Giraffes by Grace Hansen is a basic non-fiction that explains details and interesting facts about giraffes. It has many text features such as a table of contents, heading, bold words, glossary, index and real pictures. It follows a basic descriptive text structure. I would pair this book with The Starry Giraffe by Andy Bergmann, which is a story about a hungry giraffe that helps to feed his friends. I would use webbing for both texts to focus on the comprehension skill of finding the main idea and details. We would first read Giraffes to learn more about them. We will create a web containing details about the giraffe. Before introducing The Starry Giraffe, we would review what we already know about giraffes and what they eat. We could then create a web based on our fictional giraffe story as well.

This book, illustrated with full color photographs, gives a basic introduction to giraffes. It describes where their physical characteristics and what they eat.
Additional facts, a glossary, and an index are included at the back of the book.
