I graduated from UC Davis in 2014, and I was born and raised in Humboldt County, CA. I am currently engaged to my wonderful fiancee, Emily, and together we have a dog, Blue, and a cat, Peter Pants.

Allie heads off to her freshman year of college just a few weeks after her mother dies. Raised in a military family, Allie is used to change, but her mother has always been her anchor. She is invited to audition for and then wins a spot on an exclusive girls’ singing group. She makes some friends and goes to classes, but through all of it runs the unavoidable fact that her mother has died and if she doesn’t deal with her grief, then she will instead make terrible choices – life-altering choices.
I am mystified as to the audience for this book. It is formatted as a hi/lo reader, but it is way too mature for the regular hi/lo audience. This could have so easily had the main character be a junior or a senior and made a couple of other minor changes and brought this firmly into the realm of the target audience. I sure can’t see a college freshman reading this! And as an introduction to college life, it is only mediocre.
