The book is a cool journey back to the 70s pop culture that impact the most on the author, Dr. Todd Boyd. The study starts with blaxploitation movies, continues with black music of the 70s like Marvin Gaye, Isaac Hays, Aretha Franklin or George Clinton. The heterogenity of genres is not an obstacle in the main theme of the book, the strong influence of black creative artists in making the shape of the actual America.

Notorious PhD, nickname of the author, has don a great job making connections with the 70s and most recent artists. There are a lot of references of hip hop artists who have deep roots and make tribute to the 70s like Dr. Dre, Public Enemy, P. Diddy, Biggie, Mary J. Blige and so forth.

Finally, the work finishes with tv series and black athletes that had a great impact in the popular mainstream culture such as, Dr. J, Muhammad Ali or Bruce Lee (yes, in the particular and originsl point of view of Dr. Boyd, he was a bro as well).

Is a well written book, with a particular language that brings you back to the hood in the 70s, plenty of references (maybe Tarantino is the most cited in the book, after Richard Roundtree) and good taste of what was the crazy decade of 70s in USA from the eyes of a young, smart guy from Detroit.
