My Calling

Rate this book
Fresh out of paramedic school, Saylor Warner can’t wait to start saving lives. At sixteen, she watched the man who raised her be gunned down while she stood by, unable to do anything except shed tears and watch her uncle die. It’s taken her six years to be able to fulfill her calling of helping others but the day has finally arrived and she’s anxious to get started.

Jonathan “Beck” Beckerdyte isn’t exactly what you’d call a people person. He’s spent the last six years trying to stay out of the public eye but now, his calling has led him into the field of civil service. Less than excited about his new job riding in a rig all day and attending to medical emergencies, Beck deals with it because he’s made it his mission to watch over Saylor Warner… except Saylor doesn’t know that.

My Calling…It’s unexpected, It’s heartache, It’s loss, It’s regrets, It’s uncertainty, It’s loneliness, It’s perseverance, It’s survival…yet, love can prevail and humor can heal.

Meet, Jonathan “Beck” Beckerdyte, who comes across as the human equivalent of Grumpy Cat, but in all actuality, his character is intriguing, perplexing, with an air of mystery. He doesn’t smile much, he doesn’t LOL, but he is as deep as the ocean. He is the true representation of the word protector, and will go to any length to do just that for Saylor Warner, all while being incognito. While that may sound pathological, I assure you, he has valid reasons, and you will, in turn, respect him for it. Plus, he has a beard, tats, and is uber hot!

Meet, Saylor Warner, who is compassionate, spirited, bubbly. She exudes light and warmth and wears her heart on her sleeve. She’s been dealt a bad hand in life, but she doesn’t treat it like a life sentence. Instead, she picks up the shattered pieces, all the while fulfilling her life/career goal to help people.

In, My Calling, Lyssa Layne has the gift of taking its serious subject matter and balancing it with just the right dose of humor. One second you’re tearing up, the next you’re smiling like a loon, all the while, turning into some sort of Private Eye…

… Which is a great segue for me to talk about the EPILOGUE! Holy crap on a cracker, the author didn’t just think outside the box, but blew it to smithereens. Pay no heed to how you reckon this story ends because that will go out the proverbial window. After I wrapped, what I now know, to be my simpleton brain around the conclusion, I wanted to high five and low five the author for achieving epi-uniqueness!

WARNING:
My Calling by Lyssa Layne, will make you swoon, pause to ponder, clutch your heart, smile uncontrollably, chuckle freely, and wish you had her number on speed dial.

Saylor and Beck's story is yet another couple you will fall for from Lyssa Layne. Ms. Layne writes stories that are real and gives you all sorts of feels. But be prepared My Calling is not like any other I have read. This one left me in tears. It's heartbreaking and the HEA in this one is not one I saw coming at all.

Saylor is surviving each day without the uncle raised her and died in her arms six years ago. Because she feels she couldn't do anything to keep him alive, she decides her calling is to become a paramedic so that she can save others. Beck is fulfilling Saylor's uncle's dying wish. Beck will do anything to keep her safe even if the people he's trying to protect her from are really after him. The kicker is Saylor has no idea she is being protected and taken care by her new friend and co-worker Beck.

Can Beck resist Saylor now that she knows him without revealing who he really is and the connection of her uncle?

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

It was good, until the last chapter and BOOM!! Entire book RUINED!

Personally, if I had known, I wouldn't have wasted my time reading it.

Saylor Warner watched her uncle die in front of her 6 years ago and now she is ready to become a paramedic and save lives. She has put her past behind her and is ready to move on and do some good.

Jonathan "Beck" Beckerdyte has been secretly watching over Saylor for the past 6 years making sure she is safe and has now become a paramedic just to keep a closer eye on her. He made a promise to keep her safe and that's what he is doing, no matter what the risk is to himself.

But the past has a way of catching up with you and when Saylor discovers who Beck is will she still trust him or will she leave again. When the danger is still there will they have a chance at escaping again?

This book was awesome and I was in for a total shocker!

I loved how Saylor wanted something good to come from the past and learn how to save lives so she wouldn't lose anyone else. Beck would go to the ends of the earth for Saylor and his love for her was so genuine but I loved how he was torn due to her Uncle Eddie.

This book had my emotions on such various levels and I wanted to scream and yell during parts and others I wanted to cry.

Great book!

I fell in love with a Beck and Saylor straight away, their story is tragically romantic and the twist at the end, wow. That twist took the book from a great book to a freaking amazing book.
Lyssa even managed to make me cry, which isn't an easy feat but I think that's the third time she has now made me cry
