of men who tipped their hats and bowed at the very sight of her. Abruptly she was that lady, only to discover now that the deference of others could evidently be purchased.

[..]

Not for the first time, she wondered if fitting in with the aristocracy was worth the effort.

Graeme, conversely, knows his place in life. He is older brother, and parent, to his much younger siblings after the death of his own parents.. one loss being rather shocking and heartbreaking. He is a chieftain, responsible for his household, the cotters, the land. And has vowed to not love after the devastation left in the wake of his parents. So when the sister to the Duke who has since taken over the neighbouring Scottish lands falls in his lap, providing him the opportunity to pay dues owed to the Maxwell Laird, he is tempted. But by more than what she can buy him back. Between the attraction, the risk, being unwilling to bend to knee to the Laird, and wanting to discover why Marjorie is unlike any Sassenach he thought she'd be, well.. he decides to keep her around a little longer for himself.

"Ye should only marry her if ye're in love with her," Connell said, with all the conviction his eight years gave him. "And ye've only known her a day. What if she doesnae like cats?"

While I enjoyed their banter and the early attraction between these two, I found the intimate scenes -- even just kissing, not necessarily the sexier times -- to be.. strangely done. Not to mention Marjorie handed over her virtue in a strangely ambivalent fashion for a well-bred lady of the times. I don't know if they'll be smoothed by the time of publishing or not but they didn't flow very well and some of the more emotional moments fell a little flat to me for the same reason; there didn't seem to be very much, or at least not consistent, resonance in the romance. The chemistry was there but I only truly felt it in the lead-up to their getting together.

The highlights of this story, for me, were definitely the Maxton boys and Mrs. Giswell, Marjorie's companion, who even had her own little highlander experience. A bonus I totally adored.

I definitely intend to read more by this author, book one in this series at the very least, but while this didn't wow me completely, it was very fun and sweet and satisfying.

* I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher*

I loved this book - I think even more than I loved the first book!

Graeme is a chieftain of the Maxwell clan and his property borders Lattimer's (Hero in the Highlands). Graeme is not happy with his overlord, but needs the protection of the Duke for his small holding. When Graeme's younger brothers kidnap Lattimer's sister Marjorie - he is torn. He can't afford to let her go to her brother but neither can he turn her over to the Duke. There is also the small matter of what will happen if the Duke finds out who she is and that Graeme didn't turn her over to him. What's a Laird to do? Why marry the lass! Easier said than done!!

Marjorie aka Ree is Lattimer's younger sister. After Lattimer inherited the dukedom and gave her the London townhouse, she has been desperately trying to fit in with the ton and failing. When her brother writes that he is going to marry, Ree impulsively decides to attend his wedding. She sets off for Scotland with her very proper companion and is promptly kidnapped by highland barbarians!

When Graeme says that he will marry her - Ree is horrified and refuses.

Both Graeme and Ree have preconceived notions about the other and slowly begin to realize that those notions are wrong. And they begin to fall in love.

I highly recommend this book, the story is well written, flows nicely, has wonderful secondary characters, some laugh out loud moments, some steamy moments, some nail biting moments and finally a fantastic HEA.

This is the second book in the series, but it could easily be read as a stand alone title.
