My 7 year old picked this up and started reading it at the library. I grabbed it and handed it off to the two 12 year olds and one 11 year old for review.
They came back perplexed - the book is written and illustrated in a way my 7 year old could easily read and be drawn to, but the 12 year olds assured me the story line was much more appropriate for their age and should not be read by the 7 year old. The 11 year old said it was gross and he really hated it. Since it took them all of 5 minutes to read, I asked if they would like the other 3 books; all declined. It wasn't good enough to hold their interest even for the 5 minute read.
I decided at this point to read it myself - and agreed. I won't let the 7 year old read it and the 12 year olds can read better books. I'm giving it an extra star because the illustrations were quite well done. If it had been a longer book, maybe a graphic novel, the preteen boys might have liked it, but, as written it was a dud.
I would hope that boy reluctant readers would enjoy this series. The series does need to be read in order. I haven't read the end yet, but the story line is a bit weird.
