This is the third installment of Sasha Lord's "Wild" series. I've read the two previous books. The first one, Under a Wild Sky, started out really great but went downhill somewhere in the middle. I gave it three stars. The second book, In a Wild Wood, was great. It deserved four stars. Now, the third installment, "Across a Wild Sea", just sucked. I didn't like it one bit. The thought of abandoning reading it altogether entered my mind pretty early. Around page 40. But I wanted to give it a chance so I fought on – to no avail. I made it until page 164 where I finally gave up and skimmed the rest.

Our hero is Xanthier O'Bannon. He is the villain of the last book and therefore not a nice man. He now is commodore of a fleet, marauding and obtaining treasures for the king. One night in a violent storm, his ship sinks and Xanthier, injured and exhausted, barely manages to reach dry land of a nearby island.

On this island our heroine Alannah has lived almost all her life together with an old woman she calls grandmother. Alannah is a blind girl but she has a mysterious ability to sense her surroundings. One morning she takes a walk on the beach when she hears someone groaning. She goes to investigate and finds a person lying unconscious on the beach. Since she's blind she feels the body of that person –a male one – with her hands. Everywhere. When she touches a certain part of his body he comes awake and throws himself on top of her. Truly nothing can tame Xanthier's sex drive, no exhaustion, no pain, no shock, no disorientation.

Both feel instantly drawn to each other. They have sex pretty early in the book. It takes Xanthier weeks to realize that she's blind. I mean seriously, Xanthier? She's always with her cane and never looks you directly in the eye. Well, that last bit he misinterprets as her being repulsed by his horrible facial scars.

The first part of the book deals with Xanthier and Alannah living on her island. Grandmother died a few weeks after Xanthier's arrival and now it's just him and her and a herd of wild horses. During those months they fall in love with each other and have a lot of sex. I had some problems understanding all of that. I mean I couldn't see what they found in each other. Why and when did they fall in love? I needed some scenes where they really got to know each other. More scenes that displayed the character developement more comprehensible. I felt no connection between Xanthier and Alannah, no closeness. As I said, they almost immediately started having sex. It was all pretty unbelievable to me.

The second part is about Xanthier kidnapping Alannah from her island to bring her (and her wild stallion) to Scotland. That was the part where I stopped reading. It was all just too ridiculous. The trashyness wasn't even funny, or else I would have had at least some fun. The dialogues were so cheesy and bad. No one talks like that. There were no real conversations just a lot of misunderstandings, quarrels, and then sex.

The last part is about a horse race. This was even more ridiculous. First I just can't believe that a wild, untamed horse that, just a few weeks earlier, used to live on an island with no human contact aside from Alannah, her grandmother and Xanthier will be able to participate in such an event. It will balk and bolt. Second, I can't believe that our blind girl Alannah herself could ride in the race. Even when she rode the race course four times to get to know it, it wouldn't change one bit.

It was just too much for me. The writing style itself is also too overblown, too turgid. I think I don't want to read the remaining three parts of this series any longer.

Shipwrecked in a bad storm, the hero finds himself stranded on an island populated with only horses and the heroine and her grandmother. The heroine is blind and has developed a magical talent that allows her to feel the life force of creatures around her. She's independent, self sufficient but naïve. Also, she's only sixteen years old. I know that this fact will put some people off but keep in mind it's an historical romance. Also this is not a young adult novel either.

When her grandmother dies, the hero is forced to kidnap her in a bid to keep her safe while he tries to gain the island legally from the King. I think he did have the best intentions when he did this but it really did screw everything up. He's a man of his times, so he can't comprehend that a woman is able to survive without a male's protection. But the heroine has been raised on an island with only her elderly grandmother so she's perfectly able to protect herself. In kidnapping her, the hero loses her love and it takes sometime for hero to forgive him. On top of that, the KING (who truly is a royal asshole) denies his plea for the island and instead offers it up as a prize in a horse race. The hero went from being a sort of nice guy, albeit selfish and close minded, to being hated by the woman he loves.

It was a lovely book with very in depth characters who you both love and dislike equally throughout the book. You will hate the hero when he takes the heroine from her home against her will, but you'll love him in his attempt to win her back. Just enough to make it a paranormal-ish book but defiantly more historical romance than anything.

This book sucked. The characters were horrible and the writing was ridiculous. The way the characters spoke just sounded so cheesy. Definitely don't recommend.

Found this book!
It was being tossed out?
So of course, I grabbed it (saved it, imagine,
throwing out a book? That is pure evilness at it's evilest.)& I read it ;)
Now I wish I started from the beginning of the series!
Was a fun, quick read.
Can stand by it's self
but will leave you wanting more,
so might as well start at the beginning of the series!

Seems most her books are out of print
but I do see some up on ebay.
...I try very hard not to purchase books anymore but am very tempted ...
might just read the rest of the series after this one?
Would that be wrong???

Great book for sleepless night/s!
Complex characters, good story line, wild horses,
& leads your imagination on some wild adventures :)

This book is a feminist nightmare, and any woman who actually finds the male lead appealing has some deep-rooted internalized misogyny they need to address. None of his actions are excusable, and the constant hateful control he feels actually made me angry enough to put this book down. Ladies, even if a man thinks what he is doing is for the best, kidnapping, attempted rape, lying, and manipulation is not okay. And this is especially worrisome if a teen had seen this and thought a strange older man doing this equaled love-- because let's remember that this story involves a sheltered sixteen year old being left to deal with a violent man double her age in a secluded place. I would not recommend this book to anyone except as a tool to recognize the warning signs of an abusive relationship.

When I started off reading this book I did enjoy it but after a while the way the heroine was always getting mad and driving off the hero of the book just got too much. There was also almost too much of romantic scenes that you would have believed this was a creative book of bunny rabbits.

I wouldn't mind reading the rest of the series to see how the other books are since you cannot judge a series based on just one or two books. I am interested in seeing if all of the books eventually line up with each other or if they are just separate books based in the same timeframe.

All in all it was an ok plot with some interesting characters, an easily guessable plotline and a few twists.

Book three of the wild series. The usual sensuality and misunderstandings. That seeing without sight for that extra something. Horses for the animal lover. Nice series that I plan to donate when I finish rereading.
